Citing an exceptional level of quality among this year’s competing projects, the jury of the ANIMARKT Stop Motion Forum 2021 has determined that nine out of the 15 selected films will walk away from the Łódź, Poland event with distinctions from the Pitching showdown. Prizes of cash, software and professional consultation will bring heartfelt stories, comedies and socially engaged animations one step closer to the screen.
The award ceremony is one of the final events of the ANIMARKT program, which this year gathered over 300 creators from around the world. The jury, consisting of Bea Bartolome, Alicja Gancarz and Denis Walgenwitz, had quite a task and underwent many hours of debate to select the winners.
“Despite many years of work in this industry, the quality of selected projects this year is new to me,” notes Walgenwitz. “In recent years, in the stop-motion animation industry, we have observed a tendency to have better and better cooperation between producers, directors, teams and technical teams. That is why we have this variety, quality and the ability to tackle many topics and issues, which I think is good news for everyone.”

Gruppo Alcuni (studios.alcuni.it), the Italian animation producer behind Pet Pals, Leo da Vinci and Vlady & Miro, announced the launch of the Cartoon Artist course. The instructional program aims to forge a new generation of professional animators in the country.
“Animation in Italy has always been about creating amazing stories and characters, but then often producing them outside Europe. This just didn’t seem right to me. So, when I found the perfect cultural and educational scenario here in Italy’s Trentino region, I decided to create something absolutely unique and innovative. We’re starting with a small team, but we’ll grow until we can give Italian animation the same quality as a Renaissance Master Craftsman workshop,” said Francesco Manfio, CEO of Gruppo Alcuni.
“When Gruppo Alcuni decided to produce most of its animated content in Italy, such as our Mini Pet Pals series, we felt the need to forge new professionals like character designers, storyboard artists, animators, etc. So, when we found a huge opportunity within the Autonomous Province of Trento, we jumped on board this adventure and created a course that will enable us to train many young professionals for our company. And this also thanks to the support of the Artigianelli School and the Trentino Film Commission.”
The Cartoon Artist course will launch in February 2022, within the Autonomous Province of Trento’s educational and training courses (IFTS), with applications submitted by January 7, and processed between January 10-14. The selection will be narrowed down to 14 participants who will study for a full year, with over 1,000 hours in classrooms, labs and internships.
What sets the program apart is the European Qualification Framework Diploma participants will graduate with, considering no similar courses in Italy offer such a certification. It is also an opportunity for artists of any age and education to apply.
Production has begun on the stop-motion animated feature Of Unwanted Things and People, based on Arnošt Goldflam’s successful book of original and unusual fairy tales. Optioned by MAUR Film (Czech Republic) in 2015, the four-part collection of tales is being brought to life by a co-production team of European producers which also includes Artichoke (Slovakia), ZVVIKS (Slovenia) and Vivement Lundi! (France).
The partnership came about thanks to the regular participation of studio heads Martin Vandas, Juraj Krasnohorsky, Jean-François Le Corre and Kolja Saksida at the CEE Animation Forum as organizers, workshop instructors and attendees. After developing relationships and sharing industry knowledge over the years, the partners have established full parity in their collaboration: All four companies have equal shares in the co-production, rights and distribution territories.
Of Unwanted Things and People speaks to the tragedies and resilience of life: The story opens up the painful topic of mortality, but also shows how spending time together, sharing stories and empathy help one overcome the most difficult moments. The anthology film will approach these moments with kindness, understanding and gentle humor as it highlights the power of storytelling — especially as it benefits children.
Of Unwanted Things and People
The project was set for stop-motion puppet animation from its inception, aiming for artistic stylization that is still accessible to young viewers. Each producer has extensive experience in this technique: Vandas (MAUR) produced the award-winning short Daughter (2019), which won a Student Academy Award 2019 and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Le Corre (Vivement Lundi!) was also nominated for the Oscar with Memorable (2019).
