  • ‘Red Iron Road’ Anthology Premieres S2 at Annecy with Santa Scary ‘In The Heat’

‘Red Iron Road’ Anthology Premieres S2 at Annecy with Santa Scary ‘In The Heat’

The second season of Lakeside Animation’s horror anthology series Red Iron Road will launch with the world premiere of “In The Heat” at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France (June 1-17). The crime thriller tale is the only Canadian project selected for the TV Films competition, where it will compete with titles from major players such as Netflix’s Agent Elvis, The Sandman and ONI: Thunder Gods Tale, and HBO Max’s Scavengers Reign.

The episode is the second short film produced in collaboration with Look Mom! Productions, and helmed by the award-winning team of director Sam Chou and writer Ellery Vandooyeweert. They previously collaborated on festival favorite “VRDLK: Family of Vurdulak.” The season one episode premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2022, and since then has garnered a dozen festival awards worldwide.

Red Iron Road is created by Aljosha Klimov and Iouri Stepanov, produced by Lakeside Animation and Studio Metrafilms Moldova. The first season features six episodes based on the works of famous European authors. The “In The Heat” episode was adapted from the short story of the same name, by the “Russian queen of horror,” Anna Starobinets.

“In The Heat” is a gripping 17-minute animated thriller that defies genre conventions. The story begins with investigators interrogating a man disguised as Santa Claus over a heinous crime. As the plot unfolds, the detectives become increasingly absorbed in the case, realizing that the outcome is intertwined with their own past experiences. The situation becomes more intricate and twisted (and horrific) as the investigators embark on a shocking journey that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

“We are thrilled to see our continued collaboration with Sam, Ellery and the team at Look Mom! has been recognized by Annecy. Sam and Ellery are wonderfully talented and richly deserve this honor. We are all excited to share this story with the festival audience this June,” commented Lakeside CEO & Executive Producer Stepanov.

Chou, Creative Director of Development for Look Mom! Productions, said, “Being selected for the Annecy Film Festival is an absolute honor and a career highlight. Competing with the best in animation on television is a surreal experience. It’s a lifelong dream that I have worked hard for in my career, and being recognized by Annecy is a humbling achievement.”

Red Iron Road has circled the globe as episodes have premiered at film festivals around the world. Since its premiere last year, episodes have screened in festivals including Toronto After Dark, Lusca Fantastic Film Fest (Puerto Rico), FilmQuest (Utah), Rojo Sangre Horror Film Festival (Buenos Aires), New York City Horror Film Festival, Tokyo Anime Awards, Nevermore Film Festival (North Carolina) and several others, with over 14 awards and recognitions to date.

Lakeside Animation’s Stepanov and Chief Content Officer Aron Dunn will be in attendance at Annecy to discuss the Red Iron Road series and the studio’s slate of projects in development.

Look Mom! Productions’ Managing Director Josh Bowen and episode director Chou will also be in attendance at Annecy.

  • Disney Animation Workers Hold Solidarity Walk for Union Bid

Disney Animation Workers Hold Solidarity Walk for Union Bid

Today (Monday, April 3) at noon, The Animation Guild leadership and Walt Disney Animation Studios artists joined Walt Disney Animation Studios production workers in a Solidarity Walk at Disney Studios. A supermajority of the production workers has expressed interest in being represented by the Union, and the walk was in response to studio leadership’s refusal to voluntarily recognize the organizing effort and their exclusion of specific job categories, specifically production managers and production supervisors.

More than 100 animation production workers and artists gathered at the Roy E. Disney Animation Building to hear words of support from The Animation Guild’s Business Representative Steve Kaplan. The group then walked the perimeter of the studio lot, along Riverside Drive, Buena Vista Street and Alameda Street to the entrance of the Michael D. Eisner Building, where a group of 12 representatives presented a petition to Mark Stubbington, Vice President, Labor Relations Counsel, Walt Disney Pictures and Television. The solidarity petition was signed by more than 18,000 animators, production workers and supporters.

“This is a historic day where The Animation Guild members are backing a group of people who are seeking to gain voluntary recognition from the company. It’s disappointing that the company is putting us in a position to have to justify what they’ve already provided other managers and supervisors across the entertainment industry,” Kaplan stated. “I’m proud to be able to stand with the group today to show that there is a majority of support for representation.”

Guild Business Representative Steve Kaplan speaks to the crowd
Guild Business Representative Steve Kaplan speaks to the crowd at the April 3 Disney production workers Solidary Walk.

In their push to join the Union, the production workers are demanding an end to unsustainable workplace practices such as low wages, unpaid overtime and unrealistic schedules. While the petition was being presented, production workers and Animation Guild members gave speeches to the crowd.

“[Disney] knows there are thousands of people like me willing to take a pay cut to follow their dreams, and they have taken advantage of it for long enough. It’s time for production management to be treated as the skilled craft that it is. And time for us to be paid a reasonable wage for the cost of living in Los Angeles,” said walk participant Jillian Howell, a production coordinator. “I have a career working for successful movies that are known across the globe, that are merchandised and profit well. I should not have to dog-sit and borrow money from my parents in order to make ends meet.”

