Animatrik Builds Virtual World for ‘Warcraft’

Inspired by Blizzard’s incredibly popular MMORPG, the eternal orc-human struggle will smash onto the big screen this summer in Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, from Legendary and Universal. But just how will the filmmakers bring the huge, ferocious orcs from the game’s universe into a believable cinematic existence? The answer: with innovative motion-capture and virtual production technology from industry leader Animatrik.

According to Animatrik CTO Brett Ineson, Warcraft was the company’s largest-ever virtual production, requiring eight different stages (up to 300 feet long), even outdoor stages, for five months of shooting. Animatrik provided tracking cameras, tracking weapons and props — mixed in with live-action sets and actors — and then integrated CG sets and actors.

NaturalPoint and Vicon cameras  were used. Animatrik set up what they called an “outside in” real-time simulcam composite system when actors were suited up for no-cap, as well as “inside out” approach for when they weren’t:

“We’d mount a small vision survey camera to the movie camera,” explains Ineson. “This camera would integrate with a system called SolidTrack, which would lock onto every pixel it sees and calculate its 3D position to the world around it. We could then work out the offset between that camera and the movie camera for the simulcam view.”

“It really helped with things like framing, since the orcs, for example, might be up to 12 feet tall. Knowing that on set meant the camera operator could re-position for the best angle. Simply put, the production was able to shoot Warcraft as if it were a normal movie. This drastically reduced the changes necessary on the back end.”

The team also had to handle outdoor motion capture shoots for the film. To compensate for interference from light pollution and rain, they used active marker suits fitted with LED lights (developed by Standard Deviation). The LEDs are synchronised to pulse in time with the motion capture camera, and thus do not impact the main photography, says Ineson.

Another key role Animatrik played was in capturing emotive facial performances from the on-set actors playing orc characters. A helmet camera system developed by Technoprops which uses a pair of stereo cameras delivering two stream of video was used to catch extremely nuanced facial expressions.

“Animatrik’s role in the facial animation was in the post process tracking of the data that came off those cameras,” explains Ineson. “The stereo cameras meant we could track the data in 3D as opposed to 2D. We would track the facial marker set into 3D and then deliver that data over to the VFX vendor, in this case ILM who then worked with it in their their proprietary facial animation solver.”

Ineson and his team are quite impressed with the work they were able to deliver for Warcraft, especially with the project’s massive scale.

“There was a lot of R&D involved in Warcraft, and a lot of things that had to be custom build in order to make the movie possible,” he adds. “Our services have really benefited and we now have even more experience of capturing in some really challenging environments. We truly feel like we’re ready to take on any challenge.”

  • Neoglyphic Launches NeoFur Tool for Unreal Engine

Neoglyphic Launches NeoFur Tool for Unreal Engine

Neoglyphic Entertainment has unveiled NeoFur — a cross-platform, real-time fur and fiber technology for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. A fast, dynamic and reasonably priced solution, NeoFur enables animation and game studios to tackle creation of fuzzy and fibrous characters, objects and surfaces at a fidelity level never before possible in a real-time engine. NeoFur was recently named as one of five teams selected for Epic’s Unreal Dev Grants program.

“Films like Disney’s Zootopia have shown us the beauty that fur can bring to a production, but at a high cost. With NeoFur, studios of any type can afford high-end technology that dramatically enhances the look of their environments and characters,” said Carlos Montero, Neoglyphic’s Technical Art Director. “There’s no reason a studio needs to spend valuable time and money to achieve believable looking fur, as NeoFur’s solution saves time and costs while providing breathtaking results.”

