OIAF Complements Virtual 45th Edition with In-Person Screenings

The virtual Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) 2021, marking its 45th anniversary edition this month, goes in-person for special screenings from September 22-26 at the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) in the Alma Duncan Salon. Ottawa’s largest film festival and the oldest animation event in North America shines a spotlight on two Canadian animation works that dig deep into the human condition creating moments of reflection and discomfort.

    Meneath: Hidden Island of Ethics
    Meneath: Hidden Island of Ethics

Hot on the heels of its acclaimed debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is the stop-motion film Meneath: Hidden Island of Ethics. A tale of contrasts, Meneath brings audiences into the world of a young Métis child who is confronted with the duality of her European and Indigenous heritages.

“Lately, I’ve been obsessed with the new term ‘code-switching,’” said Meneath director Terril Calder, in her statement accompanying the film at the OAG. “My film … would try to take this on, in the form of a little girl. A little girl who has a secret voice in her head helping her navigate the world as Métis. I’m letting the viewer in on that voice to help gain a better understanding of a different value system. Her journey is a story of healing, of acceptance and reconciliation after trauma.”

A National Film Board of Canada film, Meneath is not to be missed at the OIAF. Courtesy of Calder, the puppets used in the film will be on display at the OAG outside of the Alma Duncan Salon. This is a rare opportunity to see these works in-person.

Frank Horvat - "What the Walls Feel as They Stare at Rob Ford Sitting in His Office"
Frank Horvat – “What the Walls Feel as They Stare at Rob Ford Sitting in His Office”

Playing on a loop alongside Meneath at the OAG is the animated music video for Frank Horvat’s “What the Walls Feel as They Stare at Rob Ford Sitting in His Office.” Described as “the muted despair and confusion of Rob Ford or something like that,” this animated work takes viewers into a space that some may be familiar with, the unresolved.

“I came up with this idea of a two-dimensional grid of dots, oscillating in different ways but always bound to an underlying flat surface. It seemed to express various confounding emotions, bubbling and emerging but almost completely muted by the same restraint that keeps the music sedate and sorrowful,” explained director Guillaume Pelletier-Auger in his statement accompanying the film at the OAG.

Viewers can lean into the puzzling nature of Pelletier-Auger’s work by watching the animated music video on loop. Some may find that with each viewing they discover a new sensation, potentially a sense of comfort in the undefined.

Audiences can attend these in-person screenings for free at the OAG during regular hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT from September 22-26; tickets are free.

Passes to attend the online OIAF range from $30 CAD for student passes and $60 CAD for regular passes. Single tickets or a package of 5 tickets are available for purchase to attend festival screenings. Passes and tickets can be purchased on the OIAF website.

HTC Viveport Launches ‘Cat Art’ Exhibition with Shu Yamamoto

Celebrated Japanese artist Shu Yamamoto has partnered with HTC’s virtual reality (VR) application platform Viveport to launch the “Step into Cat Art” virtual exhibition, adding a new dimension to his work by allowing cat characters in static paintings to “come to life” in VR for the first time. This unique experience kicks off Friday, September 17 and will run through March 31, 2022.

The showcase will feature virtual versions of all 124 pieces of Yamamoto’s The Hisstine Chapel murals for the first time and will also include world-renowned pieces such as Mewna Lisa and The Kitty with the Pearl Earring. The CAT ART virtual exhibition allows multiple visitors to enter the same venue at the same time for a lively, immersive virtual exhibition experience. In addition, the exhibition supports cross-device viewing on any mobile, PC, or VR device.

Further breaking down the walls between art and reality, a cat Instagram filter will launch for iOS and Android devices, allowing people to create their own adaptations of CAT ART, featuring the faces of their own pet cats. The Viveport technical team had helped Yamamoto redesign his classical cat paintings to include dynamic movement, audio details and interactive elements, making the VR pieces jump out of the frame of the canvas.

“Viveport’s mission is to enrich people culturally in VR across art, games and video, and in doing so continue to grow and expand the robust VIVE Metaverse worldwide. It’s incredible seeing how immersion can completely change the way you experience a moment, whether that’s appreciating artwork, watching a story or playing a game,” said Joseph Lin, President of Viveport.

