The project is a pioneer in using blockchain technology to involve viewers in storytelling and ownership, charting a course for the evolution of entertainment in the Web3 era.

  • Animator Tom Bancroft Teams with TIYA for MerMay Art Challenge

Animator Tom Bancroft Teams with TIYA for MerMay Art Challenge

TIYA, a social networking app for online communities backed by NASDAQ-listed company LIZHI Inc., has announced a new collaboration with Tom Bancroft Studios’ month-long global MerMay Art Challenge.

MerMay, a yearly drawing prompt event with millions of artists and viewers joining in the fun, was created by former Disney animator Tom Bancroft (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan) and has found worldwide popularity and success since starting in 2016. The art challenge encourages artists and art enthusiasts to draw a new mermaid-inspired sketch every day for the month of May, using official MerMay sketch prompts.

In line with the event’s spirit of exploration and imagination, TIYA aims to reinvent social networking norms and reimagine how communities and interest groups interact. Partnering with ANiLEAGUE (an ACG artists alliance) as one of MerMay’s sponsors, TIYA is participating in various MerMay promotions and campaigns, including sponsoring MerMay’s May 10 official prompt and hashtag: #Vibe.

Since making its debut in the U.S. in 2020, TIYA has emerged as an immensely popular real-time interactive chat app among young American users, and has been downloaded nearly 20 million times worldwide. TIYA’s ‘live’ social networking features enable its user community and new TIYA users to engage with the MerMay challenge in a unique and interactive way.

On top of working with Tom Bancroft Studios and ANiLEAGUE for MerMay, TIYA is also using its own drawing prompts and releasing its own set of 31 artworks for each day in May, showcasing male and female mermaids in various themes and representing different cultures.

“We are very excited to join in on the MerMay fun and introduce new and exciting ways to bond with friends and connect with communities through TIYA,” shared TIYA CEO James Lin.

TIYA aims to accelerate its brand and platform growth in the U.S. through events and activities like MerMay, which spur higher user engagement and interaction. The latest version of the audio-based social app, which has been available globally from the first quarter of 2022, includes a revamp of the TIYA user interface.

With key app features that enable ‘live’ social networking, TIYA offers users a welcoming digital space for real-time relaxed and candid conversations through audio-based chat and additional features. The newly redesigned user interface creates a space that emulates TIYA’s contemporary vision of ‘design with purpose’.

MerMay was created by accident when Bancroft drew two teen mermaids chatting with their “shell phones” in hand while lounging on rocks in the ocean. The sketch went viral on Facebook, which gave Bancroft the idea to work on a month of mermaid-themed sketches and call it “MerMay,” because the sketch took off ahead of the month of May. Bancroft invited his social media following to join in and the drawing prompt immediately surged in popularity across the web.

Since then, MerMay has run each year during the month of May. Now in its sixth year, the illustrations and animations created for the official MerMay 2022 art contest will be judged by a panel of well-respected artists, including Bancroft himself, Raya and the Last Dragon co-director John Ripa,  artist/toy designer Whitney Pollett and Disney Legend Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

  • Shawn Amos Book ‘Cookies & Milk’ Gets Animated Series from Disney, Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy and Jesse James Films

Cookies & Milk, an original animated series based on the forthcoming middle grade novel of the same name, is in development at Disney Television Animation. The debut novel is semi-autobiographical, inspired by the childhood of author and Blues musician Shawn Amos, the son of  Wallace “Wally” Amos, Jr. — iconic founder of the Famous Amos chocolate chip cookie brand.

The project is being executive produced by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions (ABC’s black-ish, Disney Channel’s upcoming Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur), Jesse Murphy and James Sears Bryant of Jesse James Films, and Shawn Amos. Brian Egeston (The Game, upcoming film On a Wing and a Prayer) is co-executive producer and story editor.

“It’s an absolute coup to bring Shawn Amos’s heartfelt, humorous book to Disney television screens and, with the guiding vision, credibility and track record of our Cinema Gypsy and Jesse James Films creative team, we’re looking forward to telling this authentic and relatable story about belonging, self-acceptance and forgiveness,” said Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis.

