Everyone’s favorite fast-food trio from Adult Swim creators Dave Willis (Squidbillies, Space Ghost Coast to Coast) and Matt Maiellaro (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, 12 oz. Mouse), Aqua Teen Hunger Force is coming together for the first time on a supersized 20-DVD complete collection from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The Baffler Meal Complete Collectionincludes all 140 episodes from the hit series’ 11 season run, as well as the first theatrical film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, plus hours of bonus content. With over 30 hours of surreal comedy chaos to binge, the collection is priced to own at $112.99 SRP for the DVD ($129.99 in Canada).
Three unique detectives, the Aqua Teen Hunger Force share a rental house in New Jersey. This mystery-solving trio is comprised of human-sized food products: Master Shake (voiced by Dana Snyder), the big-mouthed, self-appointed team leader with a short attention span and no work ethic; Frylock (Carey Means), the only reasonable member of the group, who happens to be a box of French-fried potatoes — spuds with power; and Meatwad (Dave Willis), a talented round mound of meat who can take the shape of a hot dog or an igloo.
Together, this triple threat tackles unusual cases from the luxury of a neighbor’s swimming pool — unless they’re confronted by danger. Then, of course, the three run like hell.
Baffler Meal Complete Collection bonus features TBA.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is also available to own on Digital.

DreamWorks Animation today highlighted a new chapter for the Oscar-winning studio of Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Trolls, The Boss Baby and Kung Fu Pandafranchises, revealing details about two upcoming studio presentations at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 13-18, annecy.org).
The two presentations, for DreamWorks’ upcoming holiday film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and its recent breakout hit film, The Bad Guys, reflect the fresh creative direction of DreamWorks Animation President Margie Cohn, which fuses reinvigorated chapters of DreamWorks’ beloved franchises with bold, new originals. The Bad Guys was the first film greenlit by Cohn under her leadership.
“DreamWorks Animation has an unmatched legacy of creating stories and characters that have become an intrinsic part of global culture and that are beloved by fans of all ages everywhere in the world,” said Cohn. “We are honored to continue that tradition at Annecy as we open this new chapter at the studio, and we’re excited to partner with some of the most innovative and visionary artists working in animation today to bring new stories and inventive approaches to the screen.”
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ features the voices of Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén and Antonio Banderas
On Tuesday, June 14, at 2 p.m., at Petite salle de Bonlieu, DreamWorks Animation will present a First-Look Screening Event of the making of its upcoming holiday film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (in theaters Dec. 21), the long-awaited follow-up to the 2011 Academy Award-nominated blockbuster. During the big FMX art and tech confab in Stuttgart, Oscar-winning VFX studio and leaders in digital human technology, Digital Domain, introduced “Zoey” as the world’s most advanced autonomous human.
Powered by machine learning and created using an advanced version of the technology and process that helped bring Thanos to the big screen, the photorealistic Zoey can engage in conversations with multiple participants at once, remember people, access the internet to answer questions and more, paving the way for the next step in the evolution of AI.
“With the potential of the metaverse and continued advancements in AI, the desire to interact with autonomous humans face-to-face is becoming more important and part of modern life,” said Daniel Seah, Global CEO of Digital Domain. “For decades, Digital Domain has been pioneering digital human technology, and Zoey takes the concepts of virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri several steps further, creating a digital helper you can truly interact with.”
Zoey
Building on its proof-of-concept autonomous human, “Douglas,” Zoey is the result of years of research and development from the award-winning visual effects house, spearheaded by its internal Digital Humans Group.
The physical appearance of Zoey is based on actress Zoey Moses (Yellowstone, Reflection), who worked with Digital Domain to create a comprehensive set of facial movements and mannerisms, as well as a full range of emotive expressions. Using that data and its proprietary facial animation tool Charlatan — recently seen in blockbuster films, including the Oscar-nominated Free Guy — artists were able to take the real footage of Moses and create a flexible digital face, capable of reacting in real time.
