An entirely new futuristic universe unfolds in Hyper Scape, created by Ubisoft and glimpsed in a new cinematic game trailer produced by Warsaw-based Platige Image. Working under COVID-19 restrictions, the studio envisioned a three-minute tour of the real and virtual worlds of the year 2054, tasking 130 artists to the project and creating over 200 assets to satisfy the needs of the cinematics.
At its core, Hyper Scape is an intense, fast-paced and vertical free-to-play FPS Battle Royale, but it’s also a brand new IP with a rich lore, an original story and a cast of unique and diverse characters. The cinematic trailer introduces the global narrative of Hyper Scape that will be developed season after season.
Platige Image has been involved in this cinematic trailer project since the very beginning, from the work on the script to setting up dynamic animation in line with the high-octane pace of the in-game action. One big focus was the creation of the hyper-realistic model for the main characters.
“We became involved in this project very early in the global production of the game. We had access to its very first versions, and then to a constantly updated build at Ubisoft’s headquarters in Montreal,” said director Bartek Kik. “So, you might say that, together, we went through all the exciting but challenging phases of building of a new IP. We received a large dose of understanding, trust, and positive feedback at every stage of the production.”
“For the mocap session, we spent five days on the set, withtwo2 days for capturing the main elements and one day for try out, one for additional photos and another for the faceware session,” noted CG producer Agata Bereś. “It was really key to showcase fluidity and dynamism in the movement, so we worked with the amazing Maciek Kwiatkowski and two fantastic parkour artists: Monika Mińska and Jakub Grossman.”
Maintaining the animation-producing process after the pandemic was declared was one of the biggest challenges. Despite this unusual situation, work on the project was not interrupted and was carried out on schedule.
“The trust received from Ubisoft is a reason to be proud and also a great responsibility. We are glad that, in this difficult time, we were able to commit to such an outstanding production,” said Piotr Prokop, Business Development Director at Platige Image.
The CGI trailer was released with the announcement of the game’s official PC Open Beta. The full launch of Hyper Scape is planned for later this summer on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Platige Image has previously created trailers for Ubisoft titles Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, Rainbow Six Quarantine and Watch Dogs 2.
DreamWorks Animation today announced that the studio has entered into a multi-year deal with Walt Dohrn, director of the recently released Trolls World Tour and co-director of Trolls, which grossed more than $346M globally. The announcement was made by Margie Cohn, President, DreamWorks Animation.
A longtime DreamWorks talent, Dohrn will have an overall first-look exclusive deal for original animated projects at the studio along with executive producing, directing, development and supervisory duties on various projects.
“For over 10 years, Walt has been a key part of the DreamWorks family,” said Cohn. “His singular vision and sensibility is a part of our DNA and we’re happy to have his creative energy dedicated to both creating future DreamWorks franchises and mentoring the next generation of talent.”
“DreamWorks has been my home for many years and I have such a tremendous amount of respect for all the artists who day-in and day-out continue to push creative boundaries in storytelling,” said Dohrn. “I am looking forward to sharing details about my next project and continuing my collaboration at the studio with Margie.”
Walt Dohrn
As one of DreamWorks Animations most trusted story experts, Walt Dohrn
most recently directed Trolls World Tour and previously served as co-director on the smash hit Trolls, and as head of story on Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Shrek Forever After. A multi-talented artist, Dohrn has on many occasions lent his voice to various characters in previous DreamWorks Animation films, most recently as King Peppy in Trolls World Tour and Cloud Guy in Trolls.
In Shrek Forever After, he made his debut as a voice performer in a leading role, bringing to life the conniving and hilarious villain Rumpelstiltskin. Perfecting the character’s performance came naturally to Dohrn, as he additionally served as head of story for the film. In that capacity, Dohrn was responsible for supervising the development of the film’s plot, working in close collaboration with director Mike Mitchell and supervising a team of story artists.
Since joining DreamWorks Animation in 2002, Dohrn also contributed to the story of Rise of the Guardians, Shrek the Third, Madagascar, Shark Tale and Shrek 2. In addition, Dohrn wrote the lyrics for the songs “Final Showdown” (Shrek the Third) and “Fairy Godmother Song” (Shrek 2).
Prior to joining DreamWorks Animation, he worked as a storyboard artist and writer. His credits include the critically-acclaimed audience favorites SpongeBob SquarePants and Dexter’s Laboratory.
