  • Yanmar Debuts Futurist Eco Anime ‘Miru’ at AX2023

Yanmar Debuts Futurist Eco Anime ‘Miru’ at AX2023

Yanmar, a global industrial equipment company founded in Osaka, is expanding into the animation biz, making its introductions at Anime Expo 2023 (AX2023) from July 1 to 4, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Yanmar will present 未ル(Miru), which the company describes as “an exciting tale where the main character embarks on an epic adventure in a world where robots coexist, while nature faces a looming threat.” The anime features a robot character based an original concept by Yanmar’s own designers.

At Yanmar’s booth, located in the entrance area oat AX2023, attendees will find a giant model of the heroic robot. The company will also host a panel discussion led by Chief Branding Officer Akihiro Nagaya, introduced by Miru co-producer btrax’s CEO Brandon K. Hill and a live drawing demonstration by director, art director and artist YKBX. The panel is scheduled for Monday, July 3 from 10-11:30 a.m. in LACC Room 511.

“With Miru, we aim to inspire viewers and illustrate the profound connection between humans, machines and nature,” said Nagaya. “Miru is a testament to Yanmar’s commitment to realizing prosperous and exciting lifestyles in harmony with nature.” Founded in 1912, the industrial machinery outfit is refocusing on leveraging technology to provide solutions to diverse areas such as food production, energy, urban development and entertainment.

Synopsis: A story of the main character’s efforts to change the future by joining forces with her friends as she grows up while interacting with robots.

Original concept design for the robot seen in ‘Miru’ (Yanmar Holdincs Design Office)

Miru explores the theme of “confrontation and harmony between humans and nature” in the context of a global movement towards a sustainable society. The title “未ル” combines the character for “future” (Mi) with the Japanese character “Ru” to indicate positive action and initiative in creating the future.

“Anime is a medium that allows us to combine immersive storytelling and world-building with the future as envisioned by Yanmar. The interactions between humans and machines, the coexistence of humans and nature, and the story of the protagonist challenging themselves and growing by believing in their own potential are all rooted in Yanmar’s values of HANASAKA and the underlying excitement (WAKUWAKU). The fictional world of anime and the real world in which we exist influence each other to create a unified worldview. Through anime, we aim to accomplish this ambitious endeavor.” notes Nagaya.

“We hope that the excitement (WAKUWAKU) generated by Yanmar will resonate with everyone who watches the anime, becoming a powerful catalyst for realizing a more prosperous society.”

    YKBX

Due to premiere in 2024, Miru is created and produced by Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd. in cooperation with btrax Japan LLC, directed by YKBX from a scenario written by Shigeru Morita of Studio Nue. Yanmar’s in-house Design Office was responsible for the original concept for the robot character’s look. Based on the belief that robots exist for the sake of humans, the design juxtaposes an appealing, humanizing organic form and a strong, functional component. Miru is a development of “YANMAR Project Socius,” announced last fall.

YKBX is a director and producer, as well as an art director, illustrator and artist. Among YKBX’s many acclaimed and award-winning works, they served as the visual director, director and video director for the Hatsune Miku Vocaloid opera THE END, which was performed to global audiences.

A concept teaser for Miru will be unveiled timed to AX2023. Learn more and follow the project’s progress at miru-anime.com.

Trailer: ‘Futurama’ Is Ready for Its Crash Landing Comeback on Hulu

Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s uncancellable animated comedy Futurama is preparing for landing on its new streaming home planet, Hulu. Starting July 24, fans can embark on brand-new, even more future-y adventures with Fry, Leela, Bender and the rest of the Planet Express crew as they encounter contemporary 31st century adventures — which, in the newly unveiled official trailer, include weathering a pandemic, confronting crypto outlaws and getting a little too comfortable with one’s virtual assistant.

Season 11 Synopsis: After a brief 10-year hiatus, Futurama has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact.

The 10 all-new episodes of Season 11 have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries — including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. Meanwhile there’s a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.

The original cast returns for S11: John DiMaggio as Bender; Billy West as Fry, Dr. Farnsworth, Zoidberg and others; Katey Sagal as Leela, Tress MacNeille as Mom and others; Maurice LaMarche as Kif Kroker and others; Lauren Tom as Amy; Phil LaMarr as Hermes and others; and David Herman as Scruffy and others.

Futurama premiered in 1999 and quickly gained a faithful following and critical acclaim, including two primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program. The series follows Philip J. Fry, a New York City pizza delivery boy, who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. In this astonishing New New York, he befriends hard-drinking robot Bender and falls in love with cyclops Leela. The trio find work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, founded by Fry’s doddering descendant, Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Together with accountant Hermes Conrad, assistant Amy Wong and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg, they embark on thrilling adventures that take them to every corner of the universe.