Cinema Gypsy’s Fishburne and Sugland commented, “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Shawn Amos, Ayo Davis and the talented team at Disney Branded Television. Shawn’s semi-autobiographical novel, Cookies & Milk, is partially based on his own experiences growing up as the son of Wally ‘Famous’ Amos. This humorous and heartwarming exploration of summer fun and friendship seen through the eyes of a young black boy being raised by his divorced father is full of joy, self-discovery and a whole lot of unconditional love.”

The Cookies & Milk teleplay follows the summer adventures of harmonica-playing middle-schooler Ellis Johnson as he begrudgingly helps his wildly optimistic and quite possibly magical father open the world’s first cookie shop in 1970s Hollywood, California.

Jesse James Films recently acquired the rights to the book, which received a six-figure advance in a two-book deal from the publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Cookies & Milk is set to be published in Spring 2022.

In a joint statement, Jesse James Films’ Murphy and Bryant said, “We are so excited to have found the right home for this show with Disney Television Animation, Laurence and Helen. Shawn has created such a beautiful reimagining of his childhood in a narrative that we hope will universally connect with audiences on and off the page.”

“What a dream to see this Black kid from Hollywood become a Disney character,” said author Amos. “I wrote Cookies & Milk for my son to help him understand his family, his culture and himself. I hope kids of all colors will see something of their own selves in Ellis. I’m so grateful to Helen, Jesse, and Laurence for championing my story. I know it’s in good hands with them and the deeply creative folks at Disney.”

This series greenlight marks the second animated project at Disney for Cinema Gypsy which has a first look deal with ABC Signature and is in production on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur for Disney Channel.

Laurence Fishburne and Cinema Gypsy Productions are represented by CAA, Landmark Artists Management, and attorneys Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein Lezcano Bobb & Dang. Global Screen Nets ‘The Last Whale Singer,’ Pre-Sales Open in Cannes

Global Screen, a TELEPOOL brand, has acquired the animated family feature film The Last Whale Singer for global distribution. Available for the first time for pre-sale in Cannes at the Marché du Film, the epic, emotional family  adventure is written and directed by Reza Memari, creator of the international success Richard the Stork

“This is an intricately layered film, which reveals the never-before-seen and fascinating world of the whales,” commented Alice Buqoy,  SVP, International Sales & Acquisitions at Global Screen. “It’s a beautifully created piece with stunning animation, an uplifting score and an entertaining narrative bringing the mesmerizing underwater realms to life. The story is life-affirming and touching with a call to action to both young and old, which simply cannot be ignored.”

One of the first animated feature films created with Unreal Engine 5, The Last Whale Singer is set in a dazzling underwater world full of witty, multi-layered characters with wide appeal to all ages.

Produced by Maite Woköck (My Fairy Troublemaker), the characters are based on designs by Uwe Heidschötter, known for films such as Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning Revolting Rhymes; Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning Missing Link and the Annie Award-nominated Zog.

“This is the story of a young humpback whale who, after the sudden loss of his parents, is confronted with a seemingly impossible task; to discover the song that will save the oceans from destruction,” said Memari,  co-CEO of Telescope Animation. “It’s a story about radical vulnerability and the power of one voice, courageously singing through fear, to inspire others. The Last Whale Singer also carries another vital message which is close to my heart — the urgent need to respect and protect the natural world.”

Woköck, co-CEO at Telescope Animation, added, “When Reza Memari first told me about his idea for The Last Whale Singer, I was immediately on board. Since then, this whale’s incredible journey has grown into a vast, interwoven story universe across multiple media platforms. As a producer it’s a pure joy to be working on a project of such narrative abundance and great potential for international distribution.”

    Synopsis:

Vincent, a rebellious teenage whale, must venture to the deepest sea and summon his mystical song to save the oceans from the monstrous Leviathan. Vincent is the son of the last Whale Singer, Humphrey, whose mystical song is essential for the oceans’ survival.

