‘Sausage Party’ Animators Claim Wurst Practices

R-rated CG comedy Sausage Party proved a surprise hit over its first weekend in release, boasting strong box office numbers well over the film’s reported $19 million budget. But animators who worked on the film have spoken up online to say that the production was no party for them.

In the comments section of a piece on the film posted on CartoonBrew.com last week, anonymous persons related that co-director Greg Tiernan cut costs by demanding unpaid overtime of the animators at Nitrogen Studios.

“If you wouldn’t work late for free your work would be assigned to someone who would stay late or come in on the weekend. Some artist were even threatened with termination for not staying late to hit a deadline,” commenter “Uncredited Supervisor” posted.

Co-producer Annapurna Pictures apparently stepped in to insure better treatment after receiving a petition from the animation department, but, “Over 30 animators left during the coarse (sic) of the production due to the stress and expectations. Most of them left before the paid overtime was implemented. This was met with animosity and was taken as a personal insult to the owners. Their names were omitted from the final credits despite working for over a year on this film.”

Another poster “Uncredited Animator” did not address the mistreatment of employees, but shared that they had to leave the production due to visa issues.

“…After watching it the other day I was very impressed how everything came together and how good it looked. Feeling super proud to be a part of this groundbreaking project. The awe & excitement (sic) quickly turned sour after the credits had rolled with my name not showing up … Through emails towards the end of my contract, I felt I left on good terms with the studio. Apparently not.”

In a follow-up piece, The L.A. Times spoke with artists who remained on the production who felt that the departing employees jumped ship looking for bigger gigs at the newly relocated Sony Pictures Imageworks.

“A big, shiny studio rolled into town just as animation for Sausage Party was gearing up, and offered more money,” editor Ellery Van Dooyeweert told the paper. “They left their friends and teammates behind scrambling to keep the project together. Most animators left believing Sausage Party would never finish, and would be a garbage flick. Now that it’s the talk of the town, they are wondering where their credit went.”

Nitrogen Studios Chief Executive Nicole Stinn refuted the accusations, saying the claims are “without merit” and that the production followed regulations as well as contract obligations.

  • Australian Kids Media Consumption Up

    Australian Kids Media Consumption Up

Cartoon Network’s annual research study into children and parents, “New Generations 2016,” has found that kids’ media consumption in Australia has increased over the past year, with total spending power rising to A$1.8 billion annually. Kids’ pocket money is up 7% from last year, including gift money, for a pre-tyke average of A$556 a year.

“This year, the theme of the study was ‘connecting with kids’ and it was interesting to see that, even as children are creating their own online video content, and despite the popularity of social media, TV ads are still significantly more effective for reaching them,” said David Webb, Director of Research at Turner Asia Pacific. “Also, that regardless of the platform, relatable and humorous content generally cuts through and resonates with young audiences – a demographic with considerable purchasing influence.”

The report shows that TV ads are still the most effective means of reaching kids, with TV time remaining the top media consumption activity for youngsters. In the last month, 92% of Australian children watched TV (up 8%) with most tuning in for cartoons. The report also found that kids prefer comedic ads featuring characters, with Captain Risky (Budget Direct) the most-liked ad for kids, followed by Unicorn Pooping (Squatty Potty) and McDonald’s.

Kids are three times more likely to find TV ads funny compared to social media spots, and are twice as likely to notice TV ads over social ads. 58% of parents surveyed said TV was the most influential platform for kids.

Despite TV’s continued dominance, online video consumption (and creation) among children is up 33%. Kids are also more connected than ever, with 86% getting online in the past month — up 12%. Facebook remained the number one social platform, though they spend more time per day on Snapchat. Nearly a third of Snapchat users spend 1.5 hours a day on the app, compared to a quarter of Facebook users. Social media use also increases dramatically with age, multiplying by five times between kids 7-19 and 13-year olds. Parents are unsurprisingly the most concerned for their kids safety when it comes to YouTube and Facebook, placing the most trust in TV.

New Generations: Connecting with Kids marks the study’s 12th year. Over 1,000 individuals (children aged 4-14 and their parents) were surveyed to gain insights into kids’ media habits and trends.

