  • Cher Gets Her Boov on in ‘Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh’

Pop icon Cher is embracing her inner animated alien for a guest starring role on DreamWorks Animation Television’s Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh, Hollywood Reporter revealed. The EGOT-winning singer and actor will voice and sing as a new character in an upcoming episode of the Netflix kids’ series, which launches season 3 on Friday.

Cher will be reinvented as “Chercophonie,” the biggest rock diva in Boovsland. An avant-garde girlboy Boov known for her dissonant music and outrageous fashion sense, Chercophonie is so popular that she must maintain a sense of mystery by only going in public in disguise.

The episode will see Tip (voiced by Rachel Crow) become a Boov rock star thanks to her awful guitar playing and some guidance from Chercophonie. But when her playing begins to improve, Tip risks losing fans who hate her “new” sound. Oh (Mark Whitten) helps Tip realize that fame means nothing if your heart isn’t in your work, which inspired Chercophonie to reveal the real passion in life she has kept secret while being an intergalactic rock star as a back-up plan.

Home: Adventures of Tip & Oh is a 2D spin-off from DreamWorks’ 2015 CG feature, Home — based on the children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.

Cher most recently voiced Janet the Lioness in live-action comedy Zookeeper (2011). She won an Oscar for Moonstruck in 1988 and was nominated in 1984 for Silkwood. Other acting credits include Mermaids, Burlesque and Mask.

Disney Takes Over BAMTech, Plans New OTT Services

The Walt Disney Company is acquiring majority ownership of direct-to-consumer streaming specialist BAMTech, with plans to introduce new OTT services which will include an exclusive new US on-demand home for live-action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar. The deal effectively ends the entertainment giant’s agreement with Netflix for SVOD distribution of new releases.

Disney previously snagged a 33% stake in BAMTech from MLBAM, the interactive media and internet arm of Major League Baseball. The company will now pay $1.58 billion to acquire an additional 42%, taking advantage of an option from the earlier deal to acquire a majority stake over several years. An ESPN branded sports streaming service will launch first in 2018, followed by the Disney-branded service in 2019.

“The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech’s full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman & CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “This acquisition and the launch of our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands.”

New Disney-Pixar titles will cease to stream on Netflix starting with the 2019 calendar year theatrical slate. This includes Toy Story 4, the Frozen sequel, and an untitled Disneytoon Studios film about “the future of aviation,” per the studios’ D23 Expo feature films presentation.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. Upon closing, Iger will serve as chairman of the BAMTech board. BAMTech CEO Michael Paull will report to Kevin A. Mayer, Senior Executive VP & Chief Strategy Officer for The Walt Disney Co. The ESPN service will be managed by ESPN President and Disney Media Networks co-Chairman, John Skipper.

  • Netflix Buys ‘Kingsman’ Comic Co. Millarworld

Global streaming service Netflix announced its first acquisition on Monday, having acquired comic-book publisher Millarworld. Launched in 2004 by Scottish comics writer Mark Millar, the creator-owned company is behind popular titles such as Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Wanted — all of which have been turned into major motion pictures. Millar and artist Tony Harris’ War Heroes has also been optioned by Sony.

“This is only the third time in history a major comic-book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

Netflix and Millar will work together to bring the Millarworld comics universe to life in feature films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to the SVOD’s members. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and franchises under the Netflix label. The acquisition marks a major step in Netflix’s progression as an original content producer. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed.

“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee. We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with. We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

Prior to founding Millarworld, which he runs with his wife Lucy Millar, Mark Millar worked for both DC and Marvel Comics. During his eight-year career with the latter, Millar developed the comics and story arcs that inspired the first Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War and Logan.

Rainbow’s ‘World of Winx’ Set for Nickelodeon Greece

Italian producer Rainbow has strengthened its relationship with Nickelodeon Greece by securing spots for two of its top properties: animated hit World of Winx, due in September, and live-action dramedy Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends, debuting Sept. 4 and running weekdays at 10 p.m.

Nickelodeon Greece already airs reruns of Rainbow’s Winx Club on weekdays at 4 p.m. and weekends at 1:30 p.m. throughout the year. The good ratings performance of Winx Club is matched by the success of fairy tale reimagining Regal Academy, the first series of which ran from Oct. 2016 to July 2017 and will rerun beginning later this month.

B-rights, one of the leading licensing agencies in Greece, already represents Winx Club and Regal Academy in the country and will take on Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends and World of Winx.

    Synopses:

World of Winx sees the six fairies familiar to millions from Winx Club travel to Earth to act as scouts for talent show WOW! and search the globe for talented kids. But all is not as it seems, as they soon uncover the evil activity of the Talent Thief – a mysterious and despicable villain who is capturing gifted children! The show has been available on Netflix, where it has been released worldwide, since November 2016. It is also currently screening or about to be launched on Rai Gulp in Italy, TV Zoom in Israel and Karusel in Russia and will be broadcast in a number of other countries in the coming months.

Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends follows the live-action adventures of Maggie and Bianca – two very different girls who meet at the prestigious Milan Fashion Academy. The show follows the themes of fashion, friendship and music and is already an enormous international hit. Nickelodeon Greece joins stations in many other territories, including Italy’s free-to- air channel Rai Gulp, Gulli in France, TV Cultura in Brazil, Karousel in Russia and Disney in Germany, as well as Nickelodeon in Poland and Benelux. Netflix is the worldwide VOD partner for the show. The massive and seemingly unstoppable success of Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends has already led to a third season and two 50-minute TV movies, a live tour and a number of multi-territory licensing deals.

‘Despicable Me’ Now the Top Toon Franchise Worldwide

With Gru’s latest adventure having achieved the No. 10 all-time worldwide chart spot, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me film series (including Minions) has officially supplanted DreamWorks’ Shrek as the highest-grossing animated feature franchise worldwide. Despicable Me 3 has totted up $881.6 million since its June launch (it still has several market debuts to go), bringing the four film global total to $3.528 billion.

The five Shrek films (including Puss in Boots) previously held the top spot with $3.51B. Blue Sky’s Ice Age, also comprising five films, now mosies into the third place spot with $3.2B. The top 5 franchises also include Pixar’s Toy Story and DreamWorks’ Madagascar.

Three of the Despicable Me films are now in the Top 10 worldwide chart for animated features: DM 3 (No. 10), DM 2 (No. 7) and Minions (No. 2, behind Frozen). The key difference between the first film and the sequels is the China market. Despicable Me did not have a theatrical release in the country, but DM 2 made $53M and Minions set a local opening day record for animation. DM 3 has racked up nearly $150M in China, making it the second-highest-grossing animated film in the country ever.

Hasbro Confirms Animated ‘Transformers’ in the Pipeline

Hasbro confirmed during its annual Investor Day announcements that its ever popular Transformers property will get an animated feature makeover, produced by its Dublin studio Boulder Media. According to the report posted to fansite TFW 2005, an initial film will restart the franchise with an exploration of the Transformers’ origins, and will be followed by one animated movie released per year.

In a Q&A session following the announcement, Hasbro further explained that the animated films would take place within the established Michael Bay live-action movieverse. No other details were revealed.

The Transformers are no strangers to animation, with the toy line being adapted into numerous series and feature films. The first big screen adventure was released in 1986, directed by original animated series producer Nelson Shin and featuring an absolutely ’80s voice cast including Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Judd Nelson and Leonard Nimoy — it notably was the last gig for both Orson Welles (who voiced Unicron) and Scatman Crothers (Jazz).

More recently, Transformers: Animated ran on Cartoon Network from 2007-2009, and Hub Network (now Discovery Family) aired Transformers: Prime from 2010 to 2013, when it wrapped up with the CG animated TV movie Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising.

The live-action sci-fi/action films — directed by Michael Bay with the exception of the upcoming Bumblebee which is being helmed by LAIKA’s Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) — began rolling out in 2007. The films are generally praised for their visual effects despite lukewarm critical reactions. Transformers is the 10th highest-grossing film series worldwide. However, the most recent installment, The Last Knight, was released in June with the series’ lowest grossing opening — it has taken in $583.4 million worldwide against a reported budget of $217 million.

  • Wanda Sykes & Portia de Rossi Voice Couple on ‘Doc McStuffins’

Wanda Sykes & Portia de Rossi Voice Couple on ‘Doc McStuffins’

Two of Hollywood’s most famous queer women, Wanda Sykes (Black-ish) and Portia de Rossi (Scandal), made a house call with Disney’s Doc McStuffins this weekend, voicing a couple in Saturday’s installment. Created by Chris Nee and currently in its fourth season, the Peabody Award-winning show is the first on Disney Junior to offer an LGBT-inclused storyline, and the first animated series on Disney Channel to spotlight a family headed by a same-sex couple.

“I always envision Doc McStuffins as a show about what it means to accept everyone as part of our communities. As part of a two-mom family, I’m proud to have an episode that reflects my son’s world, and shows everyone that love is love in McStuffinsville,” said Nee, who wrote the episode.

The high-rating preschool series stars Dottie “Doc” McStuffins who fixes broken toys in her backyard clinic. Titled “The Emergency Plan,” Sykes and de Rossi’s episode features a doll family with two moms who are caught unprepared when a toy dragon creates an earthquake by jumping up and down. When the family gets separated, Doc McStuffins teaches them about how to be prepared in the future. (You can watch it online at watchdisneyjunior.go.com/doc-mcstuffins)

The episode was detailed by GLAAD — the world’s largest LGBT media advocacy organization — at a panel during the Television Critics Association press tour.