After its initial run on the Fox Broadcasting Network, a roller-coaster of cancellations and resurrections ensued. Four successful direct-to-DVD releases in 2007-2009 led to the show’s rebirth on Comedy Central from 2010-2013. Most recently, Futurama re-emerged with a 20-episode order from Hulu.

Lion Forge Teams with Black Women Animate to Recruit ‘Iyanu’ Pre-Prod Talent

Lion Forge Entertainment, the prodco behind the Academy Award-winning short Hair Love, is partnering with Taylor K. Shaw’s Black Women Animate Studios (BWA) to advance their shared mission of fostering diversity and representation in front of and behind the camera in the animation industry. BWA will work with Lion Forge’s Atlanta-based production studio to recruit a diverse pool of talent for pre-production roles on the Nigerian fantasy series Iyanu, based on the graphic novels by Roye Okupe. The show will air on Cartoon Network and Max.

The partnership is led by Lion Forge Entertainment’s Founder and CEO David Steward II, and aims to further expand access and opportunities for Black and POC animators to train the next generation of creators and producers.

“Lion Forge stands for diverse stories, authentically told,” said Steward. “BWA is one of the organizations leading the effort to open up this industry to new voices and new creators and we are thrilled to join forces with them to provide under-represented talent with the platform they deserve. Together, we will redefine the boundaries of storytelling and inspire a new generation of diverse voices in animation.”

We are coming together to hire and train diverse talent for their upcoming series and will continue our efforts through an ongoing equity strategy that will be announced later this year,” said Shaw, Founder & CEO of Black Women Animate.

With a background in original IP development, BWA Studios offers design and animation solutions as well as advisory services for commercial and long-form entertainment. The studio’s production and programming resume spans all platforms, driving equity in the animation industry by intentionally hiring Black women, women of color and nonbinary people of color.

Set against the rich tapestry of Yoruba people of Nigeria’s history and achievements, Iyanu is an adaptation of Dark Horse Comics/YouNeek Studios’ popular graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder. • Dandelooo’s ‘Gaston Gets It!’ Gallops into Development with Canal+

Dandelooo’s ‘Gaston Gets It!’ Gallops into Development with Canal+

Emmy Award-winning French animation production and distribution company Dandelooo has teamed up with Canal+ to develop its latest animation project, Gaston Gets It!, a 52 x 11-minute comedy series for upper preschoolers.

Gaston is a young unicorn just like many others … well, almost. Gaston is unique. He has a rainbow-colored mane which is magical. His striking mane changes colors according to his emotions, oops!

The new 2D show is based on the hit children’s book series Gaston’s Emotions (Les émotions de Gaston), written by author and illustrator Aurélie Chien Chow Chine and published by Hachette Enfants, an imprint of Hachette Livre France. The books, which encourage children to identify emotions and manage them effectively, have sold over 1.3 million copies in France alone and have been translated into 27 languages.

Dandelooo will present Gaston Gets It! to potential industry partners at this year’s Cartoon Forum in Toulouse, together with a teaser directed by Aurélie Raphaël (co-director of Ernest and Celestine, The Collection), and will be responsible for the worldwide distribution rights.

“Canal+ thinks big for little ones. We have big ambitions for the content we provide for kids,” notes Christine Cauquelin, Director of Programs and Youth, Documentaries and Animation Units and Channels at Canal+. “Our approach is largely illustrated by what we call ‘Original Recreation’; which is our selection of the best kids’ TV animation content. It brings together what we consider to be the most creative and entertaining content that sparks children’s imaginations.

“Because it’s important for our audience to be in touch with their emotions, we’ve chosen to follow the adaptation of Aurélie Chien Chow Chine’s best-selling albums, Gaston’s Emotions! Gaston the unicorn seemed to us to be the most sympathetic of ambassadors, a passionate and exalted character who lives his emotions to the full!”

Based in Paris, Dandelooo has its own studio, Ooolala, in la Cartoucherie (Valence, France) and sales offices in Barcelona and Milan. Its upcoming slate also includes the Jean Claude Mourlevat adaptation The Upside Down River (8 x 22′) and preschool series Billy the Cowboy Hamster (52 x 11′), set for delivery in Q1 2024. Notable productions include the hybrid preschool series The Treehouse Stories, which won an International Emmy Kids Award in 2017; Stinky Dog (52 x 11′); Mum Is Pouring Rain, winner of a Jury Award for a TV Special at Annecy 2021; Chico Chica Boumba; and the animated feature film Houdini. Introduced at Cartoon Forum 2022, A Day with the Dogs is now in development and financing stage. Dandelooo is also developing loguis, an original project to initiate yoga for preschoolers.

