Annecy Animation du Monde Program Allies with Africa

The vigorously developing African animation industry has opened another international avenue with a the latest MIFA Animation du Monde initiative. The program will support “Animation without Borders” with a first-ever pan-African pitching competition, organized by the Annecy International Animated Film Festival & Market, the African Animation Network, and DISCOP.

“For two years now, the MIFA – Animation du Monde program has enabled us to go out and meet young talents. Most of them have been self-taught, yet they are resourceful, motivated and full of energy. Lacking a local structure (animation school and/or industry), it’s difficult for them to progress, or even just simply exist. Highlighting their work during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market/MIFA is a way for us to help them get the ball rolling,” said Geraldine Baché, Head of Projects MIFA and coordinator of MIFA – Animation du Monde.

Dubbed “Annecy – MIFA PItches Animation du Monde,” the African initiative will comprise two semi-final rounds, coinciding with DISCOP Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire (May 30-June 1) and DISCOP Johannesburg in South Africa (October 25-27). Both events will turn out six projects, with all 12 competing in the Grand Finale at DISCOP Johannesburg for two finalist spots. The top two project creators will receive automatic entry into Animation du Monde 2018 at Annecy, including accommodation and MIFA accreditations.

Projects can be registered for the first round at DISCOP Abidjan through discopafrica.com through May 9, 2017.

In addition to the pitch competition, Annecy/MIFA, DISCOP and AAN will present a skills development program hosted by international experts at both DISCOP markets, called the Annecy – MIFA Animation du Monde – Skills Programme. These will comprise two tracks for animation fundamentals (writing and storyboarding), a series of workshops exclusively for the pitch semi-finalists, and masterclasses which will be open to all DISCOP attendees.

“Annecy/MIFA represents the absolute pinnacle of our craft. Competing in Animation du Monde is the animation equivalent of participating in the Olympics,” said Nick Wilson, Project Manager for AAN. “In Africa, we’ve long held that we have beautiful and unique stories to tell the rest of the world. This is a tangible opportunity to find the very best African animation projects in development, mentor them, and give them an opportunity to compete against their global counterparts whilst telling the world our stories.”

Musical ‘Mice War’ Premiering at Newport Beach Fest

New animated children’s musical The Mice War will open at the 18th annual Newport Beach Film Festival in California on April 22. Created by Grammy-nominated composer and writer David Chesky, the CGI film features a cast of talented Broadway performers bringing to life a kid-friendly cautionary tale.

The Mice War, aimed at children ages 5-11, tells the story of the money-hungry Blue Mice of the North who greedily go to war with the peace-loving Red Mice of the South. The conflict kicks off when the Blue Mice notice that the Red Mice prefer a different color of cheese.

“The moral of the tale is that these mice must learn to accept one another’s differences if they ever hope to succeed as a species,” said Chesky. “This message makes the story meaningful and timely because it teaches children about the absurdity of war and how we have to learn to resolve conflicts peacefully.”

The cast list boasts some of today’s most talented singers and actors, including Tony Award winner Gregory Jbara as the warmonger General Khan, Tony nominee Alison Fraser as Lucy the loveable sea monster, and Rock of Ages star Mitchell Jarvis as the narrator.

The Mice War will screen at the Island Cinema in Newport Beach on April 22 at 11:45 a.m. More information available at www.themicewar.com and www.newportbeachfilmfest.com.

Genius Brands Inks ‘SpacePOP’ Deals in China, UK

Genius Brands Interanational has secureed new content license agreements for its YouTube-driven series SpacePOP with WeKids Asia in China, and for the animated music videos with U Music TV in the UK. With nearly 15 million channels views and 45,000 subscribers since its summer 2016 launch, SpacePOP has also been greenlit for a second season, slated to debut this fall.

These deals follow a recent agreement with Luk Internacional to handle content distribution, licensing and merchandising for SpacePOP in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

SpacePOP demonstrates that music, fashion, fun and adventure are universally appealing to girls, bonding them to a shared experience regardless of where they live or what language they speak,” explained Stone Newman, President of Worldwide Content Sales, Global Consumer Products & Marketing at Genius Brands. “Expanding brand awareness and building the SpacePOP franchise through media partnerships in China, the UK and Southern Europe – we’re successfully building the brand in some of the largest and most influential markets in the world just three months after SpacePop’s initial release in the U.S. The response from licensing partners, retailers and viewers has been incredible, which is why we’re eager to get moving on season two of SpacePOP.”

WeKids Asia has licensed content distribution, licensing and merchandising rights to the property, and will launch a brand program across China this summer. WeKids Founder & CEO Sean Chu says the company plans to replicate Genius Brands’ rollout with “simultaneous launches of music videos, merchandising and the animated SpacePOP series through online streaming video, IPTV, OTT TV, iOS and Android based Apps for mobile and tablet devices throughout China.”

And in the UK, U Music TV has picked up the rights to the original SpacePOP music videos for its popular app platform and, subsequently, its content block airing on Sky TV, FreeSat and FreeView. “Today’s young consumers want to be part of a property’s development, they want to claim responsibility for the popularity of songs, content and consumer products and SpacePOP clearly puts them in the driver’s seat,” said Claire Palmer, CMO, U Music TV. “It may be a unique growth strategy today, but other content developers will be emulating it for years to come.”

A teaser trailer has been released for the latest collaborative project out of Nimble Collective: an animated short film titled Spring Cleaning! by studio Chocolate Soop, which previews the upcoming Sunny & GERD  series. The titular robot duo’s first misadventure will see them tapping the power of an interdimensional portal to clean up … what could go wrong?

Chocolate Soop is the studio banner of illustrator Dacosta Bayley, who was behind the recent “March of Robots” community drawing challenge on Instagram (@ChocolateSoop).  Bayley has been creating professional work across various media since 1995, and is now collaborating with Nimble Collective on the Sunny & GERD animated series.

Nimble Collective is a Silicon Valley startup seeking to revolutionize the animation industry by creating the first cloud-native animation platform, which will allow animators and creative collaborators anywhere in the world to come together to produce new projects.