Organizers of Norway’s Fredrikstad Animation Festival (FAF) have announced that in addition to the festivities to be held, for the 20th time, in the 16th century city, the 2020 event is adding a digital expansion to invite more animation fans around the world into the action.
Due to the unique challenges in planning a festival in the year of coronavirus, many international events have opted to go online. While FAF is still planning to go on in the physical world, it was decided that the time was right to explore FAF’s virtual potential.
“A digital addition to the festival program is something we have imagined would come sometime in the future. Now this year’s events have accelerated this development, which all the festival pass holders can benefit from,” said Festival Director Anders Narverud Moen.
Early Bird passes to this year’s festival gives access to both the festival events in Fredrikstad and the digital addition to the festival.
“We have chosen to price the Early Bird passes affordably due to the uncertainty surrounding the corona situation, and hope many will take advantage of this opportunity even though they may be hesitant to plan trips now,” added Moen. “Whatever happens, you will be able to enjoy the digital festival addition!”
The Man and the Head by Nilas Røpke Driessen, one of the films in competition at FAF 2020.
Fredrikstad Animation Festival is the leading animation festival in the Nordic region, now in its 20th anniversary year. One of the cornerstones of the festival is the Nordic-Baltic animated short film competition, with the awarding of the prize known as the Golden Gunnar. Each year, top animation industry professionals hold seminars and lectures, and the festival has previously hosted guests from famous studios such as Pixar, Disney and Aardman. The festival is a professional arena for the animation industry, as well as an important event for students and educational institutions within animation, graphic design and digital media production.
Writer-director Cory Edwards (Hoodwinked!, Krogzilla Gets a Job) has a new project in the works with Vanguard Films (Gnome Alone, Charming) and DNEG Feature Animation: the sci-fi comedy Doomstar: Janitorial.
Doomstar: Janitorial centers on centers on Gabe, a lowly janitor on a powerful space station. When his home planet becomes the station’s next target, Gabe and his blue-collar buddies spring into sabotage to stop it. With aliens on their tail and robots zapping them, they’ll clean up their most dangerous mess yet.
“This one is special. It’s a script I’ve been working on for a long time, something I’ve wanted to make for several years. It’s really my love letter to ’80s sci-fi, and pulling from touchstone comedies like Ghostbusters and Galaxy Quest,” Edwards told Deadline. “There will be lazy robots, there will be alien karaoke, there be janitors cleaning up acid blood. My goal is to fill the cast with as many funny people as possible and let them play a lot.”
Producers are Vanguard Animation’s John Williams (Shrek franchise) and DNEG’s Director of Feature Animation Tom Jacomb (Puss in Boots), who are also currently working on The Silk Road Rally in production with Riverstone Pictures, Kintop Pictures and ReDefine (a DNEG subsidiary) and repped by MadRiver International and CAA.
Peter Seaman (writer, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Shrek the Third) is executive producing Doomstar: Janitorial and contributing to story development.
Annie Award-winning artist Carter Goodrich (Open Season, Ratatouille, Despicable Me, Hotel Transylvania, The Croods) is handling character design.
Edwards is also writer and director on Vanguard / 3QU Media’s Fearless (formerly known as Super Awesome Mega Babies), which has been picked up by Netflix for an August 14 release. The pic shows what happens when two teens take on the hardest babysitting job in the world when three super-powered babies pop out of a video game.

Princess Elena’s heroic journey to become queen culminates in an star-studded prime-time finale special of Disney’s Emmy and Imagen Award-winning series Elena of Avalor, premiering Sunday, August 23 (7:00 p.m. EDT/PDT). New episodes leading up to the finale will debut every Sunday, beginning July 26 (5:00 p.m. EDT/PDT). All episodes premiere on Disney Junior and DisneyNOW.
Inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, Elena of Avalor premiered in July 2016 and tells the story of Elena, a brave and adventurous teenager who has been learning what it takes to be a great leader by ruling her enchanted fairytale kingdom as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen. The series, which airs in over 150 countries around the world, has been lauded for its messages of leadership and inclusiveness.