To give Zoey her personality, Digital Domain used multiple forms of machine learning to ensure she could understand most questions and formulate proper replies, and then access the internet (or stored data) for its answer. But rather than simply give a verbal or text response, Zoey can fully emote. If a question is confusing, she will look perplexed; if she is told a joke, she’ll smile. Throughout a conversation, Zoey will also move and fidget in accordance with her answers, and even get annoyed when interrupted. She can engage with participants, asking them questions and opinions, and facial recognition software lets her recognize and remember people.
Zoey
Chatbots can also be added, giving Zoey the potential to quickly assume the role of an established virtual assistant for deployment in hospitality, the service industry and much more.
To provide Zoey with a robust and flexible voice system capable of more than just reciting scripted answers, Digital Domain employed AI-powered text-to-speech technology from WellSaid Labs (wellsaidlabs.com). Using WellSaid Labs’ tools, Zoey can access a vast vocabulary of words and phrases, ensuring that no answer is beyond its capacity to vocalize.
There are also multiple options to control the tone of her replies, including different levels of enthusiasm to reflect the goal of the interactions. For a retail setting, for instance, a more upbeat approach would be required, where a conversation would be more level. Zoey also has the ability to expand her speech capabilities by incorporating multiple language packs, making her fully bilingual.
Zoey
Once Zoey is “educated” and ready to interact with the real world, she can then be added to multiple platforms, including custom systems designed by potential users, or game engines like Unity and Epic Games’ software. For her introductory presentation at FMX, Zoey was seen running in real time on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.
“For the last 30 years, Digital Domain has been one of the world leaders behind some of the most sophisticated and memorable visual effects ever seen, so it was a natural progression for us to become a leader in digital and virtual humans and to create ‘Zoey,’ the world’s most advanced autonomous human,” said John Fragomeni, global president of Digital Domain. “We will continue to push the boundaries of visual effects in all fields and on any screen, as we look for ways to offer people a better experience, regardless of the medium or delivery platform.”
Zoey will be available to license from Digital Domain in the near future.

The agreement grants an exclusive license for a period of seven years from the date of completion of the episodes for free TV, pay TV, pay per view, VoD and ancillary rights for the Italian territory.
The show, which is a Mondo TV Studios’ project, is now entering its pre-production phase in Tenerife. It was created by writer and producer Myriam Ballesteros (Lucky Fred,Lola & Virginia, Mimi and Mr.Bobo). Annie & Carola is the story of Carola, a lonely, nerdy girl with no social skills, who desperately wants a best friend — someone who will share her love of science, always agree with her and protect her from the terrifying teen world at school. So, she decides to build herself one. But things don’t go quite as planned, and her robot companion, Annie, turns out to be her complete opposite! Disguised as a “foreign student,” the excitable, emotional Annie keeps dragging Carola into all the situations she hates and making Carola confront her fears. But despite all their differences, Annie and Carola complement and help each other, learning to be true friends.
“This is a show that is relevant to teens, but especially teen girls and the world they live in. We are therefore thrilled to be bringing to the screen two powerful and inspiring characters such as Annie & Carola in a show that is not only highly original and very funny, but it also has a strong storyline and, importantly, the backing of a number of leading broadcasters and producers,” said Maria Bonaria Fois, CEO of Mondo TV Studios. “This show also has strong potential across multiple media. We’re very happy to have the collaboration of RAI for a show that we are certain will entertain, engage and amuse audiences across Italy.”
Mondo TV and the show’s partners believe it stands out for its sparkling dialog and hilarious scenarios, as well as its special focus in each episode on the emotions of its animated stars — and teens in genearal. In addition, the colorful cast of characters are each hiding a secret which will be unveiled at different points in the series, driving the story and allowing these characters to evolve in unexpected ways.
