Watch: ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Rolls for January 28 Release Date

Prime Video kicks off the holiday season with a special announcement: The Legend of Vox Machina, an upcoming adult animated fantasy-adventure series from Critical Role and Titmouse, will now premiere on January 28, 2022 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Along with the new premiere date, Prime Video released a new clip showcasing the quippy character humor that Critters have come to love, and a new image from the series.

Based on the beloved characters and adventures of Critical Role’s first livestreamed tabletop role-playing game (RPG) campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated fantasy-adventure series for adults that follows Vox Machina, a band of misfits with a fondness for boozing and brawling. In a desperate attempt to pay off their mounting bar tab, these unlikely heroes end up on a quest to save the realm of Exandria from dark magical forces. From a sinister necromancer to a powerful curse, the group confronts a variety of obstacles that not only test their skills, but also the strength of their bond.

(Read all about the new show in the February ’22 issue of Animation Magazine, available soon!)

The Legend of Vox Machina is a production of Amazon Studios, Critical Role, and Titmouse for Prime Video. The series stars Critical Role founders and cast members Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part II), Taliesin Jaffe (Final Fantasy XIV), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Liam O’Brien (Star Wars: The Bad Batch), Matthew Mercer (Overwatch), Marisha Ray (Final Fantasy XV), Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Travis Willingham (Marvel’s Avengers). The Critical Role cast also serves as executive producers, alongside Brandon Auman (Star Wars: Resistance), Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse), Shannon Prynoski (Fairfax) and Ben Kalina (Big Mouth).

Critical Role is a story-driven media company created by a group of voice actors that started out sitting around a table together as friends creating epic stories. In 2019, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a 22-minute animated special based on the characters and adventures of Vox Machina, Critical Role’s original livestreamed tabletop RPG campaign. They met their initial funding goal within minutes, and thanks to Critical Role’s passionate fanbase, the campaign continued to gain traction, raising over $11.3 million and becoming one of the most funded Film & Video projects in Kickstarter history. The fan support allowed Critical Role to expand the special into a 10-episode season. When Amazon Studios picked up the series, it built on that record-breaking support by ordering an additional 14 episodes, bringing the total number of episodes to 24 across two seasons, which will stream exclusively on Prime Video.

‘Encanto’ Arrives on Disney+ Friday, ‘Buck Wild’ Tops January Highlights

Disney+ kicks off holiday festivities this Friday, December 24, when Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto  launches on the streamer. In a new featurette, Lin-Manuel Miranda — who wrote eight original songs for the film — teams up with the voice of Mirabel, Stephanie Beatriz, to share insights about several of the film’s songs, including “Dos Oruguitas” — a Critics’ Choice Awards nominee for best original song.

Miranda, who visited Colombia with directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard in 2018, infused the songs with the rhythms, instrumentation and varied styles of the South American country’s music. “Encanto takes place in rural Colombia,” said Miranda, “and the music that comes out of Colombia is so beautiful.”

In the film, Mirabel often reveals her internal struggles and revelations through song. “There’s something that clicks inside her where she realizes the wheels are in motion for her to chase down her destiny,” said Beatriz. “I like these heroine songs so much. We go on this major journey with the character and suddenly we know her better from the inside.”

The season will also see the new animated prehistoric romp The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, coming to Disney+ on January 28, continuing the hilarious escapades of the sub-zero heroes from the wildly successful global franchise.

Eager for a little independence, the thrill-seeking possum brothers Crash and Eddie set out to find a place of their own, but quickly find themselves trapped beneath the ice in a massive cave inhabited by dinosaurs. They are rescued by the one-eyed, adventure-loving weasel Buck Wild, and together, with the help of some new friends, embark on a mission to save the Lost World from dinosaur domination.

Watch: Cartuna Puts an Anime Twist on Holiday Classic ‘Home Alone’

With so many animated properties getting remade in live action, it’s nice to see a little vice-versa action now and again. The talented artists at award-winning Brooklyn indie toon house Cartuna have delivered just such a gift for animation lovers right on time for Christmas with their new short, Kevin, a.k.a. Home Alone  The Anime.

…It’s his house. He had to defend it.