When the evil creature breaks free from a melting iceberg and kills Humphrey, Vincent is the only one who can stop the creature from annihilating all marine life by finding his own voice and song. But doubting his ability, and incapable of accepting his father’s death, Vincent undertakes a dangerous journey to bring Humphrey back from the mythical ‘Star Pool’ so that he can defeat the Leviathan.

With the help of his friends, the finnicky, devoted suckerfish Walter, and Darya, a rambunctious, deaf orca girl, Vincent must embrace his destiny and take his rightful place in the lineage of Whale Singers.

  • ITFS Announces 2022 Trickstar Award Winners

ITFS Announces 2022 Trickstar Award Winners

The first awards show of the 29th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film took place on Wednesday, May 4. Moderator Anja Lange hosted the evening, welcoming numerous guests to the stage to honor this year’s Trickstar Professional Awards winners.

    German Animation Screenplay Award

This year, two screenplay prizes were awarded: The award for the best screenplay, endowed with  €2,500 and donated by the Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart (AMCRS), and the award for the screenplay with the greatest international market potential in the amount of €1,500 , donated by Pink Parrot Media (Montreal/Madrid).

These awards aim to promote promising authors, contribute to the improvement of the quality of the material and the international market potential of animated feature films, as well as to highlight the importance of professional scriptwriting and, consequently, more attractive films.

The jury consisted of Peter Keydel (Producer, Mago Production), Holger Weiss (Founder & CEO of M.A.R.K.13 Group), Silke Wilfinger (Founder of SilkWayFilms), Emely Christians (Producer & CEO of Ulysses Filmproduktion) and Tania Pinto de Cunha (President / Director Int’l Sales & Aquisitions, Pink Parrot Media).

    Minus Drei
Book illustration from ‘Minus Drei and the Wild Lucy’ by Ute Krause

The award for the best screenplay goes to: Dino Mite / Minus Drei und die verlorene Stadt (Minus Drei and the Lost City)
Screenplay: Armin Prediger, Andreas Völlinger. Production: Holger Weiss and Dominique Schuchmann, M.A.R.K.13 – COM, Björn Magsig and Sandra Schießl, TRIKK 17.

Jury Statement: “‘Upside Down’ is a popular game — and an exciting premise for a children’s film that surprisingly approaches this question: What if a dinosaur had a pet, an untamed human prehistoric girl? What if the dinosaur is the civilized creature and the human child takes on the role of the ‘wild’ pet? Andreas Völlinger and Armin Prediger have turned this idea into a screenplay for an animated film that is dramaturgically clear, extremely funny and with great dialogue wit. They always have their target group in mind! With an exciting and action-packed plot, but at least as much heart and humor, the screenplay inspires and you can hardly wait to see this story on the big screen, together with lots of children!”

The award for the best screenplay with the greatest international market potential goes to: Little Miss Santa
Screenplay: Jasmina Kallay. Production: Lilian Klages (Dreamin’ Dolphin Film, Munich)

Jury Statement: “I guess we will all agree Christmas is a very special time of the year. And our Little Miss Santa is going to make it even better. This is a charming Christmas story full of love, friendship and understanding of each other’s needs. Unlike other Christmas films we all know and most certainly adore, this one is quite special.”

A Special Mention goes to the screenplays Mr. Wiggles (screenplay: André Heeger) and The (Mostly) Marvelous Murray (screenplay: Christian Kaps).

    Animated Games Award Germany

The Animated Games Award Germany 2022 is awarded to the best and most innovative animation-based computer game from Germany and comes with prize money of €5,000, sponsored by MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden.

    Minute of Islands
    Minute of Islands

The Animated Games Award Germany 2022 goes to: Minute of Islands
Developer: Studio Fizbin GmbH. Publisher: Mixtvision Mediengesellschaft mbH-Württemberg.

Jury Statement: “This year’s Animated Games Award Germany features five very strong submissions. It was not easy for us, the jury, to make a decision, especially because each of the five game nominations fascinates and inspires in a very individual way. But there can only be one winner. Minute of Islands is an independent game with depth in both art design and story. Animations are used sparingly in the hand-drawn graphics, but in a pointed and considered way. They either enliven the 2D graphics or draw the eye to objects that are important to the story or further gameplay. Therefore, we are happy to present Minute of Islands with the Animated Games Award Germany with full conviction.”

