Roughly a year since introducing Blocks — a simplified sharing platform for 3D media and content across devices — Looking Glass has facilitated more than 6,000 holograms uploaded from its growing user base. Now, the company is ready to bring Blocks out of beta and introduce it to the wider world with its own image to hologram conversion service, making it even easier for users to create and share.
“Looking back on the early days of the internet, where static 2D images dominated our screens, to dynamic GIFs that added a touch of life, and now to Blocks making holograms commonplace, it’s clear that we’re on the cusp of a 3D revolution — developments in AI, ML and NeRFs notwithstanding,” Nikki Chan, VP Customer Experience for Looking Glass, writes in the official blog announcement.
“The progression from 2D to 3D content isn’t merely a technological step forward; it’s a transformation in how we perceive and interact with digital content. Just as we all now naturally expect videos to playback with a single click (eight-year-old me would be shocked), we’re venturing into a decade where 3D will be the expected default dimension.”
Built from scratch on Blocks, the new image to hologram converter allows users to seamlessly upload and share holograms generated from any single 2D image — from original artwork or generative AI images to personal snapshots. The 3D conversions can be viewed on the physical Looking Glass display (headset free) or in your web browser. New and existing users can convert 20 images for free every month, starting today.
Canadian kids’ & family entertainment co. WildBrain has partnered with Tencent Video and animation studio Miaow’s House as the exclusive worldwide distributor outside of mainland China of the new animated series, Pet Hotel (26 x 11’, kids 7–9).
“With ‘companionship’ as its core theme, Pet Hotel features characters Nai Nai, Vicky, Lili and Bubu, who are all based on real stray animals that I rescued in my daily life. Living together with these adorable animals inspired me to create this animated series,” explained Robin Guo, series director and chairman of the board of Miaow’s House. “I aim to create a comedy that revolves around the unexpected intelligence of pets, showcasing their cuteness through exaggerated physical performances and concise dialogue, as well as the harmonious coexistence with humans. Kindness, tolerance, sharing and giving ultimately triumph over all difficulties. The concept of ‘love’ permeates every episode of Pet Hotel, making it a family-friendly and innovative animated sitcom series.”
The series follows the comedic antics of Lili the dog, Bubu the guinea pig and cats Nai Nai and Vicky as they welcome new animal friends to their home at the Pet Hotel.
Unlike other hotels, the Pet Hotel — which has been converted from an old grocery store — is filled with high-tech inventions created by the pets’ caregiver and hotel owner, Robin; from massage tables to automatic feeders! The animal buddies and their young owner face various quirky customers and their wacky pets every day, giving rise to numerous entertaining stories. It’s no question that every guest at the Pet Hotel will leave happy, having made a new set of friends.
Leveraging the unique characteristics of different animals, Pet Hotel creates entertainment and humor while also promoting scientific knowledge about animals and pet care.
“This exciting partnership with Tencent Video and Miaow’s House represents the continued expansion of our business in China and underscores WildBrain’s international reach as we introduce audiences around the world to Pet Hotel,” said Caroline Tyre, VP Global Sales and Rights Strategy at WildBrain. “These laugh-out-loud tales of the Pet Hotel crew have universal appeal and are sure to delight kids and families through their compelling storylines and endearing characters.”
Selina She, Director of Kids’ IP Development and Programming at Tencent Video, commented, “We are delighted to be teaming up with WildBrain to bring this beloved show to a broader international audience. Online cannabis marketplace Weedmaps has partnered with notorious comix stoners The Freak Brothers to further destigmatize and celebrate weed culture through the animated series’ second half launch of Season 2, which streams Sunday, September 24 on Tubi.
The collab will consist of in-episode Weedmaps integrations in the new episodes, as well as exclusive “Smoke & Screen” events throughout the U.S., which will bring together industry influencers and tastemakers at the intersection of cannabis and entertainment.
“We know comedy has the power to influence culture, and we are excited to partner with The Freak Brothers to amplify our message that weed is something to be celebrated,” said Randa McMinn, Chief Marketing Officer at Weedmaps. “Since our company’s founding, Weedmaps has been committed to elevating stoner culture everywhere, challenging outdated stereotypes and bringing the plant to the forefront of mainstream conversations. Now, 15 years later, to see the Freak Brothers’ characters themselves embrace Weedmaps as their ‘go to’ for weed in the series is indicative of society’s broader acceptance of the plant and the industry at large.”
