Hasbro Acquires Dublin Studio Boulder Media

Hasbro, Inc. announces that it has acquired Boulder Media, a multi-award winning animation company based in Dublin, Ireland. Boulder has produced a number of acclaimed series for top broadcast partners Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney (Wander Over Yonder) and BBC (Go Jetters, Danger Mouse), and will continue to produce series on behalf of third-party clients as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hasbro.

The deal closed July 13; terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“As one of the largest independent studios producing animation in Hollywood, the time is right for Hasbro to acquire its own animation studio, allowing us to expand our animation and storytelling capabilities even further,” said Stephen Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, Hasbro. “In Boulder, we have found one of the most progressive, innovative and creative teams in the business. We are thrilled to partner with Rob Cullen, Pete Lewis, Jenni MacNeaney and the entire Boulder team as we significantly enhance the execution of our story-led Brand Blueprint strategy.”

In February of this year, Hasbro was ranked No. 3 on Fast Company’s list of “Most Innovative Companies in Hollywood.” The company is on track to build on this independent success by expanding its TV and feature film animation possibilities through the Boulder acquisition.

Founded in 2000 by creative director Robert Cullen, Boulder is one of the fastest-growing animation studios in Ireland, with roughly 150 full-time employees. The studio will retain its brand, and report into Stephen Davis, who leads Hasbro’s entertainment and consumer products licensing division.

“Boulder and Hasbro have ambitious plans for growth, and working together, we will substantially expand our team and our business,” said Cullen. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring to life the Hasbro stories and characters that mean so much to our team, and join a company that’s emerging as an entertainment powerhouse.”

  • Ottawa Reveals International Shorts Selections

    Ottawa Reveals International Shorts Selections

The Ottawa International Animation Festival — North America’s leading animation fest — announced the official selections for the 2016 International Short Film Competition. The result is a range of films from 23 countries and six continents, ranging from experimental shorts to commercials, festival darlings and first-time competitors. This year’s event marks the 40th anniversary of OIAF and will take place September 21-25.

“This is my 25th year with the OIAF and I can’t recall a more challenging selection process,” says Chris Robinson, Artistic Director at OIAF. “Many good films – which in another year might have been selected – didn’t make the cut. That’s a great compliment to those that did and a greater one to the current state of international animation.”

Among the program highlights is Paul Johnson’s Begone Dull Care 2015, an ode to Norman McLaren’s classic 1949 short done in 8bit with a synth rendition of Oscar Peterson’s original soundtrack. Another revisionist mashup is Oscar nominee Janet Perlman’s Let’s Play Like It’s 1949, which mixes animation with live-action footage from the vintage educational video “Let’s Play Fair.”

OIAF will also premiere Diane Obomsawin’s J’aime Les Filles — a collage of female-centric stories about the self-discovery of homosexual desire. Theodore Ushev’s Blind Vaysha is another woman’s story that deals with issues of past, future and memory.

In addition to Ushev and Perlman, a number of Ottawa veterans return this year. Recent Academy inductee Koji Yamamura brings “Parade” de Satie — an animated re-creation of realist ballet images that go beyond reality; thee-time OIAF grand prize winner Igor Kovalyov returns with Before Love; and Phil Mulloy’s Endgame makes its North American premiere.

Further illuminating this year’s diversity, the programmers draw attention to American stop-motion legend PES and his Honda short Paper; the surreal dreamscapes of Marta Pajek’s Figury niemozliwe i inne historie II; and student shorts from Estonia (Sander Joon’s Velodrool), France (collaborative short Crabe-Phare), Czech Republic (Jan Saska’s black comedy Happy End), Germany, Japan, Russia, the U.S. and the U.K.

French CG studio TeamTO announces the launch of Angelo Skate Away, its second mobile game based on its international hit series Angelo Rules. The first Angelo-inspired game, A Busy Day, has racked up over 2.5 million downloads since its launch in July 2015.

Angelo Skate Away is a 3D skateboard experience in which players ride through the game as their favorite character. Each level requires players to maneuver through obstacles, collecting cupcakes to unlock additional characters, better performing boards and alternate routes, and to open up the next of the game’s 50 levels.

The CG settings are taken directly from the series, and include Angelo’s main hangouts like the schoolyard, Adventure Land, classrooms, etc. The locations contain grind rails and jumps that must be used to progress in the game. Levels are also themed on specific episode stories: Angelo is late for school, has lost his brother, or needs batteries for Sherwood’s camera.