Luca Milano, Director Rai Ragazzi, added, “Annie & Carola is a brilliant show with a strong storytelling and engaging characters. We are confident that it will captivate also those kids and tweens that may tend to move away from animation. We are pleased to introduce Annie and Carola to our public on RAI’s TV channels.”

Sunny Side Ups
This year’s Top Prize winner is Sunny Side Ups, from Studio Selfish LLC (studio-selfish.jp) in the Suginami City special ward. A 13 x 7′ 2D/3D preschool comedy series full of imagination which explores new experiences from a child’s perspective, the project is conceived and led by Taka Kato (director, character designer, art director) and Emi Ozawa (producer), with Flying Ship Studio on board as a produciton partner. (In early pre-producion.
Synopsis: Five-year-old alien Emmy lives on Earth, which she has always dreamed of. Whenever she encounters something new and interesting, she uses her special powers of imagination to enter thrilling new worlds. Emmy and her friends ride banana boats, play on a giant apple peel slide, and work together to tame a pineapple monster. The children come from various backgrounds and each is unique. They sometimes clash with one another, but they enjoy Emmy’s world of “pretend play” with its freedom of imagination and variety of ideas.
Creator’s comment: This is a delightful story which stimulates and encourages the creative imagination of children. Since Emmy is an alien, it is easy to accept her outlandish attitudes and “differences” in values. Through this story, you will feel that “uniqueness is wonderful”, “being different is interesting” and “having friends” is fun. This project is intended to build a foundation for enjoying diversity while watching and laughing at the animation.
Prize Winners:

Timid Muumuu
Timid Muumuu
Preschool, 52 x 11′, Cut-out 2D, Early Pre-Production Created by: Rika Asakawa (director, planning & character design) | Artworks, Hachioji City | rika-awakawa.art
Synopsis: Muumuu is a very scared and sensitive five-year-old kitten who lives by a forest. He is scared of many things around him; sometimes they are shadows, sometimes they are plants, sometimes they are creatures. However, the truth is that most of Muumuu’s feeling of fear come from what he doesn’t understand. Muumuu overcomes his fears by learning from the “little experts” around him who are a little bit more knowledgeable about science and living creatures.
Comment: The concept of this animation series is “knowledge is kindness/” As Muumuu acquires knowledge, he is able to overcome his fears and becomes kinder. At the same time, I wanted to create an animation project that could widen the horizons of viewers and encourage them to be kinder.
The Last Diviner, Hana
The Last Diviner, Hana
Young Adult, 8 x 22′, Early Pre-production Created by: Hitomi Toyonaga, Toshiya Kusano, Hiroki Taniguchi (producers) | Ekura Animal Inc., Nishitokyo City | anime.or.jp
Synopsis: At the end of the Edo period in the late 19th century, Hana Kadei lives with her father, a failed “on-myo-ji” (diviner) for the imperial house, in a mountainous area of Kyoto. One day Tsuchimikado, the head Kyoto on-myo-ji, summons Hana and her father to join him in battle to protect the Emperor. Tsuchimikado’s intention is to recover the authority of on-myo-ji, which had been lost for many years. As the head of the Kadei family after her father’s death, Hana is assigned to guard the Imperial Palace — but as a woman, she is looked down upon by male on-myo-ji and samurai. She must even battle powerful, enemy on-myo-ji, who have joined the Shogunate forces against the Emperor.
Comment: For the past three years, I have been going to Kyoto to research on the last days of on-myo-ji. The theme of the story is diversity. Initially, the tradition of the on-myo-ji, which lasted for a thousand years, is only seen from one angle by the protagonist. Her experiences with different people enable her to understand how diverse the on-myo-ji are. Through this story, I want to convey the idea that humanity is rich in diversity. Moreover, I hope the story of Hana, who survives in the male-dominated society of on-mayo-ji, will inspire women in Japan to work for women’s social progress.