“Embracing the essence of stoner culture before it was mainstream, Freak Brothers and Weedmaps are united in blazing the trail toward a more inclusive and enlightened cannabis landscape” said Greg Goldner, Chief Brand & Strategy Officer of The Freak Brothers. “We’re excited about this partnership as it’s a convergence of the psychedelic past and the digital present, and I have no doubt that if Weedmaps was around in the 1960s, The Freak Brothers would have been their most valuable customers.”
Based on Gilbert Shelton’s cult classic underground comic series The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, The Freak Brothers animated series returns with Season 2 featuring the show’s all-star voice cast — Woody Harrelson, John Goodman, Pete Davidson, Tiffany Haddish, Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, Andrea Savage, La La Anthony and ScHoolboy Q. Additionally, Joe Sikora joins this season with a special guest appearance. The series is produced by WTG Enterprises.
The Freak Brothers chronicles the escapades of a trio of stoner anti-establishment characters and their cat who wake up from a 50-year nap after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969 and must adjust to life with a new family in present-day San Francisco. In the second season, the Freaks’ Mary Jane-fueled misadventures will take them from their high school reunion to matching wits with Mark Zuckerberg, settling old scores with Mitch McConnell and battling Seth Rogen in a Pot Brownie Bake-Off contest.

The Academy has announced the finalist films in the 50th Student Academy Awards competition, naming eight films in the unified international Animation category.
This year’s race is packed with French student films from some of the nation’s most respected animation programs, accounting for half of the finalists. The United States is represented by two films from stalwarts CalArts and SCAD, with the remaining spots filled by Israel’s Bezalel Academy and U.K.’s NFTS.
French students captured a majority of the nominations in last year’s SAAs (three out of seven), capturing the Bronze Medal with The Seine’s Tears. In the prior year, when the Academy still separated the categories into International and Domestic Film Schools, all three International nominees were French — Louis’ Shoes won the Gold for 2021.
Medalists in the Student Academy Awards are automatically qualified for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar category at the main Academy Awards. While an SAA winner has yet to take home the coveted statuette (John Minnis’ film Charade produced at Sheridan College was not in the Student race before winning the Academy Award in 1984), recent medalists turned Oscar nominees include An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It by Lachlan Pendragon (Griffith Film School, Australia) this year, Daughter by Daria Kashcheeva (FAMU, Czechia) in 2019 and 9 by Shane Acker back in 2005.
You can find the full list of Student Academy Awards for 2023 here. The semi-finalist list is also online here.

The official trailer and Japanese voice cast roster have been revealed The Imaginary, the second full feature film from eight-year-old Studio Ponoc. Like its first movie, Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017), this fantasy adventure is inspired by a British children’s book — in this case, A. F. Harrold’s 2014 novel of the same name. The Imaginary is scheduled for release in Japan on December 15, followed by a global rollout in 2024.
Synopsis: His name is Rudger. A boy no one can see. An Imaginary, imagined by Amanda, who has lost love. But Imaginaries disappear when they are forgotten by humans. Lost without hope, Rudger arrives at The Town of Imaginaries, where Imaginaries once forgotten by humans live together…
In the announcement, the studio stated, “We are very happy to share this peek at our new animated feature film with you, a hint at the marvelous story told through Studio Ponoc’s splendidly beautiful hand-drawn animation and hand-painted backgrounds and some new innovative techniques that both honor our heritage and help us create even more exquisite storytelling.”
The Japanese voice cast includes Kokoro Terada as Rudger; Rio Suzuki as Amanda; Sakura Ando as Amanda’s mother, Lizzie; Riisa Naka as Emily, a girl Rudger meets in The Town of Imagineries; Takayuki Yamada as Zinzan, a mysterious cat; Atsuko Takahata as Amanda’s grandmother, Granny Downbeat; and Issey Ogata as Mr. Bunting, a mysterious man who follows Rudger. Additional cast to be announced.
The Imaginary is being directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, who joined Studio Ghibli as a key animator on Grave of the Fireflies (1988) and worked his way up to lead storyboard for Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994) and the CG portions of Princess Mononoke (1997); leading key animator on Spirited Away (2001) and sequence director for My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999). After making his theatrical directorial debut with the Ghiblies:Episode 2 (2002), Momose was in charge of scene design for Isao Takahata’s final masterpiece, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013).
