Magic Light Brings Beloved ‘Gruffalo’ & ‘Zog’ Characters Back in BBC Idents

Magic Light Pictures, the multi-Oscar-nominated production company, has been providing festive family treats to BBC audiences for more than a decade. This year, the production company has brought back a host of author-illustrator team Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much loved characters to take over BBC One’s Christmas idents, alongside the BBC One premiere of Zog and the Flying Doctors.

This exclusive festive collaboration will feature idents of Zog, Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout, the unlikely flying doctor team, enjoying festive adventures. Alongside these, there is a tender moment between The Gruffalo and his daughter, The Gruffalo’s Child, as they go back to the snow covered clearing at the edge of the deep dark wood and dress their magical Christmas tree. “Magic Light Pictures have exclusively created a set of unique animated idents, especially for BBC One this Christmas featuring Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s wonderful characters, that I hope will make everyone smile and bring a big dose of festive cheer and togetherness at the end of a tough year,” said Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer, BBC.

Martin Pope, Co-Founder Magic Light Pictures, added, “We love partnering with BBC One and this project was conceived from a conversation between us last year. An earlier ident Magic Light produced with The Gruffalo’s Child in 2011 had proved a real hit and we were both excited to revisit the opportunity. It’s particularly wonderful to have created these extra animations this Christmas and we’re delighted to share them with BBC audiences.”

The idents are produced by Barney Goodland with executive producer Martin Pope for Magic Light Pictures, with key creative partners from the animated specials, including animators from previous films and the enchanting musical score from René Aubry. Animation services were provided by London studio Red Knuckles.

Zog and the Flying Doctors, starring Sir Lenny Henry and Rob Brydon will sit prominently in the BBC and BBC iPlayer schedule alongside other festive favourites and exclusive new offerings.

  • Back to the Croodaceous Period with DreamWorks’ ‘The Croods: A New Age’

Back to the Croodaceous Period with DreamWorks’ ‘The Croods: A New Age’

***This article was written for the January ’21 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 306)***

When DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods was released in spring of 2013, audiences around the world embraced the film’s lovable prehistoric family and their wacky world. Directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, the colorful film went on to make over $587.2 million worldwide and received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. This holiday season, audiences can catch up with Grug, Ugga, Eep, Thunk, Guy and Gran in a new sequel, in which the family sets out to find a safer place to live and come face to face with another human family.

The Croods: A New Age is directed by Joel Crawford, a DreamWorks veteran who worked on Trolls and the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and is produced by Mark Swift (Captain Underpants: The First Epic MovieMadagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted). During a recent phone interview, Crawford talked about the rewards of helming a new chapter in the lives of characters he fell in love with about seven years ago.

    Joel Crawford
    Joel Crawford

“I was a huge fan of Chris Sanders and loved the characters and the world that Chris and Kirk DeMicco had created in the first movie,” says Crawford. “When I was given the opportunity to direct the sequel, I felt it was my duty to approach the movie as a fan, knowing which things I wanted to see more of — to treat it as a big celebration that this family is back. Something that was very helpful to me was that Chris Sanders was kind enough to give me notes on the early version of the script. He gave me the handoff, and I was able to retain his sensibility while adding my own take on his vision.”

    Growth Patterns

Among the many things that excited Crawford about the movie was that it picks up where the audience left the characters at the end of the original outing. “We see how the relationship between Eep and Guy grows from puppy love into a real one,” he notes. “The world around them is changing and the family dynamics is also evolving, and we all know that Grug doesn’t deal with change very easily. It’s hard for him as a father to see his little girl grow up, but he has accepted Guy as part of his pack.”

    The Croods: A New Age
    The Croods: A New Age

Crawford says in the past few years, many elements of the scripts changed and evolved, but the heart of it all stayed the same. “The fact that the Croods were going to meet another family that was more evolved than they were was part of the script in one of the earlier drafts of the script,” he says. “But the relationship between Eek and Dawn, the daughter of the other family, changed. There was actually jealous and catty, and had a love triangle with Guy — but that seemed very formulaic. And when you come think of it, Eep has this wide-eyed curiosity, so we felt that she wouldn’t be jealous of another girl her age. She would celebrate her and see their differences as a great thing. So, we had a lot of fun emphasizing the girls’ friendship instead of having it be about Guy.”