  • DADA! Brings the Great European Migration to Screens in SEPPIA’s ‘There Were Millions of Them’

DADA! Brings the Great European Migration to Screens in SEPPIA’s ‘There Were Millions of Them’

SEPPIA has appointed DADA! Animation to produce animated sequences for the hybrid documentary series There Were Millions of Them (lls étaient des Millions). The trailer, unfolding the world map of the greatest migration phenomenon in Western history, will be showcased at the Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle from June 19-22.

Co-produced with Arte France, Arte GEIE, Arte Germany/Saarländischer Rundfunk and Indi Film (Germany), the 3 x 52’ docuseries details the massive human migration which took place in waves throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. These accelerating waves of migration during the next hundred years saw 56 million Europeans pack their bags and seek a new life abroad. The series is directed by Patrick Cabouat,  written by Bruno Ulmer and Catherine Ulmer-Lopez.

There Were Millions of Them unfolds the world map of the greatest migration phenomenon in Western history in a large fresco, combining animation reconstructions, graphic novel style, and documentary. From the end of the Thirty Years’ War to the 1920s, millions of people left the lands of continental Europe — ravaged by wars, epidemics and climate disasters — to recount the dream of a better life that has built cities, states and cultures far away in Russia, the Americas and North Africa — histories that have forged industrialization, globalization and capitalism.

In partnership with the German studio SERU Animation, DADA! Animation developed various animated assets based on AI-generated style transfer to complete the conversion of artistic masterpieces and painted landscape scenery into animated sequences to illustrate the story of these families.

SEPPIA’s producer and co-owner, Cédric Bonin, says that visually and narratively depicting the profound migratory movement that spans two centuries and three continents in a documentary approach presented a huge challenge that the creative team was excited to tackle.

“How could we bring to life the stories of these migrants, whose journeys and experiences we have discovered? From the very beginning, our team of authors dismissed the idea of using fiction. It would have been too costly and logistically challenging, considering the vast number of territories and periods involved,” he says. “Instead, we turned to animation as a means to portray this expansive human tapestry and represent the historical figures, many of whom were humble individuals for whom visual documentation was often non-existent. We decided that an aesthetic inspired by graphic novels would allow us to give them faces and create a connection between the audience and these migrants from the past.”

DADA! Animation developed the artistic direction of There Were Millions of Them, helping SEPPIA get to grips with the animation production process, from writing and animatics to delivery. DADA! Animation co-founder, Jérôme Mouscadet, says that the company constantly strives to master real-time technologies and innovate within its digital lab, breaking down the barriers of animated images and collaborating with sectors and genres other than traditional youth programming.

On Wednesday, June 21, DADA! Animation co-founder and head of innovation Quentin Auger will participate in a Sunny Side of the Doc panel discussion where he will share his expertise on archival material and innovative uses in documentary filmmaking and how DADA! Animation developed the animated aesthetic for There Were Millions of Them that the producers believe will resonate with history enthusiasts, animation lovers and families alike.

There Were Millions of Them will be broadcast on Arte and made available on Arte’s free VOD platform in six languages all over Europe. The series will also benefit from a multi-broadcast on national and regional television and non-linear services across Germany. CLPB Rights will manage the international distribution.

  • 28 Classic Animated Shorts Roll Out on Disney+ for Centennial Celebration

28 Classic Animated Shorts Roll Out on Disney+ for Centennial Celebration

Disney+ will begin debuting a collection of 28 newly restored Walt Disney Animation Studios classic shorts starting on July 7, featuring toon favorites like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip n’ Dale and the studio’s first star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The streaming release of these vintage gems is part of the Disney 100th anniversary celebration all year long.

Ranging from undisputed classics to lesser known titles, this package of short films includes examples of Disney’s earliest theatrical shorts (Trolley Troubles and All Wet, both from 1927 and starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit), Silly Symphony classics like The Skeleton Dance, Merbabies and Wynken, Blynken and Nod, as well as a wide range of entertaining shorts featuring Disney’s most beloved characters. Chips Ahoy, a 1956 CinemaScope short starring Donald Duck and his chipmunk rivals, concludes the series in October, leading up to Disney’s 100th anniversary on October 16.