“It has been a tremendous honor for me to bring Disney’s first Latina princess to the screen,” said creator and executive producer Craig Gerber. “Everyone involved with Elena of Avalor, from the creative team to the unbelievable cast and crew, felt the responsibility to get this right. Jenny Slate, Mark Hamill, Fred Armisen and Andy Garcia guest star as the Four Shades of Awesome and Patrick Warburton voices Grand Macaw, ruler of the dark side of the Spirit World.
The finale also features returning guest voice cast members Constance Marie, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jaime Camil, Justina Machado, Gina Rodriguez, Mario Lopez, Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, John Leguizamo, Cheech Marin, Whoopi Goldberg, Cloris Leachman, Chrissie Fit, Tyler Posey, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Kether Donohue, Nestor Carbonell, Andrea Navedo, Eden Espinosa, Ana Ortiz, Gina Torres and Gaby Moreno, who also sings the series’ theme song.

Bour is co-producer and supervising director, and Pilar Flynn is producer. John Kavanaugh is the series’ songwriter/music director, Tony Morales is composer, and Rene Camacho serves as Latin music consultant. Director Scott Sava shares some sketchbook images which chronicle his experience making the animated movie Animal Crackers.
Animal Crackers was my first movie experience as a writer, director and producer. Everything was new. Flying out from Nashville to Los Angeles, New York and London to meet these legendary stars was incredibly intimidating, and I found myself retreating to my art from time to time to center myself.
I’ve always found it helps me cope with situations by drawing, so I keep a sketchbook with me everywhere I go.
Hearing Ian McKellen speaking words that I wrote from a story I created was just mind-boggling. Watching John Krasinski and Emily Blunt laughing and joking with each other because of a silly idea I had in my backyard is just insane. To be perfectly honest … the entire thing was surreal.
Fortunately, I had friends like my co-director Tony Bancroft (Mulan) and co-writer Dean Lorey (Arrested Development) with me who were seasoned pros. Jamie Thomason and Curtis Koller brought this amazing cast together and directed the sessions. I was in good hands.
I love to flip through my sketchbook and relive the moments I was able to capture in pictures and words. Sometimes I would only get a quick “doodle” done due to the hectic nature of a studio session and I would finish the sketch (complete with watercolors) when I returned to the hotel room that night. Other times, I could sit in a quiet corner and paint. Completely getting lost in the moment.
The production was a dream. It was everything I’d hoped it would be … and more. From 2014 to the beginning of 2017, it was “pure creative bliss” as I like to tell people. It truly was. It was the following three years that were the real struggle. Finding the right home for our passion project proved more difficult than we could have ever imagined. Thankfully, Netflix rescued us, and on July 24 the world can finally see our little film.

Oscar- and BAFTA-winning VFX studio Weta Digital, all-in-one technical production company Streamliner and indie film & TV studio Avalon Studios announce a new LED-stage virtual production service, based in their shared hub of Wellington, New Zealand. The service brings together live stage expertise and expert screen production capability to offer a new production methodology.
The recent growth in real-time visual effects capabilities, along with the health and safety benefits of working in New Zealand, prompted the three elite players to put together a ready-to-use package for productions of all sizes.
“Adding LED stage capabilities to Wellington’s Avalon Studios adds yet another compelling reason for productions to consider shooting in New Zealand,” said Weta Digital Executive Producer David Conley. “LED stages are the latest technique to take advantage of game engine technology to provide virtual production workflows that can greatly expand what is possible on set. Being able to shoot final VFX imagery at the same time as principal photography adds another level of creative control for producers and filmmakers.”
Weta Digital is a multiple Sci-Tech Oscar-winning innovator which has pioneered virtual production techniques on projects such as James Cameron’s Avatar. (Photo: Weta Digital)
The new workflow features large, easily configurable LED panels that are able to display imagery well beyond 8K as a way to augment practical sets and often replace greenscreen shots for backgrounds and exteriors. It also lends itself to easily combining footage from multiple stages, making it ideal for keeping crew sizes smaller.
“We’re all focused on providing the safest work environment possible as productions look to ramp back up,” said Gary Watkins, CEO, Avalon Studios. “This new setup allows producers to think very strategically about what they shoot and limit the number of actors and onset crew required – changing postproduction requirements. Avalon has four main stages of varying sizes and dedicated spaces to house additional departments, making it a perfect hub for local and international productions.”