    The Croods: A New Age
    The Croods: A New Age

The director mentions that he also loves that the film is set in such a crazy and fantastical era, which is dubbed the Croodaceous period. “The background and the whole set piece which is the Earth during this time between time — is so fantastic and epic,” says Crawford. “This is a period when the world was trying to figure itself out, like an awkward teenager! So we have all these offbeat, hybrid animals to play with once again.”

Like the first feature, the movie offers a memorable collection of animals that are goofy combinations of familiar creatures, like a wolf-spider that looks a huge, ferocious arachnid but is actually sweet and endearing like a dog. “The theme of the movie is about not passing judgment on people who are different from you, as the Crood family see one thing initially, but soon realize that there is more to it than meets the eye,” explains Crawford. “For example, they come across this beautiful forest that looks like it’s full of trees with the changing colors of the fall, but then it turns out that the colorful leaves are actually a swarm of giant prehistoric butterflies that take flight. There are a lot of fun surprises like that for the audience, and they all echo the message of the movie which is to ‘Look deeper!’”

    The Croods: A New Age
    The Croods: A New Age

Since it has been seven years since the first movie came out, the visuals for the sequel have also advanced, allowing the animators and the technical team to fine-tune many aspects of the first outing. “Everything looks better across the board, and I was constantly amazed at what our production designer Nate Wragg and visual effect supervisors Betsy Nofsinger were able to achieve,” notes Crawford. “Our animators have so much better control posing the characters and hitting these iconic silhouettes, including the shapes of the mouths, and so many other details. They were able to add so much more subtlety and stylization that made everything much more appealing. The film’s lighting really blew me away as well. It’s incredible how rich their world can look without it being photoreal and overpowering the senses. Betsy and Nate are an amazing creative duo, and were always able to offer solutions that would help us achieve the desired looks. They constantly exceeded my expectations.”

    Nate Wragg
    Nate Wragg

Wragg, who attended CalArts with Crawford, says he welcomed the chance to work with his old friend from college. “Joel and I had known each other for years, but we’d never worked on a feature together, so this was a fun opportunity,” says Wragg, who has worked on a wide range of movies, including Puss in Boots, Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. “We were able to approach the design in a fresh way and cherry-pick everything that we loved about the first movie. We also wanted to advance the story and build upon the world that was established in the original feature. The goal was to maximize the opportunity to up the appeal and the style of this prehistoric, action-adventure fantasy, and we got to check all those boxes.”

Wragg points out that in a sequel, you have to offer something that the audience or the characters haven’t seen before. “That’s why audiences can look forward to unpredictable, surprising animal mash-ups like a cross between a mouse and an elephant, or a chicken and a seal! He adds, “Since the family is living on the road, their mobile unit could go anywhere, so we began to think about some environments that the family had never encountered before, like that butterfly forest that at first glance looks like a New England in the fall, but then it lifts up and flies away. We described their world as National Geographic magazine on steroids. For example, we were inspired by the giant thermal pools in Yellowstone park, which display a wide range of colors. But in the Croods world, we have rivers and canals with the same color palette as we suggest that maybe millions of years ago, there were many more examples of that. We were trying to create a certain amount of natural logic and rules for their world.”

According to Wragg, DreamWorks’ new, state-of-the-art renderer allowed for the film’s impressive attention to detail in terms of tactile surfacing and rigging. “Animators are able to achieve a lot more and the characters end up being more brilliant and spectacular,” he notes. “We are also able to maintain this high quality of lighting in every shot. For this movie, our goal was never to simply mimic reality. You want the audience to feel the world and these environments were tactile enough that you could just step into the screen. Our biggest challenge was to continue to maximize the appeal of the designs without reinventing the wheel. We wanted to have the best versions of Grug or Eep or Gran, but we didn’t want them to look like new characters.”

    Hilarious Reaction Shots

Januel Mercado, the sequel’s head of story, was also a huge fan of the first Croods feature and its directors. “Of course, the fact that the movie is set in a cool prehistoric world was a big draw for me as well,” he notes. “We all love Grug, although he can be quite an idiot sometimes, but he has a big heart, and I also like the great dynamic he has with his daughter.”

Mercado, who directed the Nickelodeon show Harvey Beaks and was story artist on movies such as The LEGO Movie 2, Trolls, Penguins of Madagascar and Turbo, says he is quite pleased with the way the creative team were able to really push the comedy in the sequel. “We took a page from comedies like Arrested Development, which are quite character-driven,” he says. “You can have a big cast of characters, and you know their points of view, and what they want or are thinking about. Oftentimes, great comedy comes from the characters’ reaction shots to things that happen to them or others. Of course, there are serious dramatic elements woven in as well.”