On his way meet his idol, a meteorite hits his spaceship. He has to make an emergency landing on Earth, and he doesn’t know where he is. Although he doesn’t know anything about Earth, he starts to enjoy terrestrial life thanks to his curiosity and love of a challenge.
Comment: As he is lost on Earth, where he knows nothing, BYTHEWAY’s personality leads him to take on various challenges. Of course, they are not always fun. He has many troubles and failures, too, but he learns quickly and matures through these experiences. There are many new things, cultures, and ideas in this world that you don’t know, yet. From the cool and stylish coffee float glass, to the small but powerful espresso cup, we learn more about these unique personalities and their dramatic daily adventures. Just like that first coffee in the morning, discovering this series will immediately brighten up your day!
Comment: Of course, Tokyo’s cafes are a place of fun, laughter and chatter. But sometimes, they can also be a place of quiet reflection. When I first began working full-time in the city, I would regularly visit my favorite coffee shop to think and to work through the stresses of the day. This series is inspired by that experience. Those small moments with just my thoughts and a cup of coffee were so valuable to me, and I want to share that joy with as many people as possible!

‘’This is a major milestone for the Irish animation sector on both sides of the border,” said Animation Ireland Chief Executive Ronan McCabe. “There has always been a great spirit of collaboration in the animation sector and that is what this announcement is all about. By working together, we can all help ensure the island of Ireland continues to grow its reputation as a leading international hub for animation production. With global broadcast sales and licensing activity for its hit preschool property Paddles ramping up and production well under way on its newest preschool property, Ling Ling, state-of-the art animation and media company FuturumKids has announced development plans for a major new property based on the children’s book Charlie’s Ark.
The story centers on Charlie, a five-year-old boy, and the ark-shaped toybox in which he keeps his toy animals with their ark-inspired rainbow top-knots, manes and tails. But these are not just toys; they all come to life when Charlie whispers the magic ‘wordspell’, and together Charlie and the toys have many magical adventures.
The books are created and written by Mike Payne, who also lends his award-winning illustration talents to the stories alongside Adam Pescott. Payne is the creator and original artist of the globally popular grey, blue-nosed bear ‘Tatty Teddy’, which he drew for 17 years.
The 52 x 11′ animated series, which has already started production in Ireland and Las Palmas, aims to replicate the emotionally engaging style and charming storylines of the books to create cross-generational appeal. The concept received a very positive reception at MIPTV in April, FuturumKids reports.
Charlie’s Ark
Longer-term plans will include licensing and merchandising, building on Payne’s enormous success in commercial greeting card design, books and gift concepts that have sold hundreds of millions worldwide. FuturumKids includes members of the team behind the seven-time Emmy Award-winning children’s series Jakers!, as well as senior figures from HIT Entertainment and its global franchises Bob the Builder, Barney and Thomas & Friends.
“With two children’s shows already broadcasting or in production we were keen to build on our success to date. However, we needed to find the right property to support our growing reputation as a producer of quality children’s entertainment,” said Eamon Mac Giolla Bhuí, CCO at FuturumKids. “Charlie’s Ark is just that property. Both visually and as a magical piece of storytelling it’s ideal for children’s TV. We’re looking forward enormously to developing Charlie’s delightful adventures for the screen.”

There were about 20,000 audience members in the cinemas and other venues. After a slow start at the Open Air due to the weather, the weekend brought in almost 25,000 viewers.
FMX 2022
The 26th edition of FMX – Film & Media Exchange came to a successful close on Friday, May 6. Over three days on site at Stuttgart’s Haus der Wirtschaft and one online day, the conference brought the best of media & entertainment creation on stage. Due to the ongoing pandemic, FMX had already decided at the end of April to limit the sale of on-site tickets in order to achieve an audience size that was comfortable for everyone involved, and reached its self-imposed target of 3,300 participants.