A Special Mention goes to Lacuna (developer: DigiTales Interactive, publisher: Assemble Entertainment).

    Trickstar Business Award

  • Pixomondo Crafts Cinematic Worlds for ‘Star Trek’ & ‘Halo’ with KitBash3D

Pixomondo Crafts Cinematic Worlds for ‘Star Trek’ & ‘Halo’ with KitBash3D

Pixomondo’s skilled team of artists across global facilities have crafted cinematic worlds for the most beloved and coveted IP. From Star Trek’s final frontier, to Master Chief’s saga in Halo, Pixomondo has delivered high-end episodic VFX under tight deadlines amidst the ongoing content boom — and to great success.

To lay a solid foundation for asset creation, the team has relied on KitBash3D’s premium model kits, comprising high-quality, customizable 3D assets as the building blocks for show environments. By leveraging KitBash3D assets for real-time virtual production workflows and procedurally-generated environment building, Pixomondo has expedited production workflows, freed artists to focus on more creative tasks and delivered high-caliber artistry.

    Star Trek: Discovery
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S1 – Space Colony

Assembling the Final Frontier for ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

Crafting exotic planets and futuristic sci-fi environments was an essential role for Pixomondo in world-building for the Emmy Award-winning series Star Trek: Discovery. For four seasons, Pixomondo has transported audiences to the final frontier through developing cinematic worlds, under the direction of VFX Supervisor Fausto Tejeda.

“When it comes to a television pipeline, projects have very short deadlines and require quick turnaround on delivery. Tools like KitBash3D have been essential in enabling us to deliver on time and at a high-level of quality,” Tejeda shared.

Pixomondo’s scope of work on Star Trek: Discovery encompassed crafting creatures, spaceships, characters, environments and effects. For Season 2, the team was tasked with recreating an entirely new and futuristic planet from scratch and based solely on concept designs.

    Star Trek: Discovery
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S1 – Space Colony

“We received general guidelines and concept art from the client, and we were able to use KitBash3D assets as the foundation for our environment building. The model kits have an established geometry and look that matched the concept, and we were able to further customize and build upon the assets. It was amazing to use kits from the get-go that worked flawlessly,” said Tejeda.

Similarly, for Season 3, the team developed a futuristic San Francisco to accommodate a timeline jump to 900 years in the future. Tejeda added, “We used KitBash3D’s Utopia kit as the basis of the environment, then further customized the asset and added new textures. We ended up transferring that asset with other vendors on the show, and to this day, it’s still being used not only on Star Trek: Discovery but also on Picard.”

    Star Trek: Discovery
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S2 – San Francisco

For Season 4 of Discovery, Pixomondo began incorporating virtual production workflows and filming sequences on two in-house LED volumes. “Using KitBash3D assets allows us to lay the groundwork and do the blocking within a scene. The assets have been essential for enabling us to rapidly get iterations out in compliance. We’ll quickly kitbash a scene with massive environments, then we’ll get them up on our huge LED volume walls to gauge if the scale and distance are working. It helps us get work in front of the client as fast as possible, which is critical,” noted Tejeda.

“When we have Zoom meetings with clients, we’re also able to do quick demos or show work in Unreal Engine, then change or swap out assets in real time,” the VFX supe continued. “From there, we’ll continue to build upon the assets to reach our final desired look. It’s all about speed nowadays, and having tools like KitBash3D that we can rely on and use confidently in our pipeline is instrumental for our workflow.”

Leveraging KitBash3D assets has saved Pixomondo weeks’ worth of time that would have previously been required to build models, shaders and textures. “Having the assets as a base allowed us to focus more on the beautification of shots, such as lighting, making sure things are in direct position, layout and addressing client notes on which specific buildings need to be enhanced,” Tejeda shared. “We don’t have to worry so much about the grunt work of starting things from scratch; it’s more about making sure a shot looks aesthetically pleasing. That takes a decent amount of time too, so any little shortcut that we can take is always valuable.”

