Together, they play celestial polo, solve mysteries, rescue people, maintain harmony in the empire and, above all, face villains like the evil Magister who is pursuing Tara to steal her magic and conquer OtherWorld. In addition to her missions, Tara leads a personal quest: to find a cure to save her grandfather, who turned himself into a dog by mistake.
Blending 3D CGI and motion-capture techniques, the show promotes key themes and values such as girl empowerment, diversity, bravery, teamwork, inclusion, empathy and self-confidence.

Robot Playground Media (RPM) has recruited a team of top animation companies from APAC and rest of the world to produce the previously announced option pick-up for A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts — a 10-episode animated horror anthology based on award-winning author Ying Chang Compestine’s hit English-language YA book of the same title. Episode 1, titled “Egg Fried Rice,” is currently in production as a pilot order from Singapore’s national media network and largest content creator, Mediacorp.
The project was one of the winning pitches at Mediacorp’s Content Development Pitch 2022 competition, which was part of Creatives Assembly, the company’s annual call for content ideas. The pilot episode, slated for an early 2024 release, has been commissioned for production and will be financed by Mediacorp, with 108 Media co-financing on a series order.
A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts
RPM will be the lead producer for the anthology and has assembled a global lineup of animation studios that will each create its unique horror short, including Igloo Studio (Thailand), Studio Climb (Malaysia), Something Big (France), Disnosc (France), Werlen Meyer (France) and Xanthus Animation (Taiwan). More participating studios are soon to be announced. RPM will be producing two episodes itself, including the pilot.
The series is of 10 self-contained ghost stories laid out as a 10-course “banquet,” complete with appetizers, main courses and dessert, with each different dish representing a ghastly tale of horror unfolding during the Hungry Ghost Festival — a Chinese custom where food offerings are made to appease ghosts roaming the earthly realm during the seventh month of the lunar calendar.
Tapping into the global Chinese diaspora and its cultural influences, particularly its cuisine, each animation studio will bring a distinct vision to these stories set in different cities around the world. RPM says this approach aims to keep the series diverse, authentic and creatively balanced for the global markets.

Netflix today booted up the official teaser trailer for its totally rad futuristic anime action-comedy Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. Coming this fall, the original series flings alternative characters from the worlds of French video game company Ubisoft into reference-packed, neon-tinged homage to the early 1990s.
Synopsis: The year is 1992. The country formerly known as the U.S.A. is now called Eden, a technocracy ruled by propaganda and corruption. Super-soldier Dolph Laserhawk has just been betrayed by the love of his life and locked up in Eden’s top security prison Supermaxx. He must now lead a team of rebel outcasts on risky undercover missions in order to survive.
The series is created and executive produced by Adi Shankar (Castlevania, Devil May Cry), who voices Red from the Niji Six in the show, inspired by Rainbow Six Siege. French comics artist and animator Balak, a.k.a. Yves Bigerel, lends his voice as the sweet but deadly Assassin, Bullfrog, inspired by Assassin’s Creed. Dolph Laserhawk is voiced by Nathaniel Curtis (Witcher: Blood Origin, It’s A Sin), Mark Ebulue (Watch Dogs 2) voices Marcus Holloway and Boris Hiestand (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla) voices Alex.
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is produced by Helene Juguet, Hugo Revon and Gerard Guillemot for Ubisoft Film & Television. Paris-based Bobbypills (Crisis Jung, Peepoodo) is the animation studio, with Mehdi Leffad serving as director of the show and Balak (Lastman) as the studio’s creative director.
Following last year’s finale of the Arthur series after a 25-year run, creator Marc Brown is beginning his next chapter in the world of children’s television with Hop, a new animated preschool series featuring characters with disabilities, greenlit today by Max. Co-creators and fellow Arthur alums Peter K. Hirsch and Tolon Brown, will join Brown in bringing his children’s book illustrations to life in the new show, produced by Epic Story Media and animated by Loomi Animation.
“Even before Arthur ended, I was nurturing a new project about a little frog named Hop, for a younger audience,” said Brown. “As Hop’s world grew in my imagination, I drew inspiration from the great work my friend Fred Rogers had done. With Arthur, we occasionally introduced characters with disabilities, but they never became part of the ensemble cast in any meaningful way. But the characters in Hop reflect many kids who are underrepresented in the media. Some of our characters have disabilities but they never define who they are or what they can achieve. Kids are kids and each one is unique and filled with potential. And kids love to have fun, that’s what Hop is all about!”
