Palm Springs Int’l ShortFest Official Selection: 50 Animated Projects Compete

Palm Springs International ShortFest has selected 332 short films in their Official Selection that will be eligible for jury award consideration — including 50 animated works. These films represent 69 countries and were selected from more than 6,000 submissions received this year. As previously announced, while ShortFest will not hold an in-person event, a number of the official selection films will be available to screen for free online from June 16-22.

A list of screening films and the complete line-up is available at www.psfilmfest.org.

“We’re proud to share all the work filmmakers have put into making their films and all of the work our staff has put into making ShortFest happen,” said Artistic Director Lili Rodriguez. “No one ever imagines launching a film festival during a pandemic, let alone launching one during such politically charged and urgent times. We remain firm believers that movies are empathy machines and stay committed to sharing cinema from different parts of the world, from different and diverse perspectives.”

“We are thrilled to be able to mount ShortFest virtually during these challenging times,” said ShortFest Directors of Programming Linton Melita and Sudeep Sharma. “Although it is a shame we cannot welcome audiences in person later this month, it is no small consolation to have the privilege to share the work of these incredible filmmakers in what we feel might be the best lineup the festival has ever had.”

ShortFest remains dedicated to providing a space to facilitate connections between creators, industry, and our amazing audience. The ShortFest Forum will also take place from June 16-22, with virtual classes and panels featuring industry guests. This year’s panels will cover a wide range of topics including animation, budgeting, commercials, co-productions, documentary filmmaking, entertainment law, episodics, festival programming, festival strategy, financing, music, pitching, writing, as well as working with actors, agents, managers, press and publicists. ShortFest filmmakers will have priority access to the ShortFest Forum. Four of the panels will be available for the general public.

Juried award winners will be announced on Sunday, June 21 from the official selection presenting them with awards and cash prizes worth $25,000 — including five Academy Award qualifying awards, among which is the Best Animated Short prize. Over the course of 24 years, the Festival has presented over 100 films that have gone on to receive Oscar nominations.

  • Ottawa Int’l Animation Fest Moves Online for 44th Editions

Ottawa Int’l Animation Fest Moves Online for 44th Editions

One of the world’s best known and loved animation events is moving its screenings and talks online for the 2020 event, and the organizers are embracing the challenge. The extended online festival is running from September 23 to October 4.

“At first we wanted to mimic the live event as much as possible, but then the team started to think of ways we could take the things people love about the OIAF and make it more suited to an at-home experience,” said Managing Director Kelly Neall. “It’s a chance to get creative and try some new things.”

The OIAF team is researching the best platform to securely showcase the films for an international audience while also incorporating a social component. There will be artist talks, workshops and the chance to virtually meet with schools and recruiters. InGenius Jr for families will return, as well as the NightOwl party. Activities are being extended past the event’s usual five-day run so people can work it into their schedule.

While having a limited number of in-theater events is not completely off the table, with social distancing and reduced international travel it would be impossible to hold a traditional event. Eighty percent of OIAF attendees are from out of town including large groups of animation students coming from the U.S.A. Organizers felt it was also much too risky on many levels.

The Animation Conference (TAC), OIAF’s industry event, will move online as well. Director Azarin Sohrabkhani is working to involve decision-makers from around the world. “This is a great opportunity to meet with even more potential partners than the live event since travel has been taken out of the equation,” Sohrabkhani observed.

More information about Online OIAF will be rolling out over the summer including pass and ticket prices and programming details.

The OIAF is organized by the Canadian Film Institute (CFI), a not for profit, charitable organization dedicated to inspiring audiences and helping them discover the world of cinema.

Genius Brands Sets Unprecedented Slate for Kartoon Channel

Following the Monday launch of its new free digital Kartoon Channel! across multiple AVOD and OTT platforms, Genius Brands International announced the outlet’s new programming slate of premium content for children 2-11 years old and their families. The news follows the company’s announcement that Arnold Schwarzeneggar, voice star and co-producer of upcoming original Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, has entered an agreement to become a significant investor in Genius Brands Int’l (further details below).

“Kartoon Channel!, our 24-hour, free, video on demand, children’s program service went live this morning with unprecedented distribution reach, and an unprecedented initial content lineup,” said Andy Heyward, Genius Brands CEO. “In my three decades in children’s programming, I have witnessed kid’s television evolve from Saturday morning network with shows such as Scooby-Doo and The Smurfs, to first run syndication with shows like Inspector Gadget and He-Man, to dedicated cable channels (Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network) to digital platforms ranging from Netflix, Hulu and Disney +, to game platforms, mobile, YouTube, and all of the new and emerging technologies.

“Throughout the above, I am not aware of seeing another channel launch with such a volume of content, across such a broad range of platforms, penetrating virtually the entire United States TV Household universe. We are loading our episodes as fast as possible across all platforms and expect to have over 4,000 episodes available by the end of this month. Similarly, we will expect all of our platforms to be rolling out with full delivery in the coming days.”

Among the initial 1,000 episodes of entertaining and enriching content offered on Kartoon Channel! is the animated short feature, The Pig on the Hill (watch trailer), narrated by Pierce Brosnan; the hugely successful Angry Birds series, from the billion-dollar franchise; Baby Einstein and the Baby Einstein shorts; Llama Llama shorts; and the Minecraft-themed show, Journey to the End. The upcoming comedy-adventure series, Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, currently in pre-production and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, will debut on Kartoon Channel! in Q1 2021.

    Superhero Kindergarten
    Superhero Kindergarten

“A volume of content this large, is not simply ‘flipping a light switch’,” Heyward continued. “That is particularly so when we vet every single episode to make sure that it is compliant with our programming code developed by Stanford University Professor Emeritus Don Roberts, with whom Kartoon Channel!’s Program Code was developed in order to ensure the delivery of positive purposeful content that parents can always know will provide safe viewing for their children.”

