UNICEF’s Animated ‘Unfairy Tales’ Tells Refugee Children’s Stories

UNICEF is launching a new animated series meant to bring attention to the youngest victims of the Syrian refugee crisis, Unfairy Tales. Created by ad agency 180LA, the videos chronicle real children’s journeys from Syria by juxtaposing stunning animation with terrifying narrations of the terrible events wrought by this globally impactful humanitarian disaster.

The campaign will officially launch with the first story, Malak and the Boat, which will premiere at the Supporting Syria & The Region donor conference in London on February 4. The event is co-hosted by world leaders of the U.K., Germany, Kuwait, Norway and the United Nations. More than 70 countries, international organizations, NGOs, civil society and private sector attendees are expected.

Malak and the Boat tells seven-year-old Malak’s harrowing story of his journey across the Mediterranean seeking shelter from the Syrian conflict. Visual design company House of Colors built a custom animation algorithm for the film that gives the waves a stylized, almost autonomous behavior as if the sea were a sentient thing.

UNICEF will unveil a second film, Ivine and Pillow, in March as part of its #NoLostGeneration campaign to mark the five year anniversary of the Syrian conflict. All stories will roll out across UNICEF’s global regions in French, Spanish and Arabic translations.

Currently, 2 million children are living as refugees or are on the run in search of safety. UNICEF’s figures show 8 million Syrian children inside and outside of the country are in need of humanitarian aid.

  • Cartoon Network Commits $30M to Presidential STEM Initiative

Cartoon Network Commits $30M to Presidential STEM Initiative

Over the weekend, President Obama announced the White House’s commitment to making hands-on STEM learning an integral part of students’ education in the United States. As part of this effort, Turner’s Cartoon Network will be supporting the Computer Science for All Initiative with a complementary $30 million initiative dedicated to engaging young people in creative coding. CN is the only kid-focused private sector partner for the White House program.

As part of this commit, Cartoon Network will integrate diverse, new characters who code into their programming — including in the new, reimagined PowerPuff Girls animated series. The company will also highlight positive STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) role models into a new public service announcement campaign aimed at kids ages 6-11. And they will offer even more coding tutorials through MIT Media Lab’s Scratch coding platform for kids, building on the success of the We Bare Bears tutorials with even more characters, scenes and sounds available for kids to learn with.

“This generation of kids is incredibly creative and inventive, and we’re inspired by them every day,” said Christina Miller, president and general manager of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. “Computer literacy and learning to code are vitally important skills that foster creativity and self-expression. With this long-term commitment, we will leverage our brands and platforms to drive awareness for coding and provide access to the necessary tools to kids everywhere. The result, we hope, is that we help inspire the next generation as much as they inspire us.”

HopMotion Launches Debut Series ‘Chhoti Anandi’

HopMotion Animation, a leading Indian toon production house which will soon be expanding to Ottawa, has delivered its first 2D animated series Chhoti Anandi to the local market as it launched on India’s premier general entertainment channel Colors on January 17.

Chhoti Anandi centers on a brave, righteous 8-year-old child who is wise beyond her years and is known for coming up with innovative, unique ways to solve the problems of the people in her village. The show is a stand-out in the Indian TV industry for a few reasons: It is one of the first animated series in the country to feature a female protagonist. It is also the first time that a popular TV character (Anandi from Colors TV’s long-running drama series Balika Vadhu) has been given an animated series spin-off. Chhoti Anandi is also notably produced entirely using the Toon Boom Pipeline.

The show is produced by Sphere Origins. HopMotion, founded two years ago by Anish Patel and Carmen Zainabadi, will be showcasing other IPs at the Kidscreen Summit in Miami.

  • ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Opens No. 1, Sets Record in China

‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Opens No. 1, Sets Record in China

DreamWorks Animation’s first co-pro with Shanghai’s Oriental DreamWorks is delivering on Jeffrey Katzenberg’s investment in opening up avenues to the Chinese theatrical audience. In addition to opening at the No. 1 spot in the U.S. with an estimated $41 million (breaking the January opening record), Kung Fu Panda 3‘s day-and-date release in China and other key overseas markets has brought in an additional $75.7 million in international box office takings.

KFP3‘s performance in China met best expectations with a record-breaking opening weekend for an animated film — $58.3 million from about 15,000 screens, including 3D and IMAX. The IMAX screenings alone (289 theaters) brought in $4.2 million for the CG sequel. The film also had a strong opening in Korea, where it debuted on 1,300-plus screens and took $11.4 million, $380,000 of which was from the 17 participating IMAX theaters.

The last Kung Fu Panda, which opened in May 2011, opened with over $55 million — a figure already topped by KFP3‘s earnings in China alone. The new film has bested the three-day animated feature opening record in China previously held by Minions. The Illumination Ent. film went on to earn $68.5 million in China. KFP3 is expected to easily best this, benefiting from its local production status with a higher share of box office (about 40%) and permission to stay in theaters for more than 30 days, which is the usual restriction placed on films by the local quota system. Industry watchers are speculating that DWA’s latest film will even top the all-time animation record set by Monkey King: Hero Is Back last year, at $153 million.

