Klasky Csupo, the legendary independent animation studio responsible for era-defining television programming like The Simpsons, Rugrats, Rocket Power, All Grown Up, Wild Thornberrys, Aaah! Real Monsters and many more, is back with an all-new digital series called RoboSplaat.
RoboSplaat had already amassed a global cult-following before his animated webisodes premiered on the Klasky Csupo Official Instagram page during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting this weekend, all-new episodes of RoboSplaat will premiere on the Klasky Csupo YouTube Channel and Official Instagram page twice per week and continue into early 2021. Klasky Csupo has created over 100 mini episodes of RoboSplaat, and the series is off to a great start with lots of love from fans that grew up with Klasky Csupo cartoons.
RoboSplaat
RoboSplaat will also appear in the new game Splaativerse, where players take a photo, record their voice prompted by a question and choose from a list of surprise sound effects which are all woven into Splaat’s cartoon. The engaging, chain storytelling app has 30 stories designed to be played limitless times and will be available for download soon.
Studio co-founder Arlene Klasky initially thought of the idea after Klasky Csupo’s partnership with Nickelodeon came to an end in 2006. While researching online, she realized kids from all over the world were creating mashups of the iconic Klasky Csupo animated logo at the end of Rugrats. This sparked an idea — Klasky, along with designer Sergei Shramkovsky, took the robot and put arms and legs on him. The result was an opportunity to birth a new character and bring him to life in his own online series.
To voice the RoboSplaat character, Klasky turned to her longtime friend and collaborator Greg Cipes, the prolific actor, musician and producer, whose voice has given life to the iconic, animated superhero Beast Boy for two decades across Teen Titans, Teen Titans GO!, Young Justice, DC Superhero Girls, and many more DC Superhero franchises. He is also known as the voice of Michelangelo in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and as Kevin Levin in Ben 10, among his hundreds of roles. Cipes voices the RoboSplaat character and hosts Talk Cereal; a live, weekly interview series, speaking with fellow voice over actors, via the @RoboSplaat Instagram channel.
Arlene Klasky / Greg Cipes
Klasky and her boutique team now run a full time animation development, producing and consulting business. They’ve been working on RoboSplaat completely from home as are the rest of the animation studios in Los Angeles.
“The feedback on Instagram from animation fans that grew up on Klasky Csupo shows has been enormous. They seem to be uplifted by RoboSplaat‘s offbeat personality, humor and nostalgia for their childhood. While Gabor [Csupo] and I were producing our series, we never dreamed the lasting impact our shows would have on those kids,” said Klasky.
“It’s so important, now more than ever, that we use our voices to promote uplifting messages of positivity, understanding and friendship,” said Cipes. “This is what Klasky Csupo has always stood for, and I am both humbled and inspired to champion that cause through the mouth of the iconic RoboSplaat.”
Viacom has greenlit a revival of Rugrats for the big and small screen with a reboot of the series for Nickelodeon in production. Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain will return as executive producers on the series.
New episodes of RoboSplaat drop every Wednesday and Saturday at 9 a.m. PST on Instagram (@robosplaat) and YouTube. Talk Cereal live with @Gregcipes airs every Monday at 11 a.m. PST on Instagram.

AMC Studios has revealed the lead voice cast for its upcoming animated primetime drama, Pantheon — an hour-long adaptation of Ken Liu’s short sci-fi series which received a two season (eight episodes each) order back in March.
The show will star Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), Rosemarie DeWitt (Little Fires Everywhere), Aaron Eckhart (Midway) and Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora), working with creator/exec producer Craig Silverstein (TURИ) and consulting producer Liu to bring to life a world where human consciousness joins the cloud as “Uploaded Intelligence” or “UI.”

The stranger turns out to be Maddie’s recently deceased father, David, who has been uploaded to the cloud following an experimental brain scan. The first of a new king of being, an Uploaded Intelligence, David will not be the last, as a global conspiracy threatens to trigger the next evolution of world war.
Indie studio Titmouse (Big Mouth, The Midnight Gospel, Mao Mao, Heroes of Pure Heart) is producing the animation, which is described as a fresh take on graphic realism created in traditional 2D with modern tools.
Taylor Schilling has received two Golden Globe nominations for her performance as Piper in OITNB and was recently seen in supernatural thriller The Prodigy. She also played Nurse Veronica in TV series Mercy.

