Big Bad Boo Expands UNICEF Partnership

Vancouver-based Big Bad Boo Studios is extending its partnership with UNICEF in order to reach more refugee children, in more countries, with additional content. The initial program started in 2016 provided 50,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan with educational materials based on the studio’s animated children’s series 1001 Nights.

The new agreement will expand the program’s reach to 170,000 children in six countries, with Big Bad Boo signing up to supply curriculum materials, animated videos and over 1.7 million books based on 1001 Nights and other properties, including preschool miniseries Lili & Lola. The curriculum materials focus on civic education, with the aim of helping children re-establish normative values.

Big Bad Boo’s sister company Oznoz.com, a streaming platform for educational and multilingual kids’ programming, is also being piloted to provide more content to refugee children in need.

“Our partnership with UNICEF has been one of the most important and gratifying things we have done and the work has become an integral part of our company’s DNA,” said Aly Jetha, CEO of Big Bad Boo. “It’s gratifying to see the direct effect we can have on so many children and hope we can do more in the years to come.”

Big Bad Boo visits camps and community centers that provide refugee support throughout the Middle East, North Africa and Europe several times per year.

“UNICEF is very grateful to Big Bad Boo and The Education Diversity Foundation for this exciting partnership, as children learn best when they are having fun,” said Robert Jenkins, UNICEF Jordan’s Country Representative. “Big Bad Boo’s materials have become an integral part of our education and psychosocial programs with refugee children. Children who have endured extreme trauma are very difficult to reach – Big Bad Boo’s cartoons engage them with humor and their supporting materials are having measurable impact countering trauma, instilling positive social values and providing a sense of hope, all of which are critical for these children.”

1001 Nights, inspired by the classic tales of Shahrzad, currently airs in 80 countries and 26 languages on top channels including CBCB Radio (Canada), Discovery Kids, RTBF (Belgium), PBS Kids, Cartoon Network, ORF, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, Disney, and Gloob (Brazil).

  • ‘Richard the Stork’ Trailer Takes Flight for Berlinale

‘Richard the Stork’ Trailer Takes Flight for Berlinale

This week, Global Screen is presenting its new CG animated family feature Richard the Stork at the European Film Market in Berlin, uncaging the official trailer for the first time. Directed by Toby Genkel (Ooops! Noah Is Gone…) and co-directed and written by Reza Memari, the film stars an orphaned sparrow who grows up believing he is a stork like the rest of his adoptive family — until they tell him that he can’t cut the long winter migration to Africa. To prove his stork-ness, Richard is determined to follow his flock, with a little help from Olga the owl and Kiki the parakeet.

The film is having its world premiere in competition as part of the Generation Kplus section at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 12. Global Screen is handling worldwide sales.

“About 10 years ago, I was sitting in the Munich pedestrian zone, feeding sparrows who were stealing French fries. Suddenly I heard a quack and saw a flight of ducks going south in a perfect V formation. So I started wondering why sparrows don’t fly south for the winter, to Africa. I mean, how unfair!” Memari says in the film’s pressbook interview. “This line of thought made me think of Richard. I immediately saw an image of a sparrow in my mind’s eye, complaining, ‘It’s not fair!’ That was the starting point for the whole story.”

The story is also inspired by Memari’s own experiences growing up in Bavaria after his family fled the Iranian Revolution. “My father always used to tell me to fit in. There’s a lot of that in Richard the Stork – I was the outsider who stuck out because of the way I looked. And just like Richard wants to prove he’s a real stork to his stork father Claudius, I wanted to prove to my dad what I can do. He’s very proud of me now. But he used to think it was a ridiculous idea for me of all people to want to make an animated film. Of course, that just spurred me on even more. Our producer Kristine Knudsen and I thought of ourselves as the cheeky sparrows trying to do the impossible.”

A German-Belgian-Luxembourgian-Norwegian co-production, Richard the Stork had a production crew of 150 to 180 people, according to Genkel. “Of course, it would be great if we could all work under one roof, but the budgets a film like this needs can only be raised as co-productions now. By now, the internet and the software is developed so far you hardly notice the geographic distance. It really doesn’t matter whether you’re in the office next door or in Brussels, for example.”

“The nicest thing about a cross-national project is, that it literally expands your horizon: You can meet all kinds of people with all their different cultural influences and impulses. That suits a road movie like Richard the Stork perfectly, anyway,” Genkel adds.

Richard the Stork is a co-production of Knudsen & Streuber Medienmanufaktur, Ulysses Filmproduktion, Walking the Dog, Mélusine Productions and Den siste skilling. in co-production with Senator Film Produktion, BNP Paribas Fortis Film Finance, Mediefondet Zefyr and Norddeutscher Rundfunk. It is supported by Eurimages, Deutscher Filmförderfonds, Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, Filmförderungsanstalt, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, Kuratorium junger deutscher Film, Tax Shelter of the Belgian Government, Screen Flanders, Film Fund Luxembourg and Norsk Filminstitutt, in collaboration with C MORE and TV2.

‘Antboy’ Franchise Toons Up with Nimbus, Sardine & Attraction

Denmark’s Nimbus Film is joining forces with Montreal-based boutique animation studio Sardine Productions to bring its Antboy entertainment franchise into a new dimension: a fresh animated comedy series. Aimed at kids 6-11, Antboy Animated (52 x 11) will be sold internationally by Attraction Distribution.