Under the theme “Changing the Game,” more than 300 international speakers gave insights into the latest projects and developments in film and media production — from animation, visual effects, immersive and interactive media to storytelling, production management and sustainability — in more than 180 presentations and 60 live Q&As on site and online. Among them were the Oscar-winning film Dune, the stop-motion anthology The House, the hit animation series Arcane and presentations by industry legends such as Chris Corbould and Paul Debevec. The FMX audience was as international as ever, with people from more than 60 countries around the world attending. Most presentations will remain available on the FMX website via video on demand until the end of May.
Animation Production Days 2022
Rounding off the bustling Stuttgart schedule, the Animation Production Days (APD) presented Germany’s most important business platform for animation projects in development as a hybrid event from May 4-6. A joint venture by ITFS and FMX, APD 2022 offered a selection of 35 projects to be presented to potential partners. Approximately a quarter of these projects were for preschool children, around half for school children up to 12 (or so) and another quarter for adolescent and/or adult audiences.
A total of 150 participants from 22 countries registered for the event, which in person took place in a somewhat smaller form than usual due to the COVID-19 restrictions — 110 participants were able to attend in person in Stuttgart with another 40 participants accredited for the online program. Almost 700 pre-planned meetings between producers and potential financing and production partners took place at the Württemberg State Museum. Representatives from the most important German and European TV broadcasters and large international corporations such as Disney, WarnerMedia and Wildbrain as well as global distributors including ZDF Studios, Sola Media, Global Screen, Jetpack, Zodiak and many more sought out new material and talent at APD and gave the producers feedback on their newly developed projects.
ITFS 2022 Award Winners
International Competition – State of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart Grand Award for Animated Film —Bestia, Hugo Covarrubias, Chile (Trebol 3 Producciones)
Based on true events, the film tells the story of a secret police investigator during the military dictatorship in Chile. Her relationship with her dog, her body and her fears reflect the rupture of her soul and the soul of the country.
Jury statement: Bestia is a complex, multi-layered, infinitely re-watchable portrait of a torturer. A person who surfaces over and over again throughout human history. It is a puzzling, mysterious, and genuinely disturbing piece of art.
Special Mention 1 — Hysteresis, Robert Seidel, Germany
Seidel’s drawings merge with performer Tsuki and machine learning strategies in a feedback system to create a pulsating flow of images in folded spatial configurations. Oval’s music also makes the viewer lose contact with the last points of reference.
Jury statement:Hysteresis takes us into the world of fine arts, where painting, body art, dance and contemporary music intertwine. Experimental animation at its best, innovative and enjoyable!
Special Mention 2 — Steakhouse, Špela Čadež; France, Germany, Slovenia (Finta film, Fabian&Fred, RTV, Miyu Distribution)
The steak has been marinating for days. The pan is heated. Franc’s stomach is rumbling. But Lisa’s colleagues surprise her with a birthday party. Will Lisa be home in time for dinner?
Jury statement: A brave and shocking study of passive aggression in a relationship. A quiet but powerful rebellion against the ordinary familiarity of domestic abuse. The artwork and beautifully observed acting create a suffocating atmosphere. However the window is open and the smoke slowly clears, leaving us some room for hope.
Jury: Steven Appleby (London), Renaud Armanet (Cannes), Joanna Quinn (Cardiff), Thomas Renolnder (Vienna), Anna Samo (New York)
The Immoral
Lotte Reiniger Promotion Award for Animated Film — The Immoral, Ekin Koca, France (La Poudrière)
The guest of a restaurant collapses. The other guests, except for one, are in a state of shock.
Jury Statement: A simple and dramatic comment on the savagery and dangers of the group mentality, told with delightfully dark humor and beautifully observed body language.
SWR OnlineFilm Audience Award — To the Last Drop, Simon Schnellmann, Germany (abwerner.ch)
During chemotherapy, an infusion stand fights for the life of a patient.