Mercado says it was really important for him and the rest of the team to make sure the movie was ultimately a really fun ride. “Not only do we want the audience to be emotionally engaged with the characters and their plights and relationships, but we want them to relate to the film on the simplest levels — to just kick back and enjoy the colorful, whimsical prehistoric landscape, all the animals and the fun family adventure.”

Crawford also credits DreamWorks for being one of the last animation studios that has its whole design and production pipeline in house. “Nothing really compares to having a meeting with the animators and throwing out ideas and acting and joking together,” says Crawford. “I love that collaborative experience. Even when we had to switch to the work-from-home model because of the pandemic, everybody worked through the challenges and we were able to finish the movie and use technology and communicate remotely. It’s really impressive to witness how animation has been less affected than other parts of the entertainment field in terms of production. People can now move and live in other parts of the country or the world and still work remotely on the same project.”

    The Croods: A New Age
    The Croods: A New Age

The helmer wraps the interview by summarizing the heart of the story: “Our movie is about two different families who realize that their future is brightest when it’s shared together,” Crawford concludes. “I think that’s a very sweet and timely message about embracing each other despite our differences. I also hope everyone laughs a bunch when they watch it with their family and friends. Finding and embracing joy is something that we all definitely need right now.”

DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age opened in select theaters on November 25 and will arrive on PVOD in December. The movie reportedly made over $1.85 million in its first day of release (playing in only 2,211 U.S. theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic).  The film went on to gross $14.2 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Aardman, Cats Protection Unveil Tear-Jerking Christmas Campaign

Multi award-winning independent studio Aardman has teamed up with the U.K.’s leading feline charity Cats Protection and TV presenter Holly Willoughby for the charity’s Christmas campaign “Casper’s Magical Journey,” inspired by the true story of a young boy and his missing cat. The beautiful three-minute animation launches today (November 25) on social media, with shorter versions airing on TV during December.

Five-year-old white cat Casper went missing from his home in Plymouth in 2017, much to the distress of owner Anna Day and her 12-year-old son Daniel. Three years later, Casper turned up 55 miles away at Cats Protection’s Cornwall Adoption Centre near Truro and, thanks to his microchip, was able to be reunited with his overjoyed family.

    Casper's Magical Journey
    Casper’s Magical Journey

“We were all heartbroken when Casper didn’t come back, particularly Daniel. We never expected to see him again after such a long time, so it was miraculous to get him back home,” said Anna Day. “The whole family is so excited that Casper’s story is being immortalized in this way – and hopefully it will encourage more cat owners to consider getting their pets microchipped.”

Willoughby, who provided the voiceover for Anna in the video, said: “Casper and Daniel’s story is so lovely and, as a cat owner, it really struck a chord with me. It was a pleasure to be involved with such a wonderful project.”

Aardman were approached by Cat’s Protection to help take their established creative concept to the next level, applying their award-winning production values and storytelling expertise to the charity’s 2020 campaign.

    Casper's Magical Journey
    Casper’s Magical Journey

Aardman director Lucy Izzard was delighted to help share Casper’s story: “Such an epic true life story — going missing for three years and being found 55 miles from home — gave us so much scope to build an animated story. The hardest part was keeping it short as there was so much we wanted to do with it! It’s not often we get to bring ‘real world’ narratives to life at Aardman, so we really relished this unique opportunity and were particularly excited to add a bit of Christmas magic into the mix!”

“Our Christmas animation is always a heart warmer, and we felt that Casper and Daniel’s story deserved the extra magical touch that Aardman always bring to their films,” said Cat Protection’s Director of Communication, Judith Barnard. “They’ve tapped into that special bond between a cat and its owner which brings such joy but also heartache when a much-loved cat goes missing. Casper’;s tale will hopefully inspire more owners to microchip their mogs!”

According to Cats Protection’s CATS report 2020 (compiled by Basis Research), over a quarter (26%) of owned cats in the U.K. are not chipped. The charity is actively campaigning to change this by making it a legal requirement for cats to be microchipped, as it is for dogs.

