‘A Liar’s Biography’ Out on Disc on Feb. 12

The highly original animated take on Monty Python’s Graham Chapman will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on February 12. A Liar’s Biography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman uses different styles of animation from 14 different studios to highlight chapters in the unconventional life of the late British comic. The Virgil Films release will carry an SRP of $24.99.

The man who co-wrote the immortal “Dead Parrot” sketch became himself “demised” in 1989 at age 48 from throat cancer. But in seeming preparation for this event, Chapman years earlier recorded himself reading from his book A Liar’s Autobiography. Directors Bill Jones (son of Terry Jones), Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett, with help from animators at 14 studios, have ingeniously turned those tapes into a hilarious, revealing and poignant look at this creative genius and complicated man.

The feature utilizes a wide range of animation techniques and new contributions from the other Pythons (and surprise guests) to tell the story of the tall, handsome, brilliant comedian. The Virgil Films release will feature over an hour of video extras, including a behind-the-scenes featurette, “Anatomy of a Liar,” trailers and more.

  • Nic Mathieu to Direct Warner’s ‘Robotech’ Movie

Nic Mathieu to Direct Warner’s ‘Robotech’ Movie

Warner Bros. has signed commercials director Nic Mathieu to direct its much-anticipated live-action movie of Robotech. The film will be produced by Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire, along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The 1980s-era Robotech series is an intergalactic mecha drama that spans generations over the course of three acts: The Macross Saga, Robotech Masters and New Generation. The epic begins in the year 1999, when a massive alien battlecruiser crash-lands on Earth in the midst of a bloody global war. With the possibility of a more perilous threat looming, the human race collectively undertakes the task of rebuilding the spacecraft and using its technology to build massive robots for the purpose of defending the Earth should its extraterrestrial masters come to reclaim it. When that day comes, the rebuilt ship’s inexperienced crew, led by hotshot pilot Rick Hunter and war hero Roy Fokker, launches the battlecruiser into war.

More than 20 years after Robotech want off the air, Harmony Gold picked up the story with a new animated feature film titled Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. Navarre Corp.’s FUNimation Ent. acquired home video, broadcast and theatrical rights, giving it a very limited theatrical run in the U.S. The award-winning pic is now available on DVD. The original 1980s toon was produced by Japan’s Tatsunoko Productions.

Ireland’s Monster Animation Relaunches as Geronimo

According to the Irish Film and TV Network, Dublin-based Monster Animation & Design is relaunching as Geronimo Productions. Established in 1995, the toon house has produced animated series such as Fluffy Gardens, Roobarb & Custard Too and Punky. The rebranding was made to avoid further confusion between Monster Animation and Design, and the other Dublin-based production company, Monster Entertainment.

Originally, both animation studios were one entity, which specialized in distribution. However, Andrew Fitzpatrick remained a distribution company with the Monster Entertainment trading name, while Gerard O’Rourke continued with the Monster Animation and Design name, specializing in production. Today, both companies produce and distribute animated projects for the local and global markets. O’Rourke told IFTN, that he and Fitzpatrick are still best friends, and the the name change was simply a way to differentiate between the two companies when trading on an international level.

Monster Animation and Design will from now on be known as Geronimo, inspired by the Apache leader who led wars against Mexican and American provinces in the 19th century.

Monster Entertainment is the animation company behind show such as I’m a Creepy Crawly and I’m a Monster series, which was acquired by Discovery Networks International at last year’s MIPTV conference.

  • Darabont Offers Details About New ‘Godzilla’ Script

Oscar-nominated writer Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) has offered some details on Gareth Edwards’ upcoming reboot of the Godzilla franchise for the big screen. The screenwriter has come on board to deliver a final draft of a script by Max Bornstein. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) is reportedly in talks to star in the film.

Speaking to io9, Darabont said he found it very interesting that Godzilla started off as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Atomic bomb tests the U.S. was conducting in the South Pacific.

“The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the shit out of your city, that was Godzilla,” he explains. “Filtered through the very fanciful imaginations of the Japanese perception. And then he became Clifford the Big Red Dog in the subsequent films. He became the mascot of Japan, he became the protector of Japan. Another big ugly monster would show up and he would fight that monster to protect Japan. Which I never really quite understood, the shift.”

He added that the new feature will certainly not be campy and will go for a cool take on the monster, while staying true to the traditions of the original film.

“We want this to be a terrifying force of nature,” says Darabont. “What was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It’s not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It’s different, it’s a different set of circumstances than you’re used to seeing. And that’s tremendously exciting as a writer when you’re asked to do something else.”

