Euro Toon News: Dandelooo & Xilam’s Cartoon Forum Titles, YACF Backs Animation Trio

Emmy Award-winning French animation production and distribution company Dandelooo will be unveiling two new original animated TV projects to potential industry partners at this year’s Cartoon Forum in Toulouse (September 20-23). Studio co-Founder Emmanuèle Pétry Sirvin commented: “I fell in love with Space Ham at Cartoon Springboard. This project is the best example of a great ‘creator driven’ comedy series I can think of that’s come about in the past few years! It’s Your Body! aims to help children understand their own body reactions and the emotions linked to these reactions in a fun way and we will not avoid all the ‘yucky’ stuff too! Even parents will be surprised as well!”

    • It’s Your Body! (39 x 7′, Kids 6-11) Directed by Yulia Aronova and Eloïc Gimenez and produced by Dandelooo, the 2D edutainment comedy series explains the physiological phenomena of the human body to children in a fun way, sometimes in relation to emotions, but always from the point of view of … animals! Every day, while the owners of the house are absent, Louise the robin, Cameron the cat and twin fleas Jazz and Anna gather to watch their favorite TV series “Passions of the Heart”. Their goal: to understand the strange reactions of humans through the things they see on television! Rosa the chameleon will give them the scientific answer.

    • Space Ham (52 x 9′, Preschool) Directed by Nicolai Viewerth, the 2D and 3D comedy series is a co-production with MiniCosmos (Denmark). Do you remember back in the day when you had sleepovers with your best friend? Imagine if that was every day … and in space! Two pigs – Tim, a ‘thinker’ who likes to have his life in order, and Carl, a ‘doer’ who doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions – guard a space station on an asteroid far, far away. They are best friends, skilled in their hobbies, but aimless at handling their trusted positions as their “trying to be an adult” causes chaos rather than safety.

Academy Award-nominated French animation studio Xilam Animation is set to bring two brand-new projects to Cartoon Forum. Both dynamic projects are CGI animation, strengthening Xilam’s commitment in that space. Founder & CEO Marc du Pontavice said: “We are continuing to grow and diversify our slate with new vibrant CGI projects following our successful foray into the format. Piggy Builders and Wild Life City are perfect additions to our production slate, revealing innovative talents, encompassing Xilam’s style and ideals in a unique way, with new loveable characters and fun adventures for both the preschool and 6-11 demographic. We are very much looking forwarding to debuting the series and introducing them to the global marketplace at Cartoon Forum.”

    • Piggy Builders (52 x 11′, Preschool) Created by Marie Manand, Julien Hazebroucq and Emmanuelle Leleu. Ever wondered what happened to the three little pigs after their well-known misadventure with the wolf? They realized that building houses together, as a team, is what they enjoy the most. Cesar, Charlie and Cornelia are now known throughout the forest as the Piggy Builders. Their creations have cozy interiors, clever architecture and eco-friendly materials – an invitation to have fun with playing and building. In order to help their friends and neighbors, they can make the impossible possible. They can build, renovate and repair – they’ll deal with any construction challenge one may be facing!

    • Wild Life City (39 x 13′, Kids 6-11) Created by Nicolas Deveaux (Athleticus, 1 Meter/Hour), co-produced by Cube Creative Production and Xilam Animation. A lively action-comedy featuring realistic animated animals dives into the brightly colored hills of Wildlife City, a lovely town on the seaside where animals all live in harmony. Turtle Kate, Koala Betty, Elephant Tom and Flamingo Jason run The Lighthouse Market, a cosy hangout where you can chill out with your friends, upcycle your broken items or use the ultra-fast and eco-friendly delivery service. Everything would run smoothly, if it weren’t for a mischievous roller-skating trio of gibbons looking to undermine the Lighthouse’s popularity. Luckily, our four friends can count on each other – and their sets of wheels – to foil the monkeys’ plans. Expect epic chases and stunts, but also tons of laughter and a strong dose of emotions!

Heading across the Channel, The BFI has unveiled the latest slate from the U.K. Government-funded Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF, www.bfi.org.uk/yacf), revealing two brand-new and distinctive commissions, three recommissions and nine new development awards from across the U.K. This includes three diverse animation projects in development. Head of Fund Jackie Edwards said: “The Government-backed YACF has been transformative for the industry, breathing life into ideas that would not have come into being without it … At the grassroots stage YACF resource has improved the quality of ideas being pitched to broadcasters via our development funding, we’ve brought security and value to the sector when our young audiences need it most and crucially, we’ve brought fantastic new stories to the small screen from across the U.K. that are reflective, diverse and, as evidenced by the recommissions, hugely popular. Young audiences are 25% of the population and 100% of the future and the Fund’s role in ensuring they are adequately served by television production in the U.K. is further underlined by this latest slate of projects.