Angelo Skate Away was produced by TeamTO at its Paris studio in collaboration with series co-producer and distributor, Cake Entertainment, and German broadcaster and licensing partners Super RTL. Animated Short Exposes Palm Oil Labor Conditions

A new animated short titled The Human Cost of Conflict Palm Oil, released today by Rainforest Action Network, OPPUK — an Indonesian labor rights advocacy organization — and International Labor Rights Forum, tells the stories of three palm oil workers, exposing modern-day slavery, child labor and systemic labor abuses prevalent throughout the palm oil plantation industry.

The video follows the release of an investigative report detailing labor rights abuses documented on two plantations owned and operated by Indofood, a producer of PepsiCO-branded snack foods. PepsiCo purchases more than 450,000 tons of palm oil a year.

“The abuses highlighted in this video are all too common amongst the millions of workers in the palm oil industry,” said Herwin Nasution, Executive Director of OPPUK. “Brands that use palm oil in their products, like PepsiCo, have known about the pervasive and severe labor abuses rife in the industry and ignored them. But the dirty secret that cheap palm oil comes on the backs of exploited workers can no longer be hidden from the public.”

The Human Cost of Conflict Palm Oil is based on the real stories of three workers (under pseudonyms): Manik, who was trafficked into work on a Malaysian plantation, had his passport taken and was kept trapped in debt; Sutantri, a young mother who accepted part-time work around toxic chemicals to provide for her family; and Adi, a father who had to bring his wife and children to work on a plantation so he could make the daily quota and keep his job.

Korea’s Lezhin Brings Digital Comic Service Stateside

A major player in Korea’s comics e-publishing industry, Lezhin Entertainment, has announced that its premium digital service Lezhin Comics is now available in the United States as an app for iOS and Android, available through the App Store and Google Play.

Founded in 2012 by CEO Han Hee Sung, Lezhin has over 2,000 digital and print comics in its library. The company has partnered with more than 450 artists, 270 of whom had their projects debut through Lezhin Comics. The app became the No. 1 top-grossing comics app in Korea on Google Play within 48 hours of its launch. The company is now in development on a feature film based on its action-drama comic Double Casting.

“Comics are still treated as subculture and have yet to receive rightful respect as do movies, music, and television,” says Han. “My vision is to make comics an online entertainment experience that is immediately accessible and take them to the center stage. I believe that Webtoons blended with American culture will act as a catalyst in bringing about such a change in entertainment.”

Lezhin’s model includes a pay service where aspiring comic artists can share revenue generated by their works, as well as receive feedback from readers. The company plans to provide similar opportunities to American graphic novel artists and storytellers, and is currently running its first Lezhin US Comic Contest through July 31.

Some of the fresh genres awaiting American comic fans through Lezhin are campus romance/campus comedy, food, martial arts, sports, family drama and LGBT romance stories. Among the service’s most popular titles available in English are My Secret Brother, Ultimate Outcast, 4 Cut Hero and What Does the Fox Say?

The latest move was spurred by the U.S. demand for popular Lezhin titles driving illegal sharing. The company therefore began offering web-based services in December, and continues to release new titles online each week.

  • Framestore Goes Ape for ‘Legend of Tarzan’

Framestore Goes Ape for ‘Legend of Tarzan’

Just having swung into theaters, The Legend of Tarzan — the major motion picture adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs classic Tarzan of the Apes — features over 700 VFX shots provided by Framestore. The studio’s tasks spanned complex digital jungles, digi-double creation and intricate character animation, notably the CG apes who adopt the human Tarzan.

The film is directed by David Yates, with VFX supervision handled by his long-time collaborator Tim Burke. The story follows the orphaned son of a shipwrecked English nobleman, born into the jungles of Africa and raised by apes. The Legend of Tarzan stars Alexander Skarsgard, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Margot Robbie.

Framestore’s first creative challenge was the photo-real jungle backdrop for the film. They utilized plats of elaborate sets of settlements and villages and jungle environments back by bluescreens, created by the filmmakers at Leavesden studios. The team also referenced environments found in Gabon, in West Africa, amassing a library of roughly 7,000 indigenous plants species to use.

No Tarzan film is complete without the iconic swinging-through-the-jungle sequence. Framestore faced a few challenges in tackling the speed and movement required from the scene, which was complicated by changes in environment and lighting, as the scene transitions from a sun-filled area to a dark environment with heavy rain. Furthermore, the team were required to render the action of their fully animated Tarzan digi-double in slow-motion.