“Having produced and broadcast thousands of children’s episodes across a number of the kids networks, we wanted to make Kartoon Channel! stand out as a brand, not just because it is free and available to everyone, but by putting on shows, which tell positive stories. That is very very important to us,” said Kartoon Channel! Executive Chairman, Margaret Loesch.

Currently, Kartoon Channel! can be accessed via Apple TV Devices, Android (mobile devices), Android TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Roku Devices, Xumo, Dish (AVOD + SVOD), Sling (AVOD + SVOD). The Company’s other platforms are rolling out as fast as the content can be loaded.

“Kids and their parents want uplifting stories. They want positive messages. It is also important to us that Kartoon Channel! is free and available to everyone. It is no less important that the stories are positive and with enriching lessons, whenever possible,” added Heyward. “Representative of the original shows that we are proud of and which will differentiate Kartoon Channel! is The Pig on a Hill, narrated by Pierce Brosnan. It is a fantastic story, and without ever saying so, it is about kindness, and it is about getting along with people different than ourselves. We are going to be a positive channel, and not just a babysitter with a screen on it.”

“Added to the above, in midsummer Kartoon Channel! will introduce a hosted Friday Family Fun Film, for kids and parents to watch together every Friday night. In these times, it is harder for parents and kids to be out at the movies together. We will be producing and acquiring original animated family films. I remember as a kid when Walt Disney used to do that, on the Wonderful World of Disney. Years later, our Chief Content Officer, David Neuman, as President of Walt Disney Television, was overseeing that program. Shortly, we will have a similar product on Kartoon Channel! On the wall of my office, I have a big sign. It says, ‘WHY must this story be told?’ We want our audience to rest assured that we have asked and answered that question for everything we put on Kartoon Channel!.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger Enters into Agreement to Become Significant Investor in Genius Brands International:

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is starring in and co-producing the new animated children’s series, Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, has elected to receive warrants to purchase shares of Genius Brands Int’l common stock as an advance against his profit participation in the show. Any further payouts will likely be in the form of cash payments.

Created by Stan Lee as one of his final projects, the series, which will premiere in 2021 on Amazon Prime in the U.S., is co-produced by Genius Brands with China’s Alibaba Group, Lee’s POW! Entertainment and Schwarzenegger’s Oak Productions. Schwarzenegger, who also serves as executive producer, lends his voice as the lead character in the series. Co-creator of Deadpool, Fabian Nicieza, who has sold over 100 million comic books worldwide, is scripting the series. Genius Brands’ Chairman and CEO Andy Heyward; Paul Wachter, CEO of Main Street Advisors; and President of POW! Entertainment, Gill Champion, also serve as executive producers.

Schwarzenegger commented, “I am honored to help realize Stan’s vision of creating a children’s cartoon series that not only entertains with superhero adventures, but also imparts valuable lessons about the importance of health, exercise, nutrition, anti-bullying, and diversity. Andy Heyward is one of the industry’s most respected producers of children’s programming and working together we will be able to bring to life our shared vision of ‘content with a purpose,’ which parents can enjoy alongside their children while taking comfort in the moral and educational focus.”

Heyward said, “We are grateful to have Arnold, not only as a co-producer, but also as a warrant holder, which is a tribute to his belief in both the series and Genius Brands. Not only is Arnold a legendary entertainer and a leading voice in promoting children’s education and fitness, he is a uniquely accomplished investor who brings the perspective of having been Governor of California, the fifth largest economy in the world. I can think of no better or smarter partner.”

  • Annecy: Tomm Moore Reveals Inspirations Behind Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Wolfwalkers’

Annecy: Tomm Moore Reveals Inspirations Behind Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Wolfwalkers’

One of the most anticipated sessions at Annecy Festival Online this week was the “Work in Progress” look at Cartoon Saloon’s upcoming fall movie Wolfwalkers. Directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and art director Maria Pareja offered a rich collection of character designs, art, animatics and excerpts from the beautifully crafted 2D feature while discussing some of their inspirations, research work and artistic goals for the movie.

The extensively researched film, which will be released by Apple TV+ later this fall, is set in Ireland in the mid-17th century. It tells the story of Robyn, a young English apprentice hunter who comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack of wolves in the country. Her life changes after she saves a native girl named Mebh, who leads her to the discovery of the wolfwalkers and her transformation into the very thing her father (voiced by Sean Bean) is tasked to destroy.

    Wolfwalkers
    Wolfwalkers

Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon’s previous films include The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells, all of which were warmly received by critics and general audiences alike, and were all Oscar nominated. The film is co-produced by Cartoon Saloon, Dentsu Ent., Melusine Productions  and Folivari.

“Ross and I were inspired by the legends of wolfwalkers in Kilkenny, which we learned about when we were kids,” says Moore. “It’s basically the Irish version of a werewolf story, where they would leave their bodies and traverse the forests as wolves, while the human bodies would be asleep back at home.”

    Tomm Moore
    Tomm Moore

Moore and Stewart explain that the movie’s setting in 1650 coincides with the English Civil War, during which Oliver Cromwell led the Parliamentarian army against King Charles I. “He had a mission to tame the land and Ireland,” explains Moore. “It was this confluence of thinking about this mythology and this tribe of people that St. Patrick had blessed or cursed, and the fact that Cromwell had taken upon himself to kill all the wolves in Ireland.