Running a bit under seven and a half minutes, the 2D piece reimagines the 1990 John Hughes holiday favorite Home Alone as an anime actioner, pitting the young protagonist against the Wet Bandits in battle that elevates the original movie’s slapstick pranks to a bloody flurry of martial arts moves.

Kevin is written by James Belfer, Max Benator and Mike Flavin, produced by James Belfer, Adam Belfer and Benator and co-exec produced by Noah Pardo and Flavin. Bobby Brian Barredo handled the animation direction, supervision lead animation, concept art & design for the short, with help from Edwin David (storyboards, concept art & design), Charles Raymund Mijares (project supervisor, animator & animation checker) and a crew of fewer than 20 animators/artists.

  • Tiny Island Embarks on Metaverse Build with Huawei Cloud

Tiny Island Embarks on Metaverse Build with Huawei Cloud

Singapore’s leading stereoscopic 3D CG animation production company Tiny Island Productions (TIP) has announced its ambitions to build a Metaverse known as the Tiny Island Universe. TIP also announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, Huawei, where TIP will leverage Huawei Cloud’s resources and capabilities to support their Tiny Island Productions Cloud platform and create a uniquely virtual and immersive experience.

With technological and creative strengths from Tiny Island Productions powered by the Huawei Cloud platform, users will be able to immerse themselves in a virtual theme park, the Tiny Island Universe, which will have online malls and various zones where users can explore, socialize and have fun in. The aim of this creation is to inspire users to self-create, develop, and share their content to build their own virtual world.

This theme park has also rapidly attracted potential collaborations and partnerships with companies in China that span across several industries such as gaming, media and retail, as well as other brands that want a presence in the metaverse.

TIP is well equipped for the project, with a wealth of experience in creating animation and immersive content for its own intellectual property as well as for its clients in the media and tourism industry, and in mediums such as tether-free (wireless) interactive virtual reality experiences, augmented reality games, 4D and flying theater rides.

“Years ago, we created a show where the main characters could enter dream worlds. We were already experimenting with a concept similar to the metaverse, where audiences can step into the VR world, regardless of location and interact with each other in amazing imaginary worlds,” says David Kwok, CEO of Tiny Island Productions. “We want to blur the lines between the physical and virtual worlds, where the users’ actions in one world can affect the other.”

    Courtesy Tiny Island Productions

Inspired by movies like The Matrix, Inception, Ready Player One and Summer Wars, TIP’s creative team nonetheless faced technological limitations on their road to the Metaverse, such as internet speed, hardware processing power and cumbersome wired VR hardware that made VR inaccessible for many users. Based on current technologies, it would take many years before consumers can expect visuals and experiences like Ready Player One. This new collaboration with Huawei will enable Tiny Island Productions to create and develop this new experience in a much shorter time frame.

Tiny Island Productions will create a prototype of the Universe during the first phase of its plan, before deploying it in one of the major cities in China and Singapore. Singapore’s 5G infrastructure and highly wired populace render it an optimal testbed to showcase how massive populations of users from different geographical locations can experience all these in high fidelity visuals, powered by Huawei’s powerful cloud computing technology and its high-speed internet telecom network.

Moving forward, the project will eventually tap into Huawei’s AI development platform which will customize unique, personalized experiences for each and every user.

As one of the partners, Huawei Cloud’s gaming platform allows users to enjoy high-performance and visually stunning experiences without needing to purchase expensive hardware. In recent years, it has also introduced a sleek-looking VR headset that is as slim as sunglasses.

“Huawei Cloud is excited to be working with Tiny Island Productions in creating an interactive virtual experience powered by our leading cloud services. We hope to help accelerate the development of a virtual world that can bring endless possibilities”, says Rex Lei, managing director of Huawei Cloud Singapore.

Animators around the Globe Pull Together for ‘Climate Emergency’

While major film, TV and VFX productions have all shifted to remote work models in the last two years, it is still impressive when individual artists reach out across the globe and pull together to create a unique, independent project. Recently, one such short film was released online: Climate Emergency, an “Exquisite Corpse” collaboration showcasing the work of seven different creators.

To create the seven segments, each animator was provided with the final five seconds of the previous contributor’s work and then given two months to deliver their own. The result is a montage of bold scenes which are united by a single common color palette despite their diverse settings and styles.