At Studio Ponoc, Momose directed Life Ain’t Gonna Lose, one of the shorts in Modest Heroes – Ponoc Short Films Theatre, Volume 1 (2018). His latest work as director is Tomorrow’s Leaves (2021), an animated short film created in collaboration with the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage.
Founded in 2015 by Studio Ghibli alum Yoshiaki Nishimura (lead producer on Howl’s Moving Castle, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and When Marnie Was There), Studio Ponoc introduced itself to the global cinema scene with warmly received Mary and the Witch’s Flower, based on Mary Stewart’s book The Little Broom Stick and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arietty, When Marnie WasThere). The film was nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animation Film and received two Annie Award nominations.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower was followed in 2018 by the three-part anthology Modest Heroes, which featured segments written and directed by Yonebayashi, Momose and longtime Ghibli character designer Akihiko Yamashita, who previously directed the Ghibli Museum Short A Sumo Wrestler’s Tale.

This Mexico tour comes during the 100th Anniversary celebration year of Warner Bros., which includes the enduring appeal and legacy of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes characters and animation.
Conducted by Emmy Award winner George Daugherty, and created by Daugherty and Emmy Award winner David Ka Lik Wong, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony has been touring the world with major symphony orchestras and at iconic venues since 1990, when the production first sold out Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre as Bugs Bunny on Broadway. Since then, the concert has played to sold-out houses and rave reviews around the globe, with hundreds of orchestras and venues ranging from The New York Philharmonic to The Boston Pops to The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Royal Philharmonic, from The Hollywood Bowl to the Sydney Opera House to Lincoln Center.
Previously in Mexico, the concert first played at Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional in 1998, which was followed in 2011 by two historic open-air performances in front of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, which attracted tens of thousands of audience members.
This latest version of Bugs Bunny at the Symphony pairs 16 iconic Looney Tunes shorts projected on the big screen, including What’s Opera, Doc? (Chuck Jones, 1957), The Rabbit of Seville (Jones, 1950), Baton Bunny(Jones and Abe Levitow, 1959),Long-Haired Hare (Jones, 1949) and the Merrie Melodies short A Corny Concerto (Bob Clampett, 1943), plus five contemporary shorts: 3D CG coyote & roadrunner toons from 2010, directed by Matthew O’Callaghan: Rabid Rider, Coyote Falls and Fur of Flying; and 2019 Looney Tunes Cartoons Dynamite Dance and Wet Cement.
“When we were all growing up and watching Looney Tunes on Saturday morning, we didn’t realize we were also getting a massive lesson in classical music,” says Daugherty. “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony is the perfect opportunity to bring today’s kids to the symphony orchestra and appreciate the beauty of classical music while getting a hilarious twist from Bugs Bunny and his cohorts. More importantly, it’s a chance for adults of all ages to rekindle their affection for these brilliant animated shorts, and relive a truly nostalgic and magical part of their childhoods.”

Daugherty has conducted more than 250 American and international orchestras, and also earned a Primetime Emmy Award, five other Emmy nominations and numerous other awards for his work in television and film. Daugherty and producing partner David Ka Lik Wong received Primetime Emmys as executive producers of ABC’s animation and live-action production of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, which Daugherty also directed, wrote and conducted, and for which he was also Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Music Direction. Daugherty and Wong were also executive producers and writers of the PBS/Sesame Workshop children’s series Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat, and both received Emmy nominations for Rhythm & Jam, their series of ABC network music education specials.
In 1990, Daugherty and Wong created Bugs Bunny on Broadway, which made its debut at Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre with a sold-out extended run, and along with its sequel Bugs Bunny at the Symphony has since played to critical acclaim and sold-out houses all over the world, to audiences of over 2 million people.
Wong is also a Prime Time Emmy Award winner, a three-time Emmy nominee, has created programming and concerts on Broadway and for the greatest symphony orchestras and concert halls in the world, and together with Daugherty has produced, written and created a slate of critically-acclaimed television programs and movies for Warner Bros., ABC/Disney, Sesame Workshop, PBS, and other major studios and networks. He has been the co-creator, producer, technical/stage director and lighting designer for the concert’s entire history.
Warner Bros. Discovery Presents Bugs Bunny at the Symphony is a 130-minute concert, with one 20-minute intermission.