ACCESS:VFX, an industry-led non-profit coalition of leading visual effects, animation and games studios, announced the launch of a new West Coast chapter. The global non-profit organization is building upon its mission to promote diversity within the VFX industry by expanding to the U.S. West Coast and providing practical tools for up-and-coming creatives that are essential to succeed in the industry, including mock interviews, reel reviews, virtual events and e-mentorships.
Kathleen Ruffalo and Ann Hoang
Led by co-chairs Kathleen Ruffalo, Recruitment Manager, U.S.A. at Framestore, and Ann Hoang, Head of People & Culture, L.A. at The Mill, the West Coast chapter’s first steps will be to promote initiatives such as its Slack mentoring scheme, industry apprenticeships and awareness-building events, and partner with local schools and organizations within the L.A. community. With other founding members including FuseFX, Ghost VFX, Luma Pictures, Pixomondo and Zoic Studios, the chapter hopes to extend its outreach to not only students within L.A. and surrounding communities, but those already working in the industry that have been furloughed or laid off due to the current pandemic.
“I’m thrilled to be involved with the launch of the West Coast chapter of ACCESS:VFX — a long-awaited addition to the ACCESS network,” said Ruffalo. “With the current climate, there’s never been a better time to encourage inclusion and diversity within the VFX, animation and games industries, which have historically struggled with a lack of representation of people from minority backgrounds.”
Established in 2017 to encourage diversity under its four pillars of Inspiration, Education, Mentoring and Recruitment, ACCESS:VFX is an industry-led coalition of 50 leading media and entertainment companies. ACCESS has successfully united passionate people around the common goal of addressing the lack of diversity in the VFX industry. Members include Epic Games, Cinesite and Foundry, among others. Together they run industry events and reach thousands of potential future employees of primary school age and above across the U.K., U.S. and Canada, working with organizations including We Are Stripes (www.wearestripes.org.uk), Into Film (www.intofilm.org) and This Ability (www.thisability.co).
“There’s been a pointed call to action in the U.S. and ACCESS:VFX hopes to play a part in the solution for those in the VFX industry,” said Hoang. “ACCESS does great things for young, up-and-coming creatives and our industry, but more work needs to be done to educate students about the diverse career paths within the industry outside of being an artist. Tech and supporting roles are just as important in our line of work.”
ACCESS:VFX’s West Coast chapter joins ACCESS locations across the U.K. and North America, including Montreal, New York and Chicago.

Directed by stop-motion animator Kat Alioshin (The Nightmare Before Christmas) the 68-minute doc features interviews with festival founder Craig “Spike” Decker, his partner the late Mike Gribble, who died of cancer at age 42 in 1995, and a rich selection of animation greats whose early films were included in Spike & Mike’s animation collections throughout the years: Danny Antonucci, Bruno Bozzetto, Pete Docter, David Fine, Joan Gratz, Seth Green, Mike Judge, Peter Lord, Mike Mitchell, Kenn Navarro, Marv Newland, Nick Park, Everett Peck, Joanna Priestley, David Silverman, David Sproxton, Andrew Stanton and Will Vinton. Animation historian/author Jerry Beck and enthusiastic fan Weird Al Yankovic are also among the talking heads featured in this lively and loving tribute.

We were very pleased to chat with Decker and Alioshin about Animation Outlaws and Spike & Mike’s contribution to the animation short scene:
Animag: Can you tell us how the documentary came about and why you agreed to participate?
Spike: Kat worked with us in the late ’80s. I trusted her and knew she had the chops to create a professional doc. I had been approached from a few other sources, but I knew Kat worked in animation on Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach and would be able to find all the right people.
What are some of the best memories you have from the early Festivals of Animation?
People that came to our shows expected to have a good time. We gave them more than their money’s worth. They were blown away by all the talent and entertainment. We turned it into a counterculture event with a very diverse audience.
Craig “Spike” Decker
What do you think of the fact that many of today’s leading forces in animation today got their first breaks in your animation collection?
We believed in these animators when they were 19, 20, 21-year olds. We had watched so many short films from around the world and we knew a keeper when we saw it. We knew that we could help them create a finished film if we helped them finish inking and painting the cels. A big deal was having the cels filmed on 16mm and then 35mm. We had to help them pay for it or no one would have been able to see the finished film.
What was your criteria for picking the shorts that were included in the festivals?
Humor has always been a main criteria. Then we looked for films that had a beginning, middle and end. Sometimes not always in that order. There is an ebb and flow to curating the entire 90 minutes, so it wasn’t always about picking a single film, but a group of films that complement each other. We looked for highly creative and artistic and beautifully rendered shorts
Bambi Meets Godzilla
What was it about those early festival experiences and films that made them so special?