Streamliner General Manager Richard Manu added, “Our crew combines decades of live event experience with an in-depth knowledge of high-end video systems and we’re well adept working on high profile, time critical projects. Although we were early adopters in LED screen technology, having that alone just isn’t enough. We have the established infrastructure to make this a plug and play pipeline rather than a science experiment. Our investment in several LED screen types; large format laser projection and world leading media server platforms will give productions confidence we have it all covered.”
The LED stage service is highly flexible and is built to scale for any size project. The services are applicable as qualified spend for International and local screen funding schemes.
SIGGRAPH 2020 announces the award winners and lineup of 28 short films, cinematics, scientific visualizations, breakdowns and more set to appear in its first-ever virtual Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater next month. Showcasing the latest in computer graphics, the Electronic Theater will premiere to ticket holders on Monday, 24 August at 4:30 p.m. PDT and be available to unlock through Friday, 28 August at 8:59 p.m. PDT.
“Though we won’t be able to gather in one room this summer, the Electronic Theater is about honoring amazing stories from the past year, and I am thrilled to be able to share it virtually for the first time ever,” said SIGGRAPH 2020 Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater Director Munkhtsetseg Nandigjav. “The diversity of content is something I am really excited about for this year’s show — not only do we have three world premieres, but we also have an incredible variety of cinematics, visual effects, student and experimental shorts, visual effects breakdowns, and more visualizations than we’ve seen at SIGGRAPH in a long time. I am also incredibly honored to offer an exclusive, virtual Director’s Panel to Ultimate participants that will feature two female directors.”
A qualifying festival for the Academy Awards, the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival exhibits the ways various industries are pushing the boundaries of computer-generated storytelling in film, games, advertising, visual effects, science, television and more. For its virtual showcase, the expectations remain the same as the show presents an experience that is sure to inspire creators to “think beyond” what’s possible when it comes to story in the year ahead. Selected by an expert jury from close to 400 submissions, featured works hail from Japan, Australia, Germany, Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden and the United States.
“Participating in the jury this year was inspiring! The talent on display was incredible, and I was floored by both the quality and diversity in approach to story that we saw — especially from students. Honestly, if we had it our way, the show would be closer to three hours instead of two,” noted SIGGRAPH 2020 Computer Animation Festival Juror Sidney Clifton, of Deluxe Animation Studios.
From a pool of eight student and 20 professional studio productions, including world premiere short films from Pixar Animation Studios, Unity Technologies and Onesal Studios, the 2020 award winners are:
Best in Show: Loop | Pixar Animation Studios | Erica Milsom (United States)
Virtual tickets to access the Electronic Theater can be added to any registration level. The Electronic Theater Director’s Panel will be open only to Ultimate pass holders.

Skydance and Paramount Pictures announced Monday that original animated musical fantasy Spellbound, which Paramount Pictures has committed to co-finance and release globally, is now slated for November 11, 2022. Today’s announcement marks the continued expansion of the decade-long partnership between the storied Hollywood studio and David Ellison’s prolific media company, which now encompasses feature film, animation and television.
Skydance Animation’s first original feature film, Luck, will be released domestically on February 18, 2022 with a worldwide rollout to follow.
“Luck and Spellbound create rich worlds and compelling characters that we know will resonate with audiences everywhere,” said Holly Edwards, President of Skydance Animation. “It’s incredibly exciting to see our team of legendary creatives working around the clock and across the globe to bring these pictures to life.”
Spellbound, set in a world of magic where a young girl must break the spell that has split her kingdom in two, reunites director Vicky Jenson (Shrek, winner of the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and Academy Award-nominated Shark Tale) with her Shrek producer David Lipman, who has recently joined the project.
Vicky Jenson and David Lipman
Spellbound is written by Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin (Mulan) and Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King), whose work has earned her an Olivier Award, a Tony Nomination and the designation of Writers Guild of America West’s Animation Writers Caucus lifetime achievement honoree.
Legendary composer and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas) is writing the original score and songs. Menken has won more competitive Academy Awards than any living person and is also the recipient of numerous other awards including Golden Globes, Grammys, Drama Desk Awards and a Tony.
Grammy Award-winner Glenn Slater (Tangled) has been tapped to pen the lyrics. In addition to his Grammy, Slater has also been nominated for three Tony Awards, two Emmys, an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Grammy Award-winner Chris Montan (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Frozen) serves as executive music producer.