    Disney Production Workers
Disney production workers, April 3, 2023.

Justin Weber, animator, Disney Shop Steward and a Guild Board Member, asserted, “Our production co-workers deserve a seat at the table just like the rest of the artists and technical directors, and we stand proudly with them in solidarity as they rightfully demand representation.”

The Animation Guild, also known as Local 839 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), was founded in 1952. The labor union represents more than 5,000 artists, technicians and writers in the animation industry, advocating for workers to improve wages and conditions.

As the industry continues to grow, it is creating even more opportunities for local animators to showcase South Africa’s unique storytelling and creative talent to the world, and it will continue to be championed by the Cape Town International Animation Festival, which is the largest dedicated African animation festival on the continent. With an exciting hybrid program of talks, workshop, screenings, producer meetings, business-to-business sessions and more, CTIAF provides an opportunity to engage with global industry leaders, shine a spotlight on African talent and create a platform for connections and sharing of knowledge between local animators and their international counterparts.

CTIAF organizers point out that the impact of South African animators is not only creative; their work has also had a significant economic impact, creating jobs and driving innovation in the industry. According to a report by the National Film and Video Foundation, the animation industry in South Africa is growing at a rate of 5% per year and employs over 3,000 people.

    The Soloists

“We’ve witnessed the incredible growth of animation in South Africa, and year after year we’re continuously impressed by the immense success local artists have achieved, and we continue to advocate for, and promote these incredible achievements,” says Festival Director Dianne Makings. “We’re elated to continue this celebratory streak at this year’s Cape Town International Animation Festival as we recognize, engage with and learn from the talent that has put us on the map, but most importantly we’re look to empower the next generation of animators while holding a spotlight to the work that continues to come from the continent.”

South African animators like Celeste Jamneck are being celebrated globally. Now lecturing at the Savannah Collage of Art and Design (U.S.), she attributes her career growth to the work she’s done as part of the team behind acclaimed animated short The Soloists, garnered over 113 festivals mentioned, won over 20 awards, was nominated for a Student BAFTA and celebrated the win of an Annie Award in Los Angeles.

    The Smeds and the Smoos
    The Smeds and the Smoos

The success of South African animators has also inspired others in the country to pursue careers in the industry. The availability of high-quality training and job opportunities has created a pipeline of talent that is driving the industry forward.

An example of inspirational industry player includes Triggerfish Animation Studios, which has gained worldwide recognition for its feature films and television series. Triggerfish films such as Adventures in Zambezia and Khumba have been distributed internationally and received critical acclaim. As contributors to Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated, Emmy-winning productions, the studio once again uplifts African animation in Disney+ anthology series Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire (2023), highlights the talent of animators from South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt.

This year’s CTIAF will feature a program dedicated to this impactful work and speakers including Samantha Cutler, who joins the line-up of esteemed artists at the festival this year, and will be presenting alongside Snaddon on the making of The Smeds and the Smoos.

  • ‘Moana’ Star Dwayne Johnson Reveals Live-Action Version in Development

‘Moana’ Star Dwayne Johnson Reveals Live-Action Version in Development

Dwayne Johnson revealed today in a recorded message from Hawaii that a live-action reimagining of Disney Animation’s hit CG animated feature film Moana is in development. The announcement was shared by Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger during The Walt Disney Company’s Meeting of Shareholders Webcast.

The new feature film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. Executive producers include Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 film, and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush and Samoan industry pro Dana Ledoux Miller will also take part in the production.

Bush, who was a director and co-writer of Disney’s Oscar-winning feature Encanto and a writer and co-director on Disney’s Oscar-winning film Zootopia, wrote the screenplay for the animated Moana.

Like its animated predecessor, the new film will celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path. Moana’s journey of self-discovery and reflection on the lives of her ancestors won hearts worldwide, as did her newfound friendship with an exiled demigod named Maui.

Johnson, who voice starred as Maui in the original pic and plans to return to set sail with Moana once more, shared:

“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen. This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.

“I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”

Native Hawaiian actor Cravalho, who helped shape Moana in the original film, said of the protagonist’s reach, “She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses. Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring — to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”

Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production (Disney Live Action), noted that the film would join a successful lineup of live-action adaptations that include 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, 2019’s Aladdin and the highly anticipated live-action version of The Little Mermaid, opening May 26.

“It’s still early, but the idea of working with these fantastic partners to tell such a meaningful story on a live-action canvas, particularly as we celebrate 100 years of storytelling at Disney, is thrilling,” said Bailey.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana debuted in theaters on Nov. 23, 2016, grossing nearly $644 million in global box office. The title, which debuted on Disney+ with the streamer’s 2019 launch, is among the top 15 movies streamed in the United States in 2022. The film was nominated for the Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globes for animated feature.

The film’s soundtrack, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, was lauded worldwide. Miranda won a Grammy for best song written for visual media as well as Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for original song for “How Far I’ll Go”. In 2021, the Moana soundtrack broke a Billboard Soundtrack chart record for the amount of time spent at number one (52 weeks).
