Daisy Ridley, Stephen Fry Cast in Da Vinci Pic ‘The Inventor’

Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the recent Skywalker Saga Star Wars films, and erudite British icon of stage, screen and scribery Stephen Fry have signed on to voice roles in The Inventor — a mixed media animated feature about Leonardo da Vinci, written/directed/produced by Disney/Pixar vetaran Jim Capobianco. Ridley will voice the French princess, Marguerite, and Fry will play the ultimate Renaissance Man himself.

The Inventor was one of the buzzworthy animated feature projects presented at Cartoon Movie this spring, and is set to take part in next week’s Cannes film market.

Synopsis: In 1516, rather than paint “pretty” pictures for the Pope, the insatiably curious Leonardo da Vinci is instead searching for the meaning of life itself. This deadly heresy forces Leo to flee Italy with his apprentices and arrive at the court of Francis I, where he proposes to create the “Ideal City”. A city designed to benefit people not control them. However, Leonardo finds his new radical ideas do not please the King’s Mother nor do his endeavors serve the king’s ambitions for power. It is only in the enterprising princess, Marguerite, that Leonardo sees hope for the future. It is with her help that he finds the answer to the ultimate question: “What is the meaning of it all?”

Capobianco’s credits include The Lion King, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Inside Out, Finding Dory and Mary Poppins Returns. He received an Oscar nomination for writing Ratatouille. Also lending their creative flair to the project are Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea), who is handling hand-drawn animated sequences; director of photography Peter Sorg (Frankenweenie, Coraline); and composer Alex Mandel (Brave).

Robert Rippberger is producing the movie alongside Capobianco. Executive producers include Oscar-winning Disney veteran Don Hahn, Ilan Urroz, Kat Alioshin, Stephan Roelants, Carmella Casinelli, Dave Lugo, Wes Hull and Eleanor Colema. French Studio Folioscope (The Tower) is producing with Leo & King (U.S.).

Sales are being handled by mk2 (international) and The Exchange (U.S.)

  • Nick Weidenfeld, Tomorrow Studios Launch Animation JV Work Friends

Nick Weidenfeld, Tomorrow Studios Launch Animation JV Work Friends

Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios, has finalized a joint venture with Emmy Award-winning animation television veteran Nick Weidenfeld to launch Work Friends, the first primetime TV animation label in ITV Studios’ current U.S. scripted television studio operation.

This news follows the announcement yesterday by HBO Max for a series order of 10-Year-Old Tom, written and executive produced by critically acclaimed creator, producer and writer Steve Dildarian (The Life and Times of Tim) and executive produced by Weidenfeld and Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein (Hanna, upcoming live-action Cowboy Bebop series) and Becky Clements (Snowpiercer, Physical).

“Launching an animation company is a natural progression following our success in global sales of Japanese anime,” Adelstein explained. “I see TV animation as a unique opportunity to grow Tomorrow Studios’ business exponentially worldwide, especially under Nick’s leadership, one of the most respected executives and producers of primetime animation on television, with an eye for series that resonate globally. We’re excited to launch with the series order of 10-Year-Old Tom and a great development slate to take to market immediately.”

“This is a particularly exciting time to be making cartoons. And I couldn’t think of better partners to be doing it with — between the creative support of Marty, Becky and everyone at Tomorrow Studios; the robust studio business operation with Philippe Maigret and his team at ITV Studios America; and the international support from the ITV Studios team,” said Weidenfeld, “And I am ecstatic to get to launch Work Friends with a series order for 10-Year-Old Tom with Steve producing and writing the series.”

Maigret added, “We are thrilled to come on board Marty’s partnership with Nick to build a new primetime TV animation company. Marty and Becky’s established success at Tomorrow Studios, together with Nick’s proven track record and wealth of experience across all facets of animation, give the new venture a great deal of creative and commercial potential. The launch of Work Friends marks another step forward in driving the growth of Tomorrow Studios and expanding ITV Studios’ U.S. scripted television studio operations and creative footprint.”

Emmy Award-winning producer and executive Nick Weidenfeld is one of the most well-respected and successful producers of primetime TV animation, with over 15 years of experience and a strong track record with oversight, development and as producer of hit series including the Peabody Award-winning animated series The Boondocks, Robot Chicken and Rick and Morty during his tenure as Head of Development for Adult Swim, as well as the adult comedy Childrens Hospital.

In 2012, he was tapped by (then FOX President) Kevin Reilly to create ADHD Studios, where he developed and produced over 10 animated series for both FOX and FX. Most recently, he served as the President of Programming for Viceland, the youth-oriented television network co-owned by Vice Media and A&E Networks. Weidenfeld resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

The deal was negotiated by Jared Levine at Morris York Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner & Gellman and Greg Cavic at UTA for Work Friends; and Tom Lane, Executive Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs at ITV Studios America and Lindsay Conner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips for Tomorrow Studios. ITV Studios will distribute content resulting from the joint venture internationally.

HBO Max Debuts Trailer for ‘Close Enough’ from JG Quintel

Close Enough, the new adult-targeted sitcom with a surreal twist from Regular Show creator JG Quintel, finally drops on HBO Max on Thursday, July 9. Ahead of the debut, the streamer has unveiled the official trailer — which promises all the awkward “oof” laughs you’d expect from a sendup of young family life, with a spicy soupçon of sex, domestic chaos, and the occasional stripper clown.

Read more about the show in Ramin Zahed’s interview with Quintel from the June-July issue of Animation Magazine here!

Synopsis: From JG Quintel, creator of the Emmy Award-winning Regular Show comes Close Enough, a surreal animated comedy about a married couple, their five-year-old daughter, and their two divorced best friends/roommates all living together on the east side of Los Angeles. They’re navigating that transitional time in your 30s when life is about growing up, but not growing old. It’s about juggling work, kids, and pursuing your dreams, while avoiding time-traveling snails, stripper clowns and murderous mannequins. Their life may not be ideal but for now, it’s close enough.

Close Enough is created by Quintel and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

  • Annecy Work in Progress: ‘Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds’

Annecy Work in Progress: ‘Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds’

Among the many movies that are grabbing the spotlight at the Annecy Online festival this week is director Benoît Chieux’s (Aunt Hilda!) upcoming 2D feature Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds. The colorful, imaginative feature is penned by Oscar-nominated Alain Gagnol (A Cat in Paris, Phantom Boy) and produced by Ron Dyens of Sacrebleu Productions. During a Work in Progress presentation, the filmmakers introduced their movie and main characters, and shared images and a trailer (which you can watch at the end of this article) for their much-anticipated family feature.