    • Attention Ayshia (Three Stones Media) is a series about a trio of young toy fixers. Ayshia, Jada and George usually find it is the human circumstances behind a toy emergency that need fixing, and this will form the core story of every episode. The series focuses on emotional intelligence with the protagonists using their skills in diplomacy, listening and compromise to solve the problems of the toys and their owners. Toy owners will not always be children, parents and grandparents will also provide encounters with a variety of moral issues relevant to Ayshia and her friends. The series will touch upon themes of self-esteem and body positivity, consent, as well as loss and rejection. Creator Rasheka Christie-Carter hopes to challenge the idea of disposable toys by using these objects as a means to explore moral lessons as well as the potential for longevity and recyclability for much loved items.
    • Libby’s Silent World (Slick Films) Inspired by the story of the team’s Oscar-winning short The Silent Child, the series will see a young deaf child Libby and her day-to-day adventures and challenges at an old-fashioned school at risk of closure. The series will be representative of D/deaf audiences and their world, with 78% of deaf children in the U.K. attending mainstream school with no specialist support in place. The producers wish to incorporate comedy to allow them to cover some more difficult subjects, highlighting the hidden challenges D/deaf people face as well as educating hearing audiences. The project has backing and guidance from Deafkidz International. The characters will be animated in 3D using motion capture, as the most cost effective way to accurately portray sign language, which has not yet been done before for television.
    • I’m Not Gonna Lie to You (Bryncoed Productions) Inspired by the dramatic increase of suicide rates in young women and girls, Natalie Mitchell tells the story of Rose, aged 13. The producers aim to produce a series that helps audiences understand mental health struggles in a truly empathetic way, showing the inside track for a young teen audience. The series will take the audience into the life and mind of Rose, represented through rotoscope animation, as her world unravels and anxiety and depression leads to suicidal thoughts. Although tackling a heavy subject, where Rose comes to view daily life as a constant threat of failure and trauma, ultimately the series is about the life of 13-year olds, and will demonstrate all the fun and humor that comes with that.

WildBrain Bakes Up Fresh ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ for Today’s Kids

The sweet little girl with the puffy bonnet and a love of baking who debuted on a Valentine’s card in 1973 is back with a cool new look and a confident, savvy attitude for young modern audiences. More than 40 years since she came on the scene, global kids’ and family entertainment leader WildBrain is ready to roll out a new animated series inspired by the popular Strawberry Shortcake franchise, plus a brand-new global franchise program spanning events, toys, games, books, music, learning and shareable experiences.

“Strawberry Shortcake has brought so much joy to children over the years, and now we’re thrilled to provide today’s generation with the opportunity to create new experiences and memories with the brand,” said Michael Riley, Chief Brands Officer, WildBrain. “While staying true to what makes Strawberry Shortcake special – her sweetness, scent and joyful strawberry motif – this new vision aims to inspire today’s girls with relevant and empowering themes of diversity, sustainability and entrepreneurship. We’ve teamed up with some amazing brand partners and have a fantastic schedule of events, social campaigns and activations lined up for the brand beginning this fall. Whether it’s baking with Mom in the kitchen, playing with scented dolls, enjoying new content on YouTube, immersing themselves in Roblox, or reading books and listening to music, today’s little girls are going to love making the new Strawberry Shortcake a big part of their lives.”

WildBrain’s relaunch takes the character into the future, fully engaging its deep expertise and resources in brand management to activate the property with content production, digital distribution and consumer products licensing. A wildly popular line of toys and consumer products in the early 1980s, Strawberry Shortcake was then licensed annually across US $500 million worth of consumer products. It went on to sell over 5 million dolls and has generated more than US $4 billion at retail to date.

The fun kicks off September 18 with the premiere of WildBrain’s original new animated series Berry in the Big City in an exclusive double-episode event only on the official Strawberry Shortcake channel on WildBrain Spark, the Company’s leading AVOD network on YouTube and YouTube Kids, where it will be available initially in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, by territory. The series trailer was unveiled today on the official channel, where new episodes will drop each Saturday following the premiere, through June 2022.