Luck, directed by Peggy Holmes (Secret of the Wings, The Pirate Fairy), features the unluckiest girl alive who stumbles upon the never-before-seen world of good and bad luck and must join with magical creatures to uncover a force more powerful than even luck itself.
Skydance Animation features full production capabilities across two continents, with more than 350 creatives based in Los Angeles and Madrid. In addition to its roster of feature films, Skydance Animation has a slate of soon-to-be-announced high-end television series in various stages of development.
Italian comic-book artist Mirka Andolfo (creator of Unnatural and Mercy, published by Image Comics in the U.S.) announced on Facebook Monday that her spicy original character — a flirty devil named Paprika — is on her way to heating up screens in a new adult animated original now in development, Sweet Paprika.
“I’m extremely excited to finally be able to announce animation on #SweetPaprikaDevil (which we’ve been working on for months with the Grey Ladder and Arancia Studio guys)!” Andolfo posted. “Development is long, so it will still be a long time before we have something to show. But we liked to share this good news about Paprika, a character I’ve been working on — silently — for a long time, on multiple fronts. No, it’s not just the sketches you see online. There will be more surprises!”
Adolfo’s announcement revealed that the project is being executive produced by 20-year industry veteran Gabriele Pennacchioli (Shrek the Third, Kung Fu Panda, Dragon Trainer), a 2019 Emmy Award winner for acclaimed adult animation anthology Love, Death + Robots. Adolfo is writing with the help of Tommaso Triolo of Italian comedy troupe The JackaL.

According to Andolfo’s website, Sweet Paprika is a sexy comedy described as Bridget Jones’ Diary meets Sex & The City with a little bit of The Devil Wears Prada thrown in — an urban fairytale about sexual liberation.
In a world similar to ours — but inhabited by angels and evils — we meet Paprika, a New Yorker of Italian origins, a workaholic who lives in a large metropolis instead of an enchanted castle. As with all princesses (even when they are little devils), danger is lurking: Paprika’s successful career has sucked her in, leaving no room for her loved ones or her own needs. Arriving to save her is not Prince Charming orMr. Big, but Dill — a naive, pleasant man whose “angelic” behavior could not be further from Paprika. Sweet Paprika follows these diametric opposites as they rise to various comical situations, while exploring important women’s issues — and never dropping the erotic thread that runs through Andolfo’s work.
I am very happy and very grateful,” Andolfo commented on her website. “The production team, starting from the key people, Alessandro Regaldo and Davide G.G. Caci, accompanied me on a journey that still seems like a dream to me today. I am very attached to comics, but the idea of starting a new adventure in another sector is electrifying … And doing it with professionals the caliber of Gabriele and Tommaso is more than I could ever hope for!”
“I confess that I didn’t know Mirka’s work well, but when I was contacted with the proposal to work on Sweet Paprika it was love at first sight,” added Pennacchioli. “A stimulating and fun project, with a graphic flash that is well suited for animation. A large and multifaceted world, fun and intriguing. A taste of Italian creativity, and global at the same time.”
Optioned by Grey Ladder Productions, a young Turin-based multimedia prodco with a focus on developing Italian projects for the international market, the animated series is being developed in association with Arancia Studio, a 10-year-old creative studio/agency specializing in visual communication, IP development and publishing which has grown out of a comic-book core.
At 30 years old, Neapolitan artist and writer Mirka Andolfo has already worked for many of the largest European and American publishers. She was the first Italian creator to write and draw a story for DC Comics (for which she had already worked on titles including Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn and Teen Titans). A recent article in Bleeding Cool described Andolfo as “the new Todd McFarlane” — creator of Spawn.

This summer, a cheerful eight-year-old boy named Tiggy and his gadget-building cat Gweeseek begin their animated adventures on HBO Max. Their show, which is called Tig n’ Seek, is the first series created by Myke Chilian, who was a storyboard artist and writer on Uncle Grandpa and designer on Rick and Morty.
During a recent interview, Chilian tells Animation Magazine that his fun new show has had a wide range of inspirations. “It ranges from the cartoons and films that have influenced me, to my experience growing up in an Armenian household, to my relationships with friends,” he explains. “As a kid, I was always attracted to the idea of running a business with a bunch of wacky employees. A fun place where people clock in and have a job to do, like organize toys or catch bugs in the backyard.”