Underwater Love
Young Animation — Underwater Love; Andrea Falzone, Maria Cristina Fiore, Veronica Martiradonna; Italy (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia)
A girl has many questions towards herself and she faces her problems with some monsters. Anger turns her into a wasp, underwater she meets a king. She cries excessively, turns all red and finally she grows, big as a giant.
Jury statement: The main award goes to the authentic, punk and imperfect film Underwater Love, which is about an emotional carousel called life. The raw, vibrant technique perfectly supports a passionate story of becoming a woman. The jury was amazed by the shameful, courageous animation, and the openness of the directors to risk and explore.
Special Mention — The Seine’s Tears; Alice Letailleur, Eliott Benard, Etienne Moulin, Hadrien Pinot, Lisa Vicente, Nicolas Mayeur, Philippine Singer, Yanis Belaid; France (Je Regarde, Pôle 3D)
On 17 October 1961, workers from Algeria take to the streets of Paris to protest against the curfew imposed by the police. The day later goes down in history as the “Paris Massacre”.
Jury statement: The Special Mention goes to the film Les Larmes de la Seine which is about the clash of ideas and the brutal forces of history that tend to repeat themselves. It is a poetic story made with an impressive cinematographic and technical mastery.
Jury: François Chalet (Zurich), Flavie Darchen (Cannes), Aneta Ozorke (Amsterdam)
Flee
AniMovie — Flee, Jonas Poher Rasmussen; Denmark, France, Sweden, Norway (Final Cut For Real, Sun Creature Studio, Vivement Lundi, MostFilms, Mer Film, ARTE France, VPRO – Television)
The film tells the story of Amin Nawabi, who struggles with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years that threatens to unravel the life he has built for himself and his future husband. He tells director Jonas Poher Rasmussen for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan, presented mainly in animated form.
Jury statement: The ITFS Festival gave us — the jury — quite a challenge. Various films, each with its own unique and beautiful characteristics, were put before us. Some films were driven by deep humanitarian content and cruel displacement of families living under the unbearable rule of authoritarian leaders. Some featured colorfully vivid journeys where friendships were forged and heroes were born. Some were a mixture of the above.
We are in 2022, emerging from a global pandemic. And yet the world has become an even more dangerous and unpredictable place. What have we truly learned? We know that repression by dictatorial authorities has an unacceptable impact on people’s lives on a daily basis. From not being able to speak up, to how we interact with those around us — even our own family and loved ones. The fact is, this authoritarianism exists, it is all around us, and it affects us. Repression underlines the visual language of this film. Its hybrid documentary and animation style is visually artistic and moving. It touched us all so profoundly.
Special Mention — My Sunny Maad, Michaela Pavlátová; France, Czech Republic, Slovakia (Negativ Film Production, BFILM, Sacrebleu Productions)
When Herra, a young Czech woman, falls in love with Nazir, an Afghan, she has no idea what kind of life awaits her in post-Taliban Afghanistan in 2011. In the family she integrates into, there is the liberal grandfather, the highly intelligent adopted son Maad and the sister-in-law Freshta, who would do anything to escape her husband’s violent grip.
Jury Statement: First we would like to draw attention to the position of women in a patriarchal society, not east, west but globally. In her film, director Michaela Pavlátová highlights not only the harsh clash between the European and Afghan cultures, but also the warm relationship between the more progressive patriarch of the Kabul family and the young European wife of his son. The character of the little adopted son was strongly developed, drawn and placed in a picturesque cinematographic setting. The little boy was, for us, the real hero of the film.
Jury: Jan-Dirk Bouw (Amsterdam), Romy Roolf (Halle/Saale), Mark Shapiro (Portland)
Pig
Trickstar Nature Award — Pig, Jorn Leeuwerink, The Netherlands (Studio Pupil – Tünde Vollenbroek)
A group of animals connect a power grid to the socket-shaped snout of a large, sleeping pig. At first, the animals use the pig’s energy for simple things, but soon they become dependent on a city where everything is automated. How long can this go on?