NeoFur uses shell-rendering techniques to create the illusion of millions of millions of hairs or strands. Patent-pending advances allow the use of compute shaders and other advanced shading strategies to take this technique to another level, bringing fast simulation, realistic physics and unique Level-Of-Detail systems designed to combat fill-rate. This makes NeoFur an extremely versatile tool, which can be authored for PC and mobile games, VR platforms like Oculus and HTC Vive, and gaming consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

  • Jorge Gutierrez Named in LA Times AMPAS Diversity Nominees

The Los Angeles Times has released a multimedia report listing 100 people making a difference in increasing diversity in Hollywood, submitting the names to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The list pairs candidates with their applicable Academy branches, including “Short Films and Animation” — for which LAT named four influential figures.

The Animation luminaries tagged include director Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life for Reel FX, TV’s El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera), who cites legendary filmmakers Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Inarritu as relatable inspirations. “My life mission as a filmmaker has always been to do things that deal with my culture. Early on, people warned me, ‘You’re trying to sell things no one’s buying. That’s not something audiences are interested in.’ I saw things change as the economic realities of new audiences began to dawn on executives. It’s still not easy, but now my culture is viewed as a strength,” Gutierrez says in his LAT interview.

Introduced in Japan two years ago, Yo-Kai Watch continues to be the top-rated show for kids 4-12 on TV Tokyo. In Japan alone, the brand sold over $2 billion in merchandise in the first 15 months — in addition to robust sales of games, music and publishing.

In the US where Yo-Kai Watch airs weekdays on Disney XD, Nintendo has seen increasing game sales while the Hasbro toy line has been a top 10 seller. Over 50 licensees have signed on for North America to-date, with initial programs launching for back-to-school 2016 with a bigger push for fall and Holiday 2016.

Directed by Penny Lane, Nuts! will have a two-week engagement through to July 5 at Film Forum on Houston St. with six screenings daily.

In 1917, a country doctor in Milford, Kansas named J.R. Brinkley began treating impotence in male patients by surgically implanting them with goat “glands.” Demand for the treatment grew so much that Brinkley even began raising his own goats to meet it. Over the years, the medical magician built the country’s fourth most powerful radio station — in line with many self-promoting snake oil men of the day –, ran for governor of Kansas and amassed an extraordinary fortune.

“Like Our Nixon, my previous feature-length film, Nuts! is structured as classical tragedy with a complicated and deeply hubristic protagonist, rendered with equal parts comedy and pathos,” says Lane.

Nuts!, which started on the festival circuit this year, is directed by Penny Lane and written by Thom Stylinski. The film is illustrated and animated by Drew Christie, Hazel Lee Santino, Michael Pisano, Rose Stark, Krystal Downs, Julia Veldman and Ace & Son Moving Picture Co. James Belfer, Caitlin Mae Burke, Penny Lane and Daniel Shepard produce. Nuts! is released in the USA by Cartuna.

‘Belladonna of Sadness’ Arrives on BD & VOD July 12

One of the great forgotten gems of Japanese animation will get its first U.S. home entertainment release as Eiichi Yamamoto’s Belladonna of Sadness arrives on Blu-ray and VOD July 12. The newly restored 4k film comes home after a limited theatrical release through Cinelicious Pictures.

Belladonna of Sadness is the last in the adult-themed Animerama Trilogy produced by Osamu Tezuka, and has been all but lost to cinephiles since its original 1970s release. The film is a psychedelic, psychologic tale of an innocent young woman named Jeanne whose victimization leads her to make a pact with the devil. Sensuous illustrative animation inspired by Egon Schiele and a mindblowing psych rock soundtrack from composer Masahiko Satoh make this a unique ’70s cinematic treasure.

In conjunction with the Blu-ray release, Hat & Beard and Cinelicious are releasing a book about the movie: Belladonna of Sadness: A Companion to the 1973 Cult Japanese Anime Film. The book features the first in-depth interviews translated into English with director Yamamoto, illustrator Kuni Fukai and composer Satoh, plus color reproductions of the film’s surreal artwork and interviews with the restoration artists at Cinelicious. You can pre-order the regular edition and Limited Edition (with Blu-ray, one-sheet poster, pins and more) on Hat & Beard’s website.