The producers have rich experience with feature films as well, including Flee (Vivement Lundi!, 2021), nominated for three European Film Awards and winner of the Annecy Cristal and Animation Is Film Grand Prix; The Crossing (MAUR, 2021), which received a Special Mention at Annecy and Audience Award at Animation Is Film; and White Plastic Sky (Artichoke, 2022), supported by Eurimages.
Slovenia’s ZVVIKS worked on the award-winning puppet animated short Farewell (2016) and produced the successful stop-motion children’s series Koyaa (2011-2019). Of Unwanted Things and People will be the first stop-motion feature in the history of Slovenian animation.
Of Unwanted Things and People
Of Unwanted Things and People unfurls as siblings Tom (age four), Suzan (eight) and Derek (10) spend the weekend at their grandfather’s house for the first time since their grandmother died. The kids miss their Grandma, especially when evening comes and there’s no one to tell a bedtime story. Grandpa, who is a writer, is not in the mood for stories. With the loss of his love, he has also lost his muse. Suzan decides to take over: She takes Grandma’s big sombrero and uses her imagination to transport everyone to a world of magic. With each story, each family member learns to accept that Grandma is gone forever. Or is she really?
The 75-minute movie is split into four pieces. The frame of the film, “The Matchbox” (working title), is produced in France, directed by Jean-Claude Rozec (Specky Four-Eyes) from a script by Blandine Jet. The first bedtime story, “The Orphans” (WT), about children who are rescued by heroic cats, is produced in the Czech Republic and directed by David Súkup, who adapted the Goldflam tale with Marek Král and Petr Krajíček. Story two, “The Old Apple Cores” (WT), switches to wild animals chasing little boys through an abandoned orchard and is co-directed by Patrik Pašš and Martin Smatana (The Kite), adapted by Pašš and produced in Slovakia. The third story is “Yesterday’s Newspaper” (WT), about a lonely grandfather who learns to fly, directed by Leon Vidmar (Farewell), adapted by writers Kaja Balog and Maja Križnik.
“Yesterday’s Newspaper” began production in Slovenia at the end of November and is planned for 135 days of shooting with 20 days of blocking done simultaneously on two sets, alongside post-production. Aardman alum Julia Peguet is the lead animator for ZVVIKS on the project, and Patricia Ortiz Martinez is art director.
The film has received support from Creative Europe MEDIA as well as regional and national film funds in all production countries. Two broadcasters (Czech Television, RTV Slovenia) are already involved, cinema distributors are confirmed (Level K – Tine Klint) and a French distributor has made a first offer. The project won the CEE Animation Forum 2018 and was pitched at Cartoon Movie 2019, where it received the Eurimages Co-production Development Award.
Of Unwanted Things and People is expected to premiere in 2024.
Freeform has ordered the half-hour animated comedy seriesPraise Petey (working title) from creator, writer and executive producer Anna Drezen (head writer, Saturday Night Live) and executive producer Monica Padrick (Central Park), along with Bandera Entertainment’s Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and Dustin Davis, and ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico. The series is produced by Disney Television Studios’ 20th Television Animation, with animation by ShadowMachine.
Praise Petey follows Petey, a New York City “it” girl who has it all until her life comes crashing down around her. As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her father gives her a new lease on life: she’s going to “lean into” modernizing his small-town cult.
“Anna Drezen’s comedic voice and her POV on life and pop culture are perfect for Freeform,” said Jamila Hunter, EVP Programming and Development, Freeform. “Entering the animation space in partnership with prolific creators like Mike, Greg, Anna, Monica and Dustin is like arriving at a party with the coolest kids in town. We can’t wait to share their hilarious show with our audience.”
Drezen added, “I can’t believe I get to make this show with so many funny and smart people. Getting to work with Monica, Bandera, Freeform, ShadowMachine, 20th Television Animation and this amazing cast has been a blast and dream — a bleam. This rules.”
The series stars Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) as Petey, once the girl who had everything, now she has to use her city smarts to revamp her father’s failing cult and be a better leader than he was, a much more laidback one — a nice one — a girl boss! The cast also features:
John Cho (Cowboy Bebop) voices Bandit, a potential love interest for Petey and a cult member since childhood whose mother was a high-ranking member.
