Mark Zavadskiy on the Evolution of Riki Group: ‘Our Universe Is Expanding’

Founded in St. Petersburg in 2003, Riki Group has grown into one of the leading lights of Russian animation, and built an international presence with hits such as its flagship franchise Kikoriki. Today, Riki Group includes a production center, a design studio, two animation studios – Petersburg Animation Studio and Aeroplane Production Center; Marmalade Media, a multi-brand licensing agency; 4Screens, a studio producing children’s game content for YouTube; a publishing house and other companies. We recently caught up with Mark Zavadskiy, CEO of Riki Group to find out more about how the company made the most of a challenging year – and what lies ahead.

    Mark Zavadskiy

Animag: Can you tell us what’s new at Riki this fall season?

Mark Zavadskiy: Firstly, this year started with the announcement about Riki Group’s consolidation of the shares of Aeroplane JSC together with its famous brand, The Fixies, which significantly strengthened the company’s portfolio and position in the market. This media assets consolidation deal marks another milestone in the growth strategy of the animation holding. Earlier, Riki Group acquired the Tina & Tony brand assets through an equity share purchase in Digital Television Company as well as the assets of the Riki Development Fund (more than 10 animation projects), with an equity share purchase from the Inter-State Development Corporation.

Secondly, all our flagship projects – namely The Fixies, Tina & Tony, BabyRiki and Kikoriki – have released new seasons in Russia, and for Kikoriki it’s for the first time in 10 years. As for our worldwide presence, it has been widened through to numerous new partnerships: Tina & Tony was acquired by Epic Story Media for U.S. and Canada, and Edutainment Licensing will distribute the series in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, as well as worldwide for school and library digital platforms. This fall, Tina & Tony premiered on France 5 and Brazil’s Gloobinho. The Fixies series went to P1KFILM SDN BHD in Asia and the features were taken by Amazon Prime, Tubi TV (owned by Fox Corporation), Pluto TV (ViacomCBS), Roku TV – they will be also shown in Poland by the most-watched channel, Polsat, and in Brazil on Gloob. PinCode and Kikoriki were also broadcasted in Israel (GHI Media) and Canada (ToonAVision). Moreover, Da Vinci Media took PinСode for its channels and VOD apps available in multiple territories, such as Russia and CIS, Poland, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Greece and Turkey.

Thirdly, we have actually entered into a large-scale strategic partnership with Yandex, Russia’s leading digital and tech company. And we are still anticipating more changes that will support our updated identification.

Which new shows are you offering at the fall markets?

While we have a dozen projects in development, we brought new preschool series Beardy Bodo to MIPCOM 2020. It follows the adventures of a hilarious character, Bodo, who knows nothing but he’ll teach anything and everything. This is a riotous series that teaches kids to read. Young viewers will be taken on a journey beginning with studying each individual letter and moving to reading exercises led by Bodo, a grouchy man with an enormous beard who doesn’t know how to read very well himself. Solving simple puzzles, playing games and stopping Bodo from hiding the letters, kids will soon be able to memorize the alphabet and improve their reading skills. Bodo’s ridiculous and misguided “teaching” is, of course, really all about activating kids to learn from content and the world around them, while having a good laugh and feeling pretty smart about being smarter than Bodo!

At MIPCancun and ATF we also present IPs in development. Last year, our Weatherville received the main prize of ATF 2019’s pitching. This is an educational series dedicated to the most unpredictable and discussed topic — the weather. Kids learn that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just like there’s no such thing as bad temper! In 2020 we bring educational comedy series Question Club, psychotherapy adventure comedy The Amazing Spoilers, and series Above the Ceiling for preschoolers.

Are you bringing any features to the AFM market this year?

Riki’s upcoming feature Finnick is now in production and international sales for the project are in full swing. Another project in production is an animation comedy by the director of Kikoriki under the title Teddy Boom, and it will be presented to the platforms as we plan to develop it as a digital release.

We heard about Riki’s new branding effort… can you tell us what’s new in terms of branding and partnerships with other studios around the world?

All the latest changes have led us to a new level, which demanded an updated approach to our style. Riki Group has launched an overall rebranding with changes to the company logo, visual design and brand philosophy. The dynamic transformation of the business structure and active development of Riki Group projects in both the Russian and international markets led to this redefinition of the company’s essence, values and mission. The rebranding process is being carried out in stages over the course of 2021-2022 and will eventually cover all aspects of the company’s operations.

