  • Jennifer Howell Named Development Head for DreamWorks Animation

After serving as Head of Comedy at Paramount for the last two-and-a-half years, Jennifer Howell has joined DreamWorks Animation as its new Head of Development, Deadline reports. Howell is stepping in as Gregg Taylor vacates the post in order to focus on producing DWA’s musical feature Larrikins, which he started on last August. Howell will report in to Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria.

Howell brings a good animation pedigree to her new role at DWA. She previously ran 20th Century Fox Television’s animation department, and was EVP at Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Important Studios. Howell was a supervising producer on South Park, producing on the show for 10 years, as well as on their films South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut and Team America: World Police as well as the live-action series That’s My Bush!

While at Paramount, Howell setup comedy series Soapdish, Grease: Live, First Wives Club, Kid Boss, Bajillion Dollar Brokers and School of Rock. At Fox TV, she helped launched primetime animated comedies including Bob’s Burgers, The Cleveland Show, Napoleon Dynamite, Allen Gregory, Murder Police and Sit Down Shut Up.

Taylor will now give his full attention to Larrikins, which is slated for a February 16, 2018 release through Fox — though the Comcast acquisition likely means Universal will distribute the CG feature. Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin is starring and directing (with Puss in Boots helmer Chris Miller). Minchin is also composing for the film, having done music and lyrics for the Tony-winning Matilda the Musical.

The rock-n-roll animal adventure centers on a bilby (a small, rodent-like, big-eared marsupial that lives in the Australian desert) who has lived under a rock his entire life. When he is kicked out by his parents and told to get a life, he goes on a road trip with a band through the Outback. Larrikins is written by Harry Cripps.

Taylor had been instrumental to the formation of Oriental DreamWorks, as well as the acquisition of Classic Media, and helped create the company’s TV division. Prior to DreamWorks Animation, he served as Senior EVP at the Kennedy/Marshall Company for six years.

  • Second ‘Sing’ Trailer Takes the Stage

Second ‘Sing’ Trailer Takes the Stage

A new trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s holiday release Sing has arrived from Universal Pictures, putting its assorted animal stars in the spotlight. Written and directed by Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, the music-driven CG animated comedy arrives in theaters December 21.

Trailer No. 2 gives us a taste of the more than 85 hit songs the film crams in, plus a more intimate look at the dream-filled contestants of the show’s central competition — including an overworked and underappreciated mother of 25 piglets, who at the end of the spot takes a brief break from reality to boogie down in a grocery store in a wonderfully relatable moment. Same, mama pig. Same.

Set in a modern world inhabited solely by animals, Sing centers on a dapper koala named Buster Moon (voiced by Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey), whose once grand theater is on the verge of closing. He has one last shot to save his life’s work: producing the world’s greatest singing competition. Out of the many contestants, five leaders emerge: A crooning con-artist mouse (Seth MacFarlane), a teenage elephant with massive stage fright (Tori Kelly), a mother pig run ragged by her huge litter (Reese Witherspoon), a young gorilla who wants to leave the gangster life (Taron Egerton), and a punky porcupine trying to shake off her arrogant boyfriend (Scarlett Johansson). They all have one thing in common: the dream of changing their life’s course.

Alcon Ent. Announces Animated ‘Garfield’ Movie

A decade since the last time America’s favorite cantankerous cat was seen on the big screen in the live-action/CG hybrid flick Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, Alcon Entertainment has revealed it is producing a fully-animated Garfield movie.

“I’ve been so impressed with the quality of animation and storytelling coming out of Hollywood of late,” said Garfield creator Jim Davis. “I can’t wait to get into production with the terrific team Alcon has assembled.”

The new vehicle for Jim Davis’ furry orange feline is backed by producer John Cohen (Despicable Me, Angry Birds) and Steven P. Wegner, with Davis as executive producer along with Bridget McMeel from Amuse. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will also serve as producers. The studio plans to build a new feature franchise out of the brand.

The original Garfield comic strip first appeared in 1978, documenting the daily life of a lazy, food-obsessed, cynical and selfish orange cat — as well as his somewhat clueless bachelor owner Jon Arbuckle and dimwitted but loving Odie the dog. The strip started out in 41 newspapers, but its instant popularity helped push it to 2,580 at its height, with an estimated readership of 260 million. In fact, Garfield is the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.

The comic inspired numerous animated TV specials, the classic 2D series Garfield and Friends (Film Roman), which ran for seven seasons, and popular CG series The Garfield Show (Dargaud Media) — plus the two hybrid movies from and three direct-to-video movies from Fox.

  • WIA & Lindsay Doran Present ‘The Quagmire of the Female Character’

WIA & Lindsay Doran Present ‘The Quagmire of the Female Character’

Women in Animation invites members and non-members to attend an invigorating discussion with film biz veteran Lindsay Doran on “The Quagmire of the Female Character.” Taking place Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Sony Pictures Animation’s Harryhausen Theater, the event will address the shifting roles of female characters in animated movies, what makes a good heroine, and what it means for them to send right or wrong messages.

    The announcement reads:

“Once upon a time, almost all of the protagonists in animated movies were male (with various professions) or princesses (with no apparent profession at all). Then everyone woke up and decided it wasn’t a good idea for our female characters to be so passive, so the princesses turned into warrior princesses or sometimes into just warriors. Whatever the boys were doing in an animated movie, the girls had to do it too. Only better.”

“But – What if girls really like princesses? And love stories? Is that so wrong? Is it OK for our female characters to cry once in a while, or is that sending the wrong message? And is it a better message if the girl characters are just as good at fighting as the boys?”

Lindsay Doran has worked in movies for over 30 years as a studio executive and producer. She has served as President and COO of United Artists and as President of Mirage Productions. Currently, Doran divides her time between producing and her work as “The Script Whisperer” providing in-demand consultation for high priority script development. Her producer credits include Sense and Sensibility (for which Doran won Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards), Nanny McPhee and Stranger than Fiction.

The event is free for WIA members (plus one guest) and $15 for non-members. Doors open at 7 p.m. — seating is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Members must include guests’ full names when RSVPing.

Disney Invites Guests into Beast’s Castle in ‘Beauty’ Teaser

Walt Disney Studios has released a first sneak-peek teaser for its upcoming live-action musical revamp of Beauty and the Beast — arriving in theaters March 17, 2017. The subtle spot shows us brief vignettes set inside the Beast’s castle, showing its candle-lit opulence fading to abandonment and decay; plus some voiceover hints and a brief glimpse of Emma Watson’s Belle.

Directed by Bill Condon (Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 & 2), 2017’s Beauty and the Beast will be a retelling of the studio’s 1991 animated classic, which famously was the first animated feature ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The animated film did take the Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, and composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman return for this take, joined by lyricist Tim Rice who collaborated on new songs for the Beauty and the Beast stage musical. Disney says this film will stay true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs.

    Synopsis:

Beauty and the Beast is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award® winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.