Cats Protection was founded in 1927 and now boasts a national network of about 230 volunteer-run branches and 37 centers, helping approximately 200,000 cats and kittens every year.

  • Producer Aubane Fillon Joins Média-Participations France

Caroline Duvochel, CEO of the French studios under Groupe Média-Participations (Ellipsanime Productions, Dargaud Media, Dupuis Edition & Audiovisuel, Ellipse Studio) has appointed a new producer to strengthen its creative team. Aubane Fillon joined the Group in early November, and is charged with overseeing development and producing new animated series and feature film projects.

After graduating from Gobelins, Fillon began her animation career at Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, working on the feature film Santa’s Apprentice. She returned to France in 2010, joining Gaumont Animation as production manager on the series Galactik Football, Pok & Mok and the feature The Magic Snowflake.

In 2013, Fillon joined Sacrebleu Productions in the development unit, overseeing six shorts and the pre-production of the movie Long Way North. In 2014, she became head of the Artwork unit at Studio 100 Animation, in charge of promotion and communication for the series Vic the Viking and Maya the Bee before managing production of the series K3. • Zodiak Kids Secures Commission for New ‘Mumfie’ Series

Zodiak Kids Secures Commission for New ‘Mumfie’ Series

Zodiak Kids, part of Banijay, has secured a commission from France Télévisions and Rai (Italy) to produce a brand-new animated series of the heritage property Mumfie (78 x 7’). The series, directed by the French director Daniel Dubuis, is a co-production between Zodiak Kids Studio France and Italian animation studio Animoka alongside the broadcasters. Production began this year with delivery from Spring 2021.

“Zodiak Kids and Animoka are very proud and privileged to be able to explore Britt Allcroft’s Mumfie preschool universe; made of friendship, humor and amazing characters!” said Benoit di Sabatino, Producer & CEO, Zodiak Kids. “Mumfie is a very cute and high-quality animated series tailor-made for our two prestigious partners, France Télévisions and RAI, as well as for the international market.”

Mumfie is a preschool comedy series based on Britt Allcroft’s Magic Adventures of Mumfie (creator of Thomas & Friends and the film Thomas & The Magic Railroad). Told with heart and humor, the brand-new series features the optimistic young elephant Mumfie, who along with his best friends, Pinky the flying pig and Jelly Bean the color-changing jellyfish, are the helpful heroes of this whimsical series. As our trio embark on their daily adventures you’ll get to meet their eclectic bunch of animal friends: a cheeky crocodile who thinks he’s a king and his mischievous cat confidant; there’s a hermit crab mayor and a giraffe who runs a hotel on an iceberg; you’ll see a jolly yellow whale and a skateboarding zebra, as well as some pirate wolves and a Greek chorus of funny frogs. In this world, nothing is quite what it seems and no matter what challenges arise, no flop, failure or fiasco is unfixable for Mumfie and his friends.

“France Televisions is proud to welcome Mumfie in its preschool family. Mumfie will join the Okoo community, France Télévisions’ youth offer, alongside with our great heroes such as Simon, PJ Masks, Peppa Pig and many others,” said Pierre Siracusa, Head of Animation for France Télévisions. “With their positive attitude, mischievousness and altruism, there is no doubt Mumfie and his friends will enhance our children’s curiosity!”

RAI Ragazzi Head Luca Milano commented, “We are confident that the new series, for the kindness of its main character Mumfie and for the brilliant and imaginative universe created around it, will become a pivotal property for Rai Yoyo, the leading Italian children’s TV channel. We are happy to support the project since the beginning together with quality-oriented companies like Zodiak Kids and Animoka.”

Allcroft’s Mumfie was a beloved and classically animated children’s musical series, first shown in the U.K. in the 1990s on CiTV, Fox Kids in the U.S.A., and many other international channels. The series was lauded for its gentle storytelling and earned top ratings.

“I’m delighted to be working with Benoit di Sabatino, Gary Milne, and all the talented team members at Zodiak Kids and Animoka,” said Allcroft. “It’s an honor to know that France Télévisions and Rai are committed to bringing this renaissance of Mumfie to a whole new generation of children around the world.”

Zodiak Kids own international distribution rights to the series.

  • Annecy Festival Residency Projects Revealed

    Annecy Festival Residency Projects Revealed

Last June, CITIA, the organizers of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, announced the creation of the arts residency “Graphic development for animation feature film” with backing from the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Département de la Haute-Savoie, the CNC and France Télévisions – a new milestone in the shared history between the Annecy region and animated film.