As for the partnership, Riki has recently teamed up with leading Chinese companies. Youku Kids, a division of Alibaba Group, a global digital commerce company, participates in joint production of the second season of Tina & Tony. New episodes were released in China in August in the Youku Top 3 (leading position among foreign content according to the popularity index). The popularity of the project helped us to launch a licensing program in China this year. And Tencent Video, who previously had great success with The Fixies brand in China, now invests in the production of the fourth season. The first 18 episodes of the new season will be produced by December 2020 and the full season should be delivered by June 2022. The series will be released simultaneously in Russia and China. In addition, Tencent commissioned Hebei TV to create a new TV sci-fi game show for kids: Fixie Lab. Both deals are strategically important for the brand’s development.

Riki Group’s logo, before and after the 2020 rebrand.

What do you want the global animation community to know about Riki in 2021?

Riki Group supports a very important and promising trend by developing adult animation. This will not only lead our company beyond the bounds of kids and preschool content but will help to develop animation in Russia in this highly demanded direction. At the Russian ComicCon together with KinoPoisk HD, we announced the launch of the Riki.Lab competition for adult animated series projects. Talented authors and animators will have the opportunity to create unique projects for the Russian audience, and I hope for international as well.

We will also continue the work of our recently launched department of educational projects. It creates educational products aimed at learning the basic skills for life in a playful way, socializing the individual, popularizing science and scientific knowledge. Every year this direction is becoming more and more in demand and necessary, the consumption of children’s popular science content is growing, and the development of the digital environment opens up wide opportunities for the implementation of creativity. I suppose that next year we will present a new project that combines animation, game mechanics and offline presence.

Our studio is increasing its capacity in contract production. Riki Group partners with Roy Production in the making of the Super Meow series, which was previously named the largest investment deal in the Russian animation market. The studio plans to launch about 15 projects by 2025.

What does the Russian animation scene look like in late 2020 and what are some of the challenges you have faced in the COVID-19 era?

Obviously, the industry in Russia faced tough times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We faced difficulties in the transition to remote work, but thanks to new technological solutions, both studios continued to work without intermission. Moreover, Riki even reached record production volumes despite the pandemic. The development of the new projects also did not stop.

So, for example, new circumstances pushed us to a decisive transition to cloud technologies. Special effects in animation are challenging and require modern technologies. In our previous lives before the pandemic, we took it for granted that production was concentrated in the office. However, when we all switched to remote work we had to look for solutions to make the new home office of each of our employees equally technically equipped. And with the help of cloud technologies, that were provided to us by our partner from Yandex, we managed to do this. We’ve just finished this global transition, and, of course, it was gradual, as it took time to study and implement new technologies. We hope that our creative employees have hardly noticed any changes. We have tried to make this process as comfortable as possible and to preserve all their work habits.

The move to cloud technology has allowed us to take the worry out of storage security. Moreover, now we can increase production volumes at any time without planning in advance to buy new equipment for the office, since the clouds are available at any time and provide unlimited storage volumes. And it also allows us to seamlessly integrate into our production process unique specialists from different cities of Russia, and even different countries, due to the project management system deployed in the clouds, which was developed by us several years ago. It is unlikely that it will be possible to calculate the direct benefits of such a transition now: this is just a different way of life, new opportunities that will certainly manifest themselves in the near future.

Animation Guild Launches Virtual Holiday Market

The Animation Guild (TAG) launched its 3rd Annual Virtual Holiday Market on Dec. 1, showcasing the talents of the guild’s union members. This marketplace will run through Dec. 18 featuring unique and memorable gifts from pros behind popular animated TV shows and films.

“It was very cool to bring other creators out of the woodwork with the idea of a hassle-free marketplace, and even better to find that co-workers were excited to support artists by shopping small. The opportunity to make this a larger scale event with the help of The Animation Guild amplified all of those rewards,” said TAG member Ashley Long, one of the market’s organizers.

Shoppers will find stationary, plush toys, crossbody bags, comic books, 3D printer jewelry, sculptures, face masks, toddler clothing, aromatherapy, stickers, books and more — and a great way to “shop local” and support artists. A few of these diverse offerings include:

    • A screenwriter on The Angry Birds Movie 2 and SCOOB!, Jonathon E. Stewart is the founder of Java Stew Coffee. Based in Hermosa Beach, Calif., Stewart’s custom roasting company focuses on ethical brokers and growers who use safe, sustainable shade techniques and provide a fair wage.
    • Esther Barr spent more than 20 years as a special effects animator, but the past two decades have been devoted to distilling the essence of movement into her copper artwork. Finished with patina, torch-fired enamel or color oxides, Barr’s unique and striking creations are featured at her online gallery, Esther Barr Metalworks.
    • With credits including Captain America: Civil War and Trolls World Tour, Onesimus Neurnberger currently works as matte painter at DreamWorks Animation. Outside the industry he creates charming artwork for LaCorgi, where he sells prints, greeting cards, stickers and apparel inspired by his pet corgi, Georgi.