Mike was a comedian. He was the best MC. He really got the crowd worked up and made them feel special. I had a pet Scottie dog named Scotty the Shredding Wonder Dog. When he came out on stage, the crowd went wild as he chased the balloons and then popped them. We sold T-shirts and posters and had many of the directors at the shows signing the posters. It was the same vibe people get from today’s Comic-Cons. The fact that we turned it into a special event. The high energy and quality of the films. We knew how to please the audience.
What do you think of today’s animation scene and shorts festivals?
It is very easy now for anyone to create a short and get it out to a lot of people through social media. I don’t follow any of the short animated film festivals now. There isn’t the same sense of urgency to have a festival in a town for two weeks and need to have sold-out shows to pay for the rental of the theater. There is great animation out there still and you can see it as an individual piece. What is lacking in today’s animated shorts is seeing them curated in a context of a 90-minute program and including the artists that make the shorts so they can share their process of making it with an audience.
What do you think Mike would have thought of this documentary?
Mike was a showman. He would have loved to see that a festival he helped create in 1977 was getting recognition for what it really was: an incubator for bigger films to come from these talented filmmakers who were given a chance to experiment and get their films in front of large audiences instead of just fellow students.
How are you keeping busy these days?
I keep busy working the stock market, working out, researching holistic health practices, working on finding viable and lucrative deals.
What are your favorite animated shorts and movies of all time?
Allegro non Troppo by Bruno Bozzetto, Vincent by Tim Burton, Key Lime Pie by Trevor Jimenez, Happy Tree Friends by Kenn Navarro and Erica Russell’s beautiful film Feet of Song.
What do you home audiences will take away from the documentary?
They should see how Mike and I started from nothing and created a genre where none existed. That we never took large corporations’ money and we persevered with the street-style marketing. We dug deep in our pockets and paid for a film to be finished and then put it in front of millions of eyes.
How do you see the future of Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation?
I want to merge or have the brand acquired. The company would have me stay on to do the curating/networking/finding new content that I feel I do better than anyone. I built a huge library of content with a broad spectrum of RIGHTS that I want to monetize.
The film’s director Kat Alioshin also answered a few questions:
What inspired you to make this film?
Kat: I met Spike & Mike in 1985 in La Jolla, at a restaurant where I was waitressing. They were being obnoxious with their entourage, throwing ice cubes, demanding individual catsup bottles. Being the youngest of six siblings, I knew I could handle a table of wild ones. It so happens I fit right in.
I became part of their entourage and started promoting with them. Promoting is very hard work when you are not using television or regular advertising. We handed out 1,000 flyers at every college campus, concert, wrestling match, theaters and anywhere there was a line. I worked the box office at La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art for their two- to four-week runs.
In Jan 2017, Spike was in S.F. and we met at Cha Cha Cha’s. He was whining about no one doing a documentary about the Festival of Animation. He said he had been approached but the people that wanted to do it had no interest in animation. The light bulb went off right then, because I had spent the last 25 years in animation and I had worked for them. I was a perfect choice to share their story. Spike inspired me to make this film. My desire to show his dedication so that he can get credit where credit is due.
Kat Alioshin
Why do you think it’s important to tell this story at this moment in time?
Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animationand Sick & Twistedopened doors for countless animators who have gone on to create some of the most beloved animated films. They created opportunities for a niche genre – short animated films that did not exist. Animation Outlaws can be used in animation history classes to show where many artists were given the opportunity to create. Going to a theater to sit for two hours and watch 15 to 20 short films does not happen anymore. It is important to show that this was a way that audiences discovered and viewed films.
Can you talk about the dynamic between Spike & Mike. How did they operate in synergy?
These two schmucks were polar opposites. Mike was a book buyer. He knew authors and quoted from books. He had taste in fine wines. He loved to travel the world. Spike has a fear of flying, and only picked up a newspaper to read a critique of the Festival. He doesn’t drive and doesn’t drink. Mike is the front man, the introducer of the show with insights and backgrounds to all the animators. Mike was welcoming and engaging. Spike was the behind-the-scenes guy and is not entirely approachable. He made the money deals and used his large size and gruff voice to keep order. With all their differences, they made a completed perfect pair. Their combined efforts are why the Festival lasted 40 years. (Though Mike passed in 1994, Spike uses the legacy of Mike to continue.)
What tools did you use in production or post to create the mood and tone of the film?
