Millimages’ 104 x 3’30” non-dialog animated series Molang has made a successful debut in the U.S. through the Disney Junior App. Since its premiere a few months ago, 35% of Kids 2-5 in the country have seen at least one episode of Molang, with viewers watching an average of 20 shorts. A second season is in production to be completed by Q4 this year.
Based on the pudgy bunny character made popular as an instant messaging sticker, Molang follows the eccentric, enthusiastic rabbit and his shy, emotional little chick pal PiuPiu on their humorous everyday adventures.
The series is co-produced by Canal+ France and has sold in over 140 countries to top broadcasters including Disney (U.S., LatAm, Italy, Asia Pacific), Cartoonito (U.K.), Tele Quebec and BBC Kids (Canada), Nordic free TV channels (SVT, MTV3, NRK), Mini+ Poland, Hop! (Israel), OKTO (Singapore), PTS (Taiwan), PBS Thailand) and more.
Molang’s licensing and merchandising program is also growing, with Licensing Works! announced as the property’s North American licensing agent. Master toy and master edding partners have signed and will be announced soon. Products will begin arriving in NorAm in the Fall of 2017, and Millimages Consumer Products is negotiating a number of categories for U.S./Canada and other regions.
Here’s Why Hasbro Just Bought an Animation Studio
Fortune dishes the details on the potential opened up by the acquisition of Boulder Media announced yesterday, with Hasbro planning feature films and additional animated content based on its brands.
Turner Asia Pacific and Globe Telecom — the Philippines’ No. 1 mobile brand — have announced that two upgraded Cartoon Network apps will soon be made available to Globe customers. An authenticated version of Cartoon Network Watch and Play unlocks its full functionality, including a live-stream of the channel and additional VOD content. And Cartoon Network Anything will be bundled, showcasing the best short-form CN content on mobile devices.
“Cartoon Network Anything and Cartoon Network Watch and Play are two of our most popular apps with very good reason. They capture the best of the Cartoon Network brand and deliver captivating content – games, video and quirky quizzes – across mobile devices,” says Phil Nelson, Turner’s Managing Director for Southeast Asia. “Offered to Globe customers, these products provide a convenient avenue for Filipinos to enjoy the most popular kids’ content wherever they are, and in a safe and flexible way.”
Globe’s Chief Commercial Officer Albert De Larrazabal adds that the company is looking forward to the many possibilities of the partnership, and that Globe customer can “expect more good news from Globe and Cartoon Network” moving forward. Cartoon Network is the Philippines’ No. 1 kids’ channel, and also ranks as a top 5 channel across all genres in the country this year.
Acamar Films is launching the first app based on its award-winning TV series, Bing. Produced by Acamar and co-developed with the digital team at Aardman, the new app Bing Baking is designed to encourage creativity and curiosity through play.
This is the first in a series of planned digital content aimed at preschoolers and their guardians, and will be available on all mobile platforms, starting with iOS July 14. Google Play and Amazon versions will pop up August 11, with Android launch TBA.
The game invites children to jump into the show’s world by playing alongside Bing and Flop in their kitchen. From the official release:
For preschoolers baking is precious shared time with a grown-up; it is a blend of tactile creativity, chemistry, alchemy and art. Bing Baking gives Bingsters the freedom to make their own choices. Alongside Bing and Flop, in their lovely kitchen, little ones can roll the first ever realistic “digital dough” neatly with a rolling pin or squish it with their hands; choose from a variety of biscuit cutters and tap Flop to put their biscuits in the oven; keep an eye on Chicky Timer to let Flop know when it’s time to take the biscuits out; decorate them their own way with lots of icing, sprinkles, chocolate drops and fruit; take a photo of Bing and Flop with their creations; and finally eat their own yummy-delicious biscuits with Bing – nom nom nom!
“Working with Acamar to bring Bing to interactive life has been a special thing indeed,” says Aardman’s Finbar Hawkins, creative director for Bing Baking. “Our two companies share a heartfelt passion for quality and precision in the crafting of children’s entertainment. We were delighted that Acamar embraced our ‘sandbox’ ideas for the app, meaning that together we’ve created an immersive and tactile environment for young bakers to have fun, learn and play.”
RealD has acquired the technology and assets of Tessive, a leader in motion image processing. RealD will use Tessive’s proprietary software to launch RealD TrueMotion, a new production tool able to correct imperfections in motion capture like the “wagon wheel effect” and choppy “judder.”
“For over 10 years RealD has delivered state-of-the-art technology from capture to delivery in order to achieve the best visual experience possible for moviegoing consumers. RealD TrueMotion perfectly complements existing RealD technologies that enhance the overall cinema experience,” said Michael V. Lewis, Founder and Chairman of RealD.
In addition to TrueMotion and RealD TrueImage — which removes defects, noise and artifacts in individual frames and enhances visual crispness — the company is introducing the Ultimate Screen to market. At CineEurope last month, exhibitors and studios got to check out how this revolutionary achievement in engineered screen technology heightens the moviegoing experience in both 2D and 3D.
Tessive founder Tony Davis will join RealD as a Senior Scientist working in the company’s Research and Development division. Davis will continue to lead development of the software for a wide variety of potential uses including HDR and VR.