Along with her cute cat, Custard, she teams up with her new “berry besties” – Orange Blossom, Lime Chiffon, Lemon Meringue and Blueberry Muffin – as well as their lovable pets. Together, the entrepreneurial girls run their fabulous food trucks and enjoy daily adventures filled with laughter and singing as they strive to “bake the world a better place!”

“Working with WildBrain Studios to reimagine Strawberry Shortcake for Berry in the Big City has been a dream come true,” said Vogel. “This is a sweet and funny series, with modern, inclusive storytelling that I think today’s kids are going to love. We’ve captured all the adorable sweetness of Strawberry Shortcake while giving her a cool new look and a savvy ‘can do’ attitude, perfect to inspire kids to embrace their dreams and do great things.”

Season one of Berry in the Big City delivers 40 all-new four-minute adventures in 2D animation for kids aged 3-6. A second 40-episode season of Berry in the Big City has already been greenlit, and WildBrain Studios is also in development on a slate of new, CG-animated 44-minute Strawberry Shortcake family specials for a major streaming platform.

Berry in the Big City also features 10 original songs that will be released next year as animated lyric videos for kids to sing along with and enjoy on WildBrain Spark’s official Strawberry Shortcake channel. In addition to starring in a brand-new series, the bonneted little girl once famed as a popular ragdoll is graduating for the first time to the digital universe of Roblox. Beginning October 2, kids can enjoy WildBrain’s brand-new Roblox game, Baking with Strawberry Shortcake, which marks the brand’s debut on one of the world’s most popular 3D digital gaming platforms for kids. Baking with Strawberry Shortcake invites fans to dive into an interactive 3D adventure, where they can play with each other and engage with Strawberry Shortcake and her friends in a digital world not available anywhere else – customizing food trucks, creating amazing baked goods and competing in baking contests.

Available across all major gaming devices, Roblox is one of the most popular gaming platforms for kids and teens. Every day, more than 42 million people come to Roblox – over half of them under the age of 13 – to create adventures, play games, role play and learn with their friends in a family-friendly, immersive, 3D environment.

The new series and game come as WildBrain rolls out an exciting new global franchise and licensing program for the brand. Built to heighten the experiential world of Strawberry Shortcake, while celebrating the nostalgia today’s moms feel for the brand, the franchise program will feature new toys, apparel, books and more, plus celebrity spotlights, social media activations, brand partnerships, baking demonstrations and friendly competitions – all encouraging today’s parents to re-visit and share their love of Strawberry Shortcake with their little ones. The new program builds on the foundation of classic Strawberry Shortcake consumer products that continues to grow as it appeals to a sense of nostalgia in today’s parents.

Today’s moms who loved Strawberry Shortcake when they were little will be delighted to learn that Strawberry Shortcake’s signature scent is set to return in a line of collectible dolls their daughters are sure to love.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with WildBrain. Their position as a ‘new generation’ kids’ entertainment leader makes them the ideal partner to introduce today’s kids to such a beloved and iconic property,” commented Menal McGrath, VP Global Licencing, Moose Toys. “This aspirational, fun and fresh reimagining of Strawberry Shortcake gives us an incredibly exciting platform to deliver never-before-seen, ‘wow’ products that will redefine how consumers see and experience the brand.”

Additionally, WildBrain CPLG has expanded its existing Strawberry Shortcake partnership with Penguin Young Readers Licenses, an imprint of Penguin Random House, for a range of new Berry in the Big City story books, board books and sticker books, set to launch in 2022 in North America.

Other household-name brands launching new Strawberry Shortcake partnerships at retail beginning in early 2022 include Naturipe (strawberries and blueberries), Sunkist Growers (oranges, lemons and limes), Envy Apples (apples), Langers (juice), Zolli Candy (dentist-approved lollipops), Dippin’ Dots (ice cream), Snip-Its (kids’ hair salons), Challenge Butter (butter) and more.

Trekkies of all ages finally get to see the official trailer for the CG-animated kids’ series Star Trek: Prodigy, introduced by series star Kate Mulgrew, as well as official key art unveiled by executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman. The panel — which also featured voice stars Brett Gray and Dee Bradley Baker and co-EP Ben Hibon, moderated by event host Mica Burton — also revealed that the show will arrive on Paramount+ in the U.S. on Thursday, October 28 with a one-hour premiere episode.