During the summer, 32 projects were submitted, from 17 countries: France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Georgia, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Hungary, India, Dominican Republic, Serbia, China, Turkey, Mexico and the Philippines. Because the three-month residency for graphic treatment is intended to enrich the narrative, the maturity of the script was one of the criteria for the selection process.

A wide range of genres were represented, from mainstream projects to projects from more independent authors. An eclecticism that drew passionate discussions between the Selection Committee members: Sara Wikler (Artistic Film Producer, Blue Spirit, Script Consultant), Damien Brunner (Producer, Folivari), Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec (Director), Marc Bonny (Distributor) and Pierre Siracusa (Director of the Animation and Young Audiences’ Unit, France Télévisions).

“This selection commission at the Annecy Festival residency is a major first. It was difficult for us to choose those who will be the pioneers,” the committee shared in the selection announcement. “Among the diverse range of projects submitted by these passionate and creative artists, we had to identify who would put this experience to good use. Our three winners have profiles that are as unique as they are promising. The qualities of their projects guarantee very original first films and are a testament to how animation film is conducive to communicating our times. Let’s hope that this residency’s cocoon enables them to blossom fully.”

The Advisory Committee brought together Catherine Puthod (Head of Film, Audiovisual and New Media, Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), Aurore Fossard De Almeida (Visual Arts Project Manager, Département de la Haute-Savoie) as well as Marie Le Gac (Head of Development, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma).

    The three projects selected are:

    Piece
    Piece

Piece by Alan Holly (Ireland), a modern animated drama about societal pressures and anxieties and their impact on young people. The project follows seven adolescents who question themselves and the world around them.

    Heirloom
    Heirloom

Heirloom by Upamanyu Bhattacharyya (India), a family tale that follows the life and rise of the young Solal over almost fifty years and pays tribute to centuries of textile traditions in India.

    Le Cœur à danser
    Le Cœur à danser

Le Cœur à danser by Pierre Le Couviour and Amine El Ouarti (France), a fictional story set in Brittany, about a young girl who takes it upon herself to organise a big party to celebrate the village’s men returning from the war. But, there’s no way of knowing if her father is among them. Her encounter with the legend of the City of Ys will guide her.

CITIA will invite a member of the team from each of these projects to Annecy, from April 5 to June 27, 2021.

  • Trailer: Return of the Mini-Mack in ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’

Trailer: Return of the Mini-Mack in ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’

DreamWorks has unveiled the official trailer to The Boss Baby: Family Business, the follow-up to 2017’s Oscar-nominated CG comedy. The preview finds brothers Tim and Ted (a.k.a. the Boss Baby) grown up and estranged, but thanks to Tim’s no-nonsense talking baby daughter and a proprietary re-babyfication formula, the family is quickly toddling off on another madcap corporate espionage adventure!

The Boss Baby: Family Business is slated for a theatrical release on March 26 through Universal.

Synopsis: The Templeton brothers — Tim (James Marsden, X-Men franchise) and his Boss Baby little bro Ted (Alec Baldwin) — have become adults and drifted away from each other. Tim is now a married stay-at-home dad. Ted is a hedge fund CEO. But a new boss baby with a cutting-edge approach and a can-do attitude is about to bring them together again … and inspire a new family business.

Tim and his wife, Carol (Eva Longoria), the breadwinner of the family, live in the suburbs with their super-smart seven-year-old daughter Tabitha (Ariana Greenblatt, Avengers: Infinity War) and adorable new infant Tina (Amy Sedaris, Netflix’s BoJack Horseman). Tabitha, who’s at the top of her class at the prestigious Acorn Center for Advanced Childhood, idolizes her Uncle Ted and wants to become like him, but Tim, still in touch with his overactive youthful imagination, worries that she’s working too hard and is missing out on a normal childhood.

When baby Tina reveals that she’s — ta-da! — a top secret agent for BabyCorp on a mission to uncover the dark secrets behind Tabitha’s school and its mysterious founder, Dr. Edwin Armstrong (Jeff Goldblum), it will reunite the Templeton brothers in unexpected ways, lead them to re-evaluate the meaning of family and discover what truly matters.

Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel also reprise their roles as Ted and Tim’s parents.