’16 Hudson’ Refugee Story Arc Set for Bilingual Launch in Canada

New year, new family! Season 2 of Big Bad Boo Studios’ inclusive animated series 16 Hudson is set to welcome a “newcomer” family in 2021. The introduction of this storyline will be marked by a simultaneous bilingual launch across Canada on January 24 and January 30.

The hit preschool plus series will feature a six-episode arc where audiences and 16 Hudson residents alike will be introduced to the Garmiany family. Hailing from Kurdistan, the Garmiany family arrives in Canada after living in a refugee camp. Over the course of the six episodes, the kids get to know and love their new friends, Rona and Ray, and learn a little bit about their background and culture.

16 Hudson is about embracing families from all backgrounds. The immigrant experience is a universal one and we are highlighting one family’s journey which mirrors that of so many other Canadians,” says series creator, Shabnam Rezaei. “This is as much a Canadian story as that of Amala or Sam, who were born here.”

According to the New York and Vancouver-based studio, this marks the first time a preschool series features a refugee family in its cast. To ensure authenticity and sensitivity towards the storyline, the 16 Hudson writing team worked with the Together Project during the development of scripts.

“TVOkids champions every opportunity for kids to learn about Canada’s rich cultural diversity at an early age through quality preschool programs like 16 Hudson,” says Marney Malabar, TVO Director of Kids TV. “We’re thrilled to be part of the launch of this six-episode story and hope it helps kids recognize the many diverse families in their neighborhood and that everyone belongs regardless of their background.”

“The lived experiences of refugee kids and their families are rarely shown on television. Radio-Canada is proud to open the conversation about these important issues, via these special episodes of 16 Hudson,” says Nathalie Chamberland, Senior Director of Youth Programming for Radio-Canada.

The Garmiany family episodes are set to premiere on January 24 on TVO Kids and ICI Radio-Canada and January 30 on Knowledge Network, as part of a larger campaign called #MyFamilyJourney. • Former Disney Animator Launches Parade VR with Oculus Short

Former Disney Animator Launches Parade VR with Oculus Short

Feel what it’s like to travel beyond the edge of the world in pursuit of your passions with Lifetime Achievement, a whimsical and relatable tale about the balance of work and family, proving that presence is the best present. Parade, an emerging VR animation studio based in Los Angeles founded by former Disney animator Yonatan Tal, developed the film in partnership with Oculus and used the company’s Quill platform for VR-native animation.

With a 15-minute run time, Lifetime Achievement is the longest narrative made entirely in VR using Quill to date.

”As a new VR studio, Parade took the opportunity to be boundless in its storytelling,” said Tal, Parade CEO and Lifetime Achievement director. “We wanted to create a visceral, immersive and emotional story that leverages VR animation to its fullest potential by bringing viewers into each essential part of our hero Albert’s journey.”

The film begins as you stumble upon a vivid wonderland of glittering designer jewelry and the most exquisite fashions. There, you meet Albert (voiced by Darren Jacobs, Death Stranding), a world-class French designer and boutique owner who welcomes you into his magical world. Though he moved continents away from home to follow his dreams, Albert’s fame and fortune cannot eclipse his devotion to his beloved mother (Marieve Harington, How I Met Your Mother). Your new friend is eccentric, but you’re compelled to follow him and learn more about his greatest masterpiece — a jewel he made for his mother’s 70th birthday.

    Lifetime Achievement
    Lifetime Achievement

Focused on searching for the finest materials and using the most avant-garde techniques in the galaxy to please his mother, Albert takes you deep into his memory. There, you befriend an albino crocodile in Africa, dive into an underwater cave in Indonesia to find rare crystals, develop new lifeforms in a special laboratory, and capture light rays from a solar eclipse in space. With his mother’s birthday around the corner and so little time, it’s easy to see how Albert lost sight of what matters most.

The film’s colorful narrative matches its animation style, delivering retro-inspired aesthetics with a wildly contemporary palette and futuristic environments.

Parade’s debut immersive film is an original story by Tal, inspired by his own immigration experience. He left his friends and family in Israel to follow his dreams of studying character animation at CalArts and working in Los Angeles in animation development for Disney. Lifetime Achievement highlights the importance of being present in your loved ones’ lives, touching on universal and cross-generational themes such as self-realization, immigration, and the challenges of maintaining a real-life presence with family in a technologically advanced world.