Hop follows an eclectic group of besties whose comedic adventures teach preschoolers about embracing their own uniqueness. Led by Hop, an enthusiastic, empathetic frog with one leg shorter than the other, he and his quirky friends address kid-relatable problems with a healthy dose of laughter, silliness and adventure. Epic has engaged advocacy nonprofit RespectAbility — dedicated to fighting stigma and advancing opportunity for people with disabilities — to consult on the series.
Set in the aspirational community of Fair Village, every episode is grounded in emotional reality but soars into the world of fantasy, populated by dragons, trolls, talking banjos and magic crayons. With a gentle balance of humor and heart, our heroes go on fun escapades to discover that they can overcome any obstacle with perseverance, creativity, and teamwork. Together, they show us the power of friendship and kindness as they navigate the mud puddles of life.
“We’re extremely proud of our work and collaboration with industry experts on representing characters in an inclusive way,” said Ken Faier of Epic. “It is an honor to have developed ‘Hop’ with Marc, Peter and Tolon who know how to engage not only today’s youth but parents looking for quality content. We believe Hop will have longevity in the marketplace for many years to come.”
Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network & Boomerang, added, “Marc is a legend in children’s programming, having created one of the most iconic television shows that has garnered almost every honor imaginable. Hop exudes everything families love about Arthur, but with a fresh cast of modern characters that authentically represent the sundry of little eyes watching TV.”
The series stars:
Hop (voiced by David Connolly) – Hop is an outgoing six-year-old frog with one leg shorter than the other, whose superpower is empathy. He lives on a houseboat with Penny and runs a retro-diner called the Lilypad that also functions as the gang’s clubhouse. A natural-born leader, Hop spearheads the group on their zany adventures and embodies what it means to be an accepting, caring and supportive friend. Broadway actor and disability advocate David Connolly voices Hop. Connolly is a recipient of the Premier of Ontario’s Award of Excellence in Applied Arts and happens to be a double below-knee amputee. He is the first amputee to have performed on Broadway.
Penny (voiced by Moneesha “Misha” Bakshi) – Penny is Hop’s slightly older sibling. Silly, goofy and bubbling with enthusiastic energy, Penny often seems like they’re spinning out of the control. Penny is a source of broad physical comedy and with their quirky sense of humor and talking banjo, Penny is the lovable clown of the group.
Hoot (voiced by Makeda Bromfield) – Like her name suggests, Hoot is the life of the party. Charming, scatterbrained, and a bit of a diva, Hoot is the character with big dreams and an even bigger heart. She lives on an organic farm with several disobedient chickens, a playful cow and an erudite talking car named Jinx. Hoot is an affectionate, whimsical spirit with a sixth sense for finding the fun in any task.
Filipa (voiced by Charlotte Walker) – Filipa is a fiercely intelligent squirrel who lives in the woods in an elaborate treehouse which she built herself with the help of her magical crayon, Grape Lightning. She is precise, honest and always says exactly what’s on her mind. Although no one has ever diagnosed her, Filipa is neuro-divergent; a disdain for loud noises and big crowds comes along with her passionate creativity. However, the Hoppers accept her just the way she is, and in return she is the most loyal friend they could ever ask for. Filipa is voiced by Charlotte Walker, a new voice actor and current student at George Brown College in Toronto who also happens to be autistic.
Benny (voiced by Jake Shannon) – Benny is an alligator who may look fearsome, but is the sweetest, shyest — and most neurotic — one of the group. He’s afraid of spiders, mayonnaise, small spaces, wide spaces and all spaces in between. But with the help of his friends, along with his knight-doll Brave Sir Ben, there’s no fear Benny cannot face — and even have fun while facing it! Benny loves reading and he’s a gifted inventor and storyteller, which is why he runs the local book-toy-and-game library.
Alfred (voiced by Makeda Bromfield) – Alfred Beaver is the youngest member of the group and even though his snooty older brother and sister (Ronny & Lonny) disapprove of him associating with such frivolous characters, Alfred takes every opportunity he can to hang out with the Hoppers. Alfred is wide-eyed, open-hearted and irrepressibly eager to learn from Hop and try to do things on his own. Even though he’s very innocent, he’s no pushover, and Alfred takes on challenges with a heaping dose of grit and determination.
As the Annecy Festival celebrates animation from Mexico this week, London-based sales agency WestEnd Films has announced that it has partnered with Lupus Films on their forthcoming hand-drawn animated feature about the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Las Dos Fridas.