    Star Trek: Discovery
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S1 – Space Colony

“KitBash3D’s assets come prepared for Unreal, Maya, VRay, Arnold — or whichever tool you’re using — so, it’s easy to plug-and-play and very quickly hit the ground running within several hours; whereas, previously, this would have taken days or weeks,” continued Tejeda. “We’re able to take an asset and move it through the entire pipeline, which is really important. Most of the time, although we’re building assets to put up on the LED wall, we’re going to have to reuse those assets again and again in post. For instance, if a client wants to do a wide establishing shot, we render the assets right out of Unreal, so it’s important that our assets are high enough quality for both our Unreal work and post work.”

As for the quality of KitBash3D assets, Tejeda noted, “A lot of times you buy model kits from various websites, download them and realize that they come in a bunch of triangles or geometry that’s not working. You have to spend hours after the fact cleaning something up. With KitBash3D, you know what you’re getting every single time. You know it will be clean and ready to use as soon as you download it. You know you’ll have options to use it as a hero asset or background asset, or with Unreal Engine or Maya. We know that we can rely on KitBash3D every single time.”

“Rather than spending our resources on creating one tiny building in the background that no one will even notice or see, it’s better to spend the time developing a more complex environment, instead of focusing on each individual little asset. So, having something like KitBash3D’s libraries that we know we can rely on to look good is pretty important. It doesn’t matter how much time you spend building an asset, if you don’t have the time to light or place it properly, it still won’t look great. It’s all about knowing how to use your tools to your advantage to make cinematic worlds more beautiful,” concluded Tejeda.

    Halo
    ‘Halo’ ep. 103 – Cityscape

Setting the Stage for ‘Halo’ with Procedurally-Generated Environments

For Master Chief’s battle for mankind against the Covenant alien race in Halo, an epic backdrop of massive 26th-century cityscapes was central to visual storytelling. Under the direction of Head of CG Evgeny (Johny) Berbasov, Pixomondo crafted procedurally-generated environments to set the stage for the pinnacle war and reimagine the in-game universe for television audiences.

“Because the show is based on the popular and well-established game IP, fans know how the world should look and expect it to be represented in a specific way,” Berbasov pointed out. “We were responsible for building upon the concept art and designs in a way that made the fictional and futuristic environments impressive and believable, while also staying true to the lore for fans.”

To expedite production, Pixomondo leveraged KitBash3D model kit libraries as the basis and inspiration for world-building on Halo. “When we received the initial concept art for the series, we realized that there were many similarities between the overall look of the show and the offerings in various KitBash3D asset libraries. We were able to take specific buildings from KitBash3D’s libraries and transform them to align with the unique design of the Halo universe, rather than taking extra time to create models from scratch,” said Berbasov. “This laid the foundation for creating the massive 30-kilometer cityscape, allowing us to present work to the client faster than previously possible. Overall, the quality and customizability of KitBash3D assets enabled us to achieve this.”

    Halo
Halo ep. 102 – Waterfront view

The team used Brutalist as its primary base kit, in addition to Neo Tokyo and Neo Tokyo 2. “When we’re delivering the first version of an environment to a client for review, KitBash3D model kits serve as the initial jumping off point and help save us up to 80% of the time typically required in creating assets. What used to take a week now only takes two days.”

To develop the cityscape environment, Pixomondo used a procedural world-building process to ensure that no two buildings in the series looked identical. The team created a library with multiple variations of floors, bays, roofs and GAFs that were based on the original KitBash3D model kits, but fully customized to align with the look of the Halo universe. Working in Houdini, the team procedurally combined the separate elements together to create the layouts for unique and different buildings. The map of the 30-kilometer cityscape with buildings, streets and water lines was also procedurally generated, with different elements mixed and matched to populate the massive environment.

“Ultimately, it was like multi-level kitbashing — we took the original KitBash3D model kits, disassembled and customized the different elements of each asset, then reassembled the pieces back together to create a complex, high-fidelity, and one-of-a-kind environment for the series,” Berbasov added. “We relied upon KitBash3D as a basis for the building blocks of the environment, allowing us to create faster and free up artist cycles to focus on more creative tasks.”