Parade was founded in 2019 after Tal left Disney, where he storyboarded a multitude of projects such as Amphibia and Monsters at Work, and was honored as one of Animation Magazine’s Rising Stars of 2018. Ziporen Hazum is the company’s creative producer, bringing more than 10 years of experience in production for television, commercials, location-based entertainment, nonprofits and more. Together, they lead a diverse team of storytellers from France, Switzerland, Canada, Israel and the U.S., who quickly mobilized to produce Parade’s first immersive VR film with more projects pushing the boundaries of VR to come.

Lifetime Achievement premiered in the Quill Theater for Oculus on Friday, December 4. Learn more about Parade at www.paradeanimation.com

  • ‘Clash’ Short ‘Lost & Crowned’ Scores Oscar Qualification

‘Clash’ Short ‘Lost & Crowned’ Scores Oscar Qualification

Lost & Crowned, the CG animated short film from Spanish writer-director Borja Peña Gorostegui, has qualified for Oscar consideration. The production team revealed the news Tuesday.

“It has been a true honor working on Lost & Crowned with this team of incredibly talented and passionate artists who poured everything they had into our labor of love,” said Gorostegui. “Growing up as an older brother, I experienced and learned from the same lessons that Peter and Larry are faced with in the film (except for the dragons and explosions!), and I treasured and even obsessed over some of my favorite childhood adventure films like E.T., The Explorers and Goonies. Hopefully our little film can inspire our audiences in the same way that the films I watched growing up did for me.”

Inspired by mobile game co. Supercell’s “CLASH” Universe, Lost & Crowned spotlights the beautiful cinematics, visual effects and animation of its creative content producing studio, Psyop. The film is the first for the award-winning Gorostegui as both writer and director, in addition to being the first of Psyop’s films to qualify for Oscar consideration.

“I’m so grateful for the incredible team who brought our short to life,” said Lost & Crowned producer Amanda Miller, from Psyop. “Their extraordinary level of craft and artistry shines in every frame under Borja’s direction. It’s an honor for us to join the other animations qualifying for consideration, and I’m thrilled our “little” film is now about to find new audiences to love it!”

Lost & Crowned was released worldwide on Sept. 12, 2020, and wracked up over 100 million views across all platforms in the first two months online. It had previously finished its qualifying run under the amended AMPAS Oscar 2021 COVID rules.

Learn more about the sweet and comical short in our BTS post here!

A consummate visual storyteller, Gorostegui’s previous work has also garnered hundreds of millions of views online and won several awards, including The One Show, AICP & Addy awards. As Gorostegui worked for some of the top independent studios, his “Swiss Army knife” set of skills led him to be designer, lead compositor, 3D animator, CGI generalist, technical supervisor and project lead, and ultimately a writer and a director. In 2012, he accepted a Director position with Psyop, honing his craft as a storyteller while working with high end brands, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Supercell, Nintendo, Samsung, Frito-Lay, McDonald’s, Red Bull, Chobani, PlayStation And Delta Airlines.

GKIDS Unveils Rocking New Trailer for ‘On-Gaku’

Meet the band from Kenji Iwaisawa’s punk-inspired animated feature in the new trailer for On-Gaku: Our Sound, coming to select North American theaters through GKIDS on December 11. Winner of the Nelvana Grand Prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and selected for Annecy, the 2D flick — animated almost entirely by director Iwaisawa — follows a group of disaffected youths on a musical mission.

Synopsis: When you’re a bored teenager looking for thrills, sometimes the only thing you can turn to is rock ‘n roll. Having no skill, money, or even a full set of drums, a feared trio of high school delinquents nevertheless decide they are destined for musical glory in a quest to impress their only friend Aya, avoid a rival gang, and – most importantly – jam out.

Featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto, On-Gaku: Our Sound brings its own sound and vision to the Hiroyuki Ohashi manga from which it was adapted. With pitch-perfect deadpan humor, the film presents a highly original take on the beloved slacker comedy: a lo-fi buddy film with a blaring musical finale that will leave you wanting an immediate encore.

  • Gillian Anderson, Richard E. Grant Lead ‘Robin Robin’ Cast

Gillian Anderson, Richard E. Grant Lead ‘Robin Robin’ Cast

Netflix and Aardman announced the voice cast for upcoming stop-animation musical holiday special Robin Robin, which is currently in production at Aardman’s award-winning studio in the U.K. and will debut on Netflix in time for the holidays in 2021. Golden Globe winner Gillian Anderson (The Crown) and Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) lead the cast, which also includes Bronte Carmichael (Christopher Robin) and Adeel Akhtar (Enola Holmes).