  • CBC Kids Content Director Martin Markle Exits

Martin Markle, Senior Director of Children’s Content for Canadian public broadcaster CBC Television, has vacated his post after less than a year on the job, Kidscreen reports. Markle had taken on the job last September, taking up the mantle Kim Wilson had worn for 10 years.

In between Wilson’s April exit and Markle’s return to CBC, the kids content duties were handled by CBC’s GM of programming Sally Catto. Markle’s duties had included overseeing the development and production of all Kids’ CBC content for linear and digital platforms, as well as spearheading the rebrand to CBC Kids set for this winter.

Markle previously served as executive in charge of production for children and youth programming at CBC from 2003 to 2006, overseeing original CBC kids comedies from development through delivery. He then went independent with Markle Productions, which was involved with Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans and produced original hybrid kids’ series JiggiJump.

CBC’s head of public affairs confirmed Markle’s move-out; a “transition plan” will be decided upon shortly that will guide the division through to new leadership in the next couple months.

‘Sausage Party’ Earns Sizzling No. 2 Opening

Moviegoers apparently had an appetite for irreverent, adult animation over the weekend, as Sausage Party managed to score the No. 2 box office slot for its opening run, beating low studio expectations and being beaten out only by Suicide Squad.

Produced by Canadian animation house Nitrogen Studios, Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures and Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures, the R-rated Columbia release took in $33.6 million (including $3.2m from Thursday night) from 3,103 theaters. Sausage Party was reportedly budgeted at $19m.

Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad came in at No. 1 in its second week, earning $43.7m but dropping 67.3% from its opening. Disney’s live-action hybrid remake of Pete’s Dragon opened in third place with an estimated $21.5m, despite receiving good reviews from critics ahead of its 3,702-theater release. Pete’s Dragon also opened in 12 international territories this weekend, for an extra $5.1m from Russia, Italy, U.K., et al.

In other animation box office news, Disney-Pixar’s Finding Dory has just surpassed Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in the all-time domestic chart, arriving at No. 7 with $476.8m, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

NFB VR Works Slated for POP 03 in Toronto

The National Film Board of Canada is bringing together a slate of six virtual reality and immersive media productions for Toronto’s POP 03 installation, running August 19-21 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The pop-up exhibition showcases new approaches to storytelling, and is presented by the Toronto International Film Festival in collaboration with NFB.

The selection includes five VR experiences as well as a groundbreaking “film-generating installation.”

Way to Go from AATOAA studio’s Vincent Morisset, Philippe Lambert, Édouard Lanctôt-Benoit and Caroline Robert is an immersive journey through the woods that combines hand-made animation, 360-degree video capture and music. Produced by Hugues Sweeney for NFB’s French-language Interactive Studio in Montreal and by Boris Razon for France Televisions, Way to Go is the winner of three Webby Awards and marks Morisset’s second collaboration with the NFB, following his 2011 interactive animated film BLA BLA.

Munro Ferguson’s VR animated film Minotaur takes a journey through seven stages: birth, childhood, mission, labyrinth, monster, battle and death/rebirth. Through abstract moving images, Minotaur conveys corresponding emotional states: calm, love, joy, surprise, fear, anger/hate, and death/rebirth, leading again to calm. Canadian composer Kid Koala’s score accentuates the hero’s quest for redemption. Winner of a Genie Award for his 3D animated short Falling in Love Again, Ferguson is a leader in developing new creative applications for IMAX’s Sandde hand-drawn stereoscopic animation system. The VR producer of Minotaur is Jelena Popovic, with Michael Fukushima as executive producer for the NFB’s Animation Studio.

Also on tap are Loïc Suty’s The Unknown Photographer — a surreal documentary/dreamscape experience exploring the work of a forgotten WWI photographer (Turbulent/NFB); the Beta for Vincent McCurley’s immersive VR experiment Cardboard Crash (NFB Digital Studio); and the 360 VR documentary Cut-Off, which places viewers in the middle of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s historic visit to First Nation site Shoal Lake 40 (VICE/Occupied VR/NFB/Canadian Film Centre). Forging new ground in interactive storytelling is Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson’s Seances, which allows viewers to “conjure” their own films by selecting text fragments on a 55-inch touch-screen, summoning a collaged story of dynamically reassembled lost films.