  • Heritage Shatters ‘Art of Anime’ Auction Record with Vol. II

Heritage Shatters ‘Art of Anime’ Auction Record with Vol. II

Heritage Auctions’ four-day Art of Anime and Everything Cool II Animation Art Signature Auction, which wrapped Monday, realized $2,635,985 to outperform its June predecessor – itself, a multiple record-setter as the world’s first auction highlighting anime. Numerous lots far exceeded their initial estimates in this complete sell-out, which saw nearly 3,800 bidders worldwide compete for historic lots in person, on the phone and at HA.com in the largest Anime Art auction ever held.

“We were thrilled with the success of our June Animation Art auction, which brought $2.1 million, and this sale went well above and beyond that,” said Heritage Auctions Vice President and Director of Animation & Anime Art, Jim Lentz. “Animation art is growing rapidly among serious, reverent collectors, with an urgency that is reflected in the results. It has been enormously gratifying to curate these sales at Heritage Auctions, and all evidence suggests that the upward trend will continue.”

Not surprisingly, the popularity of The Art of Anime and Everything Cool has made it a fixture at Heritage Auctions, which will hold Volume III of its The Art of Anime and Everything Cool Signature Auction from August 12-14 (Consignments are now open.)

The second edition’s success was buoyed by numerous lots from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Several of the auction’s top lots were Miyazaki’s 1988’s masterwork My Neighbor Totoro, among them a production cel featuring the weird and wonderful Catbus, which attained a final price of $40,800.

Not far behind was a production cel setup from My Neighbor Totoro featuring a desperate Satsuki looking to the forest spirit Totoro for help. Like the Catbus, it was a rare offering from this beloved film. This scene, from the 1:18:03 mark is as memorable as any in the film. And any work featuring Totoro is scarce and highly coveted, which explains why bidding was up to $14,000 – well beyond its $10,000 estimate – with more than two weeks left before the live auction. The piece sold Saturday for a breathtaking $38,400.

This event also featured something exceptionally special, undeniably rare and, now, remarkably valuable: an original drawing of Nausicaä, princess of the Valley of the Wind, by the hand of Miyazaki himself. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was his second animated feature after The Castle of Cagliostro, and while it was made before Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli, it is widely considered part of the studio’s canon. This piece, which realized $31,200, is also signed by Miyazaki and dated August 4, 1987.

Akira - Kaneda motorcycle production cel (Tokyo Movie Shinsha)
Akira – Kaneda motorcycle production cel (Tokyo Movie Shinsha)

There were also non-Ghibli stand-outs in this sale, chief among them production cels from 1988’s Akira, the manga-turned-film that remains a classic in any medium. Set in a dystopian future in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster and war, the vast story deals with corruption, rebellion and a struggle for what’s best for society. It also features some pretty amazing scenes of Kaneda astride his iconic red motorcycle in the Katsuhiro Otomo movie, among them a production cel that sold last weekend for $21,000 (pictured) and another that raced to a $20,400 finish.

Another breakout star of the sale was Dragon Ball, which contributed 80 lots to the sale – chief among them this Goku and Shenron publicity cel from 1986, which likewise sold for $20,400. Created from the prominent artwork of the renowned mangaka Akira Toriyama, this dynamic work displays hero Son Goku astride his Flying Nimbus, facing the mighty Shenron holding the four-star Dragon Ball.

The “Everything Cool” part of this sale was just as hot – and often quite heated, as collectors battled over two Frank Frazetta drawings, proving, yet again, that the man who brought fine art to fantasy art remains as coveted as ever. Bidders battled over his original Vampirella illustration from 1991, which fetched $144,000. And from the same year, his graphite rendering of Dejah Thoris, wife of John Carter in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ beloved Barsoom stories, sold for $66,000.

Charles Schulz’s baseball-themed original Peanuts strips proved to be a home run with collectors. An original daily strip dated August 13, 1973, sold for $43,200. And from Feb. 22, 1965, a signed-and-inscribed original daily strip featuring that odd couple Lucy and Schroeder (at his piano, where else?) sold for $31,200.

Thirteen SpongeBob SquarePants lots were snapped up in the sale, led by a SpongeBob First Episode Production Cel with Master Background and Animation Drawing Group of 2 (Nickelodeon, 1999), which brought $15,600 – nearly 21 times its pre-auction estimate.

