Jam Filled Eyes Arc Productions Buy

Following the dramatic closure of Toronto animation studio Arc Productions, Jam Filled Entertainment (itself recently acquired as a subsidiary of Boat Rocker Media) has moved to acquire “substantially all of the business” of the shuttered toon house.

Arc closed suddenly on July 29 and has since entered receivership under the control of Deloitte Restructuring. The studio has held and holds contracts to deliver animation for a number of projects, including Mattel Creations’ upcoming TV movie Thomas & Friends: The Great Race, Zodiak Kids’ Kody Kapow (Sprout, 2017) and the Amazon Studios pilot Lost in Oz.

The deal, according to Playback, was revealed in a memo sent to Arc staff by Deloitte, which stated that the receiver hopes to close the deal within the next two weeks and that Arc’s activities can resume under new ownership with “limited disruption.” It was left vague how many of Arc’s 500 employees may be affected by the takeover, but Deloitte made a point of saying that the buy will depend on “sufficient acceptance of offers of employment or engagement by the former employees of Arc to permit the continuation of key projects.”

If it goes through, the deal will significantly grow Boad Rocker’s animation business. In the past year, the company has acquired Jam Filled in Ottawa, Radical Sheep, and made a minority investment in Industrial Brothers in Toronto — Boat Rocker Animation’s partner on Dot. The parent company was formed in February by Temple Street Productions.

  • eOne Rejects Billion Pound ITV Bid

eOne Rejects Billion Pound ITV Bid

International production and distribution company Entertainment One (eOne) has rejected a takeover offer from U.K. broadcaster ITV, which had bid about 1 billion GBP ($1.3b USD). In its initial statement to shareholders, eOne said it had rejected a preliminary proposal from an unidentified party because it “fundamentally undervalues the company and its prospects.” eOne later confirmed the bidder to be ITV.

The aspiring owner had offered 2.36 GBP per share ($3.07 USD), valuing the company at 1.03 billion GBP. The broadcaster said this offer represented “a significant premium over the undistributed eOne share price, prior to the impact of recent bid speculation.” ITV went on to state that a key part of its strategy to add value is to build a scaled international content and distribution business, with a focus on U.S. scripted content.

eOne experienced a drop in share prices last December, but has rebounded since, with shares seeing a bump as a result of the news of the ITV offer. The takeover had been rumored since earlier this year. The company’s annual figures announced in May were helped by its TV activities (notably the success of animated series Peppa Pig).

eOne currently has offices in Toronto, Los Angeles and London, and has been pursuing an aggressive growth strategy over the last couple years. Recent acquisitions include Peppa Pig producer Astley Baker Davies and The Mark Gordon Company.

On ITV’s end, the broadcaster has been on a shopping spree, scooping up Twofour, Mammoth Screen and Talpa Media in the last year and change. Previous acquisitions include Leftfield Pictures, Gurney Productions, High Noon Entertainment, Thinkfactory Media and Diga Vision.

Exclusive Clip: ‘The Little Prince’ Now on Netflix

At long last, audiences in the U.S. can experience the artistic triumph that is Mark Osborne’s feature adaptation of The Little Prince, thanks to Netflix. In case you needed further convincing, the streaming service has granted us the royal favor of a special clip from the film, which introduces us to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic character and the new faces introduced by the movie.

The Little Prince builds on the classic novella’s world by introducing a young girl (voiced by Mackenzie Foy) as the movie’s protagonist. The girl’s mother (Rachel McAdams) is focused on preparing her daughter for the pressures and responsibilities of the grown-up world, but thanks to a kindly and eccentric old man known as The Aviator (Jeff Bridges), the girl’s eyes are opened to the wonders of childhood through his tales about The Little Prince (Riley Osborne).

The English voice cast also features Marion Cotillard, Paul Rudd, James Franco, Benicio Del Toro, Ricky Gervais, Bud Cort, Paul Giamatti and Albert Brooks. You can read more about the film in Animation Magazine‘s feature story from the March issue.