Building on the success of the first film, which earned more than $500 million worldwide, The Boss Baby: Family Business is directed by returning filmmaker Tom McGrath and is produced by Jeff Hermann (Kung Fu Panda 3).

  • ‘Holy Grail’ Original Peanuts Art Heads to Heritage Auction

‘Holy Grail’ Original Peanuts Art Heads to Heritage Auction

At this late date one would think there’s little left to surprise about the work of Charles Schulz. His illustrated offspring have been ubiquitous in our hearts and minds almost since the first Peanuts strip appeared in newspapers in October 1950 and spread quickly from a handful of papers to 350 million readers worldwide. Thanks to museums and merchandising, animation specials and auction events, hardback celebrations and paperback collections, one just assumes we’ve seen all that The Man Called Sparky created 70 years after A Boy Named Charlie Brown weathered his first indignity.

But in its Dec. 11-13 Animation Art event, Dallas-based Heritage has one of the earliest-known Peanuts pieces drawn by Schulz: the artwork made in 1953 for a promotional giveaway almost entirely lost to history.

These gorgeous drawings of Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Schroeder, Patty, Violet, Shermy and Good Ol’ Charlie Brown were made for a newspaper freebie titled “The Peanuts Album,” and have never been seen in public or available at auction. Instead, they have resided with a longtime collector, who wishes to remain anonymous but is now ready to let someone else cherish these lovingly rendered portraits of eight comic-strip characters who feel like family.

“When I first saw it, I almost fell down,” says Jim Lentz, Heritage Auctions’ Director of Animation Art.

In the portraits, Charlie Brown wears his baseball cap and sports his oversized baseball glove. Lucy skips rope. Linus, without his blanket, stacks blocks. Schroeder plays his piano adorned with a bust of his beloved Beethoven. Violet stands ready to sell her Ready-Mix Mud Pies, while Patty, chewing on her tongue, shoots marbles. Shermy stands with hands in pockets, smiling. And Snoopy rests beside his doghouse to which he has affixed a television antenna.

Schulz’s “drawings were but scribbles, a few lines scarcely more elaborated than children’s stick figures,” newsman Walter Cronkite wrote in his introduction to The Complete Peanuts: 1953 to 1954, “but his genius was such that with those short few lines he created a panorama of life’s experiences suffered, or enjoyed, or tolerated by the inhabitants of a cartoon village.”

These eight portraits are quintessential Charles Schluz – “a kind of Holy Grail of his artwork,” Lentz says. “I knew instantly it was one of the most important pieces of Schulz art to surface.”

“The Peanuts Album” itself is remarkably scarce. For those wishing to lay eyes on a copy, it surfaces in the pages of Chip Kidd and Geoff Spear’s 2015 hardback collection Only What’s Necessary: Charles M. Schulz and The Art of Peanuts, which is full of rare illustrations from the Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Sandwiched between unpublished artwork and promotional pieces, “The Peanuts Album” receives a two-page spread in the book and a caption noting that “this promotional foldout booklet features early versions of the characters and a photo of Schulz and his family.” It says, too, that fans who wrote to United Feature Syndicate “would receive the two-sides mini-album, which was advertised in newspapers.”

The giveaway foldout contains more than just the eight drawings: There’s also a miniature biography of Schulz, detailing his hobbies (golf and bridge), his service in World War II (“as a machine gunner in Europe”) and his place of residence (Minneapolis, where “he gets to his studio at 6:30 A.M. to work on his daily strip and Sunday page”). There’s also a photo of Schulz and wife Jean and their three children Meredith, Craig and Charles Jr. At the time, the cartoonist was only 31 years old.

“When we found the giveaway album to go along with the artwork, it was a real eureka moment,” Lentz says. “There was no reason to believe this artwork existed. But here it is.”

And at just the right time!

On Nov. 20, during Heritage’s four-day Comics & Comic Art event, a Nov. 17, 1950, Peanuts daily strip sold for $192,000 – a new world record for Schulz original art. It was the earliest piece of his original art Heritage ever had the privilege of offering at auction.

The original artwork for “The Peanuts Album” is hardly the sole Charlie Brown piece in Heritage’s Dec. 11-13 Animation Art event. All told, there are more than 40 lots ranging from original animated drawings to cels to books signed by Schulz.

From the iconic A Charlie Brown Christmas, the most heartbreaking and heartwarming animation special ever created for prime-time TV, comes one remarkable original animation drawing. It features no less than Charlie Brown and his unloved tree perched upon Schroeder’s piano, adorned with the signature of the special’s director Bill Melendez.