The special follows Robin, a bird who is taken in by a loving family of mice when her egg fortuitously rolls into a rubbish dump. As she grows up, her differences become more apparent. Robin sets off on the heist to end all heists to prove to her family that she can be a really good mouse – but ends up discovering who she really is.

    • Bronte Carmichael will voice Robin. When her egg falls from the nest, Robin is adopted by a family of mice, and raised as one of their own. Not quite a bird and not quite a mouse, but full of determination. Robin sets out on an adventure to prove herself and just maybe, get a sandwich.
    • Adeel Akhtar voices Dad Mouse, a caring but cautious soul who is single-handedly raising a family of five children (one of them happens to be an adopted bird).
    • Richard E. Grant will voice Magpie, an obsessive collector of shiny ‘stuff’. Magpie takes Robin under his ‘wing’, on a journey of self discovery. Underneath his many ruffled feathers he really is a good egg.
    • Gillian Anderson voices Cat. The villain of our story who just so happens to know a place where everything is welcome, her tummy!

“We’re completely thrilled with the array of talent who have agreed to help us make our vision for Robin Robin a reality,” said creator/director Mikey Please, who won a BAFTA for the student animation short The Eagleman Stag. “Bronte has incredible warmth in her voice and we feel so fortunate to have her at the heart of the film. When Richard signed up, we had to pinch ourselves. We’d had pictures of Withnail pinned to our development wall throughout the writing and designing of his character and, having now worked with him, remain convinced that if he were to have a spirit animal, it’d be a magpie.”

“We’ve been fans of Adeel ever since his perfect turns in Four Lions and Utopia and he brought that perfect mix of awkwardness and impeccable timing to Robin Robin. And very few people have the ability to authentically purr like a cat. Fantastically, Gillian is one of those blessed few. Having Gillian purr and snarl at us was one of the most thrilling experiences of our lives thus far,” added creator/director Dan Ojari (Slow Derek).

Robin Robin is written by Ojari, Please and Sam Morrison, produced by Helen Argo (Tate Movie Project, Wallace & Gromit’s Musical Marvels) and executive produced by Sarah Cox (Tate Movie Project, BAFTA-nominated Heavy Pockets). The special features music and songs by British duo The Bookshop Band.

Netflix subscribers in the U.S. can stream Aardman Animations’ A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and Shaun the Sheep: Adventures form Mossy Bottom now, with additional titles from the Oscar-winning studio available internationally.

Robin Robin will join Netflix’s growing family-friendly animated slate, which includes Sergio Pablos’s Klaus, Kris Pearn’s The Willoughbys, Glen Keane’s Over The Moon, and forthcoming projects including Clare Knight and Harry Cripps’ Back to the Outback, Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Adventure, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

  • Disney Confirms ‘DuckTales’ Will Not Return for S4

Disney Confirms ‘DuckTales’ Will Not Return for S4

Despite a valiant fan petitioning effort online, the 2017 rebooted DuckTales series will not get a fourth season from Walt Disney Television Animation. A Disney spokesperson issued the following statement Tuesday:

“The talented creative team, led by Matt Youngberg and Francisco Angones, have delivered exceptional storytelling with uniquely reimagined characters for three seasons of 75 episodes and more than 15 shorts. While physical production is wrapping, ‘DuckTales’ continues to be available daily on Disney Channels and Disney+ around the world and fans will get an epic season finale in 2021.”

Word of the cancellation first came from Drew Taylor at Collider, who Tweeted Dec. 1, “regretfully inform you that the show is very much done and has been done for a little while now.”

The series recently premiered a special holiday episode “How Santa Stole Christmas!” (guest starring Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville). On top of the hinted series finale, fans of Duckburg’s denizens can keep the homefires burning for the upcoming Darkwing Duck reboot, now in early development.

Inspired by the classic Disney comic book worlds created by Carl Banks and Jymn Magon, as well as the original Emmy-winning 1987 series, the new DuckTales debuted on Disney XD in 2017 to positive critical reviews and a warm audience reception. The reboot was developed by exec producer Youngberg (Ben 10: Omniverse) and co-exec producer/story editor Angones (Wander Over Yonder), with Sean Jimenez (Gravity Falls) as series art director.