Moore, who was nominated for two Oscars for directing The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, says he and his team explored all the possibilities of 2D animation and visual language to serve the main characters. The director points out that the film has this powerful central conflict. “Robyn is this young girl who has arrived from England, and her new friend is one of the wolves that her father is hunting,” notes the director. “Her personal journey takes her from being a girl who wants to be free to go hunting with her dad to discovering a greater freedom when she enters the world of the wolfwalkers.”

    Wolfwalkers
    Wolfwalkers

The filmmakers set up a great visual contrast between the organized, straight lines and confined world of the city and the free-flowing organic world of the Irish forests. They also used new dynamic camera movies, natural media mixed with previz that was done with 3D software to create a “wolf-vision,” to visualize how the world looks like from the point of view of the wolves as they run and roam the natural world.

These contrasts are also reflected in the design and animation of the characters. For example, Mebh’s animation is reminiscent of the loose, old-school style that goes back to Disney’s 1961 classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians, while Robyn’s dad and the soldiers’ designs echo a stricter, more regimented woodcut style.

“We use lots of shape, design and color languages and basically use all the tools in our toolbox to tell our story as expressively as possible,” says Moore. “One of the things about hand-drawn animation that differentiates it from other movies is that you can use the whole language of drawing, the history of painting and representation visually. You can use the space to compose in a very painterly way or a very abstractly depending on what you want audiences to feel during a specific scene.”

    Wolfwalkers

    Wolfwalkers
    Wolfwalkers

Moore said he and his team were thrilled to bring their co-production partners from France and Luxembourg to Kilkenny. “We love showing them bits of Ireland that have influenced our work,” says the director. “Song of the Sea’s dominant colors were blues and purples, while The Secret of Kells was mostly green. For Wolfwalkers, we have the green of the forest, and the orange colors of the trees in the fall and the wolves’ magic and some greys as well.” It can’t be a coincidence that the colors of the Irish flag are also green, white and orange!

  • Aardman Animations Announces Senior Appointments

Aardman, the multi-award-winning independent animation studio, announced on June 15 the promotions of Alison Taylor to Director of Distribution and Business Development and Rob Goodchild to Commercial Director.

These newly created roles in the Sales and Marketing arm of the business form part of a departmental restructuring to consolidate all the studio’s sales, marketing and brand management expertise. Taylor and Goodchild will be central to providing market insight, financing, distribution and licensing for Aardman’s portfolio of brands, which includes both its own IP and third-party properties represented by the company.

Alison Taylor, currently Head of Sales and Acquisitions at Aardman, will be responsible for driving the financing, distribution and long-term content exploitation strategy for each brand as Director of Distribution and Business.

Taylor joined the Broadcast and Development department in 2004, advancing through the sales team before being promoted to Head of Sales and Acquisitions in 2016. Since then, she has led the international distribution team and is responsible for global distribution of Aardman’s own award-winning series such as Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time along with third party distribution for children’s properties such as Digby Dragon (Blue Zoo Animation) and Brave Bunnies (Glowberry / Anima Kitchent) across all content platforms. Taylor also played an integral part in securing Aardman’s first Original with Netflix, Robin Robin, with financing content for new and existing brands being a key part to her new role.

Rob Goodchild joined Aardman as U.K. Licensing Manager in 2008 before progressing to Head of Licensing. In that time he secured major partnerships for all of Aardman’s key brands supporting global business growth, particularly in Japan and China, as well as working to deliver innovation-led projects such as The Big Fix Up, a new Wallace & Gromit immersive story told through AR (augmented reality) in collaboration with Fictioneers.

In his new position as Commercial Director, Goodchild will assume strategic responsibility for the selling and marketing of the studio’s services including third party commercials and short films, the rights exploitation for all Aardman brands, and defining new business opportunities such as the development of IP and animated content for third party brands, theme parks and attractions. He will be tasked with delivering revenue across different categories and markets, influencing growth in key territories across Europe and Asia. Goodchild also directs the development of Aardman’s branded interactive business, working to increase its presence in the gaming space and with pioneering companies to grow Aardman’s output in new technologies including AR and Blockchain.

Both Taylor and Goodchild will report to Sean Clarke, Managing Director at Aardman. Their promotions are effective immediately.

“Behind each of our beloved brands is a wealth of knowledge across rights, distribution, sales and marketing that, over recent years, has allowed us to start very successfully representing third party brands in addition to our own IP,” commented Clarke. “The restructuring of our Sales and Marketing arm is the natural next step in maximizing this industry-leading expertise, to continue to realize the full potential of Aardman’s IP alongside developing our studio service work for third party brands. Alison and Rob will make a formidable partnership, working alongside Lucy Wendover, who will continue to lead the Marketing and Brand team.”

Upcoming Aardman projects include the recently announced Robin Robin, a half-hour, festive, musical tale coming to Netflix in 2021, and a Shaun the Sheep half-hour special also for Christmas 2021.

In autumn of this year, the studio will launch Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up, a brand-new AR immersive experience created in collaboration with Fictioneers backed by funding from U.K. Research & Innovation (UKRI). Rendered in CG using the latest technology, fans will be able to interact in a host of new ways and get closer than ever to the iconic duo.

  • ‘Valiant Prince Ivandoe’ Quests on in Cartoon Network Long-Form Series

‘Valiant Prince Ivandoe’ Quests on in Cartoon Network Long-Form Series

Cartoon Network EMEA has announced that a long-form series of the award-winning shorts, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe, is in the works.

Created by Danish animators Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg – who began their animation careers on Cartoon Network’s EMEA-produced global hit series The Amazing World of Gumball – the comedy series of 10 three-minute shorts now has an order of 20 x 11′ episodes. It is being developed and co-written with executive producer Daniel Lennard, who also oversaw development on Gumball and Cartoon Network Studios’ Apple & Onion.

