  • Whit Richardson Upped to President of Turner LatAm

Joel Whitten “Whit” Richardson III has been promoted to President of Turner Latin America, as announced by Turner International President Gerhard Zeiler, to whom Richardson will report. A 23-year veteran of the company, Richardson was most recently EVP of Distribution for Turner Latin America.

Richardson will now assume executive oversight of Turner’s regional portfolio of general entertainment, kids (including Boomerang and Cartoon Network), sports and free-to-air brands; distribution and ad sales of those brands; the distribution of CNN’s services; and licensing and merchandising activity in Latin America. The largest of Turner’s international divisions, Turner Latin America’s portfolio was once again the highest-rated pay TV offering in the region in 2016 (per Kantar Media).

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead Turner Latin America, and grateful for the confidence of Gerhard and Turner’s executive management,” said Richardson. “The industry is in a time of rapid change, and Turner is uniquely qualified to lead the transformation of the media business in Latin America. We will prioritize collaboration, innovation and change as we move aggressively to position for continued growth and success.”

As EVP of Distribution, Richardson oversaw the company’s pan-regional affiliate sales team. He relocated to Atlanta in 2014 from Buenos Aires, where he was GM of Turner Argentina in addition to his distribution duties. As GM, Richardson was at the forefront of the company’s local expansion from 15 employees in 1998 to approximately 750 today. He played a key role in the acquisition and integration of Imagen Satelital (where he serves on the board) and the acquisitions of Chilevision, Esporte Interativo and CNN Chile.

Richardson joined Turner in 1994 as an Account Executive and was promoted to Sales Manager for the Caribbean and Venezuela in 1995. He went on to serve as Director and Senior Director of Distribution for the Andean and Caribbean countries and cruise ships before moving to Buenos Aires in 1998.

Prior to Turner, Richardson worked in the capital markets division of Société Générale in Madrid. He holds a master’s degree in international business studies from the University of South Carolina, Columbia and a bachelor’s in history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He currently sits on the boards of the Fulbright Commission in Argentina and Village Cinemas Argentina. Richardson was recently named “one of 2016’s 15 most influential media figures in Latin America” by Prensario magazine.

“Whit is a highly respected executive inside and outside Turner. I am delighted that he accepted the offer to become the next President of Turner Latin America. The company will benefit from his leadership skills and wealth of experience, especially as we navigate through a dramatically evolving media- business future demanding dynamic change,” said Zeiler.

“His enduring successes in affiliate sales and marketing, in establishing our Argentina hub as a nationally-respected employer, his sharp mind, strategic approach and process-orientated management, make him the ideal choice to lead our business in Latin America; he has a clear vision of how we adapt the organization to truly become a next generation media provider.”

Turner Int’l & Cyber Group Sink Teeth into ‘Taffy’

Turner International and Cyber Group Studios have teamed up to create a new original animated series, currently titled Taffy, for the broadcaster’s second flagship kids’ channel Boomerang, across international markets. The 78 x 7 comedy will be produced in France in time to join Boomerang’s line-up of shows like Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, Mr. Bean and Grizzy & the Lemmings in Q4 of 2018.

“It is an honor and a thrill for the Cyber Group Studios team of artists and authors to be working alongside the Turner International team to develop a new series for Boomerang and I hope this idea we had — Mike de Seve of Baboon Animation and myself, a couple of years ago — of creating this new slapstick character of Taffy, will become a great addition to the cartoon line up of one of the most prestigious cartoon channels in the world.”

Taffy follows the non-stop, slapstick extravaganza endured by loyal hounddog Bentley when his elderly billionaire owner Mrs. Muchmore takes in an imposter posing as wide-eyed, fluffy angora cat. Each installment sees Bentley try to reveal “Taffy” for the vermin he is – while super-clever Taffy handily frames the dog for every one of his exploits, pillagings and disastrous messes. Whether traveling from Mrs. Muchmore’s luxurious mansion to a five-star cruise, jet-setting international adventures or a visit with the President, wherever these rivals go, mayhem is sure to follow!

“With its classic-look animation style and timeless, slapstick humor, Taffy couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Boomerang,” said Cecilia Persson, Turner’s VP of Programming & Content Strategy Kids EMEA & International Kids Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “We’re very excited to be working with Cyber Group Studios to produce the show, and further our efforts to build Boomerang as a second flagship kids channel with a strong and refreshing pipeline of content.”

NFTS Takes BAFTA Prize, Announces New Diploma

This weekend marked a new triumph for London’s National Film and Television School, as student Anushka Naanayakkara’s graduation film A Love Story was awarded the British Short Animation BAFTA at the ceremony in Albert Hall.

This is the fourth year in a row that NFTS animation students have received the esteemed prize, and the second consecutive year that saw two NFTS students nominated in the category (Jac Clinch’s The Alan Dimension was the other.) Across the awards categories, over 70 NFTS graduates were credited in the nominations.