The filmmakers turned to Framestore VFX Supervisor Andy Kind to imbue the character with grace and strength for the iconic scene. The team studied ballet and circus performers to understand how the body moves when swinging on high and at speed. They then pre-vized the entire sequence, working out the exact movements Tarzan would make, before setting up a 16-unit RED camera array to capture Skarsgard’s performance in order to rebuild the geometry per frame as an animation base.

Framestore also poured energy and artistry into creating the film’s hairier stars: fully CG-animated apes who had to seamlessly interact with live actors. The director wanted to conjure Burroughs’ fictional “Mangani ape,” and has his production team develop a full-scale Mangani head and shoulders model for Framestore to reference. Framestore created the three lead Mangani: Tarzan’s adoptive mother, Kala; her son, Akut; and the fierce alpha male, Kerchak. Using gorilla anatomy reference, the team got creative modeling the Mangani, which are less furry and more muscular than real gorillas, with more exposed skin.

Animation Supervisor Kevin Spruce headed up the ape creation. “It was a very daunting concept at the beginning. Our apes were interacting with live characters, so it was a huge undertaking.” The team studied footage of gorillas and apes and even visited a zoo for first-hand experience, and discovered how the animals use full body language to communicate. But great attention also had to be paid to the apes’ eyes.

“Yates had a mandate about keeping the emotion very subtle,” notes Spruce. “It was all about the eyes, and seeing the soul there … For the animation we really felt as though we had to scale a lot back, and create the emotion through the subtle movements of the eyebrows or mouth.”

Framestore’s R&D team developed the new “Flex & Flesh” digital tool to simulate the loosening and tensing of muscles in order to achieve the high level of texture and movement in the apes’ fur and skin; and a library of facial shapes, hair filter and dynamic hair systems. Creature artists then created 15 Mangani by varying fur color, length and density, and alternating patches of grey and bald spots. The Montreal team further had to calculate how to move fur along with body dynamics in a rainy scene.

And as if that wasn’t enough, they had to create a herd of elephants as well!

Framestore is reuniting with director David Yates and VFX supervisor Tim Burke on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, out November 19.

    Global Collaboration Produces ‘Tergo’ Short

A collaboration of National Centre of Computer Animation (NCCA) graduates have come together across thousands of miles using social media to produce Tergo, a new short film released today. Conceived by director Charles Willcocks (NCCA 2011 graduate), Tergo is the result of thousands of man-hours given for free by 3D pros and filmmakers from all corners of the world — and even had from some help from director Ron Howard, who stumbled upon the set during filming.

Tergo — from the Latin for “to clean” — is the existential tale of a cleaning robot lost in the bustle of inner-city London. The film is a modern day fable for all those lost and lonely within the urban sprawl. Tergo is the fifth film directed by Charles Willcocks and released by the film collective Pallas Pictures, which he co-founded.

Willcocks assembled a team of his fellow class of ’11 grads to create and animate the robot, who first occurred to the director while watching WALL-E on a tiresome commute home through London. The artists, technicians and everyone involved in the film gave their time for free, with Willcocks directing and coordinating the project while working as a full-time 3D artist. Contributors to the film were located in Brazil, Singapore, India, Catalonia, Turkey, Ireland, Wales and England.

The well-attended event presented updates on the animated series, shared the launch strategy for the property, and went over plans for an international consumer licensing program that will trade on the brand’s established popularity. Aurora’s plush YooHoo & Friends line has sold over 80 million pieces since the company launched in 2007, and Mondo has already confirmed interest from free-to-air and pat TV broadcasters for the 52 x 11 HD CG series.

As well as YooHoo, Pammee, Lemmee, Roodee and Chewoo, the show includes 70 additional characters representing endangered, extinct and extraordinary animals, a strong environmental message, and, of course, the charm, humour and enormous appeal of the big-eyed, bushy-tailed characters the Aurora line made famous. YooHoo & Friends key product licenses are nearly finalized in the master toy, publishing, collectibles, food and personal care categories. Plush remains directly managed by Aurora.

Summit attendees also got a sneak peek at Mondo/Aurora’s Cuby Zoo (52 x 11). The animated comedy-adventure stars cube-shaped animal toys who come to life when humans are away and play a vital, yet anonymous, role in keeping the world in balance. The first episodes have already aired on EBS in South Korea.