Star Trek: Prodigy follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. The series is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

  • ‘Rats of NIMH’ Set for Animated Drama Adaptation at Fox

‘Rats of NIMH’ Set for Animated Drama Adaptation at Fox

Robert C. O’Brien’s classic children’s book trilogy The Rats of NIMH is once again scurrying down the animated adaptation pipeline, this time as a dramatic event series reportedly in the works at Fox Entertainment and MGM’s Orion Television. The project is currently in search of a writer.

The book series began with O’Brien’s 1971 Newbery Medal-winning work Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which centers on a widowed mouse who must move her four small children to their summer quarters to escape almost certain death, but fears to move her ill youngest child. Venturing into a strange underground world, she meets the highly intelligent rats from the National Institute of Mental Health laboratory, who aid the little mouse family on their perilous relocation journey.

The two subsequent books chronicling the rodents’ further extraordinary exploits, Racso and the Rats of NIMH (1986) and R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH (1990) were written by O’Brien’s daughter, Jane Leslie Conly.

The first book inspired Don Bluth’s 1982 animated fantasy feature The Secret of NIMH, which marked the animation legend’s well received feature directing debut. The movie was successful enough to spawn a direct-to-video sequel in 1998, The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue, produced without Bluth’s involvement and unrelated to the second book.

A live-action/CGI hybrid feature adaptation was announced in the works at Paramount in 2009, with Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent) attached to direct. In 2015, MGM re-acquired feature rights to the first novel, and was developing a hybrid family flick to be directed by first time helmer James Madigan and written by Ice Age scribe Michael Berg. Most recently, in 2019, the Russo Brothers were announced as executive producers on the project, as part of their deal with the studio to oversee remakes of MGM IPs.

Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn described the network’s energetic approach to growing its animation slate to Deadline:

“We’re really ramping up our own content, making deals with creators to own our own animation. There are exceptions, where we’re working with other partners to help grow our slate, doing Bedrock with Warner Bros. and Clue with eOne, but ownership is definitely a key part of it … We love our family shows, they’re iconic, but we’re looking to go beyond family and start to explore things that are more dramatic.”

Every Frame a Painting: How Axis Studios Styled ‘The Tall Grass’ for ‘Love, Death + Robots’

Multi-award-winning Glasgow animation and VFX shop Axis Studios has offered fans and fellow artists insight into how its team broke convention to create the stunning visuals of The Tall Grass, featured in Volume 2 of Netflix’s Emmy-winning adult animation anthology series Love, Death + Robots.

Created by Blur Studio founder Tim Miller and director David Fincher, Love, Death + Robots Vol. 2 is the second series of animated shorts, showcasing the work of multiple animation studios. With each story independent to the next, every episode portrays a unique narrative, differing aesthetic themes, and a broad range of creative styles. Vol. 2 welcomed Oscar-nominated director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2) as supervising director.

Returning for the second series, Axis Studios was presented with the opportunity to create the episodic short The Tall Grass, under the vision of director and VES Award-winning How to Train Your Dragon franchise alum, Simon Otto.

“We had a great collaboration with Blur on the Love, Death + Robots Vol. 1 episode Helping Hand. Blur trusted us to develop a look for The Tall Grass and really early on we were able to prove that visually we had something very interesting that sets it apart from a lot of the things we were doing but tonally in terms of storytelling fit into the vein of the LDR series,” commented Axis Studios Executive Producer Caleb Bouchard.

Adapted from Joe R. Lansdale’s tense, Lovecraftian horror story of the same name, The Tall Grass uses visually stunning CG to create a living, breathing illustration. Axis Studios set out with a mission to make every frame a painting to push the capabilities of their creative team, and create something audiences have never seen before.

“We really wanted our short to feel like a visual development painting and we had to work out how to do that in animation,” noted director Simon Otto. “The proof of concept, the first CG version of a shot blew everyone away. The team raised the bar and it set the tone for the rest of the film.”

The team at Axis relished the opportunity to utilize their skills to push the boundaries of animated storytelling outside its comfort zone. Love, Death + Robots was a chance to show the extraordinary versatility of the medium in horror storytelling. Axis created a unique look that complemented the story and emphasized its themes (and is engaged with many other equally exciting projects in the same space).