Sirocco’s story centers on the adventures of two sisters, Juliette and Carmen, who discover a passage to the universe of their favorite book, The Kingdom of the Winds. “The first step for me was to draw the pictures which I was inspired by and wanted to animate,” says Chieux. “The flying crocodiles, organic houses and weird clouds — a colorful world which had few characters with human forms. Then our screenwriter Alain Gagnol wrote the movie inspired by those images. The story is basically based on two female duos: Two young sisters, Juliette and Carmen, who meet two older sisters, Agnes and Selma. The personality of one duo is reflected in the other one, just like a mirror game with facets.”

Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds

According to the director, the film has a very surreal and colorful visual style. Animation fans can definitely see the influence of Hayao Miyazaki and other anime favorites in both the subject matter and the loose, curvy designs. “The graphic style conveys a colorful and positive imaginary world,” says Chieux. “The wind was a big inspiration from the very beginning. I always thought it would be a perfect subject for animation: The wind is movement: It slams the door, caresses our skin and triggers storms. It is this fluid force with all these different aspects that we have to animate and bring to life. The wind is invisible, which presents one of the great cinematic challenges: How do we portray what we can’t see? I was very interested in that question. The wind is also the kiss of life; what allows Selma to sing and Agnes to write stories. The wind allowed us to create very original and dramatic conflicts and situations between the real world of Carmen and Juliette and the imaginary one of Agnes and Selma.”

Producer Ron Dyens (Marona’s Fantastic Tale, Friend of a Friend) mentioned that the score is being written by Pablo Pico (Marona’s Fantastic Tale). The 75-minute film, which has a budget of about 6 million euros ($6.8 million), will begin production next year and is slated for a 2022 release date. The producer mentioned that the film will be a perfect combination of a mainstream movie and an arthouse title. A tie-in book project and a possible TV series are also part of the plans for this charming title.

  • Trailer: ‘Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons’ Strikes Home Vid in August

Trailer: ‘Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons’ Strikes Home Vid in August

Go behind the mask and into the deep backstory of one of DC’s most revered anti-heroes in Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons, a new entry in the popular series of DC Animated Movies. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Blue Ribbon Content and DC, the feature-length animated film will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Digital starting August 4, and on Blu-ray Combo Pack (SRP $24.98 US / $29.98 CAN) on August 18.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons offers a new take on the Deathstroke legacy. Mercenary and master assassin Slade Wilson leads two lives: one as the relentless killer known as Deathstroke, and the other as a dedicated family man. When these worlds collide, forced together by the vicious terror group known as H.I.V.E., it is the killer in Slade who must fight to save his loved ones, as well as what remains of himself. With his soul torn apart and his young son held captive, Deathstroke will have to atone for the sins of his past to fuel the battles of his future!

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Michael Chiklis (The Shield, The Commish, American Horror Story: Freak Show) headlines the cast as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, alongside Sasha Alexander (Rizzoli & Isles, Shameless, NCIS) as Wilson’s wife, Adeline “Addie” Kane Wilson. The cast also includes Chris Jai Alex (ThunderCats Roar, Extraction) as The Jackal, Faye Mata (League of Legends) as Jade/H.I.V.E Queen, Griffin Puatu (Beastars) as Joseph/Jericho, Imari Williams (Transformers: Rescue Bots, LEGO DC: Shazam! Magic and Monsters) as President Nichols, Asher Bishop (The Angry Birds Movie 2) as Young Joseph, Colin Salmon (Krypton, Arrow, Die Another Day) as William Wintergreen, Delbert Hunt (Bad Henry) as Bronze Tiger, Panta Mosleh (Always Be My Maybe, Pass The Salt) as Lady Shiva, with Noshir Dalal (Red Dead Redemption II) as Kapoor, Castulo Guerra (The Usual Suspects, Jane The Virgin) as General Suarez, and Minae Noji (General Hospital) as Secretary of State.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons has been produced in a dual format – initially as animated shorts, the first five of which appeared on CW Seed. With a runtime of 87 minutes, the feature-length version has nearly 50 minutes of never-before-seen content, including the film’s thrilling climax. The film is rated R for bloody violence/gore, language, disturbing images and some sexual content.

Sung Jin Ahn (Niko and the Sword of Light) directs the film from a script by J.M. DeMatteis (Superman: Red Son, Batman: Bad Blood). Sam Register, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter serve as executive producers.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons gives DC Animated Movies’ their first true look into the complicated backstory of one of DC’s most controversial characters – Deathstroke is sometimes villain, sometimes anti-hero, and always deadly,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President, Originals, Animation and Family Marketing. “Michael Chiklis does an incredible job capturing the ruthless approach and conflicted internal struggles of Deathstroke.”

The Blu-ray and Digital releases also include the new featurette, Deathstroke: One-Man Death Machine. Some think he’s a villain. To others, he’s an unsung hero of secret wars fought all over the world. One thing’s for certain: When you see the orange-and-black mask, Deathstroke is coming!

  • Goon Cartoons Kicks Off ‘June of Goon’: 30 Toons in 30 Days

Goon Cartoons Kicks Off ‘June of Goon’: 30 Toons in 30 Days

Goon Cartoons, an original comedy animation channel on YouTube founded in 2012, announced the launch of their website and redesign of their YouTube presence, as well revving up “The June of Goon,” a new original animated cartoon for every day for the month of June 2020.

All-new animated shorts will include Buck Billy, Cosmic Kandi’s Like Total EDM Vlog, Pissed off Possum, The Cletus and Floyd Show, The Ultra Mega Super Squad, Garry Goth, The Devil and The Moonshine Shanty, as well as Cuphead and various pop culture parodies.

New Goon Cartoons will be released every day in June at 9 a.m. (PDT). Viewers can also expect behind-the-scenes videos, storyboard animatics and animation pencil tests to give the fans a look at how cartoons are made. Also, the Goon Cartoons’ artists will be posting behind the scenes drawings in the channel’s community tab along with model sheets and other “how to” instructions for making animated cartoons.

The brainchild of filmmaker, animator and comics creator Frank Forte (Solar Opposites, Bob’s Burgers, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia, Despicable Me 2), Goon Cartoons serves as an outlet for him and his fellow animation professionals to create their own original content.