The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe tells the tale of Ivandoe, a delusional young prince who has embarked on an epically silly quest to Eagle Mountain, in search of the legendary Golden Feather. Accompanied by his squire and best friend, Bert, he travels through the Five Kingdoms, encountering royal rivals, magical fairy tale creatures and a bunch of assorted weirdos along the way!

The series is the latest European original to be commissioned by Cartoon Network, continuing the network’s commitment to investing in talent and content in the region. It will be produced in partnership with Copenhagen-based Sun Creature Studio, who also produced the successful shorts.

“It has been such an exciting journey creating The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe and seeing how well people have responded to the show,” said Bøving-Andersen and Wallberg. “We are now very happy to continue Ivandoe’s quests in a longer format, with even more silly characters and adventures, and we are very grateful to our magnificent team and to Cartoon Network for making this happen!”

Lennard added, “It’s been great fun working on this spectacularly silly show, bringing a cast of flawed but loveable characters to life. As with Gumball, we’ve created a self-contained world for kids – of all ages – to enjoy. It somehow makes complete sense, whilst at the same time making absolutely no sense whatsoever.”

First launched in 2017 as part of a unique interactive web game, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe has enjoyed glory among viewers and critics alike. It picked up four trophies at the 2018 Emile European Animation Awards and has received nominations for other prestigious awards and festivals, including BAFTA and Annecy Animation Festival. The interactive web game, which encourages users to quest with Ivandoe and Bert to unlock new episodes, has enjoyed significant fan engagement with an impressive 37 minutes average play time across the EMEA region.

  • SYFY Greenlights ‘Devil May Care’, 3 More Pilots for Adult Toon Block TZGZ

SYFY Greenlights ‘Devil May Care’, 3 More Pilots for Adult Toon Block TZGZ

SYFY announced new original projects for its late-night adult animation block, TZGZ, including a new original animated series and three original pilots. Airing every Saturday at midnight-ish, TZGZ is a 90-minute block of adult comedic, animated, genre-based programming of varying lengths. Since its 2019 debut, TZGZ has grown +7% in the 18-49 demo vs. prior year, and continues to bring younger viewers to the network.

Devil May Care, TZGZ’s second internally developed pilot greenlit to series, has earned a 7 x 15′ series pickup. The concept sees the Devil (Alan Tudyk, SYFY’s Resident Alien) hires a social media coordinator (Asif Ali, BoJack Horseman) to rebrand Hell as the ultimate place to live, and the two form the most unlikely of friendships. Recurring roles are played by Fred Tatasciore, Pamela Adlon and Stephanie Beatriz.

Created and executive produced by three-time Emmy winner Douglas Goldstein (Robot Chicken), the series is developed and executive produced by Amanda Miller at PSYOP in partnership with Emmy-award winning independent animation production company Titmouse. Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski and Ben Kalina from Titmouse are also executive producers.

    Cast & characters include:

    • Alan Tudyk as DEVIL – Impulsive and excitable, Devil needs to impress and be liked and just wants everyone in there to be happy in his rebranded Hell. Tudyk’s voice-over credits include Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
    • Asif Ali as BEANS – Inexperienced yet opinionated, Beans has no idea why he’s in Hell as Devil’s social media coordinator. Ali’s credits include the comedy special Goatface and The Mandalorian.
    • Pamela Adlon as REGINA – Conflicted with old succubus ways and new domestic position, Regina has no limits sexually and uses that seductively to get what she needs from men. Adlon’s credits include Better Things, King of Staten Island, Californication and animation’s King of the Hill.
    • Fred Tatasciore as PRESIDENT MCKINLEY – A man with no patience for fools, McKinley is the “Devil’s Advocate,” doing anything Devil needs to get done. Tatasciore has voiced roles for Family Guy, American Dad!, Robot Chicken, and plays Hulk in Marvel animated series.
    • Stephanie Beatriz as GLORIA – Here to serve, Gloria is the Head Demon of Hell who’s helpful to those she likes and condescending to those she doesn’t. Beatriz’s credits include Brooklyn Nine-Nine, In The Heights and animated features The LEGO Movie 1 & 2.

The three pilots greenlit by SYFY for TZGZ are:

From ShadowMachine (Final Space, BoJack Horseman), Chronicles of Frank follows an overzealous squirrel that kidnaps an exterminator from the Bronx, transporting him to a magical realm where he must conquer the forces of evil and maybe win back his girlfriend. Ordered for a 15-minute pilot, Chronicles of Frank is created and executive produced by Chris Osbrink (writer/director, TripTank, Campus Law), with ShadowMachine executive producers Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley.

In a galaxy far, far away there’s an epic war of the worlds where countless alien species will fight to the death – and The Black Hole is about the crappy dive bar where they drink. Picked up for a 15-minute pilot, The Black Hole from Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty, Moral Orel) is written and executive produced by Dino Stamatopoulos (creator, Moral Orel) and Michael Waldron (producer, Rick and Morty). Paul Young (EP, Key & Peele), James A Fino (EP, Rick and Morty), Duke Johnson (director, Anomalisa) and Nick Weidenfeld (President of Programming, Viceland) also executive produce.

Heavy is the belly that wears the suit in The Pole, a twisted, edgy comedy about the struggle for power on the North Pole. From Yeti Farm Creative (Hotel Transylvania: The Series Season 2, Pete the Cat Season 2), The Pole has been ordered for a 15-minute pilot. Created and executive produced by Matthew Bass (writer, Future Man) and Theodore Bressman (writer, Future Man; writer/EP, Jungleland). Mark Gordon (producer, Grey’s Anatomy, Ray Donovan) also executive produces, as well as Frank Saperstein and Jay Surridge from Yeti Farm Creative.