  • Fox Sets Cast for NFT Toon ‘Krapopolis’ from Dan Harmon

Fox Sets Cast for NFT Toon ‘Krapopolis’ from Dan Harmon

Emmy Award nominee Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Pam Murphy (Mapleworth Murders) and Duncan Trussell (The Midnight Gospel) have joined the voice cast of Krapopolis, FOX’s new animated comedy set in mythical ancient Greece, from Emmy Award-winning creator Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community). The show centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities — without killing each other.

Ayoade voices “Tyrannis”, the mortal son of a goddess. He’s the benevolent King of Krapopolis trying to make do in a city that lives up to its name. Waddingham plays “Deliria,” Tyrannis’ mother, goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. Within her extended Olympian family — forged in patricide and infidelity — she’s known as the trashy one. Berry is “Shlub,” Tyrannis’ father, a mantitaur (half centaur [horse + human], half manticore [lion + human + scorpion]). He is oversexed and underemployed, claims to be an artist and has literally never paid for anything, in any sense of that word, for his entire life. Murphy voices “Stupendous,” Tyrannis’ half-sister, daughter of Deliria and a cyclops. Trussell plays “Hippocampus,” Tyrannis’ half-brother, offspring of Shlub and a mermaid — and, obviously, a hot mess, biologically speaking.

The series is an outgrowth of the direct animation deal Harmon and FOX Entertainment unveiled last year. Wholly owned and financed by FOX Entertainment and to be produced by FOX’s Emmy Award-winning animation studio, Bento Box Entertainment, the project also is the first series to move forward under FOX’s broadcast direct model. Additionally, Krapopolis will serve as the first-ever FOX/Bento Box animated series curated entirely on the blockchain.

The company will launch a dedicated marketplace for Krapopolis that will curate and sell digital goods, ranging from NFTs of one-of-a-kind character and background art and GIFs, as well as tokens that provide exclusive social experiences to engage and reward super fans. An NFT of the Krapopolis cast image is minted on the Eluvio content blockchain with token metadata. FOX Corp. announced a strategic investment in the platform at the end of August.

Writer/producer/animator Jordan Young (Drawn Together, BoJack Horseman) has been named executive producer/showrunner. Young will work under Harmon’s supervision and handle the series’ day-to-day activities.

  • Apple TV+ Sets Fall Kids’ Lineup, Trailers ‘Wolfboy and the Everything Factory’

Apple TV+ Sets Fall Kids’ Lineup, Trailers ‘Wolfboy and the Everything Factory’

Apple TV+ today announced an expanded lineup of series for kids and families that will premiere globally this fall alongside its award-winning slate, including new animated series Wolfboy and the Everything Factory, from creators Toff Mazery and Edward Jesse; Get Rolling with Otis, based on the popular books by New York Times best-selling author-illustrator Loren Long; and live-action scripted series Puppy Place, based on the Scholastic best-selling book series.

Wolfboy and the Everything Factory — Inspired by the work of visual artist Toff ‘Wirrow’ Mazery, co-created by Emmy winner Edward Jesse (HITRECORD’s Create Together), developed by Emmy winner Michael Ryan (All Hail King Julien, Kung Fu Panda) and executive produced by Emmy winner Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Mr. Corman), HITRECORD and FOX Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment, the 10-episode animated epic follows Wolfboy (voiced by Kassian Akhtar), an imaginative oddball who discovers a strange realm at the center of the earth where fantastical beings called ‘Sprytes’ create things for the natural world on the surface — clouds, trees, rabbits, dreams, hiccups, memories, time … everything! With his newfound Spryte friends, Wolfboy learns that not only can he use the creative energy of the Everything Factory to make his wild imagination come to life, but that he is destined to play a central role in an age-old battle between the forces of creation and destruction. Wolfboy soon comes to realize that being different is what makes him special — and that, ultimately, it’s the oddballs and dreamers who change the world.

In addition to young newcomer Akhtar as the titular Wolfboy, the series is voiced by Critics’ Choice Award nominee Archie Yates (Jojo Rabbit) as Sprout, Lilly Williams as Xandra, Cristina Milizia (DC Superhero Girls) as Floof and Gordon-Levitt voicing Professor Luxcraft. The series is peppered with a number of special performances, including Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) and Gordon-Levitt’s former 3rd Rock from the Sun castmate, stage and screen legend John Lithgow.

