Akkord Conjures ‘Petronella the Apple Witch’ for Film & TV

German animation producer Akkord Film and publisher Boje (part of Bastei Lübbe AG) are planning to enchant audiences through screens big and small with adaptations of best-selling kids’ book series Petronella the Apple Witch. The rights deal was secured at Berlin Film Festival, with Akkord announcing its intent to develop both a feature film and TV series.

From author Sabine Städing and illustrator SaBine Büchner, the first Petronella the Apple Witch book debuted in 2014, and the series has since sold over 250,000 copies in German-speaking countries alone. Comprising four books to-date, the stories are set in an extraordinary world populated by witches, stick men, flying stag beetles and other magical creatures.

“I am very happy that my little witch will soon enchant movie and television audiences. I am so proud of Petronella, and I already look forward to a fruitful creative collaboration with the production team,” said Städing.

The cooperation between Akkor and Boje Verlag was instigated by Hamburg-based producer Maite Woköck, who is set to produce alongside Akkord’s CEO, Dirk Beinhold. The movie adaptation will also be Akkord’s fourth collaboration with screenwriter Katja Grübel. The project is being co-funded by Germany’s FFA.

“For Akkord Film, Maite Woköck is a perfect addition to our team on this big project. She brings a lot of experience from international CG animated feature films. From the first conversations on, we instinctively shared the same vision for this adaptation,” commented Beinhold. “We are very pleased with the opportunity to exploit Petronella the Apple Witch in other media and in merchandising, too.”

Akkord’s previous successes include the Raven the Little Rascal feature films and TV series, and recent European theatrical release Rabbit School – Hunt for the Golden Egg, which premiered at Berlinale.

“2017 is shaping up to be a big year for us, and running the animation strand at Cardiff Independent Film Festival is a huge highlight,” said Lauren Orme, Director of Cardiff Animation Nights. “We’ve expanded our animation competition program for our second year at CIFF and we’re really excited about the incredible selection of films we’re able to screen this year. • ‘Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality’ Launching on April 20

‘Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality’ Launching on April 20

Adult Swim is gearing up to take fans beyond the garage and on to incredible, chaotic adventures with the release of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality on April 20. The multi-dimensional, crazy immersive VR experience from Adult Swim Games and Owlchemy Labs will be available for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets on Steam and Oculus Home for $29.99.

Inspired by the cult-hit animated series, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a fast-paced VR adventure which allows fans to experience the show’s universe in a unique way: by living life as a clone of Morty and enduring all the trauma that comes with it. Users will navigate and rummage through Rick’s garage and the Smith household, handling (and smashing) iconic items like the Plumbus, and stepping through portals to alternate worlds. To survive Mortyhood, players must follow Rick’s directions to solve puzzles and complete missions in room-scale virtual reality.

“It was a privilege to work with the teams at Rick and Morty and Owlchemy,” said Jeff Olsen, vice president, Adult Swim Games. “We could not have asked for a more successful collaboration, or a better way to demonstrate Turner’s commitment to creating innovative fan experiences beyond the series.”

Virtual Rick-ality now joins the ASG lineup of stand-out titles including Robot Unicorn Attack, Pocket Mortys, Duck Game and the upcoming Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove.

“We really believe fans are going to lose their minds at what we’ve developed,” commented Owlchemy Labs CEO Alex Schwartz. “It’s been an incredible experience to develop for one of our favorite shows and see the joy on players’ faces when they get to explore Rick’s garage in VR, physically step through portals, and interact naturally with their hands in the world they’re already so familiar with. Players are interacting with the world of Rick and Morty in a way only possible in virtual reality, and they love it!”

Owlchemy Labs was founded in 2010 and has since developed and published over 20 desktop and mobile titles, including Sundance selection Job Simulator and award-winning games Dyscourse, Jack Lumber, Snuggle Truck and Aaaaaculus! (with Dejobaan).

“The Fresh Princess of Friendship” Lyrics

Now this is a story and it’s not even tragic
about how we all learned that friendship is magic.
And I wanna make sure that there’s nothing I skip
When I’ll tell you how I came to know the Princess of Friendship…
In western Equestria, born and raised,
on the rock farm is where I spent most of my days.
But Ponyville’s where Twilight Sparkle met me,
Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and Rarity.
She wrote one little letter sent to Celestia,
who said, “It’s the friends you have made that have saved Equestria.”
She’s even traveled through time so try not to get weirded
when I tell you that she met Starswirl the Bearded!
She’s got wings and a castle, so don’t even trip
She’s Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship!