Kiersey Clemons (The Flash) voices Eliza, a bartender at the local bar and reluctant BFF to Petey, working at her new cult.
Christine Baranski (The Good Fight) voices White, Petey’s mother. She’s a magazine editor, Manhattan society woman and a terrifying perfectionist who’s never eaten, tasted or seen ketchup.
Amy Hill (Magnum P.I.) voices Mae Mae, Bandit’s Southern mama oozing with Southern hospitality who happens to be the right-hand woman of a cult leader.
Stephen Root (Barry) voices Petey’s loving father, a charming, homespun, stone-cold cult leader with some pretty unique ideas about meditation, space, jumping up and down in a field, and how his bloodline is necessary for the salvation of mankind. He may or may not be dead.
Praise Petey will begin production in early 2022.
Drezen is represented by WME, Artists First and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Walt Disney Animation Studios today previewed and alien landscape awaiting audiences in its upcoming original feature in a piece of concept art for Strange World. From Oscar-winning director Don Hall (Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon), co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer, Raya and the Last Dragon) and producer Roy Conli (Big Hero 6, Tangled), the action-adventure will arrive November 23, 2022.
Strange World takes viewers on a journey deep into an uncharted and treacherous land, where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades — a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest, and by far most crucial, mission.
Hall notes that the film is a nod to pulp magazines of the early 20th century — popular fiction so named because it was printed on inexpensive wood pulp paper: “I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up,” he said. “They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for Strange World.”

Following the debut of its titular demon stars (voiced by Keegan Michael Key and movie co-writer Jordan Peele) in the first teaser just before Halloween, Netflix fed another first-look at writer/director Henry Selick’s upcoming animated feature Wendell & Wild today via Twitter. The clip briefly introduces us to Kat, the punk-rock, demon-slaying teen hot on the hellish brothers’ tails.
Keep an eye out for Kat, the teen protagonist in WENDELL & WILD—Henry Selick’s new animated film, co-written by Selick and Jordan Peele.
Wendell & Wild is a stop-motion feature film about two demon brothers who escape the Underworld and find themselves in a town where they must evade a demon-duster teenager, Kat, who is trying to destroy them.
Peele (Key & Peele, Get Out) is also producing through his Monkeypaw company along with Selick and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein from the Gotham Group. Sarah Serata will co-produce. Executive producers are Win Rosenfeld for Monkeypaw, Peter Principato and Joel Zadak for Principato-Young, Lindsay Williams and Eddie Gamarra for The Gotham Group. Argentinian artist Pablo Lobato will design the characters.
Coming to Netflix in 2022, Wendell & Wild will mark Selick’s return as an animated feature director in the (appropriately for his macabre sensibilities) 13 years since he wrote, directed and produced Coraline for LAIKA. The helmer is also known for other stop-motion classics The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and hybrid movie Monkeybone. More recently, Selick has been tapped by the Russo Brothers to direct the pilot for the upcoming TV adaptation of horror video game Little Nightmares.
Anime fans are voicing their dismay with Toei Animation and support for YouTuberTotally Not Mark, who has over 600,000 subscribers, as his story of having more than 150 videos on his channel flagged and removed for copyright infringement spread across the online community. The digital content creator released a video response on Tuesday, in which he claims that any appearance of Toei properties such as Dragon Ball and One Piece in these videos fall within fair use — and that nine of the videos removed were drawing clips without any footage from the studio.
Totally Not Mark points out that YouTube’s process to appeal copyright claims can take months per video, meaning that it would take a cumulative 37 years of effort to get all of his purged content reinstated on the platform, while losing out on ad revenue and opportunities to build viewership. In his response, he calls on fellow fans and creators to boycott Toei titles, in particular the highly anticipated Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, in solidarity.
