GKIDS Cuddles Up with ‘Napping Princess’

GKIDS has picked up North American distribution rights to the beautifully animated Japanese sci-fi fantasy Napping Princess, which first bowed in home soil cinemas in March. Having just opened in the UK, Napping Princess will make its US debut in New York (Village East Cinema) and Los Angeles (Laemmle Monica Film Center) on September 8, followed by a national expansion.

Formerly known as Ancien and the Magic Tablet, this is the latest film from writer-director Kenji Kamiyama (East of Eden, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and produced by Signal.MD — the three year old sister studio of Production I.G. The 2D animated feature screened in the official selection at this year’s Annecy animation fest — as Ancien — and recently won the Best Animated Feature Gold award at Fantasia (see all the animation winners here). GKIDS will release Napping Princess both in the original Japanese and as a new English dub.

“We fell in love with Kenji Kamiyama’s unique vision in Napping Princess,” said David Jesteadt, President of GKIDS. “His blend of near-future science-fiction, family drama, and detective story results in a high-octane, thought-provoking adventure that all ages can enjoy.”

Synopsis: The year is 2020, three days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics. While she should be studying for her exams, Kokone Morikawa is often dozing off, stuck between reality and a dream-world full of fantastic motorized contraptions. But after her father, a talented but mysterious mechanic, is kidnapped for stealing technology from a powerful corporation, it’s up to Kokone and her childhood friend Morio to save him.

Together they realize that Kokone’s dream-world holds the answers to the mystery behind the stolen tech, and they embark on a journey that traverses dreams and reality, city and country, and past and present. Their mission uncovers a trail of clues to her father’s disappearance and ultimately a surprising revelation about Kokone’s family.

Art Directors Guild Introduces Animation Award

The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) has dubbed the 22nd Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards theme “Production Design in Animation: Celebrating 100 Years of Imagination,” and will take the opportunity to present the inaugural Excellence in Production Design for an Animated Feature Film award category. The announcement was made by ADG Event Producers Thomas A. Wash ADG and Thomas Wilkins ADG.

The annual awards gala honoring the best in motion picture, TV, commercial and music video production design will take place Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.

“It is our intention to honor and celebrate great Production Design achievements in the remarkable and evolving art form of animation through this new award,” said Walsh. “By separating feature animation into its own constituent category, we wish to pay tribute to these creative works in a manner equivalent to all our other feature design categories.”

The ADG has previously recognized the achievements of animated titles over the past 11 years with nominations in the “Fantasy Feature Film” category. These nominees have included Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E and The Adventures of Tintin.

Key qualifications for the Animated Feature Film category are:

    – Animated feature films representing 2D (hand drawn), 3D (CGI), clay animation/puppet and motion–capture (live-action/CGI hybrid) will all qualify for this award category.

    – A feature film must have the majority of its sets and locations created using a frame-by-frame technique, and usually falls into one of the two general fields of animation: narrative or abstract.

    – Some of the techniques of animating films include but are not limited to hand-drawn animation, computer animation, stop-motion, clay animation, pixilation, cutout animation, pinscreen, camera multiple pass imagery, kaleidoscopic effects created frame-by-frame, and drawing on the film frame itself.

    – Motion capture and real-time puppetry are not by themselves animation techniques.

    – Animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.

    – A narrative animated film must have a significant number of the Top 8 major characters animated.

    – If the picture is created in a cinematic style that could be mistaken for live action, producers must submit information supporting how and why the picture is substantially a work of animation rather than live action.

    Complete rules available here.

Submissions will be open online Oct. 5 – Nov. 9, 2017. Nomination voting will be open Dec. 6, 2017 – Jan. 3, 2018 and announced Jan. 4. Final voting will take place Jan. 8 – Jan. 25, 2018. These dates and more info can be tracked here.

  • LA Anime Fest Reveals Full Film Lineup

LA Anime Fest Reveals Full Film Lineup

The Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) has set its opening and closing night films, as well as the full lineup in between. Taking place September 15-17 in Downtown LA, the event will kick off with No Game No Life Zero — the highly anticipated prequel film to the popular series No Game No Life, from Madhouse studio and director Ishizuka Atsuko — and will close with Katsuhiro Otomo’s cyberpunk masterpiece Akira, which will mark its 30th anniversary next year. LA-AFF is this year toasting the 100th anniversary of Japanese animation.