Aardman Nathan Love Inspires Life-Saving Action in Animated FEMA Experience

Aardman Nathan Love studio and Ogilvy Washington agency have delivered a distinctly styled choose-your-own-adventure animated video for the new “You Are the Help Until Help Arrives” program from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individual and Community Preparedness Division.

Titled “The Berk’s Wonderfully Happy Day,” the interactive PSA centers on a family whose trip to the amusement park takes a series of dangerous turns, putting viewers in control of making lifesaving decisions for injured park-goers. Despite the serious content matter, the video features playful and inviting animation from Aardman Nathan Love that doesn’t turn the viewer off.

“FEMA aimed to inform people that there were steps anyone could take with no special training to help an injured person even before the paramedics arrive,” said ANL director Ellen Su. “The idea was to create this whimsical world where the characters get into all sorts of crazy incidents. We wanted to entertain and educate viewers on how they could really save lives should they find themselves in similar situations.”

“We are thrilled that Ogilvy came to us with such a fun and exciting idea to convey their educational content. There was a lot of important information that we had to depict and it was definitely a collaboration in getting the characters and story all together.”

“The Berk’s Wonderfully Happy Day” is directed by Ellen Su, with Joe Burrascano as creative director, and James Elio and Frankline Zitter producing.

  • John Legend and Baobab Studios Announce ‘Rainbow Crow’ VR Series

Baobab Studios (the virtual reality company behind Emmy-nominated Invasion! and upcoming Asteroids!) has teamed up with musician, producer and activist John Legend for a new animated VR series inspired by Native American tales, Rainbow Crow. The 10-time Grammy Award winner will be lending his storytelling sensibility to the project as executive producer, and lending his voice to th title character. Legend’s longtime collaborator Ty Stiklorius will also join the creative team.

The first installment of the series will premiere this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City (April 19-29).

“Rainbow Crow brings storytelling and music together in a way no one else has yet in virtual reality. It’s an incredible medium for inspiring a journey of self-discovery and finding your way in times to darkness,” said Legend. “In light of what’s going on in today’s world, it’s a message of deep meaning that people from all walks of life can embrace.”

The story of Rainbow Crow originates with the Lenape, whose traditional territory encompassed and extended beyond the Delaware Valley. The legend tells of a bird with the most dazzling plumage and mellifluous voice who, after the planet turns dark and cold, must journey far from home to bring light back to the world. The series will be narrated by Kiowa-Caddo tribal elder Randy Edmonds, an 82-year-old lifelong crusader for Native American rights and founder of the National Urban Indian Council.

“All Native American tales have a tradition of deep meaning and that’s why we tell the stories, sharing down the generations,” explained Edmonds, who left Oklahoma in 1954 for Southern California as part of the Indian Relocation Act. “When I look at the impact these legends have, the insights they represent, taking that storytelling to a modern medium is extremely exciting. The beautiful VR work being created — inspired by our folklore — is like nothing I’ve ever experienced in my many years.”

Mauren Fan, CEO and c-founder of Baobab Studios, added:

“We all have experienced the emotions that John’s music solicits. He is an incredible innovator across all mediums, from song to film, and now to VR — both in front of and behind the camera. Rainbow Crow is a profound storytelling about perseverance, diversity and acceptance. Not only are the characters diverse, but so is our joint production team. Our shared values and ethos is another reason we’re so excited to work with John and Ty.”

Rainbow Crow’s launch date has yet to be announced. You can follow the project on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • ‘Underdog’ Animator Joe Harris Dies at 89

The advertising artist who brought to life some of the most iconic cartoon characters of the mid-20th century, Joe Harris, died March 26 at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, Deadline reports. Harris was best known for creating the cereal-sneaking Trix Rabbit, and for The Underdog Show he created with Total Television. He was 89 years old.

Harris first put the Trix Rabbit on paper in the 1950s in an ad for the multicolored General Mills cereal, with the phrase “Silly rabbit! Trix are for kids!” — a catch phrase that has been part of the American lexicon for decades.

The illustrator made the move into animation with his writing and producing partners Chet Stover, “Buck” Biggers and Treadwell Covington, forming Total Television in 1959 (later Leonardo Productions) with the aim of creating cartoons that blurred the line between entertainment and kid-targeted advertising. The studio began releasing series in 1960, churning out Saturday morning toons including King Leonardo and His Short Subjects, Tooter Turtle, The Beagles and Tennessee Tuxedo over the next several years.

Total Television’s biggest hit was Underdog, which debuted on NBC in 1964 and followed a mild-mannered pup known as Shoeshine Boy, who transformed into the superhero Underdog in order to come to the aid of his sweetheart Polly Purebred and fend off evildoers like Simon Bar Sinister and Riff Raff.