“Toei has effectively told us that they have a gun to the head of every single person covering their material and, if they so choose, regardless of their content, they can pull the trigger whenever they want, without repercussions,” TNM avers, adding a pointed note to YouTube that instead of removing the Dislike button, the platform should help its creators by overhauling the “outrageously slow and corrupt” appeal process “that these companies are consistently, openly and willfully taking advantage of.”

Deep Fake | Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis
Deep Fake by Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis (France) is the story of a fictitious virtual world, or metaverse. During the residency, Chandoutis will begin a series of tests to define the aesthetic outline of the film’s virtual universe – an online 3D environment where the film’s characters in the form of avatars interact as if in real life. The sets evolve according to the storytelling, navigating between two poles: one focused on hyperrealism, the other focused on a more abstract representation, which embodies the character’s inner reality. For these tests he will use 3D scanning tools, real-time video game engines, video texturing (CEF3D) and Gan algorithms.
Dino Doom on Desert Planet | Zsuzsanna Kreif and Balázs Turai
Dino Doom on Desert Planet by Zsuzsanna Kreif and Balázs Turai (Hungary) is an unlikely love story between a humanoid slave, Azaz, and a young meteor, NIKU-278. Like any proper science fiction work, it is a re-interpretation and prognosis of the current global, historical environment. The ecological crisis, mass migration, terrorism, bi-polar political power-plays, free speech and propaganda, class struggles and lastly, the possibility of love and humanity in a time of crisis – all these phenomena serve as the basis of the story’s creation. During the residency, Kreif and Turai will start storyboarding the film while further developing the visual style. The film will have three different settings: space, the “Urth” and the dreamworld. Also, research and experiments with colors, outlines and textures will be explored.
Emilio Ramos
Hanta by Emilio Ramos (Mexico) is the story about freedom seekers. It is also the story about those who are silenced, imprisoned and killed. The project has two general aims: the editorial and visual development. Both need to be advanced simultaneously. The scriptwriting needs to be grounded in the storyboard, to visually see the whole story in order to optimize it – to eliminate the inessential, and also accentuate and attenuate elements of the subplots. The main aim will be to produce a first animatic cut of the film, with as much input as possible from the visual development, sound and music references. The main aim for the visual development is to work on an overall visual concept of the film. To establish the guidelines and foundations of the film and each character, setting and prop, by creating collage mood boards

The creator of Netflix’s acclaimed animated dark comedy BoJack Horseman, Raphael Bob-Waksberg took to Twitter this week to weigh in on the streamer’s controversial Dave Chappelle special The Closer, in which the comedian (once again) punches down at the LGBT+ community and transgender people in particular.
Still mystified that apparently Dave Chapelle’s deal is that he says whatever he wants and Netflix just has to air it, unedited. Is that normal, for comedians? Because Netflix once asked me to change a joke because they were worried it might upset David Fincher.
“Still mystified that apparently Dave Chapelle’s deal is that he says whatever he wants and Netflix just has to air it, unedited,” Bob-Waksberg tweeted Tuesday morning. “Is that normal for comedians? Because Netflix once asked me to change a joke because they were worried it might upset David Fincher.”
Fincher has created a number of hits for the streamer, including last year’s most-Oscar-nominated feature film Mank, drama series House of Cards and executive produces the Creative Arts Emmy and Annie Award-winning animated anthology Love, Death + Robots.
Bob-Waksberg later uncovered the scrapped joke, which turned out to be a full scene, and followed up by offering to share the never-aired material if at least 100 people donated to Trans Lifeline (https://translifeline.org/) — a grassroots hotline and microgrants non-profit offering direct emotional and financial support to trans in crisis.
“Netflix was right to note, it’s a dumb scene. My point was it’s silly for a network to pretend their hands are tied when it comes to the content they put on their network,” he clarified. The call to action met his goal in a matter of hours, with Bob-Waksberg noting, “I don’t know if this scene is worth it, but you gave over $2,000 to Trans Lifeline today and that’s definitely worth it.”