Creators Mazery and Jesse are joined by showrunner Ryan as writers and executive producers, while HITRECORD founder Gordon-Levitt, Emmy winner Jared Geller (Create Together) and Emmy winners and Bento Box Co-Founders Scott Greenberg and Joel Kuwahara (Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons) also executive produce. All 10 episodes of the first season of Wolfboy and the Everything Factory will premiere Friday, September 24, on Apple TV+.

Get Rolling with Otis — Based on the Penguin Random House book series by Loren Long, Get Rolling With Otis will premiere globally on Apple TV+ Friday, October 8. This animated adventure series from 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films welcomes young viewers to Long Hill Dairy Farm, home to Otis the Tractor and all his friends. Otis may be little, but he has a big heart. Whenever he sees a friend in need, he hits the brakes, asks how they’re feeling, and rolls into action to help! The series is executive produced by Vince Commisso, Wendy Harris, author Loren Long, Darragh O’Connell, Angela C. Santomero and Jane Startz.

Puppy Place — Based on the best-selling books from Scholastic, Puppy Place chronicles the adventures of dog-loving siblings, Charles and Lizzie Peterson, and the puppy pals they foster in search of forever homes. Premiering on Apple TV+ Friday, October 15, each of the eight live-action episodes tells the story of a puppy who finds his or her way to the Peterson family. Charles (Riley Looc) and Lizzie (Brooklynn MacKinzie), whose different approaches complement, inspire, and occasionally confound one another, do whatever it takes to find a happy, loving home for each and every dog. Discovering what makes each puppy special offers a unique perspective that helps the pair overcome their own individual hurdles. Produced by Iole Lucchese, Caitlin Friedman and Jef Kaminsky of Scholastic Entertainment, Andrew Green, Linda Mathious, Heather MacGillvray, Vincent Brown and Ari Posner.

The newly announced series will join Apple TV+’s series and films from some of today’s most trusted franchises in kids and family programming, including Daytime Emmy Award-winning Ghostwriter and Helpsters from Sesame Workshop; Academy Award-nominated animated film Wolfwalkers; Daytime Emmy Award-winner for Outstanding Special Class Daytime Animated Program, Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth; new series from Peanuts and WildBrain including The Snoopy Show; as well as upcoming series Fraggle Rock and Harriet the Spy from The Jim Henson Company; and Jane, a new mission-driven series from J.J. Johnson, Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Jane Goodall Institute.

How prosperous your nation is, how many powerful warriors it boasts, and how heroic and strong its king is. These are the criteria that factor into the system known as the Ranking of Kings.

Bojji was born the first prince of the kingdom ruled by King Bosse, who is ranked number seven in the Ranking of Kings. But Bojji was born unable to hear, and is not even strong enough to swing a sword. In consequence, not only his own retainers, but also the public, look down upon him as completely unfit to be king. But when Bojji finds his first friend, Kage, this fateful encounter ignites a tiny spark of courage, and their lives both take a dramatic turn.

The heart-wrenching, yet heartwarming tale features animation production by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-), with direction by Yosuke Hatta (One Punch Man, Death Parade) and character design by Atsuko Nozaki (Lupin the 3rd, Samurai Champloo, Attack on Titan). The music is composed by MAYUKO (Cells at Work!). The opening theme, “BOY,” is performed by King Gnu.

  • Four Artists Selected for Inaugural FLAMIN Animations Program

Four artist-animators have been selected as part of Film London and Arts Council England’s FLAMIN Animations, a new program of commissions for early-career Black-identifying artist animators living in the U.K. This first wave of creators are Toby Cato, Mothy Muyobo, Ezra Myers and Zainab Sanyang. The four new animation commissions will premiere on the Film London website in winter 2021, and the artist-animators will receive support in gaining further exposure for their work.

Part of FLAMIN (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network) and as part of Film London’s increased commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, the program aims to support artist-animators aged 18-25 as they take their first steps into a career working with the moving image, providing development support, bespoke mentoring and £2,500 to create a new one- to three-minute animation.

Chosen from a high calibre of applications, the selected artists follow both non-traditional and traditional animation routes to making work, using and combining techniques ranging across photography, hand-drawn, collage and digital to explore identity and heritage, social structure and lived experience. Past works have included the creation of dream-like realities, fusing animation with experimental music, reflecting upon historical events and simply capturing the everyday world around us.