Myke Chilian
The 39-year-old series creator says he was very much influenced by movies like Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice, where catching ghosts or living in the afterlife were bureaucratized and had rulebooks. “But the premise for the show was originally based on the relationship between me and my old cat, Gweeseek,” he notes. “I’d squeeze her and sing cutesy songs while she’d stare at me with a blank face.”
Tropes with a Twist
The show’s characters all work at the Department of Lost and Found. “We wanted to treat Tiggy’s co-workers like his pseudo-family,” says Chilian. “They’re inspired by the easily identifiable tropes I always saw in sitcoms growing up — the dumb dad, the angry sister, the desperate neighbor. Having characters that are defined by single emotions is great for an ensemble cast like ours and makes for rich situational comedy.”
The development process for the show began around 2015, as part of Cartoon Network’s pilot/shorts program, but Chilian says the pilot (which was called Tiggle Winks) was very different from what the show evolved into. “The series was greenlit around 2018 and we’ve been working on it ever since,” he says. “I have a crew of about 30-plus people ranging from storyboard artists, designers and production staff. That’s not counting the overseas animation studio, Rough Draft in Seoul, Korea, which has dozens more animating the show. I got the chance to visit Rough Draft last year and it was amazing. Their animation studio is top notch. Some of the best shows in the industry have come out of there, like The Simpsons, SpongeBob, Futurama — so it is an honor to be working with them on my first show.”
“The cool thing about Rough Draft is they still animate traditionally on paper,” notes Chilian. “There aren’t many places left in the world who still have mastery of this craft, so it was very cool to see them at work in person. Plus it was my first time in South Korea, so it was a very special trip!”
Chilian’s original short, Tiggle Winks
When asked about his favorite aspects of creating the show, Chilian says he loves the cast and crew. “I work with such amazing, talented and kind people,” he says. “Tig n’ Seek has actually changed a lot since the pilot episode and I think it has really developed into something of high quality. I owe this to the amazing team I have around me. They work hard and have a specifically vetted taste I can trust. It’s very hard to be a first time showrunner because you constantly have to make the right decision for something you’ve never done before. So having people around me with such refined tastes makes me feel confident we are on the track.”
Another source of pride is the show’s background art. Chilian says the background theory has really worked out for the project. “We push perspective a lot and render everything very painterly,” says the show creator. “It has really added the type of artistry you’d see in classic animation.”
Tig n’ Seek
Of course, like everyone else around the world, Chilian had to deal with the new COVID-19 stay-at-home era these past few months. “We’re lucky because we are still able to work on the show, but working from home is difficult for some of us,” he admits. “Everything is very locked down, so you have to sign in with special servers and use five different passwords to access files. It’s a whole thing. Plus, our voice actors can’t get to recording booths. It looks like they will be allowing us to go in soon to record, but it will be much different than a normal recording session. They’ll only have one or two people in the studio at a time and will have to completely disinfect the booth in between actors.”
Creative Outlets
Chilian says he has been drawing from an early age, and he wanted to pursue animation since he was in high school. “That doesn’t mean I always knew it would work out,” he adds. “I went to community college for music composition, and I’ve been in bands my whole life alongside animation. But cartooning always came natural for me whether I knew it was going to be a career choice or not.”
He includes animation legends such as Tex Avery, Bill Plympton, Richard Williams, Terry Gilliam, Mike Judge and Matt Groening as some of his heroes, and he mentions Columbo, The Simpsons, Mr. Show and The Young Ones as a few of his favorite shows. In the cinematic realm, he prefers folks like Federico Fellini and Spike Lee because their movies are stylized and push conventions.
Tig n’ Seek
Among his helpful tidbits of advice for thriving in animation: “Expand your tastes and don’t just watch what everyone else watches,” says Chilian. “I’m regularly looking through storyboard tests for new hires and I see people who are influenced by a lot of the same things — anime, D&D, dragon shows, video games, etc. And although I too like all those things, I’d rather work with people with more unique tastes. It could be avant garde music, outsider art, classical authors, foreign films — anything on the fringes of mainstream. Expanding your influences is what will help you stand out from everyone else.”
He adds, “And practice! It’s not enough to just have drive. I think people don’t realize how much they need to practice to be a great anything. Animation is a lot of hard work. You have to assess, ‘How bad do I really want this?’ and put in the amount of work that matches your drive.”