Yay! THANK YOU! I don’t know if this scene is worth it, but you gave over $2000 to Trans Lifeline today and that’s definitely worth it. pic.twitter.com/i6ztDYxP3C
Bob-Waksberg is a two-time Primetime Emmy-nominated writer and producer, creator of BoJack Horseman (Netflix) and Undone, with Kate Purdy (Amazon Studios), and executive producer of Lisa Hanawalt’s Tuca & Bertie, recently renewed for a third season on Adult Swim.

Kicking off its sixth edition this week, ANIMARKT Stop Motion Forum is one of the predominant events in the stop-motion animation industry. Offering filmmakers the opportunity to establish industry contacts and present their portfolios in front of masters from renowned film studios, the Forum runs for five days of compelling masterclasses and opportunities for new stars of the medium to rise in Lodz, Poland.
“Participants of ANIMARKT Stop Motion Forum are the representatives of many countries – Spain, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Croatia, Portugal or Argentina. It is really amazing that animation can connect people, artists all over the world whose center will be, for at least five days, in Lodz,” said Agnieszka Kowalewska-Skowron from MOMAKIN, which organizes the event.
This year’s ANIMARKT takes on a hybrid form: Workshops, consultations and a program open to the general public, ANIMARKT After Hours, will be held on site. However, for those who cannot travel to Lodz, the organizers have also prepared many online events.
“We thought about the form of this year’s Forum for a long time. However, due to the pandemic situation, we decided that ANIMARKT will take place in a hybrid form,” explained MOMAKIN’s Paulina Zacharek, co-creator of the Forum. “Last year’s experience in organizing the Forum online convinced us that our presence on the Internet is a great help for participants who would not be able to afford to come from the other side of the world. Using a special internet platform, they will be able to connect with us and take part in the event.”
The ANIMARKT program consists of three main sections: MASTERS, PITCHING and BUSINESS.

Included among the MASTERS sessions are valuable masterclasses. One of them will be hosted by Jim Capabianco and Kat Alioshin, creators of the feature-length film The Inventor, about the life of Leonardo da Vinci. Capobianco is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter who worked with Walt Disney Animation Studio on The Lion King and then with Pixar Animation Studios, where he contributed to blockbuster movies such as Ratatouille, Toy Story 2 or Finding Nemo. Alioshin, on the other hand, worked as a member of the film crew on The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.
“Can you make it work? A discussion of a practical approach to modeling and lighting for a stop motion production” will be a masterclass with Adam Jones – a collaborator on the stop-motion features Coraline and Kubo and Two Strings – and with Susanna Jerger, who was responsible for the miniature sets for Wes Anderson’s latest film, The French Dispatch. They are both working on Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is due out in 2022.
The character animation workshop will be conducted by Marcos Valin, who works mainly on full-length films, collaborating with Tim Burton, Wes Anderson and Travis Knight. Another workshop – for young creators who want to learn how to effectively search for a producer for their projects, is prepared by Zofia Jaroszuk, who works for the award-winning Animoon studio as a producer and production manager. A panel discussion will also be devoted to this topic. The cooperation between the creator and producer will be discussed by Gábor Osváth (member of the European Film Academy, founder of Filmfabriq and Boddah studios) and Jean-François Le Corre (producer of Memorable, founder of Vivement Lundi! studio).
The BUSINESS section enables networking meetings with the participation of the top industry decision-makers. It is within this segment that Talents’ Fair – a new item in the ANIMARKT agenda – will be held. The portfolio review will introduce young filmmakers to the employee selection system in film studios. The talks will be led by Becky Perryman from Strange Beast (co-created The Headspace Guide to Sleep and Headspace Guide to Meditation with Netflix), Erika Forzy from Passion Animation (creators of the Gorillaz avatars) and Dorien Schetz from Beast Animation (responsible for the production of award-winning short films such as Oh Willy … and the medium-length This Magnificent Cake!).
The ANIMARKT program also includes “Ask the Expert” and presentations of full-length films and series in “Show me your project” or the block “Meet your partner” – this year focused on the dialogue between Chilean representatives and European producers.