“We’re delighted to announce the four artist animators selected for the first-ever FLAMIN Animations program. Toby, Mothy, Ezra and Zainab brilliantly explore crucial issues through bold and innovative work, and we look forward to showcasing the content they create later this year,” said Adrian Wootton, OBE, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission. “This program is a considered acknowledgement of the underrepresentation of Black-identifying artists within the art, film, and animation industries and we hope that it creates a network of next-generation artists — not only for those commissioned, but for all who applied — spotlighting the incredible skills the country has to offer within the ever-growing animation sector.”

“I’m a self-taught animator living in South East London and working freelance. I’m fascinated by the magic of animation and started to teach myself from a book by Richard Williams when I was 18. My main interests are experimenting with physical media in order to create the illusion of life and movement. My first love is drawing, but I work with photography, paint and digital animation to find new and interesting styles. I also make music and infuse my animation work with experimental hip-hop and funk soundtracks. My dad is of Jamaican heritage and me and my sisters find that history to be a huge source of inspiration in our work. I am influenced by Jamaican cinema and the work of experimental animation artists such as Frank Lebon, Lotte Reiniger and Ralph Bakshi. I’m particularly interested in creating dream-like realities where I can live in the world of imagination — my only nation. My recent animations deal with finding my own identity as a young black man and with challenging the roles that black and female characters play in film and animation.”

“I have been animating for a little while now, after changing my education path at 16 to media. I’ve always been into making things move. In my youth I was into flipbooks and would save the corners of my school workbooks for my art. I immediately knew this was my calling. Being able to work on such a big task and creating a narrative from your own imagination from start to finish is so rewarding, the outcome becomes secondary. The problem solving that comes with animating helps me to view not only art, but life through multiple lenses. Although a lack of resources may hinder some, I take this challenge on! If I have a vision it will be executed some way or another. And I always want to send out a bigger message. Black trans, Black women, Black men and Black children, are all on my agenda.”

“My work often alludes to social misconceptions of cultural practices, with psychological underpinnings. I make conscious efforts to depict the cultural values and practices of my Caribbean heritage, which reflect my experiences and desire to gain a deeper insight into my own identity. Throughout my youth, I always had heavy involvement in Steel Pans and Notting Hill carnival in London. This has enabled me to draw upon both authentic Caribbean experiences as well as my experiences of merged Caribbean and British cultures. As part of my approach, I reflect on historic events, people and music to draw parallels between processes and a range of societal outcomes. This contributes to an expression of my human experience and consequently opens up a ‘grey area’ for greater understanding of differential perception across different classes and cultures around the world.”

“I’m a multi-disciplinary artist specialising in illustration and animation, currently based in Plymouth, England. I create because I’m curious and excited about the world around me and want to learn more about it, so I can create more dynamic pieces. I really enjoy bringing life to static imagery and mundane moments of everyday life. For example, bringing movement to a washing line or drawing the time passing by. When I create, I love to explore texture, which leads me to mainly use simple materials like pencils and markers that allow me to explore bold lines and fine details to try to imitate textures and organic subjects, for example people, flora and fauna and the world around me. In the future I’d like to experiment with finding a combined way of working to bring my traditional voice and my digital voice together.”

Disney+ is creeping into Halloween season with the trailer debut for LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, an all-new animated special from Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group, animated by Atomic Cartoons, premiering October 1. Poe (Jake Green) and BB-8 must make an emergency landing on the volcanic planet Mustafar where they meet the greedy and conniving Graballa the Hutt (Dana Snyder) who has purchased Darth Vader’s castle and is renovating it into the galaxy’s first all-inclusive Sith-inspired luxury hotel. While waiting for his X-wing to be repaired, Poe, BB-8, Graballa and the Hutt’s plucky mechanic Dean (Raphael Alejandro) venture deep into the mysterious castle with Vader’s loyal servant, Vaneé (Tony Hale).

Along the way, Vaneé shares three creepy stories linked to ancient artifacts and iconic villains from across all eras of Star Wars: “The Lost Boy,” the story of how a young Ben Solo first meets Ren; “The Dueling Monstrosities,” which imagines how Darth Maul and General Grievous were reborn; and “The Wookiee’s Paw,” which gives a look at what might have happened if all of Luke Skywalker’s greatest wishes were immediately granted. The special is sure to leave fans with spine-tingling chills and goose-bricks. As Vaneé spins his tales and lures our heroes deeper into the shadowy underbelly of the castle, a sinister plan emerges. With the help of Dean, Poe and BB-8 will have to face their fears, stop an ancient evil from rising, and escape to make it back to their friends.