TZGZ’s originals slate also includes apocalyptic clip-riffing comedy Hell Den Season 2 (6 x 15′), produced by Shout! Studios and Rafael Raffaele Entertainment; Magical Girl Friendship Squad (6 x 15′), a female-driven, anime-inspired comedy about two young women who are destined to save the Universe … as soon as they figure out how to pay their rent (produced by Cartuna); and the block’s first internally developed pilot, Wild Life (6 x 15′), about animal friends trying to survive (and stave off boredom) on post-apocalyptic Earth, produced by Valparaiso Pictures and Octopie.

Previously announced pilots (see slate link above) include Plutonians (Brave Media/Yeti Farm Creative) and Psycho Psalms (Open the Portal/Jacob Robinson of Tractor Pants).

Acquired series include Alien’s Guide to Earth (10 x 1’30”, Mondo Media), Brogan: Master of Castles (6 x 5′, Mondo Media), Cyanide and Happiness (120 minutes’ worth of 1-4 min. episodes, Explosm Entertainment), Don’t Feed the Humans (17 x 5′, Look Mom!/Mondo Media), Dr. Havoc’s Diary (30 x 6′, New Form), Gary and His Demons (16 x 11′, Mondo Media), Purgatony (8 x 12′, Explosm Ent. /Blackpills/Studio71), Science! (6 x 4′, Cartuna), Hell Den S1 (6 x 11′, Shout! Studios/DrinkTV/Dr. God) and Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins (6 x 4′ Cartuna).

  • Academy Sets 93rd Oscars for April 25, Museum Opens April 30

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the ABC Television Network today announced the 93rd Oscars ceremony will move to Sunday, April 25, 2021, as a result of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. The show, which will air live on ABC, was originally scheduled for February 28, 2021.

Coinciding with the Oscars celebration, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, initially scheduled to open to the public on December 14, 2020, will now open on April 30, 2021, also as a result of the health crisis.

“For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “This coming Oscars and the opening of our new museum will mark an historic moment, gathering movie fans around the world to unite through cinema.”

“We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners at the Academy to ensure next year’s show is a safe and celebratory event that also captures the excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,” said Karey Burke, President, ABC Entertainment.

The Academy also recently announced the next phase of its representation and inclusion efforts, including increasing the Best Picture category nominee cap to 10 and a resolution to enact Governor term limits. Read more here.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (www.academymuseum.org), designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano and featuring six floors of exhibition spaces, education and special event spaces, a conservation studio, a restaurant, a museum store, the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater and the 288-seat Ted Mann Theater. Among the Museum’s inaugural exhibits will be a retrospective of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki — an unprecedented experience, the first of its kind in the U.S., hosted in the Marilyn & Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery. The exhibition is organized by Academy Museum curators Jessica Niebel and Raul Guzman, in collaboration with Studio Ghibli.

Bill Kramer, director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, said, “I speak for all of us at the Museum when I say that we have been eagerly awaiting the moment when we can share the Academy Museum with movie lovers everywhere. With the unprecedented and devastating pandemic happening around the world and our commitment first and foremost to the health and safety of our visitors and staff, we have made the difficult decision to wait a few more months to open our doors. Thankfully, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place, exhibitions continue to be installed. We look forward to April 2021 when Los Angeles and the world will be able to join together as the Academy celebrates the Oscars and the opening of its long-dreamed-of Museum.”

The eligibility period for Academy Awards consideration has been extended beyond the standard December 31 deadline: a feature film must now have a qualifying release date between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. The submission deadline for specialty categories (Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film) is December 1, 2020. The submission deadline for general entry categories, including Best Picture, Original Score and Original Song, is now January 15, 2021

Visit oscars.org/rules for the complete 93rd Academy Awards rules, revised with these dates and deadlines.

During this time, it has become necessary to make exceptional changes to the Academy’s standard annual awards schedule. The intent going forward is to ultimately return to awarding excellence for films released in the January-December calendar year. Future eligibility windows and the Oscar show date for 2022 will be announced at a later date.

  • Q&A: Smiley Guy’s Jonas Diamond Helps Toon-Up ‘One Day at a Time’

Q&A: Smiley Guy’s Jonas Diamond Helps Toon-Up ‘One Day at a Time’

On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Television’s One Day at a Time will unveil its first-ever animated special: “The Politics Episode.” Animation Magazine got to pull episode producer Jonas Diamond, Executive Producer & Co-Owner of Toronto’s Smiley Guy Studios (which produced the animation with Big Jump Ent. in Ottawa) about how this creative solution to continuing production in a new, 2D-animated dimension during COVID-19 shutdowns came together in just eight weeks.

One Day at a Time – “The Politics Episode,” guest starring Gloria Estefan, Melissa Fumero and Lin-Manuel Miranda, premiers on Sony’s Pop TV on Tuesday, June 16 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. More info and the previously revealed first-look clip here.

    Jonas Diamond
    Jonas Diamond

Animag: Can you tell us when you became involved with One Day at a Time?

Jonas Diamond: It was meant to be! A dear friend, Israel Schachter, introduced me to Dan Adler on March 27, who connected me with Brent Miller, who is an Executive Producer of One Day at a Time (ODAAT). I hopped on the phone with the entire ODAAT team the very next morning.

What were the producers looking for?

The producers were looking for someone competent yet crazy enough to take on the animation given the compressed schedule — I got the impression they had spoken with others who told them it was an impossibility.

How long did it take to produce this animated episode?

It took approximately eight weeks from conceptual design to animation delivery.

What kind of animation tools do you use at the studio?