Zodiak Kids has brought Just Play on board as Master Toy partner for animated series Floogals in the U.S. and Canada. Earlier this year, Brand Activation Consulting — who secured the deal — was named the consumer products agent for Floogals in the U.S. The agency is headed by Bob Traub and Michelle McLaughlin.
Floogals (52 x 11) launched on NBC Universal’s Sprout network earlier this year. The series has also sold to Discovery Kids Latin America (which also handles licensing rights in the region), TVO and Knowledge Network (Canada), Hop! (Israel), Spectrum Film (Indonesia), RTV (Malaysia), YLE (Finland), Canal Panda (Portugal) and MBC (Middle East).
Based on an original idea from Dan Good, Floogals blends photoreal CG and live-action to follow a trio of pocket-sized aliens named Fleeker, Flo and Boomer on their mission to observe, experience and document the exciting new world around them: planet Earth! From their home planet of Floog, the Floogals arrive on the peculiar world of “hoomans” and try to keep their presence a secret while discovering the wonders of our big, baffling world from their four-inch-high perspective.
The series was developed by Zodiak Kids Studios UK in conjunction with UK special effects studio Jellyfish PIctures and Nevision Limited, who are the strategic investment partner in the series. Zodiak Kids owns worldwide distribution and licensing rights.
The nominations for the 2016 Prime Time Emmy Awards are in, with few surprises in the running this year — at least where animation is concerned. Fox TV / FX series nabbed three out of five slots for Outstanding Animated Program, while Cartoon Network / Adult Swim shows dominate the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program category with four out of five nods.
The Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance contenders are slightly more varied, with Comedy Central’s South Park and Crackle’s SuperMansion both receiving two nominations, with Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane making number five. MacFarlane’s Family Guy roles have been nominated in this category three times, and he took the prize in 2000 for playing Stewie.
Out of favorite VFX showcase series, Games of Thrones triumphs once again getting the most nominations of all with 23 — including, of course, Outstanding Special Visual Effects, in which category it is up against Black Sails, The Man in the High Castle, Penny Dreadful and Vikings. The nominees for Visual Effects in a Supporting Role are Better Call Saul, 11.22.63, Hannibal, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride and The Walking Dead.

The acquisitions is the latest step in Grom’s aggressive growth strategy for its “by kids for kids” social network. Top Draw, based in Manila, is a leading producer of 2D animation for TV markets around the world. The studio is recognized by producers and broadcasters as a provider of quality television animation, and currently provides services to many high-profile properties, including My Little Pony, Tom and Jerry, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

By joining forces with Grom Social, we will achieve that goal and set the stage for strong growth within both the traditional television animation sector and new animated content for digital media. Dearing further stated, “With more than 500 employees based at its headquarters in Manila, TDA is a strong contributor to the local economy and an advocate for harnessing artistic talent in the Philippines and exporting their work to countries around the world. By the combination of these two entities, Grom Social will be able to benefit from TDA’s ‘best in class’ animation for its original content, while TDA will now be able to deploy the creative auspices of Grom Social to build its library of shows for online, for mobile, and across all platforms.”
