‘Moana’ Sets Sail on a Sea of Troubles in New Trailer

Disney has released a brand new trailer for its upcoming seafaring adventure Moana, revealing more of the heroine’s high-stakes journey and the obstacles in her way — like Maui’s ego problem, or a giant lava monster, or the coconut-armor-clad Kakamora pirates! We also get to see more of Moana’s unique relationship with the ocean, Maui’s superhuman abilities, and Heihei the rooster (voiced by Alan Tudyk).

So far, no sign of the giant crab voiced by Jemaine Clement… maybe next trailer?

Moana is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess & the Frog), produced by Osnat Shurer (Lifted, One Man Band), and features music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i. The voice cast is lead by Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, with Jemaine Clement, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk.

    Synopsis:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why.

Moana is about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

NBCU Drops the Axe on 200 DreamWorks Jobs

NBCUniversal has confirmed that DreamWorks Animation — recently acquired by parent company Comcast in a $3.8 billion deal — will see a spate of layoffs, resulting in roughly 200 job cuts across corporate, distribution and consumer products divisions.

According to a company-wide statement issued by Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Jeff Shell, these are “areas where we can fully integrate operations with NBCUniversal.” The takeover was finalized in August, with a new leadership organization (notably, minus former president Ann Daly) that meshes DWA’s businesses into the NBCU chain of command.

The employees made redundant are all in DreamWorks’ main location in Glendale, California. They will be given notice this week and may stay on for several months during the post-takeover transition, according to Shell’s memo.

DreamWorks Animation has about 2,000 employees — following the 2015 layoffs that eliminated 500 jobs in an effort to to staunch a major money bleed following a few less-than-stellar box office performances.

Gwen Stefani’s ‘Kuu Kuu Harajuku’ Premieres on Nick Oct. 3

Nickelodeon has announced that a new animated series from pop star and fashionista Gwen Stefani, Kuu Kuu Harajuku, will premiere exclusively on Nick in the US on Monday, October 3 at 4 p.m. ET/PT, with new episodes each day at four through to Friday, Oct. 7 and fresh premieres from the 26-episode series airing Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. thereafter.

“Partnering with Nickelodeon on Kuu Kuu Harajuku is a dream come true! It’s been incredible to see the Harajuku Girls and the world they live in come to life,” said Stefani. “The artwork is so beautiful and the whole series turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I love that this is an animated series for young girls that celebrates creativity, imagination and individuality. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

Kuu Kuu Harajuku follows the adventures of the musical group HJ5: Love, Angel, Music, Baby and their inspirational leader, G. Despite their superstar talent, HJ5’s manager Rudie, angry aliens, NoFun politicians, hungry monster pets and other obstacles are constantly interrupting their gigs, and they never get to finish a concert — but G and her friends never give up!

In the premiere episode, “Totally Teen Genie,” Angel releases a Teen Genie with attitude and tries to use her three wishes to help HJ5 win a Totally Teen Awards Golden Hoodie. Then, in “Angel’s Flight,” she embarks on a solemn quest to save face after an unflattering picture appears online.

Kuu Kuu Harajuku is based on an original idea from Stefani, inspired by the Grammy-winning artist’s love of pop art and the youth culture and street fashion of Tokyo’s famous Harajuku district. Stefani first created the original Harajuku Girl characters while writing her first solo album, celebrating the creativity and individualism on display on Japan’s most sartorially notorious streets.

The show is co-created and produced by Moody Street Kids (Australia), Vision Animation (Malaysia) and Gwen Stefani, and commissioned by Network Ten with investment funding from Film Victoria (Australia) and MyCreative Ventures (Malaysia). DHX Media, the world’s leading independent, pure-play kids’ content company, handles international distribution for Kuu Kuu Harajuku, and licensed the series to Nickelodeon.

‘Regular Show’ Series Finale Will Be Out of This World

After eight successful seasons, Cartoon Network has announced that JG Quintel’s Emmy-winning animated series Regular Show will shortly embark on its eighth and final season. The endgame will begin Monday, September 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT with the season 8 premiere “One Space at a Time,” with new episodes airing weeknights through January 2017.

Following last seasons’ cliffhanger finale, which ripped The Park off the face of the earth and took Mordecai, Rigby and the crew away with it, season eight will take place entirely in outer space as the blue jay and raccoon buds take on the ultimate intergalactic battle of good and evil — promising that the show’s bittersweet farewell will be entirely out of this world.

“From JG’s original pitch on post-it notes, through eight successful seasons and more than 250 episodes produced, Regular Show has been one of the most original animated series of this generation creating indelible characters and signature comedy mayhem laced with heart,” said Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher. “Our sincere thanks to this talented crew and cast for their incredible dedication, and I’m proud that they all agreed to go up in space together for one hilarious final journey.”

Regular Show has been a fan-favorite on Cartoon Network since it launched in 2010 (when Animag profiled Quintel in that year’s Rising Stars feature). The young show creator first conceived the show while a student at CalArts, and it became the first series greenlit through Cartoon Network Studio’s award-winning Artist Program in 2008. Since then, the long-running adventures of groundskeepers Mordecai (voiced by Quintel) and Rigby (William Salyers), — along with Skips (Mark Hamill), Pops, Benson and Muscle Man (Sam Marin) — has earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program (“Eggscellent,” 2012) and been nominated for five Emmys, also inspiring Regular Show: The Movie which debuted on Cartoon Network in 2015.

“Making Regular Show has been so much fun,” said Quintel. “We got to tell all of the stories we wanted to tell, and making the choice to go out exactly how we want to go out. We’re so proud and excited for people to see how we’re wrapping things up in a big, big way. We’re bringing everything full circle.”