We used Adobe tools in pre-production and Toon Boom Harmony for the animation.

How many people worked on the project?

We had the pleasure of partnering with Big Jump Entertainment in Ottawa to pull off this Herculean feat. Between us there were over 80 people who worked on the project.

What did you love about working on this show?

The creative. We had the good fortune of having an amazing script that translated beautifully to animation, and a wonderful cast who after three and a half seasons captured their character’s voice so well that it didn’t matter that they recorded in isolation at their homes — they nailed it! All of this made our job that much easier.

Justina Machado stars as Penelope (L), Gloria Estefan reprises her guest starring role as her mother, Lydia (R), in the special.
Justina Machado stars as Penelope (L), Gloria Estefan reprises her guest starring role as her mother, Lydia (R), in the special.

    What was your biggest challenge?

Time. We had a locked script and a fixed airdate, so we had to be innovative in compressing what usually takes [approximately] 29 weeks into eight weeks without sacrificing quality or the creative. Thankfully, the whole ODAAT team were incredible collaborators who were highly responsive to our needs, coming up with creative solutions when necessary.

Have other live-action shows contacted you to go the animated route after this?

    Yes. Ssshh…

What was the biggest lesson you learned from this experience?

When you surround yourself with the right people, you can make the impossible a reality. The co-director, M.R. Horhager, adopted a streamlined communication approach irrespective of hierarchy to ensure work was done right the first time. And the same goes for the constant communication amongst Rodrigo Amador (Animation Executive Producer), Joel Gregorio (Animation Producer), Jennifer Griffiths (Animation Production Manager), Andrew Blondin (Animation Director) and Sam Thomson (Animation Editor) who also took on more tasks than they would normally do on a project given we had no margin for error.

How much does the budget compare to doing the same show in live-action if that was possible today?

I am not sure what the live-action budget for the show is, but don’t tell me if you find out as I don’t want to experience any seller’s remorse! Haha.

  • Daisy Ridley Stars in Baobab’s ‘Baba Yaga’, Annecy First-Look

Baobab Studios has announced the casting of Daisy Ridley in the lead role of “Magda” in their newest immersive experience, Baba Yaga. First announced today within the studio’s special Work in Progress presentation at the Annecy International Animation Festival’s 2020 Online edition (annecy.org), the studio also revealed a first look at Ridley’s character, the story and style behind Baba Yaga and insight into their unique approach to interactive filmmaking.

In Baba Yaga, viewers will be invited as a main character into a haunting fairytale world completely reimagined, and their choices will determine the ending of this story of love, fortitude and magic. Sometimes a force for evil, sometimes a force for good, the enigmatic witch Baba Yaga uses her powers to stop the villagers whose settlement encroaches upon her enchanted forest. When the viewer’s mother, the village chief, falls deathly ill, it is up to them and their sister Magda to do the unthinkable — enter the forest, uncover its hidden mysteries and get the cure from Baba Yaga. Ultimately, every decision the viewer makes matters … even whether humanity and nature can live in balance.

“Baobab is at the very forefront of VR and interactive animation, so it’s been exciting to work with Eric and the team to bring such a beautiful story to life. I love playing Magda, because she is brave, vulnerable and fiercely protective of her family all at the same time. The idea that the viewer will be able to genuinely interact with my character in this magical world and help steer the course of the narrative is so amazing,” said Ridley, who rocketed to global stardom when she joined the Star Wars universe as “Rey” in The Force Awakens.

“We are so fortunate to have Daisy breathe life into the role of Magda, as her talent and energy for the project fuels us all. She has such a way of always finding the right tone and delivering the most meaningful performance for any scene. Her work is such a huge inspiration to our animators,” added Eric Darnell, Baobab Studios’ Co-founder/CCO and director of Baba Yaga.

Maureen Fan, CEO and Co-founder of Baobab Studios, said, “We’re so honored to work with a talent like Daisy Ridley who is such a strong role model to women of all ages. She IS Magda — fierce, brave and independent.”

The Baobab Studios team will participate in a Live Q&A hosted by the Annecy Festival on Tuesday, June 23 at 9 a.m. PST / 6 p.m. France time, which will be open to the public (register here.). Featured panelists will include several key creatives from the production, including Darnell, co-director Mathias Chelebourg, development producer Shannon Ryan and animation supervisor, Ken Fountain.

“I wanted to start Baobab because I love animation. You know how when you were really young you thought you could do absolutely anything? You thought you could be an astronaut, a musician, athlete, anything, but something happens as you get older. But when I watch animation, or play animation in a game, I am brought back to that five-year-old sense of self where I think that anything is possible and I feel invincible. And it inspires me afterwards to go after my dreams, and that is the power of animation. I want everyone to feel invincible. I want to inspire you to dream by bringing out your sense of wonder, and you matter. That’s our mission at Baobab.”

    — Maureen Fan, CEO & Co-founder, Baobab Studios (Annecy WIP Session)

Directed by Darnell and co-directed by Chelebourg, Baba Yaga is a contemporary portrayal of the Eastern European legend inspired by illustrative 2D pop-up animation, hand-drawn and stop-motion styles, creating a modern visual language for VR inspired by classic animation. Leveraging the studio’s award-winning animation pioneers and interactive gaming veterans, Baba Yaga blends theater, cinema, interactivity, AI and animation into a unique experience that explores themes of empowerment and environmentalism.

Baba Yaga will premiere in multiple formats later this year. Visit www.baobabstudios.com to learn more.