For now, the talented animation creator is excited for family audiences to discover the charming world he and his team have brought to life. “I really hope people see themselves in this show and it makes them laugh,” he admits. “Like, genuinely laugh. These characters are so flawed that it makes them relatable. You can’t help but crack up at all the mistakes they make!”

Burnaby-based Arcana continues work on its most ambitious animated feature to date during a challenging year.
An American teenager gets magically transported in time to the mysterious Chinese city of Sanxingdui and experiences a fantastic adventure in Heroes of the Golden Masks, an epic new animated movie in the works from the team at British Columbian studio Arcana.
“The original screenwriters, Jim Kammerud and Brian Smith, wrote this incredible story, and I knew it was a project I had to get behind,” says Sean Patrick O’Reilly, the studio’s CEO and founder and the movie’s director and producer. “Heroes of the Golden Masks is inspired by the ancient bronze masks of Sanxingdui discovered on the archaeological site of Guanghan in the Sichuan Province. Gordon McGhie and Troy Taylor of CG Bros Entertainment Inc., a studio deeply involved in building relationships and genuine partnerships in China, are my producing partners. We’re so fortunate to announce that Christopher Plummer and Ron Perlman have also joined the cast.”
O’Reilly says working on Heroes of the Golden Masks, which is the studio’s ninth movie, has been a dream come true. “I believe it will be the best movie Arcana has ever produced,” he says. “I do love the cast and I’m excited to be directing Christopher Plummer once again. I’m also really excited to show off the talents of our amazing new team of animators and crew. Even though we’re creating this project during COVID, we’re still producing a film with 65 full-time people working from home. We’ve upgraded our pipeline, reconfigured Shotgun and had to create a robust VPN, and we have managed to make everything work. It hasn’t been easy or cheap, but we’ve found a way to keep production moving forward.”
Educational and Eco-Friendly Toons
In addition, Arcana is continuing production on its popular CG-animated series Go Fish, which is based on the feature of the same name. “Like the film, the series is eco-friendly and educational,” notes O’Reilly. “It’s funny, daring, smart and truly is a cartoon the whole family can sit down and watch together, as each episode finds the characters on adventures and finding new issues to face in the reef.”
Go Fish
O’Reilly believes the studio has been able to manage so many projects because of the hard work and talents of his amazing team. “The projects are highly collaborative and every person at the studio really helps bring the projects to life,” says the CEO. “Working from home since early March, there are definitely days where I feel like I have only one hand on the wheel. Our team has been phenomenal, adapting strategies and workflow, accommodating these unprecedented times. It has also been great spending so much time with my wife and business partner, Michelle. She has been a rock!”
When asked to describe a typical production at Arcana, O’Reilly says, “Each of our projects are developed slightly differently, but often we start with a successful graphic novel from the Arcana library. I write the screenplay and at the same time Gary Yuen starts character modeling. We then continue to develop the project creating the full-length animatic while at the same time pull a scene from the movie, taking it right through to final comped image to use as our proof of concept.”
“We have some amazing, talented people we’ve picked up from Rainmaker, DreamWorks and Disney, and we have never had this much lead time before delivery,” he notes. “I jokingly call us a ‘farm to fork’ company, as we have produced all of our content in house, not only from the creative but also the production, financing and even our licensing and sales which is led by Jerina Hajno.”
Sean Patrick O’Reilly
O’Reilly, who founded the studio in 2004, says developing, producing, financing and licensing Arcana’s own content allows him and his team a lot more creative freedom than other bigger studios. “We don’t have a client, so we don’t need approvals from anyone outside,” he notes. “We decide which projects we want to see created with full creative control. Beyond creative control, we also have full control over rights and sales, which was extremely challenging at the beginning. Now we have people coming to us for co-productions, looking for help with their financing, and we have even invested in five productions as a senior debt lender.”
A big fan of animated shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rick and Morty and X-Men: The Animated Series and movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Incredibles, O’Reilly says he loves the limitless possibilities of the medium. “Animation allows the creator to illustrate subjects or actions in a way that live action isn’t able to,” he says. “I also love the lifestyle animation allows. Since it’s produced at a slower rate than live action, I’m not as stressed, and I love working with my family and friends!”