From that same immortal Christmas special comes a remarkable two-fer: a Melendez-signed animation drawing and its accompanying color model cel in which Charlie Brown ill-advisedly seeks psychiatric help from Lucy at her booth. There, the doctor is “real in” at five cents a pop (psychiatry).

No less beloved is 1966’s It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, from which there is a rare production cel featuring Lucy as a witch (because “a person should always choose a costume which is in direct contrast to her own personality,” she would insist) and Pig-Pen as a ghost surrounded by his ubiquitous cloud of dust. Charlie Brown is also featured in a production cel from the 1985 CBS special You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

All that and much, much more joins the event’s centerpiece item: that original artwork for “The Peanuts Album,” which may never again come to market.

“I can’t stop looking at it,” Lentz says of the framed collection of portraits. “You can see the care he took in each portrait – the details, the shading, the sentiment. You can just see how much Schulz loved those characters. It’s just a magical piece.”

  • Craig Miller Named WGAW’s 2020 AWC Animation Writing Award Honoree

TV animation writer and WGAW Animation Writers Caucus Chair Craig Miller (The Smurfs, Curious George, Pocket Dragon Adventures) will receive the Writers Guild of America West’s 2020 Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award at November 24’s virtual AWC awards ceremony.

Comic-book writer and Miller collaborator Marv Wolfman will present the Guild’s AWC career achievement award to Miller in recognition of his distinguished career and contributions to the animation field.

“In his long distinguished career, Craig has been a tireless advocate for the writers of animation, working diligently to get writers like himself covered under a WGA contract. The WGAW Board of Directors is proud and honored to give him this well-deserved award.”

Los Angeles native Craig Miller achieved degrees in Child Development and Social Psychology from Santa Monica College and UCLA before launching a career that hits every corner of the pop culture landscape.

Miller started his career in Hollywood as a publicity executive, working as a consultant to Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., Disney, Universal and a host of other studios. Miller quickly found himself working alongside George Lucas, Jim Henson and a number of creative powerhouses on a long list of projects including The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Crystal and The Muppets Take Manhattan.

For the past 30 years, however, Miller has been writing, developing and producing television with well over 300 credits to his name, including Showtime anthology series The Hunger, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and Beast Wars: Transformers (which won a Daytime Emmy in 1997). Having contributed to classic animated series such as The Real Ghostbusters, The Smurfs and Emmy-winning PBS series Curious George, the impact and influence of Miller’s work stretches through generations of artists and creators who grew up watching his material.

In 1998, along with Wolfman, Miller co-created, produced and was a story editor on Pocket Dragon Adventures, a 104-episode series that happened to be the first animated series to go into production under the WGA contract. The syndicated show aired from the late 1990s into the early 2000s in over 50 countries and was nominated for the Humanitas Prize — awarded for film and television writing intended to promote human dignity, meaning and freedom — in 2000.

A regular speaker on writing for animation, Miller has spoken and taken part in animation events all over the world, including the Annecy Animation Festival in France, Cartoons on the Bay/The International Conference on Television Animation in Italy, and the San Diego Comic-Con, just to name a few.

These days, Miller spends much of his time developing projects for companies around the globe, working on shows for audiences in China, Australia, France, Italy and Dubai. His book about his time at Lucasfilm, Star Wars Memories, was released in December 2019.

A WGAW member since 1988, Miller has served the Guild extensively over the years, and is currently the Chair of WGAW’s Animation Writers Caucus.

The WGAW’s AWC Animation Writing Award is given to members of the Animation Writers Caucus or Writers Guild who have advanced the literature of animation in film and television throughout the years and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the animation writer. Founded in 1994, the WGAW’s Animation Writers Caucus represents over 600 animation writers and works to advance economic and creative conditions in the field. Through organizing efforts, educational events and networking opportunities, the Guild’s AWC is a leading proponent for animation writers.

Previous AWC Animation Writing Award honorees include David N. Weiss, Nicole Dubuc, Len Wein, Mike Judge, Seth MacFarlane, Sam Simon, Linda Woolverton, Len Uhley, Brad Bird, Matt Groening, Al Jean & Mike Reiss, Dwayne McDuffie & Earl Kress, Mike Scully, Patric M. Verrone and Stan Berkowitz.