  • The Foundry Adds Hieroplayer to the Mix

The Foundry Adds Hieroplayer to the Mix

London-based CG and vfx software developer The Foundry has introduced a new vfx review and playback tool to the market called Hieroplayer. The tool allows Nuke users the ability to playback every shot on the vfx timeline in context on their workstations. The new playback tool is priced at £200 (about $317) and includes one year’s maintenance.

A Nuke user with a Hieroplayer can export the shot or sequence that they are working on in Nuke, then play it back and review it in context with full audio on the tool’s vfx timeline. They will also have easy access to multiple versions of their shots.

Hieroplayer also compliments Hiero, The Foundry’s shot management, conform and review toolset. Nuke users get access to a full Hiero project on their vfx workstation, allowing them to view and work on shots in the context of a conformed Hiero timeline so they can quickly review versions as soon as they have been rendered.

“Hieroplayer fills a function we know users have been crying out for,” Jack Binks, Hiero product manager. “Our price point is competitive with other products and it has obvious benefits for Nuke and Hiero users. It’s the missing piece of the puzzle.”

‘Angry Birds Star Wars’ Revealed as Most Popular Game

According to a just-released study, Rovio’s Angry Birds Star Wars is the most played children’s game since its release. The study was made by start-up Kytephone which offers tools that turn Android phones into kid-safe devices with parental controls.

Kytephone pulled this data from a sample size of 13,000 children, aged 8 to 14 years olds, in over 70 countries. Kytephone co-founder Anooj Shah says the team didn’t find any major differences in app usage between regions. He noted that everyone seems to enjoy playing Rovio games regardless of location. The company looked at this data during the holidays and then again in the new year to see if anything had changed.

During the holiday season, the company found that children were spending 51 percent more time in Angry Birds Star Wars, compared with Angry Birds, despite only having 40 percent of its install base. They spent 197 percent more time in the Star Wars version than Angry Birds Space, despite having only 57 percent of its install base.

The most popular games, in terms of time spent playing, were:

Rodriguez told Collider that Bruce Willis will reprise his role as tough policeman Hartigan in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

The pic, which is slated to be released on October 4, also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Meloni, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King and Dennis Haysbert. Miller is co-directing the feature with Rodriguez, just as he did with the original.

Rodriguez told Collider, “[Juno Temple] just shot…she was fantastic. She and Ray Liotta playted together, they were amazing…Jeremy Piven shot just last night. There are some characters from the book. It might surprise people who they plan and turns that they do. Bruce [Willis] is back…so you’ll be seeing him. We shot this in 3D. Because this is a very two-dimensional world, it’s very stylized. To see that kind of stylization in 3D will blow people’s mind.”

  • LAIKA’s ‘ParaNorman’ Receives GLAAD Nomination

    LAIKA’s ‘ParaNorman’ Receives GLAAD Nomination

LAIKA’s ParaNorman received a much-deserved GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Award nomination for Outstanding Film last week. Directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell, the pic is the first mainstream animated children’s movie to include a positive gay character (Mitch, the jock) in a subtle and quite matter-of-fact manner.

As the film’s writer and co-director Chris Butler told The Advocate

“We were telling a story that was fundamentally about intolerance. We believed that it was important to have the strength of our convictions…In in a sense, that made it all the more potent, I think, because Mitch is just an ordinary guy — and what I wanted to do with the script throughout the story was, first of all, to turn preconceptions on their head. But also, every character in the movie is judging someone else, good and bad, usually misjudging, and I wanted to make the audience complicit in that. You think you know that a zombie is going to want to eat your brain, you think that this dumb jock is straight. Actually, you don’t know everything just by looking at them. That was important to me.”

Animated features have had a sad history of including vaguely gay characters as villains such as Jafar in Aladdin, Scar in The Lion King and King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph. Hopefully, ParaNorman, which addresses issues of acceptance of everyone’s differences, can set new standards in this arena.

The GLAAD awards are handed out by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against honoring mainstream works of television, cinema, comics, and journalism that they consider to have done an outstanding job of depicting the LGBTQ community and the lives of those within it. Other nominees in the wide-release feature category are Cloud Atlas, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Your Sister’s Sister. The GLAAD nominees in the Outstanding Comic-Book category were: Astonishing X-Men by Marjorie Liu (Marvel), Batwoman by W. Haden Blackman, J.H. Williams III (DC Comics), Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Andrew Chambliss, Scott Allie, Jane Espenson, Drew Z. Greenberg (Dark Horse), Earth 2 by James Robinson (DC Comics) and Kevin Keller by Dan Parent (Archie Comics).

In addition to winning several year-end critics choice awards, ParaNorman is also one of the features nominated in the Oscar race and the Annie Awards this year.