‘Lastman’ Turns to Kickstarter to Complete Season 1

The production team of Everybody On Deck have been hard at work on the animated adaptation of Lastman, but have hit a bump in their funding road. Based on the comic-book by Balak, Vives & Sanlaville and billed as the first French animated TV series for adults, the 26-episode Lastman project is seeking funding through a Kickstarter campaign to produce the last 12 episodes — so far it has secured funding for three through the crowdfunding push.

Lastman has been a challenging passion project for Paris-based Everybody On Deck, which met resistance to the idea of producing mature-audiences series animation. It seemed like many problems had been solved when a major investor came on board, but according to the studio the deal was scrapped due to the “Kafkaesque maze of audiovisual policy in France.” Everybody On Deck is now living up to its name by making a drive to finish the series by its deadline despite funding gaps.

The series is set before the events of the Lastman comic-book (published by First Second in the U.S.), with a hand-drawn digital style reminiscent of Japanese anime. Full of fighting, gangsters and paranormal activity, the series centers on Richard Aldana — a cunning young man who is also a talented amateur boxer. When his friend Dave, the owner of the boxing gym, is killed, Aldana becomes the protector of his orphaned daughter, Siri. As Aldana and Siri look into Dave’s past to try to uncover why a terrible religious sect known as The Order of the Lion wanted him killed, they get drawn into a mythic quest.

Lastman is produce by Everybody On Deck with animation by Je Suis Bien Content (Persepolis, April and the Extraordinary World), directed by Jeremie Perin. Balak, one of the three comic-book authors, is the main screen writer. Learn more about the project and the creative team at lastman.tv.

The series currently has only one financing partner on board, France Televisions’ France 4, and has budgeted the project at 25,000 EU per episode, which it is seeking to raise through a series of “stretch goals” on the Lastman Kickstarter campaign.

Aussie Pre-K Show ‘Kazoops’ Comes to NorAm Netflix

A new preschool TV series from Australia-based producer Cheeky Little Media called Kazoops will make its U.S. and Canadian debut on Netflix on September 2. Having launched this summer in the U.K. and Australia, Kazoops will be available on Netflix in North America in a bumper 19-minute format (three seven-minute episodes), comprising seven episodes for season one. An additional 19 episodes will arrive in early 2017.

Kazoops follows the adventures of six-year-old Monty and his best friend, Jimmy Jones, the family pet pig. Monty uses his vivid imagination to challenge preconceptions about life, like “you have to wear matching socks” or “all games need rules,” demonstrating to young viewers the value of critical thinking and creative play.

In each episode, Monty and Jimmy Jones enter make-believe worlds — from a trip to the savannah to an undersea voyage in a submarine. Each adventure is set to a unique two-minute song, with a rich variety of musical styles covered throughout the series.

The CG-animated show is designed to emulate Claymation. The digital characters have the appearance of Plasticine figures, down to the appearance of thumbprints on their “skin” surfaces. The imaginary sequences also integrate 2D graphic elements to create worlds that look hand-crafted out of simple materials.

  • ‘Kubo’ Pop-Up Exhibit Set for JANM

‘Kubo’ Pop-Up Exhibit Set for JANM

On Friday, August 19, Focus Features will release the latest stop-motion flick from award-winning animation studio LAIKA: Kubo and the Two Strings. Ahead of the release, a special pop-up exhibit “The Artistry of Kubo: A Magical LAIKA Experience” will set up at the Japanese American National Museum, located in Downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo neighborhood.

Open August 13-30, the exhibit is a behind-the-scenes experience featuring puppets, sets, props, origami and costumes from the production, awaiting visitors in the JANM’s George & Sakaye Aratani Central Hall. Both traditional and digital interactive installations will introduce attendees to the artistry and technical craft behind the film, with displays set in custom-made environments.

“This film expresses the respect and admiration all the artists at LAIKA feel for Japan and its culture, and I’m thrilled to be able to bring our art to JANM’s visitors. The museum is one of the artistic treasures of Los Angeles, and it’s an honor for us to be part of their service to the community,” said Kubo‘s director and LAIKA’s President & CEO, Travis Knight.