“Nothing is off limits,” said Forte. “We want the Buck Billy shorts to be funny, timely, and off the wall. Some of them are scripted and some of them are Jesse just doing improv. We use Adobe Animate to animate, so this allows us to create the cartoons fast and YouTube allows us to reach the biggest audience and reach them quickly.”

“Working with Goon Cartoons has been wicked cool,” said writer/actor/voice actor Jesse Bernstein (Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods and Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes, CobraGator, S.W.A.T.) “Frank comes up with the characters and I come up with the voices to match. It’s been a great collaboration.”

Goon Cartoons’ cast and crew also includes writer/story artist/voice talent Tom Connor (Venture Bros., Bob’s Burgers, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Scoob!), writer/actor Bobby Gaylor (Phineas and Ferb, Johnny Test, Snoopy), animator Gene McGuckin (Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends), writer Elizabeth J. Musgrave (Soundman, Farmhouse, Darwin’s Pate), voice talent Mark Covell (Family Guy, Ted), actor/director Debi Bradshaw (Veep, Grace and Frankie, Hot Cake) and newcomer voice talents Eliah Prichard and Mellissa Dunkleberger.

“As an animation story artist, I’ve spent years working for various studios helping to bring their stories to life. It’s always been gratifying,” explained Connor, “This is different. It’s invigorating to be part of a team of like-minded cartoon geeks dedicated to writing and developing our own stories. It gets me out of bed in the morning!”

    The June of Goon cartoons:

Buck Billy, an agitated hillbilly who lives in a trailer park in the southern Midwest. Buck Billy’s character is that of an opinionated podcaster who can’t help but spout out about the goings on in the world. Buck Billy’s previous podcasts include rants on alcohol, Viagra, Cardi B, Corey Feldman, holiday parking, and more. Co-created by artist/director Frank Forte and actor/director Jesse Bernstein, Buck Billy is a short form comedic animated series that’s done in a rough cartoon style that matches its coarse and edgy content.

Pissed Off Possum, a small angry misinformed marsupial spouts off on daily news stories and things that bother him, which is pretty much everything.

Mr. Pigglesworth, a tribute to the classic cartoons like Looney Tunes and Ren and Stimpy. Mr. Pigglesworth is a pathetic little pig who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. This cartoon is expertly animated by Gene McGuckin.

Cosmic Kandi’s Like Total EDM Vlog, a 20-something millennial Raver girl podcasts from her bedroom and any EDM club she might be at. She’s trying to find herself in the midst of going clubbing, dating DJs, and trying to find a ride to Burning Man.

The Ultra Mega Super Squad, a reality show styled superhero documentary. This animated dysfunctional group of superheroes may be able to do some good for the Earth, if they could only stop talking behind each other’s backs.

The Devil. The Devil has a podcast. Yes, believe it or not, the reluctant Lucifer is tired of getting blamed for all the bad things that happen in the world and he’s here to set things straight.

ANIME! ANIME! Meet Jazen. The most enthusiastic fan of anime you’ll ever know! He somehow finds himself meeting up with all of his anime idols. He tries to have a conversation with them, but his fast talking, annoying, ADHD personality always gets in the way.

Garry Goth, a teenage goth kid, trying to get along in high school. Girls, parties, exams, these are all the things Garry is trying to deal with as he invites us into his world.

The Cletus and Floyd Show, is the tale of two hillbilly brothers. Cletus is a big brawny overbearing alpha male and his little brother Floyd is a nervous, jittery paranoid fool. The two of them get into all sorts of mischief. It is also inspired by classic cartoons of the 1950s.

Goon Cartoons is a rising force in the YouTube original content space. With over 157K followers, this channel is poised to introduce new comedic cartoon voices to the masses in the months and years to come.

  • Média-Participations AV Preps ‘Kid Lucky,’ ‘Living with Dad’ for M6 Kids

Média-Participations AV Preps ‘Kid Lucky,’ ‘Living with Dad’ for M6 Kids

With the Annecy International Animated Film Festival underway, Groupe M6 has just announced the arrival of Kid Lucky — a new children’s animated series inspired by the beloved Lucky Luke cowboy comics — produced by Dargaud Media for M6 Kids’ autumn schedule. Groupe M6 is also working with Dupuis Edition & Audiovisual on an animated sitcom adapted from the Living with Dad comic books.

Kid Lucky is directed by Olivier Brugnoli, and based on Lucky Luke by Morris and Goscinny, and Les Aventures de Kid Lucky by Achdé. The 52 x 11’ digital 2D series for children 6 and up tells the story of the childhood of “the greatest cowboy in the West!”

“It was a pleasure to get down to kids’ level with our partner M6 and explore Lucky Luke’s Wild West, while still developing a unique identity for the series,” said Caroline Duvochel, head of Média-Participation Audiovisual Production. “The pioneer outpost of Nothing Gulch gives Kid and his gang a unique backdrop for an adventurous childhood filled with freedom, discovery, fantasy and friendship. These are all ingredients which will attract today’s children, whether they already know the universe or not. But beware, there’s no room for lily-livered greenhorns!”

“It’s a great pleasure for us to work with Dargaud Media to broadcast the adventures of a young Lucky Luke in our children’s slot M6 Kids,” added Lila Hannou, Director of animation coproductions and pre-buys at Groupe M6. “A hero who has thrilled generations of readers in a new, positive, modern series with all the ingredients needed to take the whole family off into the Wild West… Wagons roll!”

Series director Brugnoli reflected, “The best way not to feel overwhelmed by the weight of the gigantic comic-book monument of Lucky Luke … is simply not to think about it! Even if we had a bit of fun slipping in a few nods – mainly for parents – in the direction of the universe of Lucky Luke, and westerns in general, our main aim has always been to speak to children of today. ‘The Kid’ is still far from being the ‘poor lonesome cowboy’ he’ll later become, meaning that there is a lot of freedom to invent a bucolic childhood world full of fun and frolics, with all his friends and his young foal, Jolly Jumper. Viewers will be shown a fresh and unique vision of our little hero.”

Kid Lucky is co-produced with Belvision (Belgium). Series writers are Romain Gadiou and Chloé Sastre. Mediatoon Distribution is handling international distribution.

Living with Dad, in development for Groupe M6 by Dupuis Edition & Audiovisuel, is a fast-paced, touching sitcom about contemporary blended family life, adapted from the comic books by NOB. The 52 x 11′ digital 2D series, aimed at kids 6+ and their families, is being produced by Arthur Colignon and Caroline Duvochel.