Disney Announces Same Day China Release for ‘Zootopia’

Disney has announced that its spring release Zootopia will get a theatrical release in China on March 3, day-and-date with the film’s release in the U.S. and U.K. — although some territories will get to enjoy it a bit earlier. The Chinese release will include standard 2D, 3D, IMAX and China Giant Screen formats.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 55th feature is a CG comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard. Set in a world designed for and by animals, where humans never existed, Zootopia follows plucky officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin), the first bunny to ever join the city police force. Things get interesting when she finds herself forced to join forces with a conniving con-artist fox named Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to crack her first big case — or else kiss her crime fighting dreams goodbye.

The voice cast also features Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, J.K. Simmons, Jenny Slate, Bonnie Hunt, Octavia Spencer, Katie Lowes, John DiMaggio, Tommy Lister, Tommy Chong and Shakira.

  • TeamTO Taps Lead Creatives for Girl-Power Toon ‘Jade Armor’

TeamTO Taps Lead Creatives for Girl-Power Toon ‘Jade Armor’

French studio TeamTO has appointed director Chloe Miller and head writer Rebecca Hobbs to its new “girl-power” animated series Jade Armor, after switching out the original concept’s boy lead for a girl hero. The announcement was made by Corinne Kouper, Producer and Founding Manager of TeamTO.

Based on an idea by Pongo Kuo, Jade Armor (52 x 11) is an animated action-comedy about an unlikely hero with an even unlikelier set of powers — and one awesome, high-tech Jade Armor suit that can be a bit unpredictable. The concept was developed and presented at Cartoon Forum 2011 with a male lead (a sort of Ferris Bueller wearing Iron Man’s suit). But Kouper seized on the notion of recasting Jade as a female lead, bolstering the show’s girl-power theme with a girl-powered creative team.

“With its bubbly, feminine and brave heroine – descended from a long line of strong women – Jade Armor  is a project very dear to my heart,” says Kouper, who serves as exec producer on the show. “This modern girl role model is a fun and important one for the kids space and interestingly appeals to boy audiences as well.”

Jade Armor is an action series with a lot of comedy, set in a picturesque yet contemporary world. Cho Yu is a modern day girl who stays busy at school and volunteering at an animal shelter. The last in a long line of strong, powerful women, Cho Yu’s life takes an unexpected turn when she receives a mystical suit of jade armor. With her best friends Yang and Lin and the magical Beasticons, Cho Yu battles for justice. A Bible and trailer will debut at Kidscreen. Delivery is planned for 2018.

Chloe Miller joined TeamTO in 2006, serving as first AD on Zoe Kezako, then head of graphic development for Babar and the Adventures of Badou, director of Angelo Rules and art direction lead for TeamTO’s feature Yellowbird.

Rebecca Hobbs is a veteran scriptwriter and developer. Her CV includes stints as VP for worldwide drama at Fremantle Media and four years as director of development for Disney Channels EMEA. She is now a freelance writer and development executive.

  • DWA Launches ‘Trolls’ Trailer

    DWA Launches ‘Trolls’ Trailer

DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox are offering a little taste of what audiences can expect from the CG animated movie based on the classic toy brand Trolls with a fresh trailer hitting the web today.

The characters, revealed earlier in the month on Twitter, take minimal cues from their origins, with much more color and vibrancy than the classic collectibles. And the trailer promises a film focused on comedy, adventure and plenty of music as the dancing critters work it to Silento and throwback to the 69 Boyz.

(Small point of contention: That is not how you Tootsie Roll.)

Directed by Mike Mitchell and co-director Walt Dohrn (both reuniting with their Shrek Forever After colleague, producer Gina Shay), Trolls stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the Trolls, and her polar opposite, Branch, played by Justin Timberlake. Together, the unlikely pair must embark on an epic adventure that takes them far from the only world they’ve ever known.

The voice cast also features Gwen Stefani, James Corden, Russell Brand, Icona Pop, Ron Funches and Kunal Nayyar.

Illumination’s Secret Is out for ‘Life of Pets’

Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures have released a second trailer for their fifth animated feature collaboration, The Secret Life of Pets, due out July 8. The preview whisks you around the Big City, from dank alleys full of sinister street cats to the tops of skyscraper scaffolding, and gives a much fuller sense of the animal characters (who are anything but domestic).

“What do our pets do while we’re out all day?” is the core concept of the film, which centers on happy house-dog Max, whose ideal life in a city apartment with his doting owner is turned upside down when she brings home a big, shaggy, ill-mannered rescue dog. Things go even more haywire when the pair go missing in the big city, and their neighbor pets set out on a parallel madcap quest to find them as they struggle to return home.

Comedy superstars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart make their animated feature-film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets, which co-stars Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce the film directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Brian Lynch and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio.