The animated comedy-adventure chronicles the high-flying adventures of Duckburg’s most famous trillionaire Scrooge McDuck (voiced by David Tennant); his mischief-making triplet grandnephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie (Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz & Bobby Moynihan); temperamental nephew, Donald Duck (Tony Anselmo); and the trusted McDuck Manor team: big-hearted, fearless chauffeur/pilot Launchpad McQuack (Beck Bennett), no-nonsense housekeeper Mrs. Beakley (Toks Olagundoye) and her granddaughter, Webby Vanderquack (Kate Micucci), resident adventurer and the triplet’s fierce friend.

  • Sonia Manzano Series ‘Alma’s Way’ Coming to PBS KIDS from Fred Rogers Prod.

Sonia Manzano Series ‘Alma’s Way’ Coming to PBS KIDS from Fred Rogers Prod.

PBS KIDS today announced Alma’s Way, a new animated series from Fred Rogers Productions. The series is created by actor and writer Sonia Manzano, who positively impacted the lives of generations as “Maria” on Sesame Street, breaking new ground as one of the first Latino characters on national television and receiving an Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Alma’s Way gives children ages 4-6 the power to find their own answers to their problems, express what they think and feel, and recognize and respect the unique perspective of others. It is slated to debut nationwide on PBS stations, the PBS KIDS 24/7 channel, and PBS KIDS digital platforms in fall 2021.

“I am thrilled to return to public television and to work with PBS KIDS and Fred Rogers Productions on this project inspired by my own childhood,” said Manzano. “Alma’s way is to think things through, and I hope by animating the thought process, kids will be inspired and excited about what goes on in their own minds. I want them to know we all have the power to think regardless of who we are.”

“Sonia has been an important part of the PBS KIDS family for decades and we are so excited to be working with her on Alma’s Way,” said Linda Simensky, Head of PBS KIDS Content. “Sonia is naturally funny and perceptive, and she has created in Alma a heroine who is similarly able to confront challenges with humor and thoughtful intention. As kids join Alma, her family, and friends on their adventures, we hope they’ll also see themselves reflected in these characters and learn new things about one of the many beautifully diverse communities that exists across the country.”

The engaging modern-day series stars six-year-old Alma Rivera: a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl, who lives in the Bronx with her parents and younger brother, Junior, as well as a diverse group of close-knit and loving friends, family and community members. In each 11-minute story, Alma speaks directly to young viewers, sharing her observations and feelings, working through challenges, and offering them a window into her everyday life.

“We can’t wait for kids to meet Alma. She’s an optimistic and confident Puerto Rican girl who models for viewers how to think their way through any dilemma,” said Ellen Doherty, Chief Creative Officer, Fred Rogers Productions. “The show is funny, warm, and relatable. We love how it showcases the diversity of New York City, too, and authentically reflects the cultures of all the characters.”

In every episode, Alma’s Way aims to model self-awareness, responsible decision making, and empathy, encouraging kids to generate and value their own ideas and questions. As she uses “Think-Through” moments to stop, listen, and process in the face of a tough decision, Alma reflects and takes action while demonstrating social awareness.

Currently in production for 40 half-hour episodes, the series will also showcase different aspects of Latino culture through music, food, language and more. For example, viewers will see Alma help make mofongo, take part in a bomba show, and celebrate Noche Buena.

Alma’s Way is created by Sonia Manzano and produced by Fred Rogers Productions. Ellen Doherty and Manzano are executive producers. Jorge Aguirre (Goldie & Bear) is head writer. The series is animated by Pipeline Studios (Elinor Wonders Why).

Digital content for kids, parents and teachers, launching in tandem with the television show, will further the messages and goals of Alma’s Way. Series-inspired games will be available in English and Spanish on pbskids.org and on the free PBS KIDS Games App, along with clips and full episodes streaming across PBS KIDS’ video platforms, including the free PBS KIDS Video App. Parent resources, including tips and hands-on activities to extend the learning at home, will be available on the PBS KIDS for Parents site, and PBS LearningMedia will offer tools for teachers, including video excerpts, games, teaching tips and printable activities.

Cartoon Network Debuts New Anti-Racism PSA ‘Tell the Whole Story’

Cartoon Network is releasing a second anti-racism PSA developed by Emmy-nominated Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, creator of O.K. KO! Let’s Be Heroes, aimed at providing kids and families with productive ways to disrupt the common narratives about racism.

The latest PSA, titled “Tell the Whole Story,” features Steven Universe’s Pearl (voiced by Deedee Magno Hall) and is set to debut Thursday, Dec. 3 on Cartoon Network’s YouTube channel and across the network’s social media platforms. “Tell the Whole Story” explores how Black inventors, heroes and leaders are often left out of history and challenges the viewer to ask themselves as they’re learning – who is telling the story?