The Living with Dad series of six comics albums (the latest, Père à tout faire, came out in October 2019) and a special one-off have been published by Dupuis since 2014, and have sold more than 500,000 copies and been translated into six languages: Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Dutch, Croatian and Serbian.

While the comics show life from Dad’s point of view, the animated series will explore the perspectives of his four daughters. The sisters — ages two, eight, 12 and 18, and each as different as their respective mothers — share their lives with their actor dad, who is dedicated to caring for his darling daughters.

Mediatoon is handling international distribution for Living with Dad as well.

  • Weta Launches Animated Originals Division; Prem Akkaraju Named CEO

Weta Launches Animated Originals Division; Prem Akkaraju Named CEO

Weta Digital, one of the world’s premier visual effects companies, has named Prem Akkaraju as CEO and will begin producing original content for the first time in its 25 year history. Akkaraju’s appointment reflects the continued growth of the company, which will leverage the capabilities of its award-winning VFX business to produce original animation under the banner Weta Animated. The company will develop original animated content for both cinema and streaming platforms.

This has been a long-held dream of majority owners, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, who will write, produce and direct several animated projects for the company.

“We are huge fans of animated storytelling in all of its forms, but it can be a long, protracted, and often costly way to make movies. That’s, in part, why we have created this company – to change the model and open the doors to filmmakers and storytellers who might not otherwise be given the chance to show what they can do,” said Jackson.

Multi-Academy Award winners Jackson and Walsh will play a key role in the development of Weta Animated. The new production company will work alongside Weta’s world renowned visual effects business for the film and television industry.

Jackson continued, “We’re fortunate to have a strong, creative leadership team at Weta. Both Joe Letteri (Senior VFX Supervisor) and David Conley (Executive VFX Producer) have played a huge role in the success of the company. The years of experience that Joe and David bring to the table are invaluable. With the expansion of the company, adding someone of Prem’s caliber to this mix is essential. I’ve gotten to know Prem well over the past few years. I’m thrilled he’s agreed to lead the company through this exciting growth phase. Prem’s energy and passion for film is inspiring; we cannot wait to work with him.”

Weta Digital is known for revolutionizing the VFX production pipeline for some of the biggest films of all time, including Avatar, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Avengers: Endgame. Over the past 25 years, Weta Digital has developed over 100 proprietary tool sets and groundbreaking AI technology.

“Weta Digital began with one machine and just one artist who created the digital effects in Heavenly Creatures,” noted Walsh. “None of us knew what we were doing, but even in those early days we could see the incredible potential of this new technology. Since then, VFX has become a huge industry, but our goal has remained the same – to bring stories to life, through the power of imagination. If you can dream it, we can create it.”

This sentiment is shared by entrepreneur and visionary, Sean Parker, who invested in Weta Digital last year, and who has joined the board as Vice Chairman.

“I have been a Weta superfan for the past two decades — I recall my sense of wonder when I first saw the character of Gollum brought to life, and later the surreal feeling of being transported to the alternate reality of Pandora. The team at Weta never fails to inspire: their artistic imagination is unbounded, and their technical accomplishments have made that creative expression possible,” said Parker. “I have spent most of my career as an entrepreneur building and expanding companies, many of which sit at the intersection between content, technology, and commerce. This unique combination of artistry and technology is precisely what sets Weta apart from its peers.

“As an entrepreneur I look for industries that are undergoing seismic shifts — and Weta promises to be a disruptive force by catering to the tremendous unmet demand for high-quality animated content. Producing animated content has high barriers to entry, both technically and artistically, but Weta, with its leadership team, technology, and deep bench of creative employees, principals and collaborators is uniquely positioned to succeed. One of the great privileges of my professional life has been getting to know Peter and Fran, and every Weta team member whom I’ve had an opportunity to meet.”

“With Prem joining as CEO, I’m even more excited for what the future holds,” added Parker. “I have long admired Prem’s relentless energy, passion, and leadership capabilities. Prem has the ambition and drive to push Weta to even greater heights, and he brings global reach, strategic thinking, and clear-headed execution to a company whose roots lie in the fertile creative soil of New Zealand, but whose influence has always been global.”

Newly-appointed CEO Akkaraju commented, “When people speak about the magic of filmmaking, they are speaking about Weta. For over 25 years, Weta has led the VFX/animation industry by fostering an incredibly talented group of artists who work in tandem with a gifted team of computer scientists and engineers. I’m thrilled to be joining Peter, Fran and the extraordinary team at Weta as we enter into a hypergrowth stage with the launch of original content, bolstering our VFX service business and expanding our technology capability and infrastructure.”

“Now is a great time for us to be developing original animation, something I have long been excited about exploring,” said Senior VFX Supervisor Letteri. “Storytelling is an essential part of what we do in visual effects and being able to bring our creative experience to new stories in early development opens up a world of unique possibilities.”

Throughout the ongoing pandemic, Weta’s VFX and animation work has continued safely and uninterrupted. “The strength of our business is in the artists,” said Exec VFX Supervisor Conley. “And over the last few months they have shown that strength not with their creative skills, but with their ability to quickly adapt to new work environments. It puts a lot of pressure on how we manage the business, but its success to date is acknowledged across the industry and really reflects a collective commitment from our entire team.”

Prem Akkaraju co-founded SR Labs with Sean Parker, where he previously served as CEO and still serves as Executive Chairman. SR Labs is a technology company servicing the film industry. Using a unique combination of anti-piracy technologies, SR Labs hardware and software-based solutions streamline traditional distribution to theaters and consumers with an unprecedented level of quality and security, at a fraction of the price. Akkaraju is an inventor on 11 domestic and 25 global utility technology patents related to SR Labs’ groundbreaking architecture.

Prior to SR Labs, Akkaraju was the Chief Content Officer of SFX Entertainment, where oversaw live and recorded electronic music festivals and related content, which collectively received over 1 billion views online, and served as an Executive Producer of the Tomorrowland: 10 Year Anniversary documentary film and Tomorrowland: World Stage. Before joining SFX, Akkaraju was a Principal at JPMorgan Entertainment Partners, the largest entertainment focused Wall Street investment fund at the time. He started his career as a Financial Analyst at Salomon Brothers, Media and Entertainment Investment Banking Group. Akkaraju has an MBA from Columbia Business School and lives in Los Angeles.