    Annecy Panel Unboxes ‘Animal Crackers’

A circus mystery takes some transformative, often furry, twists and turns in Animal Crackers — a CG animated feature film which will debut in 190 countries through Netflix on July 24. In this week’s live Q&A panel for the Annecy Festival Online (annecy.org), directors Tony Bancroft (Mulan) and Scott Christian Sava, also the film’s writer, discuss their colorful big top tale of a family who turn to magical box of Animal Crackers to save a run-down circus from being taken over by their evil uncle.

In the session, Sava will share how he came up with the film’s concept while enjoying a snack and playing make-believe with his young twin boys. “The idea just came to me: What if you eat a lion cookie, and poof! You become a lion? … The kids loved it and we played for the rest of the day like that, eating Animal Crackers and pretending we were that animal.” The idea later evolved into a graphic novel where some youngsters harness the power of these magical munches to rescue the animals from a circus.

Bancroft will discuss how the duo’s friendship and the uniqueness of the story led him from the world of traditional hand-drawn animation into recapturing the old-timey enchantment of the circus with a cutting-edge CG look inspired by unique production design and major studio-level quality of style and scope.

The directors will be joined by animation veteran Carter Goodrich (Monsters, Inc., Ratatouille, Despicable Me, The Croods, Hotel Transylvania), who created the vibrant, cartoony character designs for the film — despite his aversion to clowns. Bancroft and Sava will also delve into the incredible talent they were able to pull in for all aspects of creating an epic and emotive cinematic experience.

On top of its pedigreed creative team, Animal Crackers features a stellar voice cast: John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Danny DeVito, Ian McKellen, Raven-Symoné, Harvey Fierstein, Sylvester Stallone, Gilbert Gottfried, Patrick Warburto and Tara Strong.

Tony Bancroft spent 12 years as an animator with Disney Studios, helping create and animate beloved characters like Pumbaa (The Lion King), Kronk (The Emperor’s New Groove), Cogsworth (Beauty and the Beast) and Iago (Aladdin). He was the co-director of Disney’s Mulan, for which he received the Annie Award for Director of the Year; and animation supervisor of Sony’s Stuart Little 2, for which he received the VES Award for character animation. Bancroft recently returned to animation for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and, currently, Warner Brothers’ Space Jam 2, animating Looney Tunes characters. He and his twin brother, Tom, started a popular podcast focusing on the animation industry called The Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast, which is the #1 podcast for animation on iTunes.

Over the last 20 years, Scott Christian Sava‘s work has brought some of the world’s most beloved characters to life in film, television, comics and games. His first feature film gig was Casper the Friendly Ghost. By 2000, Sava’s animation was in such demand that he formed Blue Dream Studios, pioneering the concept of global virtual studios. Star Wars, X-Files, Aliens vs. Predator, Spider-Man and many more franchises soon became a part of this emerging studio. In 2002, Blue Dream began publishing its own successful book content. Disney purchased the rights to produce Pet Robots as a feature film in 2006. Since then, four other studios have done the same and several more are in development. That same year, Sava began putting The Dreamland Chronicles online — Now, over 29 million readers have come to the site and over 500,000 hits a day are generated. Animal Crackers is Sava’s first movie, and he is “living the dream” in his hometown of Franklin, Tennessee.

‘Connected’ Team Offers Sneak Peek of Sony’s Fun Fall Movie

The team behind Sony Pictures Animation’s much-anticipated fall release Connected offered a sneak peek of their colorful new movie as part of the Annecy Festival’s online offerings today (annecy.org). The presentation, which was introduced by the film’s Oscar-winning exec producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (against a digital Annecy backdrop), offered a fun look at the feature which centers on a typical modern American family who finds themselves fighting global tech uprising while driving cross country to drop off the daughter at her film school in California.

Writer-director Mike Rianda (a veteran of Disney Channel’s Gravity Falls) was on hand to talk about how the film tries to push what audiences expect to see in a big studio animated feature. “It has been a dream project and all of us who worked on the movie grew up loving animation and watching cartoons,” said Rianda. “We got to try out a lot of ideas, and the movie is full of ideas that crack us up or make us laugh and cry. We wanted to make a movie where the artists really had a say and where the best idea wins, and Sony has been great in letting us make the movie we wanted to make.”

Rianda explained that because of the huge success of the studio’s Oscar-winning movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony received encouragement from the world that people want to see new stories and fresh animation styles. “That’s why we were constantly looking at ways to make our movie more exciting and more unique.”

The filmmaker then talked about his personal inspirations for the movie and how he thought about what he wanted to focus on in the film during a long five-hour drive to his hometown. “I wanted to feature two things that I love very much: my insane family and technology,” he explained. “As a kid I was fascinated by robots, and growing up, I became interested in how technology is affecting our world. I thought it was interesting to focus on what is great about humanity that cannot be replaced by robots, and what is it about technology that can bring us together, and also can take us away from each other.”

The presentation also included a brief visit with the movie’s talented head of story Guillermo Martinez, who shared some wonderful drawings about his experiences working from home with his wife and baby. The film’s production designer and lead character designer Lindsey Olivares was also on hand to teach viewers how to draw the film’s adorable, chubby pug Monchi.

Annecy Festival Organizers Share Tidbits About the Online Edition

We recently caught up with Annecy Festival artistic director Marcel Jean and CITIA CEO Mickaël Marin, who were kind enough to share their thoughts about this year’s online event, which takes place June 15-30 (annecy.org). An online festival pass will only cost you 15 euros ($17) and a MIFA accreditation costs 110 euros ($125) for professionals. You can read more about this year’s offerings in Animation Magazine‘s pre-festival coverage.

Animag: We are sure these past few months have been quite hectic for you. How do you feel about the current plans to have the festival online this year?