Award-Winning Short ‘Anacronte’ Gets US Streaming Release Through HBO Max

HBO Max and WarnerMedia OneFifty have partnered to acquire the exclusive North American streaming rights from RMVISTAR for the animated short film Anacronte, premiering on HBO Max on September 15. WarnerMedia OneFifty is also developing Anacronte as a multimedia project.

Anacronte focuses on devilish gods who arbitrarily torpedo innocent people whose worlds are thrown out of joint by the blows of arrows, uniting them in death and grief. The 3D CGI animated short film was produced by Mr. Bug Studio, one of the leading animation and transmedia content studios based in Argentina, in collaboration with Raúl Koler, who wrote the original short story and serves as director. Emiliano Sette served as co-director and executive producer of the film and oversaw the film adaptation along with Koler.

The film has won 130 awards worldwide, including in Los Angeles, London, New York and Venice, and has been selected as official festival selections in more than 300 festivals around the world. Most recently, Anacronte was the festival winner at the 2021 FILMHAUS: Berlin Film + New Media Competition.

“RMVISTAR is once again very pleased to be working with HBO Max and we look forward to our new development endeavor with WarnerMedia OneFifty,” commented RMVISTAR Founder and President Rose Marie Vega. “Anacronte is a wonderful short film that pierces your heart with its beautiful tapestry built upon an amazing universe that the creative team at Mr. Bug has brought to life in their incredibly powerful film sans the spoken word.”

“This film exemplifies what WarnerMedia OneFifty is all about: It is a powerful, unique, and bold vision from a talented creative team and an innovative filmmaker that perfectly juxtaposes, art, science and culture,” said Axel Caballero, Head of WarnerMedia OneFifty & Vice President, Artistic and Cultural Innovations.

Leslie Cohen, Senior Vice President, Content Acquisitions for HBO and HBO Max, added, “Particularly during this difficult year, Anacronte beautifully illustrates universal human hardships. This is a mesmerizing and healing film that I am so happy to bring to the HBO Max platform.”

The deal was negotiated by Cohen for HBO and RMVISTAR’s Vega. Earlier this year, HBO Max closed a deal for Megamedia Chile’s Isabel with RMVISTAR in association with MGE Entertainment. The three-part miniseries based on the life of Isabel Allende – the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author and a tireless fighter for human rights – premiered on HBO Max in March. • Ellipsanime, TimpelPictures Team for Spooky Mystery Series ‘Under the School’

Ellipsanime, TimpelPictures Team for Spooky Mystery Series ‘Under the School’

French studios Ellipsanime Productions and TimpelPictures are developing Under the School — the first original animated series created by director Nicolas Bary (Little Spirou, Trouble at Timpetill). The 26 x 26′ mystery-adventure for kids 7-12, produced in 2D-rendered 3D animation, is one of the projects selected for the 2021 Cartoon Forum taking place in Toulouse next week.

Under the School raises the curtain on the enigmatic St. Josephs, a unique boarding school whose teaching methods have transformed the world’s worst dunces into the world’s best students. To do this, St. Joseph’s has a secret: Under the school’s floors is a “reconditioning” system to put the kids “on the straight and narrow,” which is as efficient as it is mysterious. But these plotting pedagogs didn’t count on Bug and his little brother Doudou, two new pupils who aren’t going to go quietly!

“Through their adventures, the heroes and heroines have to learn how to trust each other and surpass themselves. It is a series where the children learn to bend the school’s strict rules to learn in a different way,” said Arthur Colignon, Producer, Ellipsanime. “The series encourages the right to be different, to show that the academic education system does not suit everyone and that there are lots of ways of succeeding in life. That is what attracted us in particular about Nicolas Bary’s project.”

“I imagined the universe of the series over 15 years ago, delving into my memories as the dunce at the back of the class, having experienced life in a boarding school,” Bary explained. “Our ambition with the artistic team — Justine Cunha, the graphic novelist; Cyril Deydier, the co-writer; and Max Maléo, the director — is to plunge children into a retro-modern world: as realistic as it is spectacular with its sets. And at its heart is an investigation which will take them into the bowels of the school. No super-powers in our story, just the power of the imagination and everyone’s individual talents, which remains their greatest strength.”