    Halo
‘Halo’ ep. 106 – Cityscape and mountains

A veteran effects artist, Berbasov has witnessed the evolution of post-production pipelines throughout more than two decades of working in the industry. “Throughout my career, I’ve worked through all of the different VFX and animation departments, so I have an in-depth understanding of how the entire pipeline works and how complex and time-consuming creating assets, shots and environments can be,” he shared. “When I first got started 24 years ago, everything had to be built from scratch. Today, we’re seeing companies like KitBash3D present and popularize an ‘assetized’ mindset — one where assets are no longer being built manually and having accessible, premade, high-quality model kits as a starting point is making life easier for artists and expediting post-production workflows. This is especially critical for fast-paced production environments, like for episodic series.”

Berbasov concluded, “KitBash3D offers extensive libraries with a diverse range of assets that can be tailored to meet the demands or style of any project. The latest kits are also very clean in topology, so we don’t have to spend a lot of time cleaning it up or decoupling pieces. On fast-paced productions that require quick turnaround, we don’t have extra time to build and shade assets. We need to be able to quickly combine elements together, present it to the client, approve the cameras, light it, and deliver it as efficiently as possible. Using KitBash3D assets and working with an ‘assetized’ mindset is critical in this pursuit.”

Four seasons of Star Trek: Discovery are available to stream on Paramount+; a fifth season was ordered in January. New episodes of Halo Season 1 premiere Thursdays on Paramount+; the series has been renewed for a second season.

  • Catch a Ride with Mr. Toad and Tootle Through Disney Parks History with Heritage Auctions

Catch a Ride with Mr. Toad and Tootle Through Disney Parks History with Heritage Auctions

Nearly 700 lots from one of the most significant assemblages of actual park-displayed signs, props, artifacts and more from Disneyland and Disney theme parks around the world will be offered May 21-22 in Heritage Auctions’ Disneyland: The Auction Signature Auction.

The founder of the collection, Scott Rummell, is instantly recognizable (even to those who don’t know his name). He is a renowned voice actor who has lent his voice to everything from Marvel movie trailers to countless commercials and voice overs on networks ranging from CBS to CNN.

Disneyland has been part of Rummell’s life since he was young. His wife, Terry, collected Donald Duck. In 1982, after they were married, his parents gave the young couple annual passes to the park, after which “Disney wasn’t ‘something we did,’” Hummell says. “It became our lifestyle.”

“At one point, we had one room that was our ‘Disney room’ — that was where we had it all displayed,” he explains. “When we moved into the house, we thought it was crazy to have all these posters rolled up in tubes, so we hired people who worked for Disney to redesign the house specifically for the collection. It was really awesome, what they did with certain pieces in mind.

“It became something that was really special. We loved to open up the house. We had events for Children’s Hospital and other organizations. A lot of people who love Disney came to the house. People ask, ‘How can you let the collection go?’ … and it’s a valid question. I feel a little bit like an artist who spends considerable time on a painting and then sells it. You have time and energy invested, but it’s time to share it with other people.”

     Original Autopia Car
    Original Autopia Car

The sale includes a Complete Park-Used Original Autopia Car with Original Body, Chassis and Tires (c. 1967) – “the first car I ever drove,” Scott says. Used at Disneyland and acquired directly from the park, it is believed to be the single Autopia vehicle to ever come to auction with all original components present, including the chassis and tires (with the exception of the engine, which was not allowed to be sold for safety reasons).

Collectors also can press the gas in their efforts to land a Park-Used Original Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride Vehicle (c. 1993) from one of the Magic Kingdom’s original opening-day attractions in 1971 through 1998. Modeled after the Disneyland attraction, it had some unique characteristics that set it apart from its West Coast twin, like the vehicle’s back seat, added in 1993. This piece has been professionally restored and repainted with added features like spinning wheels and working headlights. A limited number of these vehicles were made, and of those only a handful ever made it to market.