Jury statement: The film shows the immeasurable audacity of human incorrigibility, in all its facets, in an entertaining and cheeky way; the short movie weaves together everyday stories about an electric blanket, a kettle, or a smoothie blender, revealing a paradoxical, exploitative, selfish system. The film gets to the point.
FANtastic Award — The Soloists; Celeste Jamneck, Feben Elias Woldehawariat, Mehrnaz Abdollahina, Razahk Issaka, Yi Liu; France (Gobelins)
In a village with ridiculous rules, two old ladies and their forbidden dog have lost their sister, which is why they now need a replacement singer for their next show.
Jury statement: We have never been so united in the FANtastic jury as this year — because we all liked one film in particular. Produced by an international team and in view of the political developments worldwide, this year’s award-winning film convinced us above all with its exuberant creativity full of pop-cultural references and simultaneous return to the traditions of animated film. Filling such a serious and depressing topic as systematic gender injustice with humor is a special art — which is why we are awarding Mehrnaz Abdollahinia, Razahk Issaka, Celeste Jamneck, Yi Liu and Feben Elias Woldehawariat with the FANtastic Award 2022 for their film The Soloists. Welcome to the animation family!
Special Mention — The Seine’s Tears
Jury statement: We give our Special Mention for a film that has inspired us in a unique way. As we all know, democracy is fragile and not available everywhere or to everyone — this is what Les Larmes de la Seine by Yanis Belaid, Eliott Benard, Alice Letailleur, Nicolas Mayeur, Etienne Moulin, Hadrien Pinot, Philippine Singer and Lisa Vicente clearly shows us. With a coherent overall concept, impressive music, sophisticated technique and convincing metaphors, this film makes the massacre of Algerian immigrants in Paris 1961 visible without being moralizing.
Jury: Folke Damminger, Jürgen Frick, Sebastian Heck, Dorothea Kaufmann, Michaela Rehm, Karen Schmitt, Sven Schoengarth, Sabine Willmann
Crazy Horse Session – 48H Animation Jam — Bath; Shantanu Karkare, Siddhi Vartak; India
The Most Boring Granny in the Whole World
Tricks for Kids Award Winners
Award for the best children’s animated film — The Most Boring Granny in the Whole World, Damaris Zielke, Germany (Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg)
Greta has the most boring grandma in the whole world. When she falls asleep on the sofa, Greta gets the idea, to play funeral with her grandma. This confronts them with some questions they didn’t ask themselves before. Because what remains when you have to leave life behind?
Statement of the children’s jury: The film convinced us by explaining the serious topic of death in a humorous way. We could easily understand the granddaughter’s thoughts. Younger children can access the subject matter that way. We think that it is a film suitable for all ages. The animation is so detailed and the perspective of the images so fascinating that we felt as if we had slipped under the covers, too. We also noticed a good mood in the audience. The film leaves us thoughtful, but not sad, with the following idea: If there are no beautiful memories, then we should make some.
Special Mention — Mum Is Pouring Rain, Hugo De Faucompret, France (Dandelooo, Laïdak Films)
This Christmas special relates the story of Jane, a tenacious eight-year old, who thinks she will spend the holidays with her mom, but to her surprise is sent to her grandma’s in the countryside instead. Against all odds, Jane’s holidays turn out to be a real adventure: She meets Cloclo, a gigantic bum with equal talent for jokes and music.
Statement of the children’s jury: The film has touched us all very much. The topic of depression is very relevant for many people. That’s why we think it is important that films deal with the disease and educate people about it. The portrayal of depression seemed very credible to us. We think that younger children should also be introduced to the topic. The film made this possible in a beautiful way.
This year, Giuseppe, the little hedgehog, doesn’t want to hibernate because his greatest wish is to see snow for once in his life. In search of the snow that is not coming this year, Giuseppe will have a great adventure and make new friends.