Written and directed by BAFTA Award-winning writer and director Paloma Baeza (Poles Apart, The House), herself of Mexican descent, Las Dos Fridas will explore the reasons why Kahlo still captivates 65 years after her death:
With a visual style inspired by the artist’s paintings and illustrations, Las Dos Fridas will form a rich canvas of a life filled with laughter, romance and pain as it focuses on the key moments which changed Kahlo’s life — from the motor accident that permanently disabled her and led her to paint, to her tumultuous love affairs with life partner and soul mate, Diego Rivera, and photographer Nickolas Muray.
Combined with a dramatized depiction of Kahlo’s vivid imagination and entering the surreal worlds of some of her most famous works, the film will paint a searingly intimate and beautiful portrait of this multi-faceted icon.
The film is helmed by an all-female team which includes Baeza, producers Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding of Lupus Films (Kensuke’s Kingdom, Ethel & Ernest, The Tiger Who Came to Tea) and award-winning art director Sharon Liu (The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Nina Simone: Color Is a Wonderful Thing).
WestEnd Films will sell the film under its WeLove label, launched to promote female talent and bring female driven content to serve audiences across all genres.
“We are delighted to be working with the talented team at Lupus Films, we have long admired their imaginative and moving adult animations,” said Maya Amsellem, Co-Founder of WestEnd Films. “Paloma is a real talent and together they are the perfect team to paint a picture of this inspirational icon of female creativity, the film will be as raw and honest as Frida’s own biographical paintings.”
Lupus Films Co-Founder Deakin agreed, “We are really excited to have WestEnd Films aboard this very special project. Like us, they are a female owned and led company and their reputation of working with female talent across an incredibly diverse set of feature films speaks for itself. We are thrilled that they are as excited by the creative potential of Las Dos Fridas as we are.”
Las Dos Fridas has been developed with the assistance of the BFI (British Film Institute).
Disney today unveiled the official trailer for the new Pixar Animation Studios short Carl’s Date, based on the Oscar-winning animated feature Up and featuring the final performance of the late Ed Asner as our heroic curmudgeon, Carl. The short will run exclusively in theaters starting June 16, in front of Pixar’s Elemental — marking a return to the studio’s tradition of pairing shorts and features for a special theatrical experience.
Written and directed by Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins, Carl’s Date goes home with Carl Fredricksen (Asner) and his lovable talking dog, Dug (Peterson), who were introduced in Up. Moviegoers will catch up with Carl as he reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a lady friend — but admittedly has no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends — if you’re a dog.
Portfolio Entertainment shared the sad news today (Friday, June 9) that the studio’s co-founding partner & CEO, Joy Rosen, has died. The warmly remembered animation executive passed peacefully on June 8, surrounded by family. She was 65 years old.
Rosen and long-time colleague, friend and business partner Lisa Olfman founded Portfolio in 1991. Launched in a spare bedroom with a borrowed typewriter, Rosen and Olfman transformed their ambitious startup into a leading production, distribution and animation company of kids and family entertainment with a roster that includes the Daytime Emmy-nominated PBS series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about That!, starring Martin Short, Hero Elementary, Doki and Groundling Marsh.
“We at Portfolio are heartbroken” says Olfman, Portfolio’s co-CEO. “Joy was my partner, my best friend, my sister-in-arms. Words can’t describe what a huge loss this is to her family, her friends, and to those in the business community who knew her. We will miss her tremendous heart, her wicked sense of humor and her buoyant optimism. A piece of us died today, but we will forever honor her legacy.”
Rosen led Portfolio’s global distribution division and molded it into a top player. Recognized for her intelligent deal-making and enduring relationships with both international broadcasters and content providers, Rosen was a consummate entrepreneur. Her strategic vision and indefatigable optimism were instrumental in the company’s multi-faceted expansion and in 2015 the partners launched Portfolio Animation, a state of the art animation studio.
Among her many industry distinctions, Rosen, together with Olfman, was awarded the 2015 WIFT-T Crystal Award for Outstanding Achievement in Business, the Rotman Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and was named in Profit Magazine‘s Top 100 Female Business Owners and Animation Magazine’s Top 25 Rising Women in the Business.
Born October 2, 1957 to Delores and Harry Rosen, Joy Lori Rosen was married to Dr. Lawrence Freedman for 39 years, and mother to Erin, Michaela and Evan Freedman — her children being, she always said, her greatest achievement. Rosen is also survived by her siblings Paula (Stephen Toope) and Eric Rosen (Rachel Nelson), and predeceased by her father.