“Tell the Whole Story” was developed in partnership with Dr. Kira Banks, a clinical psychologist whose research examines the experience of discrimination, its impact on mental health, and intergroup relations. She is co-founder of the Institute for Healing Justice and Equity and served as a racial equity consultant for the Ferguson Commission. Her vodcast Raising Equity explores what it looks like to intentionally raise children with an equity mindset – the knowledge and understanding of systemic inequities and to equip them to create an equitable society rather than accept the status quo.

  • Epic Games Releases Unreal Engine 4.26

Epic Games Releases Unreal Engine 4.26

Epic Games today released Unreal Engine 4.26, delivering powerful new tools that extend the ability of creators to craft believable real-time environments and characters for games, film and TV, visualization, and training and simulation, as well as continued advancements to Unreal’s industry-leading virtual production toolset, higher-quality media output, improved design review tools and much more.

Highlights of the 4.26 release include:

    Unreal Engine 4.26
    Unreal Engine 4.26

More convincing animated characters – Hair and Fur is production-ready in 4.26, delivering the ability to edit, simulate, and render true strand-based hair, fur, and feathers. Hair and Fur now features a new Asset Groom Editor for setting up properties, and compatibility with features such as DOF and Fog. LOD generation is built in, and users are now able to generate cards and meshes for lower-end hardware in-engine as an experimental feature.

Adding further believability to their characters’ movements, users can now create animations in Sequencer by blending animation clips such as motion-captured data; the workflow will be familiar to animators who’ve worked in other nonlinear animation editors. Animators can preview skeleton animations to easily see how one skeleton blends into the next, and match joint placement for a smooth transition between clips. The feature is integrated with Control Rig, which now offers an experimental full-body IK solution in addition to the standard FK/IK.

    Unreal Engine 4.26
    Unreal Engine 4.26

Immersive natural worlds and environments – Unreal Engine 4.26 introduces a new Volumetric Cloud component that is able to interact with Sky Atmosphere, Sky Light, and up to two directional lights, improving the quality of both realistic and stylized skies, clouds, and other atmospheric effects. The atmosphere can receive volumetric shadows from meshes and clouds; lighting and shadowing updates in real time to reflect time-of-day changes. In addition, there’s a new Environment Lighting Mixer window that enables all components affecting atmosphere lighting to be authored in one place.

This release also sees the introduction of a new Water system, enabling artists to define oceans, lakes, rivers and islands using splines. Users can adjust and visualize the depth, width and velocity of rivers along their lengths, and the wavelength, amplitude, direction and steepness of waves on oceans and lakes. The system includes a new Water Mesh Actor that uses a quad tree grid to render detailed surfaces up close, smoothly transitioning to simplified ones at distance. Built-in fluid simulation enables characters, vehicles, and weapons to interact with the water; the fluid also responds to Terrain, such as reflecting ripples off the shore, and reacting to river flow maps.

    Unreal Engine 4.26
    Unreal Engine 4.26

Extended virtual production toolset – Unreal Engine 4.26 leverages technology such as NVIDIA’s NVLink, which enables data to be transferred between two GPUs at very high speed, in order to support the increasing number of pixels on today’s LED volumes. This allows any viewport to be rendered on another GPU; for example, one display-facing GPU would render the entire scene while another handles the inner frustum, passing the pixels back to the first one.

The 4.26 release also introduces a new fully REST-compliant Remote Control API that enables users to easily collect and organize any parameters or function libraries from the Unreal Engine UI into customizable presets. These can be used in a panel in the Unreal Editor, or seamlessly connected to widgets — such as radial dials, sliders or color pickers — in web applications, without coding. For example, this could enable an artist on a virtual production stage to easily change the sky rotation or the sun position from an iPad. This feature also benefits broadcast and live events teams who may need to make changes remotely in real time.

    Unreal Engine 4.26
    Unreal Engine 4.26

Enhanced high-quality media output – Movie Render Queue lets users create high-quality frames with accumulated anti-aliasing and motion blur for film and television, cinematics and marketing, and extremely high-resolution images for print. 4.26 adds new features to Movie Render Queue, now making it possible to output render passes including matte IDs, camera motion vectors, Z-depth, ambient occlusion, reflections and more so that users can refine their images in a downstream compositing or photo editing application.