Among the rarest Disney attraction vehicles, a Park-Used Original Skyway Gondola (c. 1965) is from the Disneyland hallmark that stretched across the park from 1956-94, carrying guests into the skies. In 1965, Disneyland switched from the original round gondolas to rectangular versions that were not as cramped, and could accommodate up to four passengers. Everything on this gondola — the “bucket,” the seats, the rails, the roof, the lights — is original, and what makes it even more impressive is that the lights have been rewired and are fully functional. This vehicle is believed to be one of the rare examples that traveled over both Disneyland and Disney World.

Walt Disney famously loved trains, a passion Rummell shares. The sale includes 37 train-themed lots, from a Park-Used Railroad Train Wheel (c. 1950s) to an LGB Big Thunder Mountain Starter Train Set with Box and Manual (Disney/LGB, c. 2001) to a Park-Used Main Street Train Station Wait Sign (c. 1990s-2010s) to a Pair of Train Photo Binders (c. 1990s-2000s). One lucky bidder will even end up with the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train Engine #3 Bell with Park-Used Stand (c. 1956).

    1956 Ticket Book
    1956 Ticket Book

When entering one of the Disney parks, the first thing guests always did was pick out the day’s ticket book, which included tickets for that day’s rides. The sale includes 17 lots of tickets, including a Complete 1956 Disneyland Ticket Book from the park’s second year.

“It was a glorious moment when you got your ticket book,” Rummell recalls. “You were going to go on this ride, or you were going to do that today. It was a big part of the day. When you have full ticket books, with the admission still attached, it is such a rare piece. These are paper items that were mostly torn apart and exchanged for the experience you were getting that day. It was a huge part of Disney history.

“In fact, these books would still work for entry, if you wanted to tear them off … but you wouldn’t want to do that!”

Signs from the parks are prized by Disney collectors, who will find more than 100 in this auction, including:

    • A Park-Used Pirates of the Caribbean Wait Time Sign (c. 1967-1970s)
    • An Original Club 33 Sign (c. 1967)
    • A Park-Displayed Mickey Mouse Sign (c. 1980s)
    • A Park-Displayed Santa Fe & Disneyland R.R. Grand Canyon Diorama Sign
    • An Alice in Wonderland Park-Displayed Sign (c. 2000s-2010s)
    • A Haunted Mansion Painted Sign (c. 1990s)
    Mickey Mouse Big Fig
    Mickey Mouse Big Fig

Disney fans love the cars and trains and signs and tickets, but what first captures the imagination of young park goers is the lineup of beloved Disney characters. Mickey Mouse appears in 66 lots in the auction, including a Life-Size Park Exclusive Mickey Mouse Big Fig (c. 1990s-2000s), seven lots of posters, a Vintage Mickey Mouse Projector by Keystone with 13 Reels of Film (c. 1930s-1960s), a group of Three Telephones or a group of Three Wristwatches.

    Donald Duck RPM sign
    Donald Duck RPM sign

The event also includes 15 Donald Duck lots, including a Donald Duck Vintage RPM Motor Oil Sign (c. 1940s) and a Club 33 Plush Doll plus Restaurant Menu, Recipe Book & Related Items Group of 14 (c. 1980s-1990s). Or work on your short game with a “How to Putt” Disney Big Fig (c. 1990s) — one of seven lots in the sale featuring Goofy.

Rummell spent years doing voiceover work for Disney, but never was awarded any of the items in his collection; instead, he spent years scouring auctions and even garage sales for additions. He says he and Terry are thrilled to share their collection with another generation of Disney fans, but admitted it will be difficult to say goodbye to some of his favorites, including a Park-Used Original Rocket Jets Vehicle (c. 1967) — just as he shared his love of Disney with his children, he loved seeing his young granddaughter sit in it.

The Rummells shared their passion with their children, first at Disneyland in Anaheim and then on trips to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. For his 60th birthday, the family took Scott to Disneyland Paris. A planned trip to Tokyo Disney was scrapped when the coronavirus pandemic hit, but Scott says part of the proceeds from the auction will go toward a rescheduled family trip.