Also in high demand was Winsor McCay’s Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing Original Art (1914), which drew 22 bids before finishing at $12,600. Gertie the Dinosaur was not technically the first animated film, but it was the first to really capture the attention of film-goers, with Gertie the first animated superstar.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Grinch & Max production cel (MGM)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas – Grinch & Max production cel (MGM)

Nearly two dozen bids poured in for Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas Mt. Crumpit Pan Background Layout Drawing by Maurice Noble (MGM, 1966) before it found a new home at $9,900, nearly doubling its estimate. This large (65- by 19-inch) background is from the opening sequence when the camera starts at the top of Mt. Crumpit and pans down to Whoville and was created by Chuck Jones’ long-time right-hand man. From the same beloved classic came a How The Grinch Stole Christmas Grinch and Max Production Cel Signed by Chuck Jones (MGM, 1966), which prompted 29 bids before it reached $8,400.

One of the most popular shows and the longest-running animated show in TV history, The Simpsons was featured in 52 lots in the sale. Among them were The Simpsons (Tracey Ullman Show) Entire Family Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Fox, 1987), which drew $9,300; “The Telltale Head” Homer, Bart and Townspeople Production Cel Setup (Fox, 1990), which finished at $7,200; and a “Treehouse of Horror V” Key Master Production Cel Setup (20th Century Fox, 1994) that brought $5,280.

    Other top lots included:

    • Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween Town Prototype Model (Walt Disney/Touchstone, 1993): $8,400
    • Grease Opening Credits Animation Signed Production Cels Group of 5 (Fine Art Films/Paramount, 1978): $7,800
    • Captain America Jack Kirby-Inspired Bronze Statue (Marvel/Bowen, 1998): $7,800

Post-Apocalyptic Original ‘FreakAngels’ Hits Crunchyroll in January

Crunchyroll revealed today the premiere date and key visual for FreakAngels, a new Crunchyroll Original anime series based on the hit, post-apocalyptic graphic novel series of the same name. All nine episodes will premiere on January 27 across 200 countries and territories, with subtitles available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian and Arabic.

The series is set in Whitechapel, London’s last surviving neighborhood after a calamity struck the world years before, and follows the “FreakAngels” — a small group of psychic friends — as they protect each other and what’s left of humanity. The key creative cast includes Hiroshi Shimizu (MEGALOBOX, Blue Exorcist, Lupin III) as character designer and Studio Ghibli alum Osamu Masuyama (Made in Abyss) as art director.

Synopsis: Welcome to Whitechapel: last bastion of humanity. Six years ago, the world “ended” in a single, apocalyptic event, trapping Great Britain behind a mysterious dome of purple energy. London’s last neighborhood has persevered thanks to the protection of the “FreakAngels” — a small group of psychically-powered 23-year olds. Their fragile peace becomes threatened, however, when an exiled friend returns, exposing past conspiracies and new conflicts within their fractured, makeshift family. Can Whitechapel survive?

The FreakAngels comic was named one of the 50 Best Non-Superhero Graphic Novels by Rolling Stone, won the Eagle Award for Favorite Web-Based Comic in 2010 and 2012, and was nominated for the British Fantasy Award for Best Comic/Graphic Novel in 2010.

  • Otto’s on the Way in New ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Teaser

Otto’s on the Way in New ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Teaser

Next summer, from the biggest animated franchise in history and global cultural phenomenon, comes the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain in Minions: The Rise of Gru. Today, Illumination celebrates the COVID-stymied sequel’s imminent arrival with a new teaser trailer dubbed “On Our Way.” The movie is slated for July 1, 2022.

Amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans in the 1970s, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto — a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please — deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Minions: The Rise of Gru features a thrilling new cast of stars, including the Vicious 6: Taraji P. Henson as cool and confident leader Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance and Danny Trejo as Stronghold. The film also features Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist; Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, an acupuncturist with mad Kung Fu skills; and Oscar winner Julie Andrews as Gru’s maddeningly self-absorbed mom.

Steered by the franchise’s original creators, the latest movie is produced by Illumination founder & CEO Chris Meledandri and longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud, directed by returning franchise filmmaker Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions), co-directed by Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets films) and features the iconic voice of Pierre Coffin as the Minions — plus a killer ʼ70s soundtrack courtesy of Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff.