Mediatoon Distribution is handling international distribution for the series.

Under the School is also being adapted as a comic book, co-edited by Dupuis and TimpelPictures. Three volumes in all are slated, two of which have been written and are now in the drawing phase.

Bary is a producer, writer and director who made his first feature film Trouble at Timpetill (adapted from the Henry Winterfeld novel) at age 26. He delivered The Scapegoat, based on Daniel Pennac’s best seller, in 2012, and later founded his second production company, TimpelPictures. Bary’s latest movie, Little Spirou (2017), is an adaptation of the famous comics by Tome and Janry, published by Dupuis.

Founded in 1989, Ellipsanime is a production company under the Media-Participations Group specializing in kids and family animated programs. The Paris and Angouleme-based studio’s catalog includes The Adventures of Tintin, Babar, The Pirate Family, Kid Lucky and The Fox-Badger Family.

GKIDS Puts ‘Pompo the Cinephile’ in Frame for NorAm Release

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced today it has acquired all North American distribution rights for the stylish ode to filmmaking, Pompo the Cinephile (Eiga Daisuki Pompo-san). Known for his dynamic, maximalist animation sequences, Director Takayuki Hirao (God Eater, The Garden of Sinners) returns to the director’s chair with production from the all-new studio CLAP.

An official selection at the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival, Pompo the Cinephile was domestically released on June 4, 2021, and has remained an indie hit, playing for 15 weeks and counting, with a current box office of ¥200,000,000 (approx. $1.8 million USD) to date. Fueled by the excitement from the film’s domestic release, a crowdfunding campaign to create a 35mm print of the feature achieved its fundraising goals of ¥10,000,000 (approx. $91,000 USD) in just 11 days.

Pompo the Cinephile is a completely charming and original work,” said GKIDS President David Jesteadt. “Both hilarious and earnest, its contemplation of what it takes to pursue an artistic vision is an inspiration for these times. I cannot wait to share the experience with audiences in theaters early next year.”

GKIDS will release Pompo the Cinephile theatrically in both its original Japanese language and an all-new English dubbed version early next year. The all-rights North American distribution deal was negotiated between GKIDS and AVEX Pictures Inc., who handle international sales.

Synopsis: Pompo is a talented and gutsy producer in “Nyallywood,” the movie-making capital of the world. Although she’s known for B-movies, one day Pompo tells her movie-loving but apprehensive assistant Gene that he will direct her next script: a delicate drama about an aging and tormented creative genius, starring the legendary and Brando-esque actor Martin Braddock, and a young actress seeking her first break. But when the production heads towards chaos, can Gene rise to Pompo’s challenge, and succeed as a first-time director?

Pompo the Cinephile is a rollicking, exuberant ode to the power of the movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to the pursuit of a “masterpiece.”

The new Max Original adult animated comedy series Ten Year Old Tom (10 episodes) will debut Thursday, September 30 on HBO Max. An official trailer was unveiled today, showing the slings and arrows that befall a good boy getting bad advice.

The series is created and written by Steve Dildarian (The Life & Times of Tim), who will executive produce with TV animation veteran Nick Weidenfeld (The Boondocks, Rick and Morty). Dildarian also plays the lead character, Tom, alongside a talented cast of actors and comedians including Byron Bowers, Todd Glass, Gillian Jacobs, Edi Patterson and John Malkovich, with guest appearances by David Duchovny, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lyonne, Mark Proksch, Tim Robinson, George Wallace and more.

“Steve Dildarian is a tremendous talent and a wonderful collaborator,” said Billy Wee, SVP, Comedy and Animation, HBO Max. “We can’t wait for comedy fans everywhere to experience the absurd brilliance of Ten Year Old Tom.”

Being a kid is hard enough for Tom, but when bad influences seem to lurk around every corner – from litigious parents and drug dealing bus drivers to school administrators who want to sleep with his mom – it’s downright impossible. While the adults in Tom’s life certainly mean well, they just can’t manage to lead by example.