The restorations were spearheaded by Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, led by director Kevin Schaeffer, working in close collaboration with creative advisors from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The latter included Dorothy McKim, special projects and 2D animation producer, along with color supervision by Mike Giaimo (production designer on the two Frozen features and the upcoming feature, Wish) and animation legend Eric Goldberg (who headed animation on the Genie in Aladdin and directed Pocahontas and two segments for Fantasia/2000). This same team recently restored Cinderella, and are presently working on a restoration of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

“We are thrilled to be working with Kevin Schaeffer and the Studio’s restoration team in presenting these beautifully restored versions of classic Disney animated shorts,” said McKim. “Two of our top artistic talents have lent their expertise and passion to the project to make sure that the films look their very best, and are authentic to the creative intentions of the original filmmakers. We’re very excited to be sharing these wonderful shorts with the Disney+ audience. They have never looked or sounded better.”

    Premiering on July 7:

    • Aquamania (1961) — Avid water-skier Goofy sets out to teach his son the fine art of the sport, and accidentally winds up in a championship race. He encounters a hapless octopus and takes a detour on a roller coaster on his way to an unexpected victory.
    • Bath Day (1946) — Figaro the cat takes center stage, after he gets a bath (complete with ribbon and perfume) from Minnie Mouse, and then encounters a group of frisky alley cats. A frightened Figaro wins the day when his shaking topples a tower of trash cans onto his rival, and he emerges the victor in the scuffle. Minnie rewards him with another bath.
    • Building a Building (1933) — Mickey operates a steam shovel on a busy construction site, where Minnie sells box lunches, and a flirtatious Pete is the foreman. When Pete’s advances cross the line, Mickey comes to Minnie’s rescue leading to a chase through a steel skeleton of a building and a riveting conclusion.
    • Figaro and Frankie (1947) — Minnie’s cat, Figaro, is trying to take a cat nap, but the canary (Frankie) insists on singing.  A squabble ensues in which Frankie’s cage topples. Minnie thinks Figaro has eaten Frankie, but the bird has simply flown the coop. In the end, Figaro rescues Frankie from the neighbor’s dog, and domestic tranquility is restored.
    • Goofy Gymnastics (1949) — Goofy enlists the aid of an instructional record and gymnastics equipment in an effort to become fit, with the help of some barbells, chin-up bars and cable expanders. In the process, he wrecks his floors, gets flung around the room and falls out the window, before ending up approvingly behind the cut-out of the muscular man he aspired to be.
    • The Skeleton Dance (1929)  — A lively quartet of graveyard skeletons come out to play and dance the night away in this spooky Silly Symphony, set to the macabre music of Edvard Grieg (adapted by Carl Stalling). Ub Iwerks’ inventive animation uses plenty of graveyard gags involving animals and a skeletal xylophone.

    Premiering on August 11:

    • Barnyard Olympics (1932) — Mickey and Pete go head to head in a variety of sporting events (running, rowing, vaulting and a wild bicycle race finale), as the entire barnyard (including Minnie and Horace Horsecollar) turns out to cheer them on. Pete resorts to cheating but Mickey wins in the end.
    • Donald’s Cousin Gus (1939) — Donald Duck’s gluttonous cousin, Gus Goose, comes for a visit and practically eats him out of house and home. When the direct approach to getting rid of his voracious houseguest fails, Donald resorts to desperate measures to dislodge him.
    • Donald’s Nephews (1938) — Donald attempts to practice child psychology (with a book called Modern Child Training) on his three visiting nephews – Huey, Dewey and Louie – who love to create mischief and play tricks on their long suffering Uncle Donald. The book has little impact on the troublemaking trio, who wreak havoc on Donald and his house.
    • The Flying Jalopy (1943) — Donald Duck buys a rattletrap used airplane from devious proprietor Ben Buzzard, who tricks the unsuspecting duck into making Ben the beneficiary in case of an accident. Ben then leads Donald on a reckless flight, trying to make the plane crash so that he collect a fortune from Donald’s misfortune.
    • Goofy and Wilbur (1939) — Goofy launched a series of his own solo cartoons with this inventive short film which finds him working in concert with his pet grasshopper pal, Wilbur, to lure fish to his net. Not realizing the harm that Wilbur is in until it is too late, Goofy springs into action to try and rescue his friend from an uncertain fate with a hungry frog.
    • Mickey’s Steam Roller (1934) — Mickey Mouse is driving a steamroller when his rambunctious twin nephews, Morty and Ferdie Fieldmouse, accompanied by Minnie, stroll by. While Mickey flirts with Minnie, the twins hijack the machine and set out on a path of destruction with Mickey in hot pursuit. Mickey winds up being chased by the boys, resulting in a chaotic but happy moment.