Harris designed many of the studio’s best loved characters, and also served as a storyboard artist and producer on series. He also worked on the music for several of the shows, and is credited with co-writing the catchy Underdog theme song. Underdog made a come-back in the 2007 live-action Disney movie, for which Harris penned a couple new songs.

Daughter Merrie Harris announced her father’s passing on Instagram, writing “May heaven be a big studio.” Harris is survived by Merrie and her sisters Joelle Malec and Sophie Harris.

  • ASIFA-Hollywood Names First Faculty Grant Winners

ASIFA-Hollywood’s Animation Educators Forum has awarded its first annual Faculty Grants to Owen Klatte (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Dave Mauriello (Drexel University). Announced in January, the competition for the Grants were open to both full- and part-time teachers at accredited post-secondary institutions around the world. The Grants themselves are designed to support individuals or groups with reasonable expenditures for animation research, scholarly activity or creative projects.

Applicants for the inaugural awards came from Asia, North America and Europe, and included educators from China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, France, Canada and the United States. Their proposals covered a variety of original animated projects, scholarly efforts and conference travel requests. The final awardees were decided by the Selection Committee after much consideration.

Owen Klatte, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was given $4,383.50 to fund the production of his 3½-minute stop-motion film, Of Wood. Professor Klatte’s personal film will primarily consist of frame-by-frame filming of the progressive sculpting of a single block of wood; it will show a progression of historical images showing humankind’s use of wood, while decrying the excesses of materialism and mass consumerism. The focus of his project is the exploration of new ways of animating in an unusual medium using an incremental subtractive sculpting technique. Klatte expects to complete the film for submission to film festivals in 2018-19.

Dave Mauriello, from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, was awarded $2,250.00 to fund his travel to this year’s annual conference of The Association of Medical Illustrators, in Austin, TX. Professor Mauriello has been involved in creating a virtual digital heart in collaboration with physicians from the Drexel University College of Medicine; its purpose is to provide a visual anatomical tool for medical students to better understand the cardiac cycle. The rigging techniques he developed and applied to this 3D model are the focus of his conference presentation.

  • Pixar Presenting ‘Cars 3,’ ‘Lou’ & Taste of ‘Coco’ at Annecy

Pixar Presenting ‘Cars 3,’ ‘Lou’ & Taste of ‘Coco’ at Annecy

Friday, June 16 will be a big day for major studio animation at the Annecy festival, with Disney-Pixar presenting special screenings and filmmaker appearances for its latest projects Cars 3, Lou and Coco. The company is also once again highlighting the next generation of creatives with the Disney Art Challenge.

Starting at 10 a.m., the new and upcoming projects will be presented at the Bonlieu Grande Salle. Director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson — who previously collaborated on the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning Toy Story 3 — will be joined by co-director Adrian Molina (story artist, Monsters University) to present first-look footage from upcoming feature film Coco, in US theaters November 22. (Teaser and more info on Coco here.)

Representing the studio’s shorts department, which has turned out acclaimed films like Lava and recent Oscar winner Piper, director Dave Mullins and producer Dana Murray will be in town to present Lou. Opening in front of Cars 3 in US theaters on June 16, the short tells the story of what happens when a toy-stealing bully ruins recess for a playground full of kids. Lou marks the directorial debut of Mullins, whose animator credits include Oscar-winning films Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up and Inside Out.

And Annecy will host the French Premiere of the new feature film Cars 3, directed by Brian Fee (story artist, Cars & Cars 2), produced by Kevin Reher (A Bug’s Life, La Luna) and co-produced by Andrea Warren (Lava). (Trailer and more info here.)

The screening will be preceded by the awards ceremony for the Disney Art Challenge, with prizes presented by Mullins — this 5th edition’s theme was “road trip.” The DAC was started in 2013 by The Walt Disney Company France in partnership with national school network RECA. Three winners selected by jury will receive a grant to to help them complete their training, as well as a certificate and trophy. Over 1,000 French students have participated in the DAC since its inception.

“Recognizing young talent is so important; these up-and-coming artists are the future of our medium. I love seeing the work of these fantastic students and am always inspired by their energy and fresh perspective,” said John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Disney-Pixar and President of the DAC Jury.

Unkrich, Molina, Anderson, Mullins and Murray will also attend a signing session at the Boutique du Festival @ bdfugue, beginning at 1 p.m. And the day will close with a public outdoor screening of Cars on the Pâquier at 10:15 p.m. The flick that introduced the world to Lightning McQueen in 2006 was directed by John Lasseter, and grossed nearly $462 million worldwide. Cars was nominated for two Oscars, and won the first-ever Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival runs from June 12 to 17 (www.annecy.org).