Based on the popular book series by Danish author Kenneth Bøgh Andersen (and the three live-action feature films from Nimbus), the series centers on a 12-year-old boy named Perry who is bitten by a radioactive ant and becomes his town’s guardian and superhero, Antboy! While having superpowers is awesome, not being able to tell anyone (except your two best friends) is not. While Antboy gets acclaim for battling giant robots and mutant slugs, Perry has to work on just being himself.

“The interest in Antboy has been great and venturing to new grounds seems like the natural next step in developing the Antboy franchise,” said Nimbus Founder & EP Bo Ehrhardt (producer, The Bridge). “We are now joining a strong team of international partners and talents.”

Antboy launched with three books in 2007, successfully running through to a sixth book released in 2012. The stories are published in Denmark, France, the US, Sweden, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands.

The first Antboy feature film premiered in 2013, and was a success with audiences as well as critics. Antboy: The Revenge of the Red Fury followed in 2015, and Antboy 3 in 2016. On the festival circuit, the trilogy has picked up a number of awards, including the Danish Film Academy Award for Best Children’s Movie. The films are available worldwide (exc. Univ. del Cine Opens Call for TALENT Scholarship in LatAm

Fundación Universidad del Cinema in Buenos Aires has issued a call for submissions for prospective Animation and Multimedia Film Degree students across Latin America to compete for the TALENT Scholarship, an initiative of the university in partnership with regional festivals to help expand training for animation professionals in Latin America.

“The scholarships selection will be based on merit and criteria of artistic, academic and professional quality,” noted Martina Santoro, Coordinator of the degree program (and head of OKAM Studio). “In this first contest the participating countries will be: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico. We hope to extend this call in the future.”

Each country will run its own contest in which it will award one 100% scholarship and three additional scholarships covering 50% of the Animation and Multimedia Degree tuition. The scholarships will be applied to all five years of the degree program for the winning students. Participating judges include Oscar Grillo, Nelson Luty and Jorge R. Gutierrez.

All required documents for the TALENT Scholarship competitions must submitted by Monday, February 13, 2017. The Evaluation Committee’s results will be announced the week of Feb. 20. More information is available here:www.ucine.edu.ar/beca-animacion

The scholarships are made possible with the support of top regional animation festivals: Anima Córdoba (Argentina), Anima Mundi (Brazil), Chilemonos (Chile), Siggraph Bogota (Colombia) and Pixelatl (Mexico).

“Animation is the past and the future of cinema,” said Juan Antin, Director of the program. “From the first experiments like the magic lantern to the latest CGI productions, which surpassed with their technique everything we’ve imagined, there was always the work of multidisciplinary artists and innovative technicians behind them. Because animation is the only discipline that encompasses all the arts: literature, music, acting, the plastic arts and, above all, the cinema.

“That is why it is necessary to have an integral formation, while at the same time protecting individual creativity, while providing the right amount of art, technology and culture. In Latin America we have a lot of talent, with many stories to tell and with a lot of desire to do. That’s why the Universidad del Cine, with its new scholarship program, is betting on local talent, seeking to discover young people prepared to forge the emerging industry of the regional animation. ”

Greenblatt (Chowder), Harvey Beaks stars a big-hearted, big-headed bird-kid (and titular hero) who, together with his impetuous best friends Fee and Foo and the odd assortment of townsfolk in their magical forest home, always manages to find a way out of trouble and ridiculous situations.

In the March 1 premiere, “Rockbark Rocks/Ocean Promotion,” Harvey thinks he’s ready to rock out at his first concert, but is he really ready? Next, when the Lake Spirit gets a promotion, Harvey must convince him that Littlebark is too great of a town to leave.

Wizart Trailers Melnitsa’s ‘Fantastic Journey to Oz’

Just ahead of its presentation at the European Film Market in Berlin, Russian animation studio Melnitsa and distribution partner Wizart have released a brand new trailer for Fantastic Journey to Oz — an animated feature based on the children’s stories written by Alexander Volkov and set in L. Frank Baum’s magical world.

Inspired by the 1963 book Urfin Joos and His Wooden Soldiers, Fantastic Journey to Oz unfolds as the cunning and wicked Urfin plots to rule Magic Land, capturing the Emerald City with his army of wooden soldiers and renaming it “Urfinville.” But his devious plans can’t last, as Dorothy returns to Magic Land just in time to help the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the now-brave Lion save their home by uncovering Urfin’s true identity.

“For a full-length animated feature film, it is highly important to create a simple family story to strike a chord with audiences all over the world. In this field, innovative technologies just help us to meet creative challenges and make the film more exciting and spectacular for the audience. The movie tells us about simple morality and values close to everyone,” said Konstantin Bronzit, an Academy Award nominee (We Can’t Live Without Cosmos) and Fantastic Journey to Oz creative producer.

The film is directed by Vladimir Toropchin (Ilya and the Robber, Prince Ivan and the Grey Wolf), written by Alexandr Boyarsky (The Pooches, Prince Ivan and the Gray Wolf, Three Heroes on Distant Shores), and produced by Anton Zlatopolsky (Flight Crew, Legend No. 17, Stalingrad), Sergey Selyanov (Sheep and Wolves, Three Heroes – 6, Fortress) and Boyarsky. The music is written by Michael Chertischev (Prince Ivan and the Gray Wolf 2, Three Heroes on Distant Shores, Fortress).

Wizart’s distribution division is handling international sales for Fantastic Journey to Oz, which has already been picked up by Shooting Stars (Middle East), BestFilm (Baltics), and distributors in Bulgaria, Australia, UAE and South Korea. Zylo in France has acquired home entertainment rights to the film for France, Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra and Luxembourg.