Leading SA Animation Studio Triggerfish Starts Int’l Expansion in Galway

Triggerfish, the animation studio behind Netflix’s first Original animated TV series from Africa, today announced it is to establish its first international studio in Galway. The project, supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, is expected to create 60 new jobs over the next three years.

Triggerfish animated the Oscar-nominated Roald Dahl adaptation Revolting Rhymes as well as much-loved Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler adaptations, such as the 2020 International Emmy-winning Zog, the 2020 British Animation Awards winner The Snail and the Whale, the BAFTA-nominated and Annecy-winning Stick Man and the Rose d’Or-winning The Highway Rat, all produced by Magic Light Pictures.

Founded in 1996, Triggerfish was instrumental in the birth of the South African animation industry, co-founding the country’s official animation association, AnimationSA, as well as an ongoing monthly screening and networking event.

The studio’s first two features, Adventures in Zambezia and Khumba, are among the five highest-grossing South African feature films of all time, with nine million cinema tickets sold globally. This saw Triggerfish named overall Business of the Year in South Africa’s Western Cape province in 2015 — a first for an animation company.

“To keep up with demand, we started outsourcing work to Irish animators in 2019 and were quickly won over by both the quality of the work and the dedication to the craft,” says Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest. “In many ways, the Irish creatives seem very similar to what we always look for in South Africa: a passion for animation, a love of story and the deeply felt ambition to create award-winning and entertaining work.”

Triggerfish is currently producing Netflix’s first Original African animated TV series, Mama K’s Team 4, set in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia, where four scrappy teen girls join a retired secret agent on a quest to save the world — on a budget.

Triggerfish is also in production on their third feature film, Seal Team, an action-comedy about a brave, reckless seal who forms a rag-tag team to save his home from Great White Sharks.

In addition, Triggerfish services AAA-rated and mobile games for the likes of Electronic Arts, Unity and Disney Interactive and is in development on a broad slate of original film and television projects for most of the world’s biggest studios.

“We need more capacity to keep up with our ambitions, and Galway ticked all the boxes for our European base,” says studio producer Andy Wonnacott, who will head up the Galway branch, to the delight of his Irish wife. “It has a similar time zone to South Africa; is very well connected, with both flights and broadband connectivity; has a thriving creative community; and offers loads of really fantastic business support. For us personally, Ireland is our second home, so it will be good to be back with family and friends.”

More recently, Triggerfish has been helping to kickstart the broader African animation industry through initiatives like the pan-African Triggerfish Story Lab, supported by The Walt Disney Company; the all-women Triggerfish Writers Lab with Netflix; the free Triggerfish Academy digital learning platform, supported by Goethe-Institut, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and The Walt Disney Company; and regular bursaries to study animation.

“We’re big fans of the likes of Cartoon Saloon and Giant, so are looking forward to helping grow Ireland as an animation hub producing some of the world’s best work,” added Forrest. “To begin with, we’ll be continuing our work on various high-end game projects, and expect this to scale quickly in line with Triggerfish’s track record in Africa.”

“I am delighted to see that Triggerfish have chosen to establish their first international studio in Ireland,” said Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation. “Galway will be a natural fit for this creative company. They will join a burgeoning list of award-winning indigenous and foreign animation studios already based here, and will be a great addition to this thriving sector.”

IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan commented, “This is a great investment for Ireland and Galway is a great choice of location, given the availability of highly skilled creative talent there. The 60 new roles being created is a welcome boost to the economy of Galway and the West region. It is a huge vote of confidence in Ireland and demonstrates our continued strong value proposition and our agile and adaptable business environment at a time of unprecedented global flux due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I wish Triggerfish every success with its operations here.”

Animators keen on joining this new team for a promising adventure on a wonderful slate of new projects can apply via the Careers tab at triggerfish.com.

Trailer: ‘Jungle Beat: The Movie’ Gets Global Digital Launch June 26

Sandcastle Studios’ Jungle Beat: The Movie, made in collaboration with Sunrise Productions, will make its worldwide debut on digital platforms worldwide on June 26. In addition to Amazon, GooglePlay and AppleTV, the film will also be available on multiple platforms in 98 countries. To celebrate the launch, the filmmakers invite viewers to join them for Africa’s first-ever worldwide family movie night.

Ahead of its worldwide debut, the film is first making its official premiere as one of the 10 films in official competition as part of this year’s digital edition of the Annecy Int’l Animation Festival, Annecy Online, which kicked off earlier this week on June 15. Read more about the making of this ambitious next chapter for the wildlife pals here.

Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield has recorded a brand-new song for the Jungle Beat: The Movie, entitled “Together in This.” Written by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jonas Myrin, the song was not only inspired by the film’s themes of togetherness and friendship, but also the state of the world today, reminding us that although we may be apart, we’re never alone. “Together in This,” will be the featured single on the soundtrack as well as the official end title track for the film and will be available for download/streaming on June 26.

“’Together in This’ is such a timely song, and we’re so grateful to Jonas and Natasha who both did an incredible job writing and performing it,” said Sandcastle Studios Producer Rita Mbanga. “In this time in our world we so desperately need voices and messages of hope, and we really believe our film and the song will inspire unconditional love and acceptance in a world which needs an abundance of both.”

Jungle Beat: The Movie is a family friendly adventure of epic proportions written and directed by Brent Dawes. When a homesick alien crash-lands his spaceship near the colorful African jungle, his new animal friends need to find a way to get him back to his ship and teach him about friendship and fun before his Space-Conquerer father can take over the planet. The film is based on the global hit series, Jungle Beat, which has broadcast in over 196 countries and across a range of media platforms including TV, cinema and in-flight entertainment.

“We’re thrilled to be launching our first animated feature to a global audience,” said Sanet Kritzinger, Managing Director of Sandcastle Studios and Executive Producer of Jungle Beat: The Movie. “We’re extremely grateful to everyone who has supported us, including the Mauritius Economic Development Board and Island Film Services. We know families in Mauritius will enjoy our family movie night on June 26, and we look forward to continuing to produce world class content on the island.”

Co-founder of Sunrise Productions and Executive Producer Phil Cunningham added, “We are passionate about storytelling and particularly stories told through animation, as it has the unique ability to transcend race, cultural, age and gender barriers better than any other entertainment medium. This story carries a message of hope: that love, friendship and acceptance are the most powerful weapons!”