Movie Render Queue also now supports OpenColorIO (OCIO), enabling users to work in any color space while ensuring that their image will look as intended on its target platform. In addition, 4.26 delivers new support for exporting multi-channel EXRs, Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR codecs, and Final Cut Pro XML EDLs, as well as the ability to integrate render farms.

More effective collaborative design reviews – Users will see significant usability and performance improvements in the Collaborative Viewer template that enables multi-user design reviews on VR/AR/Desktop, both enhancing the collaborative design review process and allowing more users to join a session. In addition, there’s now support for voice communication between participants over VOIP using in-engine peer-to-peer protocols.

…And more! – Unreal Engine 4.26 also offers new improvements to the Chaos physics tool, ray tracing, new GPU Lightmass, a completely new Virtual Camera system, enhanced DMX support and new Datasmith exporter plugins for Rhino and Naviworks.<  See the full release notes and get started with Unreal Engine today at unrealengine.com/blog/unreal-engine-4-26-released.

Watch: Award-Winning Luca Toth Short ‘Mr. Mare’ Debuts Online

Luca Tóth’s second independent short film, Mr. Mare premiered at the distinguished Berlinale festival in 2019. Since then, it has screened at 90 festivals around the world, winning 12 awards — including the Oscar-qualifying Børge Ring Award, presented by Danish animation society ANIS at the Odense International Film Festival.

Mr. Mare is a surreal animated chamber play, set in a ‘haunted’ claustrophobic space, in which we witness the dynamics of unrequited love as we follow the relationship of an oddly codependent pair. Looking at an X-ray image a young handsome man is horrified to learn that the weird, tumor-like lump on his chest is the top of a tiny plump man’s head. Nested in his body, he is waiting to be born…

The Hungarian-French co-production has also been awarded Best International Short Film at Fabiofest in Bratislava, the Best Short Film award at Viborg Animation Festival in Denmark, the Grand Prix at Mecal Pro – Barcelona International Short and Animation Film Festival, and won the Jury Award at Bucheon International Animation Festival in South Korea. The film was in competition at Ottawa International Animation Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Fantoche and GLAS Animation Festival among others.

The nearly 20 minute long short film was co-produced by Boddah (producers: Péter Benjámin Lukács, Gábor Osváth) and Sacrebleu (producer: Ron Dyens). The visual aesthetics and most of the animation was created by the director. The film’s sound design was made by Péter Benjámin Lukács, and the music was composed by Csaba Kalotás.

  • ‘Willoughbys’ Producer Luke Carroll Joins Relish to Build Features Slate

‘Willoughbys’ Producer Luke Carroll Joins Relish to Build Features Slate

Industry veteran Luke Carroll, producer of Netflix’s animated hit The Willoughbys is joining Relish Interactive in the newly created role of SVP, Animation. Carroll will have a dual role and act as SVP, Development for the studio’s original content division — Wasabi Entertainment. Wasabi is currently developing a slate of originals with the first feature film, Shadowrail Circus, already in pre-production.

Taking place within the popular Weirdwood universe (which now includes an award-winning app and novel series with a TV show now in development), Shadowrail Circus tells the story of young Lettie Donough who unknowingly unlocks her dormant magical abilities and is thrust into service with a troupe of fantastical circus performers who are pursued by a sorcerous Pirate Queen.

The film, slated for release in 2022, will leverage the Unreal Engine to further enhance Relish’s CG pipeline that aims to shorten production time and lower costs while maintaining cinematic quality.

In addition to producing The Willoughbys, Netflix’s first original CG feature, Carroll produced Escape from Planet Earth for The Weinstein Company as well as Bron Animation’s first animated feature, Henchmen. Prior to joining Bron as VP of Production & Development, Carroll produced numerous feature-length projects for Mattel Inc.

“Relish has such an impressive track record in combining great creative with the latest technology,” said Carroll. “To be able to apply this knowledge to a slate of wildly exciting animated feature films is an unbelievable opportunity. The fact that we get to do this on Vancouver Island is beyond incredible.”

Working closely with Carroll is Relish and Wasabi CEO Paul Pattison, who added: “We’re delighted to have Luke join the team. Not only will his experience producing animated features prove invaluable, but we share a common vision for building an artist-driven studio that puts story first while also pushing technical boundaries. We want to capture imaginations, touch hearts, and tell unforgettable stories that will inspire a new generation.”

Relish has been on a tear this year. It acquired Costa Rica-based Rocket Cartoons in January and opened a new Duncan, BC-based animation studio just last month. Most recently, it received a MegaGrant from Epic Games (the developer of Unreal Engine) to support the integration of Unreal into their upcoming productions.