Presented by Sentai Filmworks, No Game No Life Zero takes place six thousand years before Sora and Shiro were even a blink in the history of Disboard. War consumed the land, tearing apart the heavens, destroying stars, and even threatening to wipe out the human race. Amid the chaos and destruction, a young man named Riku leads humanity toward the tomorrow his heart believed in. One day, in the ruins of an Elf city, he meets Shuvi, a female exiled “ex-machina” android who asks him to teach her what it means to have a human heart.

To mark the anime centennial, LA-AFF will screen one of the first Japanese animated short films, Junichi Kouichi’s Namakura Katana (1917), during the opening ceremony on Sept. 15.

The event will also host the North American Premiere of King of Prism by PrettyRhythm which earned over 7 million dollars in Japanese box offices. One of the key features that led to this film’s major success lies in the unique “cheering screening style,” which allows the audience to engage with the movie just as they would during a live music event by bringing their own glow sticks and cheering the characters during the presentation.

Program highlights will also include Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro and Porco Rosso, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Love Live! The School Idol Movie, Metropolis, Paprika in 35mm, The Red Turtle and Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. LA-AFF has planned a diverse slate of features — including new releases and fan-favorites — as well as special events such as Q&A sessions with talent and creators and an opening night red carpet gala.

All screenings will take place at the Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center. LA-AFF is presented by international creative company Rydgen Inc., in partnership with LA-based film distribution company Azoland Pictures.

When the mutilated master of multiplicity Two-Face (Shatner) begins staging a daring crime wave across Gotham. Batman vs. Two-Face brings back the core Crusaders team, with Rick Morales (Justice League: Cosmic Clash) directing from a script by Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) and James Tucker (Teen Titans: The Judas Contract). Tucker and Jelenic are also supervising producer and producer, respectively. Sam Register is executive producer. Benjamin Melniker and Michael Uslan are executive producers.

Blu-ray and DVD special features include:

    – “The Wonderful World of Burt Ward” (featurette) – Spotlighting Ward’s life away from acting, particularly his many benevolent activities, and his lifelong devotion to the health and welfare of dogs.

    – Adam West Tribute Panel – At the 2017 Comic-Con International in San Diego, a panel celebrated the life and times of West, the legendary “Bright Knight.” Fans laughed, cried and cheered as actress Lee Meriwether (Catwoman from the 1966 Batman movie), director/writer/actor Kevin Smith, actor/radio personality Ralph Garman, producer James Tucker and moderator Gary Miereanu captivated the audience with anecdotes and tales about Adam West.

    – Actors Burt Ward and Julie Newmar discussing various aspects of their lives, ambitions and inspirations.

  • VIZ Picks Up Comedy Series ‘Mr. Osomatsu’ for North & Latin America

VIZ Picks Up Comedy Series ‘Mr. Osomatsu’ for North & Latin America

At Otakon this past weekend, VIZ Media announced at its official panel that it has acquired the rambunctious big-family comedy series Mr. Osomatsu for distribution in North and Latin America. The deal covers digital streaming, EST, home video and merchandise rights for the anime, which debuted its first season in Japan in 2015 and is about to premiere its second in the fall.

Synopsis: Forget double the fun because here’s a series that amps up the insanity six silly ways! The Matsuno sextuplets are quite a bunch. One’s always hanging out at the local Pachinko joint, one un-ironically wears sequined pants, one is a total otaku with a fancy for idols while another brother would rather just loaf around with some cats and his own ennui. The fifth brother loves baseball but was probably dropped on his head a couple times. And then there’s the youngest, who really leans into that sweet baby brother angle, if you know what we mean. None of them have jobs, but they do have one heck of a tab run up at the local Oden stand! With so many brothers with too much time on their hands, there’s sure to be some crazy (and raunchy) adventures!

Based on the classic manga series Osomatsu-kun by Fujio Akatsuka, the anime is produced by Studio Pierrot.

Mr. Osomatsu depicts the hilarious exploits of the sextuplet Matsuno brothers, and each sibling’s unique personality and their fumbling antics will endear them to audiences,” said VIZ Media’s VP of Animation, Brian Ige. “Whether they are attempting to find employment or land girlfriends, the quirky lives of these brothers are never dull! We look forward to announcing more details on Mr. Osomatsu in the coming months and to North American audiences discovering this fun series.”

The Biblical story adaptation is the first co-production of Israel and Hungary, from Cinemon Ent. and Eden Productions. SC will begin shopping the film at the Toronto Int’l Film Festival.

The English-language adventure features an Israeli voice cast and follows a young Solomon in his quest to save Jerusalem from the power-hungry demon Asmodeus, with the help of the beautiful Princess Naama of Petra. The project’s composer is Ady Cohen (musical director, Enchanted), and the art director is Michael Faust (artist, Waltz with Bashir).