  • Annecy Offers an Insider’s Look at Netflix’s ‘The Cuphead Show’

Annecy Offers an Insider’s Look at Netflix’s ‘The Cuphead Show’

Classic animation fans have been quite excited since Netflix announced last July that it was working on a new show based on Studio MDHR’s acclaimed game Cuphead. The show, which will debut on Netflix, is getting a glorious Work in Progress treatment as part of the virtual Annecy Festival this week. Audiences are invited to join exec producers Dave Wasson, Cosmo Segurson, CJ Kettler and Chad and Jared Moldenhauer as they discuss various aspects of the show and share highlights, animatics, designs and fun facts about the highly anticipated project.

    The Cuphead Show
    The Cuphead Show

“I got into animation because I love shorts, but when I started to study animation in school, they told me, ‘Sorry, nobody is making shorts anymore,’” recalls Wasson, a veteran of Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse and Star vs. the Forces of Evil. “I am such a fan of 1930s rubber-hose style of animation, and when we saw the first images leaking from the videogame, everything looked so authentic and true to that era. I knew that this project was going to be really special. From there, it was kind of a talent contest to see who the showrunners were going to be, and so I had to pitch to Netflix, to CJ Kettler (King Features Syndicate) and [game creators] Chad and Jared, and each time I was told, ‘OK, you made it this far, now don’t blow it. They all have to love you!’”

Segurson (writer/director of Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, Pig Goat Banana Cricket) says he has also been a lifelong fan of classic ’30s animated shorts, especially Fleischer’s Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons. “I went through the interview process for the show and pitched some concept ideas,” he recalls. “I told them about all the 16 millimeter shorts which I’ve been collecting over the past 20 years, which primarily focus on the Fleischer Popeye projects. and I think that sealed them deal with them!”

According to the producers, the entire Cuphead Show takes place in a world called Inkwell Isles, which like the videogame comprises all these different lands. “Cuphead and Mugman often visit these different parts of the island to have their adventures,” says Segurson.

Wasson explains that although the creative team wanted to pay homage to the cartoons of the 1930s, they also wanted to tell stories that were really character driven. “Our show is a buddy comedy in its core,” says the exec producer. “Everything comes from these characters. Cuphead is a loveable scamp who is constantly craving fun and adventure, who also happens to have a cup for a head! The catalyst for the show is Cuphead and his brother Mugman’s desire for adventure and to find something more than just living in this cabin in the middle of the woods with Elder Kettle! The good thing about the pilot of the show is that it is designed to introduce the characters as we get a day in the life of Cuphead and Mugman.”

Cuphead character designs from the original game (Studio MDHR)
Cuphead character designs from the original game (Studio MDHR)

The producers praise the team at Lighthouse Studios for being able to deliver the right kind of visuals and animation and to recreate the hand-drawn feel of those classic toons digitally. “We were going for a 1930s-era watercolor background look for the show. We were thinking, ‘How in the world are we going to pull that off?,’ because everyone who was doing that kind of work has been dead for a long time,” says Wasson. “But we were so pleased to see how lush and rich the backgrounds ended up being.”

The producers also praise the work of the show’s gifted art director Andrea Fernandez (Unikitty, Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus) who says the show has been a real art director’s dream come true. “I know that I’m very, very lucky to work on a project like this. It’s so rare that the art and animation of the 1930s era is brought back to life like this,” she says. “Fortunately, we had so many people who were interested in working on the show, so we could really focus on those who had real watercolor experience. To recreate that art digitally, they would have to understand how watercolor works and moves. Ideally, I hope that audiences are going to sit back, think the show looks great and is hilarious, and it will bring back the wonder of childhood.”

Segurson concludes, “If I had to sum up the show in a (hyphenated) word, I’d say it’s a party-platter! So much of it is visceral and deeply entrenched in character, music and color.” Adds Wasson, “It’s like a big, juicy steak!”

The Annecy presentation also features interviews with some of the other crew members, as well as voice actors Tru Valentino (Cuphead), Frank Todaro (Mugman), Luke Millington-Drake (Devil), Grey Griffin (Chalice) and Joe Hanna (Elder Kettle). The Cuphead Show will premiere on Netflix later this year.

  • Imagine Kids+Family, Lion Forge Animation Ink Exclusive First-Look Pact

Imagine Kids+Family, Lion Forge Animation Ink Exclusive First-Look Pact

Imagine Kids+Family and David Steward II’s Lion Forge Animation studio (Academy Award-winning short Hair Love) have formed an exclusive first-look partnership around the animation company’s existing IP of both licensed and original ideas, starting with Chippy Hood, Puerto Rico Strong and Black Comic Anthology, among others. Content development will include short-form, TV series, and digital, and will be part of a strategic global franchise plan and consumer products.

Productions will be executive produced by Imagine Kids+Family President Stephanie Sperber and Lion Forge Animation President Carl Reed, and founder David Steward II.

Chippy Hood is an animated series, created in partnership with South Korean animation studio Mostapes, for preschool aged kids set in a magical place where four little chipmunks — Chippy, Kong, LaLa and BamBam — look for opportunities to add fun events into their daily lives.

Puerto Rico Strong is an animated anthology series based on the book that was created by the many people who came together out of empathy after the devastation the island faced from Hurricane Maria. Many within the Latinx community stepped forward to share their stories, both fictional and personal, that spoke of the culture, history, and strength of the Puerto Rican community. A fan favorite, and critically acclaimed, the book went on to be recognized with the highest honor in comics — the Eisner Award, for best Anthology. Puerto Rico Strong explores what it means to be Puerto Rican and the diversity that exists within that concept, from today’s most exciting Puerto Rican comics creators.

Black Comic Anthology (working title) is a series of animated episodes, featuring African-American creators, offering a journey through time and a look at the black experience at each stop. It will explore subject matters of race, inequality, triumphs, and tribulations and has a connecting fiber throughout that culminates in a surprise ending that ties its seemingly unrelated episodes together.

The projects will be jointly produced and financed by Lion Forge Animation and Imagine. The partners will collaborate on the development and pre-production of the projects, including the creation of story, character design and other assets. Animation work will be conducted at the Lion Forge Animation studios in St. Louis, Missouri.

“I have admired Carl and David for their originality and unique storytelling for years. They are visionary content creators and cross-platform franchise incubators,” said Sperber. “We are excited to partner with them to produce an original slate of content that also amplifies unique voices and tells diverse stories.”