    Premiering September 5-8:

    • All Wet (1927) — Hot dog vendor Oswald the lucky rabbit takes a break from the daily grind and poses as a lifeguard to impress lovely beachgoer Fanny Cottontail. When Fanny’s pretend distress turns into real trouble, Oswald rows to the rescue and the pair make waves as they battle their way back to shore.
    • Trolley Troubles (1927) Trolley Troubles launched Walt Disney’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon series (although it was actually the second short to go into production) and features Oswald as a trolley conductor trying to keep things on track. Along the way, he faces a cabin full of rowdy bunny passengers, impossibly steep hills, a stubborn cow, a charging goat and other obstacles.
    • Bone Trouble (1940) — This first official entry in the Pluto cartoon series finds our intrepid pup on the run after stealing a bone from Butch the bulldog, and finding refuge in a carnival “Hall of Mirrors.” His initial fear of the distortions leads to a fun-filled adventure where he takes advantage of the mirrors to fend off Butch.
    • Merbabies (1938) — Walt Disney enlisted former colleagues Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising to help create this underwater Silly Symphony. Ocean waves form merbabies who are summoned to an aquatic circus playground on the ocean floor, where they interact with a parade of seahorses, starfish and other marine life, before disappearing into the surface from which they came.
    • Mickey’s Kangaroo (1935) — Mickey and Pluto spring into action when an Australian friend sends a boxing kangaroo and her child their way. Pluto is hopping mad at first when the visitors wreck his new doghouse and eat his food, but Mickey welcomes the opportunity to have a boxing partner. All’s well that ends well as they come together as a most unusual extended family.
    • Playful Pluto (1934) — Pluto tries to help Mickey with some spring cleaning and leaf gathering, but the day descends into chaos with the arrival of a whirlwind, a leaky hose with a mind all its own, and a fly invasion. Pluto gets into a sticky situation with a roll of flypaper, which leads to some of his most memorable scenes.
    • Pluto, Junior (1942) — Pluto and Pluto Junior are enjoying a lazy afternoon snooze when the playful pup tangles with a ball, a balloon, a worm, a bird and a clothesline. Pluto rescues his son from a precarious situation, gets hung up in the process, but manages to land with a splash.
    • The Barn Dance (1929) — Minnie Mouse has to choose between two dance partners, as clumsy Mickey competes with the more experienced Pete for the pleasure of her company.  Mickey uses balloons to make himself lighter on his feet, but gets busted and comes up short.
    The Barn Dance

    Premiering on October 6:

    • Camping Out (1934) — Mickey, Minnie, Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar are on a camping trip and enjoying the great outdoors until the arrival of a lone mosquito escalates into an all-out attack involving an army of stinging pests. The campers counterattack with some resourceful countermoves.
    • Chips Ahoy (1956) — Hungry chipmunks Chip and Dale are down to their last acorn when they spot an acorn-laden tree belonging to Donald Duck across the lake. Pirating Donald’s ship from inside a bottle, the resourceful duo make their way to the tree, but not without interference from Donald. They take the wind out of Donald’s sail, and end up having the last laugh.
    • Fiddling Around (1930) — Mickey Mouse shows a wide range of expressions and emotions (and even sports long hair) in this one-mouse virtuoso violin performance. He faces an unseen audience and a heckler as he earnestly plays several pieces including the Hungarian Dance and the William Tell Overture. Walt Disney directed this film, which is also known as Just Mickey.
    • Inferior Decorator (1948) — Donald Duck stirs up a hornet’s nest of trouble when he tangles with a bee named Spike, who is trying to pollinate Donald’s floral wallpaper.  When Donald traps Spike with wallpaper glue, it leads to a sparring match between the two. The whole plan backfires when Spike manages to escape and enlist a hive-full of his bee pals to help get revenge.
    • Old MacDonald Duck (1941) — Donald Duck gets into the rhythm of doing his chores around the farm, including feeding the animals and milking Clementine the cow, but finds there’s a fly in the ointment (or rather, the milk) when a persistent fly upsets his plans and drives him to distraction.
    • When the Cat’s Away (1929) — When Tom Cat is away, Mickey, Minnie and group of mischievous mice take over his home and entertain themselves with a variety of musical mayhem. Mickey and Minnie dance across the piano keys, use a wheel of Swiss cheese as a player piano roll, and find an inventive new way to play a phonograph record.
    • Wynken, Blynken and Nod (1938) — This elaborate Silly Symphony cartoon is a dream-like fantasy about three babes who journey to the moon in a wooden shoe-boat.  Along the way, they go star-fishing, and catch a comet in their net to pull them through the night sky. When a storm breaks, they slide to earth on a moonbeam and back into a cradle as one little sleepyhead.
