  • Cosmos-Maya Leads Regional Animation Production

    Cosmos-Maya Leads Regional Animation Production

Asian studio Cosmos-Maya, based in Singapore and Mumbai, marks four years as the largest producer of original Indian animated content consistently over the past four years. The milestone is reached as the company boasts five TV shows currently on air, with three more in production and set to launch later in the year.

Cosmos-Maya’s flagship series, Motu Patlu, launched in 2012 on Nickelodeon and is one of the most popular kids’ shows in India, as well as boasting a very large content bank accumulated in a short time.

Motu Patlu is very unique as a show. In the last four years, we have completed almost 500 episodes and almost 10 TV special features all of which have received a lot of love from the Indian kids,” said Cosmos-Maya CEO Anish Mehta, who produces the series. “We intend to produce a theatrical feature film based on Motu Patlu soon. While it is a record of sorts in terms of the production, the high ratings that we have got, both for Motu Patlu and Shiva are highly encouraging. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our broadcast partner Nickelodeon; whether it was the support to produce so much content or the mounting of the show.”

Shiva, another collaboration between Cosmos-Maya and Viacom18, launched during Diwali last year and is proving a success in the region. Other Cosmos-Maya series are the slapstick comedy Eena Meena Deeka, airing its second season on Disney’s Hungama channel and sold to France, Germany and North America; ViR – The Robot Boy, airing on Hungama, currently in its third season with plans for TV movies; and Kisna, airing on Discovery Kids.

PBS KIDS Dates Premiere for Henson’s ‘Splash and Bubbles’

Even though Sesame Street has shuffled off to HBO, the relationship between PBS KIDS and The Jim Henson Company is still going swimmingly. At its annual member station meeting, the pubcaster dated the premiere of its newest show Splash and Bubbles — a CG animated series from JHC and Herschend Enterprises (Dollywood, Harlem Globetrotters).

Splash and Bubbles will premiere Wednesday, November 23, 2016 on PBS stations nationwide. Digital content related to the show — including games, apps and parent and educator resources — will be available beginning this fall.

Created by John Tartaglia (ImaginOcean, Johnny and the Sprites), Splash and Bubbles uses groundbreaking digital puppetry animation and encourages kids ages 4-7 to explore the natural undersea world along with the titular fish characters. Developed with an advisory panel of top marine biologists, digital innovators and educators, the adventures are grounded in a marine biology curriculum focused on diversity, individuality, interconnectedness and the joy of discovery. Splash and Bubbles also introduces young viewers to the concepts of ecological balance and ocean conservancy.

The series follows Splash, a yellow fusilier fish who has migrated all over the ocean before settling in Reeftown, where he befriends Bubbles, a Mandarin dragonet whose vivid markings match her colorful personality. Until Splash came along, Bubbles and the denizens of Reeftown had no idea what lay beyond their coral home, but all that changes as the duo explores the sea to make new friends and learn about the many forms of life inhabiting the ocean.

Splash and Bubbles is partly funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and is executive produced by Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford of The Jim Henson Company, Julie Phillips and Merrill Puckett-Miller of Herschend Enterprises, as well as John Tartaglia, Michael Shawn Lewis and Jill Shinderman. Tom Keniston is producer and David Skelly is supervising director. The Jim Henson Company oversees all distribution and merchandising for the property and Herschend Enterprises administers all themed entertainment rights.

GKIDS Takes Hold of ‘Girl without Hands’

GKIDS has entered a distribution agreement for all North American rights to the upcoming animated feature The Girl without Hands, following the film’s premiere screening at Cannes. Written and directed by French auteur Sebastien Laudenbach, the adult fairytale will screen in competition at Annecy in June.

GKIDS’ President & CEO Eric Beckman and SVP Distribution David Jesteadt negoatiated the deal with Pyramide International’s head of international sales Agathe Valentin.

“Dave and I were both blown away,” said Beckman. “The film has an utterly transporting beauty and poetry, while the story unfolds with the powerful dream logic of a fairytale, taking you into the darker, deeper, primal origins and emotional core of the Grimm’s tales. With magic and cruelty, sublime beauty and tenderness, The Girl without Hands is at once timeless and unlike anything you have seen before, a stunning example of the potential of the medium of animation as a powerful cinematic art form for adult moviegoers.”

Produced by Les Film Sauvages, The Girl without Hands is based on an infrequently adapted Brothers Grimm fairytale. The film centers on a girl, the daughter of a miller who in hard times sells her to the Devil. Protected by her purity from the archfiend, she escapes, but the Devil in revenge deprives her of her hands.

Second ‘BFG’ Trailer Glimpses More Giant World

Having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Walt Disney Pictures has unveiled a second trailer for Steven Spielberg’s The BFG, adapted from the classic tale by Roald Dahl. Trailer number two gives us a better look at the much bigger and unfriendlier giants that populate the film’s world of magic. The CG-laced live-action feature arrives in theaters July 1, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.

The film follows a 10-year-old London girl named Sophie, who one night is taken on an alarming journey to Giant Country by one of its denizens: a 24-foot tall, big-eared and dim-witted brute. But this creature is not like his countrymen, as Sophie discovers he is actually a Big Friendly Giant (voiced by Mark Rylance). But the girl’s arrival in this world has attracted the attention of the sinister giants Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jermaine Clement), who are twice as tall and many times meaner than the BFG. The unlikely friends head back to London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her about the giants — if they can first convince her and her maid Mary (Rebecca Hall) that the beasts exist.

Directed by Spielberg from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (E.T., The Black Stallion) based on Dahl’s 1982 novel, The BFG is also produced by Spielberg along with Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer, with Kathleen Kennedy, John Madden, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Michael Siegel, Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov as executive producers.

  • Clip: Alberto Vazquez’s ‘Decorado’ to Screens at Cannes

Decorado, the latest short film from Goya Award-winning director Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy, Unicorn Blood), will screen as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors Fortnight program on May 20 at the Croisette theater. A co-production of UniKo in Bilbao, Spain and French studio Autour de Minuit (which also handles international distribution), the moody black-and-white animation is built on the premise: the world is a marvelous theatre, but the casting is deplorable.

This year’s Directors Fortnight animated offerings also include the shorts Happy End by Jan Saska (Czech Rep.), a hand-drawn graduation film that is “a dark comedy about death with a happy ending” that unfolds through a chain of chance encounters; and Listening to Beethoven by Stayer studio founder Garri Bardin (Russia), which uses an allegory of the natural versus the industrial to celebrate the undeniable triumph of freedom over suppression.

In addition to Decorado‘s bow at Cannes, Alberto Vazquez will have his first ever animated feature project Psychonauts (Psiconautas) running in the official selection for Annecy this summer, continuing the strange adventures of Birdboy. The feature is based on Vazquez’s original graphic novel and produced by Zircozine and Basque Films, with Autour de Minuit handling distribution.