Reed commented, “The Imagine brand has always stood out as a blue chip moniker for best-in-class entertainment and their Kids+Family group certainly carries on the tradition. We’re excited to work with Stephanie and the Imagine team as we explore and mine Lion Forge’s vast IP holdings that include comics, graphic novels, original content and celebrity affiliations, and as always, introduce diverse voices and characters to impressionable audiences who will see this as more relatable in today’s world.”

Added Steward II, “We’re seeing a surge in demand for animated content aimed at children and expect this trajectory to continue in step with the proliferation of screens and streaming platforms globally. To meet this demand and continue to deliver at the high-level families are accustomed to, we’re happy to forge this partnership with Imagine Kids+Family and collaborate on a really fun and distinct slate that carries our messages of diversity and inclusion.”

Imagine Kids+Family was launched in January 2019 by Imagine Entertainment, and is run by Sperber. The division is currently in production on its first live-action series The Astronauts (Nickelodeon) and recently announced a partnership James Patterson’s kids division JIMMY Books, and a partnership with LIFE to develop LIFE for Kids, an animated series using images from the preeminent picture magazine. Imagine Kids+Family also has an equity stake in The Tiny Chef Show to develop content, as well as a global consumer products program.

Launched less than a year ago, Lion Forge Animation was behind the 2019 Academy Award-winning, culturally resonating short, Hair Love, directed by Matthew A Cherry. The animation studio contributes to the growth of Lion Forge IP with TV series and feature film adaptations and is one of the only African-American owned animation studios in the world, but unmatched in size and scale (and the only African-American owned studio with an Oscar).

The studio sits within Steward II’s holding company Polarity, which houses media businesses including the Lion Forge comics publishing unit. Steward II has been putting resources behind his vision of expanding the market for comics and comic-related pop culture to new age groups and demographics since the early 2010s, building a portfolio of titles and imprints that feature characters and creators from a wide variety of backgrounds. He’s extended that vision and ethic to the larger media landscape with an organization that can orchestrate content development, production and distribution across different channels.

With Lion Forge Animation, Steward II is widening the diversity of creative voices available in the animated space. The company’s goal remains in line with what Steward II and his team accomplished in publishing — to showcase a variety of authentic voices and experiences through their work, whether created internally or through partnership with top talent.

  • HBO Max Greenlights Adult Toon ’10-Year-Old Tom’ from Steve Dildarian, Nick Weidenfeld

HBO Max Greenlights Adult Toon ’10-Year-Old Tom’ from Steve Dildarian, Nick Weidenfeld

HBO Max, the direct-to-consumer offering from WarnerMedia, announced a greenlight order for adult animated series 10-Year-Old-Tom. Critically acclaimed creator, producer and writer Steve Dildarian (The Life and Times of Tim) will write and executive produce the series and TV animation veteran Nick Weidenfeld (The Boondocks, Rick and Morty) will executive produce.

In the series, Tom grapples with being corrupted by the grownups around him each day just by leaving his house. Bad influences seem to lurk around every corner… litigious parents, drug-dealing bus drivers and band teachers who want to sleep with his mom. If he sets up a lemonade stand, he gets sued for gross negligence. If he plays baseball, he is encouraged to “dabble with roids.” And if he visits the school nurse, he is introduced to the world of insurance fraud. The grown ups in Tom’s life all mean well, but somehow just can’t manage to lead by example.

Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max and President of TNT, TBS & TruTV, and Suzanna Makkos, EVP Original Comedy & Animation, have had a collaborative history with both Dildarian and Weidenfeld. Reilly and Makkos had a development deal with Dildarian during their tenure at Fox and during that same time Reilly created the animation studio ADHD run by Weidenfeld.

“Steve is a singular comedic voice and also a brilliant visual artist. Combined with Nick’s animation acumen, they make for a winning team. We are thrilled to bring that unique combination to HBO Max as they explore the complications and hilarity of being a child in modern America,” said Makkos.

Dildarian commented, “I’m so excited to be making this show, and couldn’t ask for better partners than HBO Max, Nick Weidenfeld and Tomorrow Studios. I can’t wait to tell these stories through the eyes of Tom, an innocent kid trying to navigate a world that seems to get crazier by the day.”

“Not only is Steve insanely funny, he is one of the rare talents that can write, draw and do voices. He’s the triple threat that is the foundation of all great animated shows,” added Weidenfeld.

The series will also be executive produced by Marty Adelstein (Hanna, upcoming Cowboy Bebop live-action miniseries) and Becky Clements (Snowpiercer, Physical) of Tomorrow Studios (a partnership between Adelstein and ITV Studios). ITV Studios will handle international distribution of the series.

  • FOX Strikes Direct Animated Comedy Deal with Dan Harmon

FOX Entertainment and Emmy Award-winning creator Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) have entered a broadcast network-only exclusive direct animation deal, it was announced today by Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment, FOX Entertainment.

Marking FOX Entertainment’s first direct animation deal to receive a series commitment, as part of the agreement, Harmon will create and develop a comedy series targeted to premiere in the spring of 2022. FOX Entertainment will produce the series, with Bento Box Entertainment serving as the program’s animation studio.

“Before joining the network ranks, I was an independent producer who had the opportunity to work with Dan on one of my very first projects. His singular voice, tenor and conviction to always deliver the unexpected in the stories he tells, let me know right away that he was a special talent,” said Thorn. “As one of the most prolific creators working in the business today – and as FOX’s animation brand continues to grow and evolve, with the support and guidance of Charlie Collier – there’s no better creative partner to have than Dan Harmon.”

Harmon’s hit series, Rick and Morty, is currently airing Season Four on cable’s Adult Swim, as part of a 70-episode order. Season Three broke ratings records as 2017’s #1 comedy in key demos and earned the series an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. Harmon created and executive-produced the hit comedy series Community, which ran for six seasons, garnering multiple Emmy nominations, Critics Choice Awards and other accolades. In 2015, he executive-produced the Academy Award-nominated animated feature film Anomalisa.

Other creators who have recently signed direct deals with FOX Entertainment include Jeff Davis, Kyle Killen, Mara Brock Akil and Sarah Watson, who wrote and is executive-producing FOX’s Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project pilot from Warner Bros. Television, Amblin TV and FOX Entertainment.

Latest Blue Zoo Short ‘Ada’ Debuts Online

Ada, a distinctive, atmospheric monochrome short set in the arctic and the latest piece to join the ranks of #BZShorts, has made its free online premiere on Vimeo this week. BAFTA-winning animation studio Blue Zoo has been creating critically acclaimed short films to hone its storytelling craft for the past 20 years.