“Children like mine deserve the chance to see their families reflected on TV, and this episode does just that in a beautiful and positive way,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD told the org’s blog. “Shows like this reflect our real world, and today that includes the many children being raised by gay and lesbian parents who are all going to celebrate this story.”

Sykes has been announced as a recurring guest voice on Disney’s upcoming animated series Vampirina, which Nee is executive producing. She is no stranger to voiceover work, with recent credits including Ice Age: Collision Course and Continental Drift, Bob’s Burgers and Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero. Less familiar with the recording booth, de Rossi did recently drop into Quahog for a Family Guy gag.

As praise for Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming rolls in, the contributing VFX studios are stepping forward to share the secrets to their incredible CG feats. Award-winning creative studio Luma was tapped by director Jon Watts and VFX supervisor Janek Sirrs to deliver 11 stunning sequences for the Marvel movie, which opened at No. 1 in early July and has totted up nearly $650 million worldwide thus far.

Luma was responsible for key sequences featuring the film’s standout, relatable villain: The Vulture, a regular, street-level guy who turns to crime in order to take care of his family (played by Michael Keaton). The pieces Luma delivered required creating and animating a CG wing-suit that radiated an imposing presence and could match Spidey’s speedy moves.

    Sticking the Landing

In the beginning of the film, “Adrian Toomes” builds his alien technology empire after being fired from his previous blue-collar job. Eight years later, his guns are bigger and badder, he’s grown greedier and his mechanical wing-suit is the size of a small airplane. He makes his first grand entrance into the lab via a door in the ceiling, spreads his wings and swoops onto his platform in a hard landing with the smug boast, “business is good!”

The scene required a full CG Vulture and landing platform with articulated arms. Luma used Vulture’s geometry from two other vendors on the show and incorporated that into their pipeline. “We were aiming to tie the suit and the warehouse into the same world to make it feel industrial and real, but also not as refined of a suit as Iron Man’s. The mood and contrasting raw metals of the wings helped bring Vulture’s suit into the same world as the set,” said CG supervisor Andrew Zink.

To bring the man and his machine to life was a complicated task for the animators. Vulture is a dynamic tank that hovers over the ground, and his two turbines are controlled by exoskeleton arms which act as the sole propulsors, so the amount of RPMs and the angles in which they lean create a push and pull effect. Animators also had to consider his unique wing shape, flight trajectory and predatory poses to perfect his flight and fast landing.

“This is definitely the proudest I’ve been of the crew that I work with. The passion and hard work they put into this film really shows the kind of talented people we have at Luma and how much care about the artistry of their work they have,” said VFX supervisor Brendan Seals.

    Dressing the Vulture

A rookie Spider-Man discovers Vulture’s henchmen selling alien technology to a wanted criminal and chases after their van as he runs through backyards, unapologetically destroying everything in his path (the scene is a parody of the famous Ferris Bueller’s Day Off “The Race Home”). Vulture saves his henchmen by violently swooping in and grabbing Spidey like a real vulture would snag its prey. Vulture then rapidly ascends into the sky at a whopping 208 mph before dropping his catch into a lake.

To create this completely virtual sequence, “animators began blocking with simplistic Google Maps photography and drone photography to work out the aesthetics of what the surroundings would look like,” according to VFX supervisor Kevin Souls.

For Vulture’s character, animators tackled the challenge of animating the hefty wing-suit that, while also making sure it was dynamic enough to fight with a swift and speedy Spider-Man. “We like to ground our characters in real world physics, so our animators use a variety of Luma created tools to track speed, gravity and archs—it’s easier to bend the rules once you understand them,” explained animation supervisor Raphael A. Pimentel.

    Damage Control

Luma also worked on the first big battle between Vulture and Spider-Man, when the young hero interrupts Vulture stealing supplies from the Damage Control truck. Initially tasked with enhancing the sequence, Luma realized early on that it would be easier to recreate the sequence in full CG in order to add camera moves and to work with the portal (the alien technology that allows Vulture to travel through the roof of the truck). Since this was a close-up and constrained fight, animators had to ensure that Spider-Man looked weighty and in control, while also ensuring that the Vulture build was dynamic enough to fight with him.

On top of creating a believable CG supervillain, Luma’s scope of work included creating and animating a full CG Spider-Man for various sequences, the disintegration effect on a henchman character, the ATM sequence, and the “Crime Fighting” sequence where a rookie Spider-Man head outs into the city attempting to stop petty crime.

Luma is currently working on Marvel’s Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok and Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. Learn more at www.lumapictures.com.