The series is produced by Work Friends – a joint venture between Weidenfeld and Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partnership). Executive producers also include Marty Adelstein (Cowboy Bebop, Hanna) and Becky Clements (Snowpiercer, Physical) of Tomorrow Studio. ITV Studios will handle international distribution.

  • ‘Time Flies’: Aardman & Catsnake Paint a Call to Conservation for RSPB Legacy Program

‘Time Flies’: Aardman & Catsnake Paint a Call to Conservation for RSPB Legacy Program

Multi award-winning and independent studio Aardman recently teamed up with third sector creative specialists Catsnake to develop a stunning watercolor-style animated film that celebrates the work of the U.K.’s largest nature conservation charity, the RSPB. The 60-second animation, “Time Flies,” which features the voice of Academy Award-winning actor Jim Broadbent, debuted last week on national TV and online to coincide with Remember a Charity Week (September 6-12).

The spot was created to raise awareness for the charity’s vital conservation work, and inspire more people to help secure a healthy environment for wildlife in the future by remembering to leave a legacy to the RSPB.

Catsnake’s brand research for the RSPB gleaned that the charity’s target audience have an inherent connection to the nature that surrounds them, and a profound appreciation of this connection’s importance to our collective future. Catsnake developed the “Time Flies” creative to capture this feeling – using the central metaphor of a baby blue tit separated from its parents, before finding its way home, to illustrate that although we have become disconnected from the natural world over time, the RSPB is working tirelessly to help us rebuild this vital bond – so that one day, people and nature can truly thrive together.

Catsnake felt the most effective way to capture the beauty and majesty of nature over hundreds of years was through the medium of animation, and the watercolor design was established to provoke feelings of nostalgia with the viewer – the hand-crafted aesthetic connecting beautifully with the organic nature of the story. The outfit worked collaboratively with director Bram Ttwheam and the team of expert artists at Aardman to bring this vision to life.

“Catsnake have a penchant for strong narrative with a lot of heart,” Ttwheam enthused. “Edward communicates with such clarity and aplomb that it’s been an absolute pleasure to share a vision. Pieces with such rich seams come along rarely, and it was a joy to explore the myriad possibilities. Working in a different style and telling a story with such scope has been immensely rewarding. If the opportunity to work together ever happens again I’ll seize it with both hands.”

“Working with Aardman on the ‘Time Flies’ TV advert for the RSPB has been an absolute pleasure. You never quite know if the good reputation of a company is true until you start working with them and, I’m delighted to say, Aardman have lived up to their glowing reputation!” said Edward Dark, co-director of the film and CEO of Catsnake. “I have personally found directing this project with the extremely talented and amicable (two traits that don’t always go together) Bram Ttwheam to be a joy. Not only have we been on the same page from day one, but the creative flair, originality and immense technical skill that he and the whole Aardman team brought to the project has made the final film immeasurably better. I’m extremely proud of what we have produced together and hope we can do it again soon.”

Vicki O’Hare, Head of Legacy Marketing at the RSPB added, “We’re extremely proud of our new legacy TV advert; the successful culmination of months of work between the RSPB Legacy team, Catsnake and Aardman. The way that the story is told through stunning animation will hopefully touch the hearts of people across the nation as they follow the journey of our fledgling blue tit through a changing landscape; one that can only be saved for future generations by acting now. Gifts in Wills make up over a quarter of the RSPB’s income, so it’s vital that we raise awareness of how important they are.”

Get an action-packed sneak peek at Netflix’s new animated event series Maya and the Three in an all-new clip — featuring a death-dealing deity hot on Maya’s trail. The clip has dropped in tandem with the premiere date announcement of October 22, as well as a flurry of informational, digital trading cards introducing the pantheon of this Mesoamerican-inspired world of epic myth.

Synopsis: In a fantastical world, where magic turns the world and four kingdoms rule the lands, a brave and rebellious warrior princess named Maya is about to celebrate her fifteenth birthday and coronation. But everything changes when the gods of the underworld arrive and announce that Maya’s life is forfeit to the God of War — a price she must pay for her family’s secret past. If Maya refuses, the whole world will suffer the gods’ vengeance. To save her beloved family, her friends, and her own life, Maya embarks on a thrilling quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy that foretells the coming of three great warriors who will help her defeat the gods and save humankind.