Mickaël Marin: At the beginning of April, it became clear that it was impossible to think about an international festival in Annecy in June. We analyzed the possibility of postponing the event, but even that was quite problematic. Because the selection was almost completed, because we knew that it would have been impossible to imagine keeping all these films for 2021, we’ve decided to go online. At this point, what was a problem the day before became an opportunity: you must motivate your team to innovate and find different ways to create a nice event.

Marcel Jean: It’s important to say something: the decision to go online was made because we did not want to leave all the artists with nothing in front of them for months. I believe a selection in Annecy is something important for them. An award in Annecy means a lot. So, for us, it was a question of showing our respect, our admiration and our love for their work. We also wanted to offer something to our passionate and faithful festivalgoers. Because the audience in Annecy is the best audience in the world!

What will you miss most about having a live event this year?

MJ: The people. Annecy is the place where you can meet your friends, your business partners — and your few enemies — of the animation world. I’m always happy to see how students can access people from the major studios, how animators who work for TV can meet with experimental filmmakers, etc. There is no equivalent to the atmosphere of Annecy.

MM: We will certainly miss the big screen on the Paquier, which is our signature. And the incredible atmosphere at the MIFA.

What do you think are the highlights of the online festival?

MM: Our team worked very hard to have original and exclusive content. Annecy is well known for its Work in Progress presentations. In collaboration with the producers, we’ve found a way to offer these presentations to the audience.

MJ: I’m especially happy with the TV programs competition. It’s a very strong year and I hope the online format will allow more people to watch it.

The Cuphead Show (Netflix) is one of the WIP series projects for 2020

Have you experienced some of the other festivals and events online this year? What is the biggest drawback?

MJ: I didn’t had a lot of time to really experience the other online festivals. I had some quick looks on some platforms. To me, the main challenge is to create some “evenementiel sense” during the online festival. You don’t want to have something flat. You want to create excitement.

MM: Me neither, but I took time to talk to some other festival directors and they generously shared their experience with us. The biggest drawback is probably your capacity to react to the audience, to adjust your behavior and your approach to the actual situation. Our organization is usually very reactive. Every year we are facing new situations and we are reacting very fast. Our team is experienced and proactive. We have an incredible capacity to improvise. This year it will be different. Certainly, less natural for everybody.

What were the biggest challenges for you this year?

MJ: To create an exciting experience for the festivalgoers. I don’t worry at all about the quality of the product. The films are great, the original content will be great. The challenge is to create a kind of interaction. It may look like a paradox, because the Internet is a place for interactivity, but it’s not so simple to recreate the level of interactivity you have when hundreds of filmmakers and thousands of viewers are together in the same physical space.

MM: Another challenge was the impossibility to conceive Annecy online as a local event. Everything would have been more simple if we would have accepted to geolocate the access. But Annecy is an international event and it seemed absurd to us to back off on this aspect. There is also an economical challenge. There was no business plan for an event like that, so we are jumping the cliff and making the parachute while we are falling.

Was it difficult to get film and shorts distributors to agree to having their films available online?

MJ: Surprisingly not. You know, we are all in the same boat. So, once past the first days, when some filmmakers, producers and distributors were still hoping to premiere their films in a major international festival this summer, the reality and the time frame of the consequences of the pandemic hit everybody.

There were two types of problems. First, the films that were not completed when we decided to select them. With the confinement, the production of some of these films was interrupted. So they had to withdraw. The second problem was with the feature films. The financial structure of a feature is usually built on the investment of some distributors, of more than a television network, of a sales agent, etc. So, we had to imagine different ways to qualify these films for the competition.

Can you tell us a bit about how MIFA is approaching the online component of the festival?

MM/Véronique Encrenaz (head of MIFA): MIFA is adapting also to the situation and will maintain most of its content and networking events. As with the festival, when COVID-19 forced us to stay at home, most of the content had been selected already. It was essential for us to find the way to show it to the animation community.

MIFA Pitching sessions as well as Pitching Territory Focus sessions will be programmed starting June 15. Project creators will be asked to pre-tape their pitch, which will be put online starting June 16, and available for two weeks until June 30. Each of them will benefit online one to one sessions with professionals. MIFA Campus will be maintained and opened to all, with around 15 sessions of training sessions, panels or artists talks.

Networking events will also be maintained for most of them: “Meet the…” with festival programmers, publishers and music composers will take place online, with pre-arranged one-on-one meetings. Buyers will benefit from the usual “Share with” sessions, with two options: either pre-arranged one to one meetings or 30 min. live sessions with Q&A. Industry territory focus sessions/MIFA special events/press conferences will include both pre-taped panels and live presentations with Q&A.

And in order to answer the needs of all professionals around the world looking for visibility and contacts, virtual stands are proposed to all MIFA-registered companies, offering them the possibility to gather content and get in direct live-chat contact with connected professionals.

How do you keep yourself sane and inspired during the quarantine period in France?

MM: I have a lot of work to do, but I also have a family and to be in confinement with my kids and wife is also a great opportunity. In recent years I travelled a lot and the kids are growing so fast… It’s great to be with them.

MJ: I’m based in Canada, so I can’t tell you about France. However, I have so much work with the organization of the online festival that I don’t suffer so much from the quarantine. Days are going very fast…

Do you see a silver lining in all this?

MM: I think it could be good for the team spirit. We are facing a crisis together. I feel solidarity between the different services. We will be a stronger team at the end.

MJ: When I was appointed as the artistic director eight years ago, I wanted to create an Annecy Online. I never really had the time nor the means to do it. Now, I’m trying something.

Have you seen any animated shorts that perfectly reflect what we are going through all over the world?

MJ: Absolutely! Empty Places, by Geoffroy de Crécy. It’s in the short films competition.