“My own introduction to Japan started over 30 years ago, when I accompanied my father on one of his business trips there. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and from the moment I set foot in Japan, it was like I’d been transported to another world. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. It was beautiful, breathtaking, almost otherworldly. The architecture, the art, the food, the style of dress, the music, the movies, the television shows, and comic books: everything was a revelation. I was utterly in its thrall. I arrived back home changed by the experience. My childhood introduction to Japan was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with a great culture, one we wholeheartedly pay tribute to with this lovingly hand-crafted film. LAIKA is proud to salute George Takei with this exhibit and to showcase how the exquisite, transcendent art and culture of Japan has so profoundly impacted our lives.”

Actor and human rights activist George Takei — who is also Chairman Emeritus of JANM and a member of its board of trustees — will take part in a special ceremony on August 25 to present the puppet of the character he voices to the museum. The “Hosato” puppet will be part of a retrospective of Takei’s life and career that will open at JANM next year. In the film, Hosato is a village elder who helps children understand Obon, the traditional honoring of deceased ancestors.

Taking a cue from origami paper folding, which was a key artistic influence on Kubo, the exhibit will feature a framework of “unfolding moments” within a linear, geometric architectural space. From a distance, it will appear as one large sculptural installation, but a closer look will reveal specific settings and moments from the film. LAIKA’s intensive research into Japanese culture and art will also be worked into the exhibit. The “East+West” section will pay tribute to Japanese culture as interpreted by LAIKA’s over 400 artists and technicians from around the world.

‘StoryBots’ Premiere on Netflix August 12

After racking up more than 400 million online views for their short-form videos, JibJab Bros. Studios’ Ask the StoryBots will debut on Netflix on August 12. The original series inspired by the web video and books brand will feature a voice cast led by Judy Greer (Arrested Development, Archer) with guest roles performed by Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Leno, Weird Al Yankovic and more.

The series centers on the StoryBots, curious little creatures who live in the world beneath our screens. In each episode, the intrepid quintet of Beep, Bing, Bang, Boop and Bo go on an adventure to the human world to help answer kids’ biggest questions, like, “Why is the sky blue?” or “Why do I need to brush my teeth?” They deliver their answer at the end of each episode in the form of a musical video (an homage to Schoolhouse Rock).

Launched in 2012, StoryBots is the brainchild of the brothers behind eCard and satire video sensations JibJab. In subsequent years, over a million families have created StoryBots accounts, and the mobile app has been downloaded over 4 million times. This year the brand expanded into schools with the free StoryBots Classroom platform for teachers, with StoryBots content and Common Core-aligned games.

Each half-hour episode blends animated StoryBot segments with live-action appearances by special celebrity guests. The premiere six episodes launching on Netflix in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia are: “How Does Night Happen?” with Jay Leno, “How Do Airplanes Fly?” with Kevin Smith, “Why Do I Have to Brush My Teeth?” with Whoopi Goldberg, “Why Is the Sky Blue?” with Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci (Garfunkel & Oates), “Where Do French Fries Come From?” with Weird Al Yankovic, and “Where Does Rain Come From?” with Tim Meadows and Chris Parnell.

    Rockwell Museum Hosts Hanna-Barbera Exhibit

The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts will pay tribute to the driving force behind latter 20th century cartoon powerhouse Hanna-Barbera with a new exhibition, “Hanna-Barbera: The Architects of Saturday Morning,” on view November 12 through May 29, 2017. The show celebrates the artistic legacy of series including The Yogi Bear Show, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest and Scooby-Doo.

“We are happy to present the first museum exhibition on the work of Hanna-Barbera,” says Jesse Kowalski, the Museum’s Curator of Exhibitions. “This show will provide a comprehensive look into the animation team that collaborated for more than 60 years. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, with a team of the most gifted animators and writers in the business, created thousands of memorable characters over the years. They brought animation from the theater into the home, forever changing the landscape of American television and popular culture.”

“Hanna Barbera: The Architects of Saturday Morning” will focus primarily on the golden years of the studio—from the premiere of their first cartoon, The Ruff and Reddy Show, in 1957 and The Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958 to the debut of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in 1969. Hanna and Barbera’s early work on Tom and Jerry will be explored, in addition to the scores of TV and film animation and live-action projects created by the studio between 1970 and 2005. Included within the exhibition will be original animation art, sketches, model sheets, photographs, archival materials, toys and other commercial products, videos, and an interactive installation that will draw from the vast library of sound effects created by Hanna-Barbera.