In addition to Naanayakkara’s big win, NFTS is announcing two new courses for its animation department in 2017: A new Diploma in Model Making for Animation in partnership with renowned British puppet animation studios Mackinnon & Saunders and Aardman Animations; and the return of the Certificate in Character Animation, also in partnership with Aardman.

The 12-month model making diploma course will be lead by industry veteran John Lee, whose credits include modeller on Fantastic Mr. Fox and Frankenweenie, production designer & supervising model maker for John Lewis ad “The Bear & The Hare,” prop maker for Rogue One. Lee also recently worked on Wes Anderson’s current feature production, Isle of Dogs.

“I am no stranger to the NFTS as I have worked as a visiting lecturer for the last nine years with students from Digital Effects, Animation and Production Design, so I am looking forward to fully integrating the course within the School,” said Lee. “Model Animation is an exciting and tactile medium to work in; the attention to detail is exquisite, and as a discipline, gives the modeller and filmmaker complete control of this unique craft.”

The intensive 12-week character animation certificate course — offered in partnership with Aardman and supported by Factory — has an excellent success record, with over 80% of graduates now working in the industry at studios including Aardman, Animortal, Factory, Blue Zoo, Traveller’s Tales and on Isle of Dogs. The 2017 course will run from Sept. 25 through Dec. 15 and be held at Aardman’s Bristol studios.

“Students see huge development when completing this course. We have been incredibly impressed with their output and the way they build their skills – whether it’s animation, acting or understanding of performance – over the 12 weeks,” said Aardman Head of Animation Loyd Price. “Cultivating new talent is incredibly important to us and it will be a pleasure to work with the 2017 intake.”

  • African Animation Network Taps SSTREAMM for MTN Mobile Channel

African Animation Network Taps SSTREAMM for MTN Mobile Channel

The African Animation Network, piloted as The Animation Lounge at DISCOP Johannesburg 2016, is teaming up with Sub-Saharan African mobile video solutions company SSTREAMM to create an AAN channel. SSTREAMM is the owner of PockitTV, a short-form mobile VOD platform, available exclusively through MTN.

“Africa has a population of 1.2 billion people with approximately 115 million TVs but, it is also the fastest growing smart device market in the world,” explained Nick Wilson, Project Manager of African Animation Network. “Africa is a very fragmented broadcast space with over 400 channels. The biggest mobile service provider in Africa is MTN and they have 250 million subscribers.”

AAN will put out a call for content ahead of both 2017 DISCOP Africa events (Abidjan & Johannesburg), offering a non-exclusive license to content suppliers to be part of the AAN channel catalog. Stand-out submissions will be used in a promotional showreel for the channel to be presented at the DISCOP confabs.

An AAN conference is planned for DISCOP Abidjan this year (May 30-June 1 in Côte d’Ivoire), where participating national delegates from across the continent will have a chance to introduce their industry to the larger broadcast community, share insights and discuss challenges and opportunities. The launch of the AAN channel on PockitTV will be a highlight of the conference and will give attendees insight into the platform’s mechanics, long-term strategy, benefits to the African animation industry and revenue opportunities for content providers.

One major development to watch for: AAN is actively pursuing potential sponsors to zero rate mobile data costs, thus allowing free access to the channel and enabling it to offer longer content formats to subscribers.

“We have a robust platform on the single biggest telecommunications infrastructure in Africa. We are excited about creating a platform for the fledgling African animation industry and are looking for animated content across all genres and formats that represent the richness and diversity of cultures on the continent,” said Greg Upton, MD of SSTREAMM and PockitTV.

“Animation is an expensive medium and requires significant access to audience to attract investment. With access to MTN’s enormous subscriber footprint and the potential to reach and carve out an audience for African animation, we could be one step closer to creating a sustainable African animation industry — an industry sustained on our home broadcast territory.”

Caligari Film Wraps ‘Knight Rusty 2’

Following the success of the first feature film outing (which achieved worldwide sales) and TV series (sold in over 20 territories), family entertainment company Caligari Film announces it has completed production of English-language animated feature Knight Rusty 2 – Full Metal Racket.

According to the producer, the humorous, action-fueled project has received very positive criticism for its blend of kid-friendly entertainment and appeal to parents. The sequel’s three-year production involved more than 300 artists and professionals worldwide, and over 15,000 hours of rendering were logged to complete the 85 minute 2D/3D adventure.

    Synopsis:

Scrapland is going broke. As over half the country’s budget pays for the upkeep of King Leadfoot and his Knights, the downsizing options are limited and obvious. Forced into early retirement, Knight Rusty is looking for a new job. In the basement of his Castle he meets a ghost who shows him the unfinished work of his father, an inventor in Scrapland’s former days. When power crazed police chiefs take over the country, Rusty finally accepts that he must do what he was created for: to protect Scrapland and his father’s vision!

Caligari Film is a leader in the German independent animation market, producing film and TV properties including Knight Rusty, Coconut the Little Dragon and Moonbeam Bear.