The #BZShorts initiative encourages the company’s wealth of talent to explore new and innovative ways to push creative boundaries and improve workflows — an inclusive program where anyone in the studio can pitch to direct, to nurture new talent and give opportunity to all.

    Blue Zoo
    Blue Zoo

Director Dane Winn rendered his new short Ada entirely in Unreal Engine, a program usually associated with the gaming industry which is capable of rendering material many times faster than with traditional technology. This gave the team freedom to create numerous iterations and for creative decision making to be executed and rendered almost entirely on the fly.

The film itself is a hard-hitting story about Ada Blackjack, an Alaskan seamstress stranded on an Arctic island and struggling for survival as she journeys back to her son, inspired by a true story. “It was essential to tell her story the right way and that it was handled sensitively. That was the foremost focus before we got into the software,” said Winn.

The Blue Zoo Shortform team came together to devise the film and tackle the new challenge and uncover the opportunities of real-time rendering in-house over the course of 14 months.

“Working with Unreal, I soon discovered how intuitive the program was. Real time offers an immediacy for the lighters that we hadn’t had before. Their role quickly evolved into cinematographers, juggling shading, lighting, comping and grading all at once,” Winn explained. “But ultimately, Ada’s story is a very human one, a mother needing to return to her son. What was important for me, was arriving at a single moment at the end of the film that had something to say, everything before it had to get us there.”

    Ada
    Ada

Though this accelerated pipeline was a thrilling prospect, the team were keen to let the story unravel slowly with focus on the titular character, Ada. “In a world of TikTok attention-span-sapping content, we pushed in the opposite direction to celebrate the art of storytelling and made a 10 minute short,” added Blue Zoo Co-Founder & Managing Director, Tom Box.

New business manager, Craig Purkis said about the project, “This exciting development into Unreal Engine and real time rendering means we can turn projects around far quicker than we were previously able to, opening up opportunities for Blue Zoo to produce reactive animated advertising.”

Since its completion, Ada has been screened at film festivals across the world including Manchester Animation Festival and London International Animation Festival.

You can watch Ada as well as other Blue Zoo shorts and commissioned projects on the studio’s Vimeo page. Learn more at www.blue-zoo.co.uk.

Synopsis: Stranded on an arctic island with a dying man in 1921, an Alaskan seamstress must overcome her fears of the wilderness and find the strength to survive if she ever hopes to return home to her son. Inspired by the true story of Ada Blackjack.

Synopsis: When you’re a bored teenager looking for thrills, sometimes the only thing you can turn to is rock ‘n roll. Having no skill, money, or even a full set of drums, a feared trio of high school delinquents nevertheless decide they are destined for musical glory in a quest to impress their only friend Aya, avoid a rival gang, and — most importantly — jam out.

Animated almost entirely by Iwaisawa, and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto, On-Gaku: Our Sound brings its own sound and vision to the Hiroyuki Ohashi manga from which it was adapted. With pitch-perfect deadpan humor, the film presents a highly original take on the beloved slacker comedy: a lo-fi buddy film with a blaring musical finale that will leave you wanting an immediate encore.

Rodney Uhler of GKIDS and Emico Kawai of Nikkatsu Corporation negotiated the deal for North American rights.

On-Gaku: Our Sound reminds us of our favorite indie comedies while remaining a wholly unique film,” said Uhler, GKIDS’ Director of Special Projects. “Kenji Iwaisawa’s remarkable hand-drawn work has created a film full of quotable lines, distinctive characters and infectious style. It remains one of the most fun viewing experiences we’ve had all year, and we can’t wait to share the film with audiences.”

Cyber Group Partners with France TV for New Comedy ’50/50 Heroes’

During the 2020 MIFA in Annecy, France, Cyber Group Studios announced that its brand-new animated series 50/50 Heroes — developed with pubcaster France Télévisions — is heading into production this June. Key European broadcaster partners are soon to be announced.

The 52×11’ 2D-HD comedy series, aimed at children 6 to 10 years old, follows the adventures of Mo and Sam, half-brother and sister, aged 11 and 9. One day they find out that they have inherited some powers from their great-great-great-grandma who had a fling with a superhero many moons ago. But, as half-siblings, they must share these powers down the middle. Upshot: these two “sorta superheroes” run half as fast, turn half-invisible! No latex suits for these heroes, and no missions to save the planet.

But having superpowers can be actually very cool when you are a kid. What about using it to get this ice cream or to go to the movie theater with your friends while you have to be somewhere else with your mom at the same time! All our half-brother & half-sister Mo and Sam will need to do to make these superpowers work is simply to be on the same page… But this will be quite a challenge!

50/50 Heroes is based on an original idea of Romain Gadiou and Chloé Sastre, co-writers of Cyber Group Studios’ Mirette Investigates and Tom Sawyer animated series. Graphic designs have been made by two key artists from renown “Collective Steak”: Yann de Preval for character designs and Anthony Vivien for the backgrounds, who have worked on series such as 101 Dalmatian Street and Muffin Jack. The series will be directed by the talented Cédric Fremeaux, who served as storyboard supervisor on the Chip ‘n’ Dale reboot.

The series will be primarily produced out of Cyber Group’s Paris and Roubaix studios — a point of pride for these champions of homegrown French animation. 50/50 Heroes will utilize 2D techniques as well as an in-house special effects technology developed by the company’s R&D department.

“I am particularly happy to work with France Télévisions on this new comedy series and to work together with such talented artists both in our Paris and Roubaix studio, dedicated to create new animation using groundbreaking technology for our upcoming productions in CG and 2D,” said Pierre Sissmann, President and CEO of Cyber Group Studios.

Tiphaine de Raguenel, Head of Young Publics and Animation France Télévisions, added, “A promise of a stunning comedy, 50/50 Heroes is the ambitious original creation that France Télévisions was waiting for on the theme of relations between half-brother and half-sister with a not at all serious tone. With Mo and Sam, this series invents a duo of a new genre half-superhero half-brother and sister. Two children faced with their own desires and their needs to find solutions together. At the end of each story, they will have learnt something about themselves, which will help them grow. 50/50 Heroes will undoubtedly be the next big success of Cyber Group Studios and we are happy to offer it exclusively to our audience on Okoo [digital kids’ platform].“