It was intentional to have the interviewee speak in front of an animation clip. I use 65 animation clips to expose the viewer to the many different styles of film but also, in the case of the interviewee, to have them “inside” their work. This process meant that I had my director of photography, Carl Miller, light and shoot against greenscreen. I wanted as much animation in the film as possible. We have stop-motion animation with the Spike puppet, and then the 2D style with the early years in Riverside at the Mellow Manor. Then we see the 2D style again during the anecdotes.
Nick Park
I could not find any footage of the food fights and water wars, so we drew them instead. I used a Bay Area fab team of three women, Cindy Ng, Kris Toscanini and Lyla Warren. Another animation technique was used to bring to life the flyers during the title sequences. The flyer art was a big deal to me during the promotion. I was so proud to hand out flyers with incredible work on the cover. I wanted to make sure we see the flyers more than once, and it made visual sense to use the flyers as the segment title cards. An Oakland company called Sneaky Little Sister added the motion graphics to the photos we found. My intention was to steer away from talking heads and still photographs and keep images “breathing” and lively.
Music is a main tone activator. I asked a high school friend who happens to run a successful post music house to compose the music for me. John Nau of Beacon Street Studios took my verbal notes about how I wanted the music to be and wrote fantastic mood music. I wanted a punk rock edge to one of the pieces and it made sense to me to ask Sarah Shelton of The Brand to give me a piece of her work. She worked for Spike and I interviewed her. She recently passed since the filming – rest in power.
What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing Animation Outlaws?
I hope they gain an appreciation of the hard work it took to find a film and promote it guerilla style, day in day out, on the street, and learn that hundreds of people went to see short films in a sold-out theater. Hard work came from two regular guys out of Riverside who knew what great animated entertainment was and how to engage an audience by creating an event atmosphere. There was no other place to see short animated films and Spike & Mike created a genre where none existed.

41 Entertainment LLC (41E) announced today that HBO MAX in the U.S. has taken First Window Exclusive SVOD rights and Super RTL in Germany has secured Exclusive Content rights for German-speaking Germany, Austria and Switzerland, to its new animated series S.M.A.S.H! (52 x 11’), slated to launch globally in 2022. Discovery Family Channel and Discovery Familia in the U.S. have secured exclusive linear rights.
Where do superhero kids – and their super-powered pets – go to learn to use their powers and save the day?
S.M.A.S.H. is a one-of-a-kind sleepaway camp located on Lake Sebastian in Bavaria, Germany, where four amazing kids with superpowers from all corners of the globe – Streak (from St. Petersburg, Russia), Rocket (Cape Town, South Africa), Flare (Glasgow, Scotland) and Vitória (São Paulo, Brazil) – are preparing to become the next generation of superheroes. And their super-powered dogs – Felicity, Lightning, Blaze and Rio – are training to fulfill their destinies as superhero sidekicks.
At the center of this super heroic action team is Mei Lien, a clever and charismatic mechanical genius from Guangzhou, China. Mei Lien is the Camp S.M.A.S.H. equivalent of James Bond’s “Q”, and even though she doesn’t have superpowers, this Super Camper is super smart, and she’s constantly inventing customized vehicles and accessories for her teammates – often with the help of her mechanical pet, a puppy-like A.I. named “Ping.”
Created and executive produced by Allen Bohbot, based on an original idea by Kaaren Lee Brown, developed for Television by Kaaren Lee Brown and Kiersten Halstead and illustrated by Mel Bontrager, S.M.A.S.H! is planned to launch in 2022 worldwide from the same creative and production team as the international hit Super Monsters.
“We have built a great team of writers to bring the S.M.A.S.H! adventures to life, including Josh Haber (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Skylanders Academy, Spider-Man) and Eric Rogers (Skylanders Academy, Futurama, Brickleberry). We are also fortunate to have a fantastic production team to build out the Camp S.M.A.S.H! world,” says Halstead. “Each episode focuses on fun and engaging superhero adventures that require teamwork, problem solving and a sense of humor.”
Nancy Koff, VP – Sales and Marketing. added, “It is thrilling to be announcing an initial lineup of such stellar international broadcasters. The response from the market to S.M.A.S.H! has been very encouraging and we look forward to announcing additional broadcasters and platforms soon. We believe the property is attractive to customers worldwide due to the high quality CG animation, cultural diversity of characters and earnest storylines, which revolve around the children honing their skills and powers, while realizing how much they still need to learn in order to become a superhero like their parents Torpedo, Silver Streak, Rocket Man and Flame.”