The voice cast also features Christian Slater as Ren, Trevor Devall as Emperor Palpatine, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as NI-L8 and Matt Sloan as Darth Vader. David Shayne is the writer and an executive producer, and the director is Ken Cunningham.

A Tale Dark & Grimm follows Hansel and Gretel as they walk out of their own story into a winding and wickedly witty tale full of strange — and scary — surprises. The series is produced in partnership with Boat Rocker Studios in association with Novo Media Group and Astro-Nomical Entertainment. Animation services by Boat Rocker’s Jam Filled Entertainment. Announced back in June, the CG-animated adaptation of the best-selling book series by Adam Gidwitz debuts October 8 on Netflix.

Quintero began pitching Slay to Epic after the UE5 demo wrapped. The proposal was to create a finished piece of final-pixel animated content in Unreal Engine. With Mold3D beginning to gain a reputation for environment art, they were excited to illustrate their expertise in story development and character design. With the exception of Windwalker Echo, the Slay assets (including her adversary) were all designed and created by Mold3D.

As the project was greenlit just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the studio quickly transitioned to a remote working environment to create real-time rendered animation — as well as Mold3D’s other projects — using virtual production techniques. Motion-capture was created in Las Vegas, with Quintero’s team in Burbank directing the actors via Zoom while viewing the results on the characters in real time in Unreal Engine, making it easy to ensure they had the takes they wanted. After the main motion was captured, the team did a second session with the actor just for facial capture. For this, they used the Live Link Face iOS app.

“Although we probably would have done a lot of things the same way we had if there was no pandemic, we were thankfully able to rely on the virtual production aspect of the filmmaking to save the day,” said Quintero. “We were able to look at her takes with the recording that came out of the iPhone and also, on the day, we could see the camera looking at her.”

The team had previously modeled the assets in Maya and ZBrush, before blocking out the animation in Maya and bringing it into Unreal Engine via FBX, where they also blocked out the cameras in Sequencer, Unreal Engine’s built-in multi-track nonlinear editor. Taking advantage of the engine’s ability to render the files in real time, they brought in animation daily, starting in a very crude state, even while the models themselves were still being finalized. For look development, the team used lots of Unreal Engine’s materials and shaders, including vertex shaders and decals to not only give a unique effect, but to help maintain real-time performance.

“It was great to see the previs with light and color. You gained a taste of what it was going to look like right away, instead of having to wait a few months to start getting a little bit more involved. That was valuable, as it helped us visualize and finesse the look along the way,” noted Quintero. “It’s combining tricks, techniques and processes that were learned in the years I spent working in the visual effects and animation industry, with the benefits of being able to quickly iterate and visualize the results in real time.”

In addition, Mold3D used Unreal Engine’s Landscape toolset to create the terrain, and Quixel Megascans — which are free for all use with Unreal Engine — to populate the environment. Effects, such as the glowing orb, were mostly done in Niagara, Unreal Engine’s visual effects system. Lighting played a key role in the look of the project, with the team taking advantage of Unreal Engine’s real-time ray tracing capabilities to produce sophisticated effects. To finesse close-up lighting on the characters, they built movie-style lighting rigs in Unreal Engine, enabling them to create beauty lighting, rim lighting, key lighting, and so on.

“We had a certain look that we were going for. I think originally, we wanted this to be very stylized, like a manga/anime kind of thing, but it went more towards trying to make it look realistic. And it ended up being a little bit of a hybrid, not super photoreal, but it has a little bit of a stylized tinge to it. The lighting was a big part of that; we worked with several lighters to get the correct look,” Quintero explained. The quick change potential of real-time lighting was one of the things the team most appreciated: “If it’s not working for the shot, you can quickly move the sun direction or quickly move the character light and kind of feel your way there, instead of having to light, render overnight, come back, check your renders and not be happy.”

Apart from the obvious benefits of being able to render out frames in fractions of a second rather than minutes or hours, Mold3D also relished being able to conduct multiple aspects of production at once — for example, working on look development in parallel to animation and being able to make decisions flexibly, based on the context of the visuals; not to mention composition, timing, camera and lighting.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the creative collaboration and continued support from the team at Epic Games,” said Quintero. “They were there for us every step of the way. Our company grew by leaps and bounds on this project, and we look forward to many more cool productions in Unreal Engine.”
