Rising Sun Pictures Marks 25 Years of Making Movie Magic

Australia’s Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) reached its 25th anniversary Monday — the latest milestone for the visual effects studio which, from humble beginnings, has gone on to produce ground-breaking work for more than 150 motion picture and series productions, including some of the most popular and critically-acclaimed films of the past two decades.

RSP’s work has been honoured with Visual Effects Society (VES) and Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (AACTA) awards, as well as contributing to Oscar and BAFTA winning films. It has forged long-standing relationships with top studios and producers worldwide, and launched the careers of scores of incredibly successful visual effects supervisors, producers and artists.

How has a mid-sized studio in Adelaide, South Australia managed to thrive for so long in an industry noteworthy for its boom-or-bust business cycles, rapidly evolving technology, and intense, international competition? Tony Clark, the company’s Co-Founder and Managing Director, sums it up in a single word, “Trust.”

Located halfway around the world from its studio clients, RSP has focused relentlessly on earning trust.

“It’s about being honest and transparent in your relationships and building confidence over time,” Clark explains. “It’s doing what you say you are going to do, doing it well and doing it consistently, year after year. We feel fortunate to have formed good-quality relationships with our clients. Many of them who were with us at the start remain our friends to this day.”

Clark and partners, Wayne Lewis and Gail Fuller, were fortunate in their timing when they formed RSP during a meeting at the Rising Sun Inn in suburban Adelaide in 1995. The release a few years earlier of James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the first studio film to feature a lead character produced with computer graphics, had sparked a boom in visual effects and created demand for new suppliers.

“There was a scarcity of resources and companies that could reliably deliver quality at a good price,” recalls Clark. “That created an opening and we worked diligently in those early years to fill it.”

    RSP founders, then and now.

After cutting its teeth on smaller and independent films, RSP made a breakthrough in Hollywood in 2001, when it was awarded work on Warner Bros.’ Red Planet. Impressing Warner Bros.’ production team with its ability to deliver high quality shots quickly, the studio soon began attracting work on other blockbusters, including The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, as well as key effects scenes for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. RSP worked on four more films in the Harry Potter franchise, as well as other key sequences in The Hunger Games, X-Men, and creating the lead character Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web.

As a mid-sized studio, RSP gained a reputation for a hand-crafted approach toward visual effects production, one that allowed artists considerable creative freedom. Ambitious, talented artists found that appealing.

“As we began working on bigger films, we started to hire artists from the States and London,” notes Co-Founder Gail Fuller. “Many had worked at big facilities where their tasks were narrowly focused. They felt like workers on a production line. Here, they felt more ownership of their shots and engaged in the project as a whole. They could point to the screen and say, ‘Hey, that’s my shot!’”

In recent years, the studio has been called on to take the lead on ever-more technically and creatively challenging effects sequences. It shared an Oscar nomination for its work in designing and executing the time-bending “Quicksilver Kitchen” scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It also created the heart-stopping re-entry sequence featured in the final moments of Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (winner of the 2013 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects). For 2019 Best Picture nominee Ford v Ferrari, the studio created a digital replica of Daytona International Speedway, as it appeared in 1966, and filled it with thousands of digital actors in period costumes. Most recently, it has created eye-popping visuals for Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

The opportunity to make meaningful contributions to impactful scenes on high-profile films has helped RSP build a remarkably stable workforce. In the contract-driven visual effects industry artists often denote their work histories in terms of months, but many of the artists and producers at RSP have been with the company for years, some for decades.

“Working at RSP has never felt like a job,” says Ben Paschke, a Look Development Lead who has been with the studio since the late ’90s. “It’s always been about working creatively with very smart people and problem-solving. Every project is so different from the one before, you never run out of opportunities to rethink techniques and build new skills.”

RSP’s Adelaide location has also contributed to its ability to retain staff. While the city offers the conveniences of a large urban center, it has a small-town vibe, an enviable climate and spectacular scenery. For artists emigrating from Los Angeles or London, it’s also remarkably affordable.

“Adelaide is a lovely place for artists who want to raise a family,” says Maree Friday, an Adelaide native and Executive Assistant at RSP for 18 years. “Our new recruits love the fact that there’s not a lot of traffic and they can go to the beach or wineries on the weekend.”

The studio’s management has also encouraged longevity in its staff by fostering a sense of shared purpose. As filmmakers themselves, they are motivated by the same passions as their artists.

“I think the loyalty comes from the fact that the company was established by people who love making films,” observes Sara Henschke, Inductions and Resource Administrator, who was part of the studio’s original staff. “The fluid nature of the industry means that staff come and go, but we’ve got a solid, stable core and newcomers tend to be like-minded people who bring fresh energy and new approaches.”

Another early member of the studio’s staff, Didier Elzinga (now CEO of the software company Culture Amp), attributes RSP’s success to persistence: “Some incredible visual effects companies have come and gone over the past 25 years. One thing I learned during my 13 years at RSP is ‘never give up.’ The industry is volatile and challenging, but every problem is solvable. You just have to keep going.”

From a business and marketing perspective, RSP’s Adelaide location may have initially been an obstacle, but, in the long run, has proven to be a tremendous asset. It has forced the company to find ways to compete with local vendors on an equal footing. In order to efficiently review media with studios, RSP assisted in the development of cineSync, an early remote collaboration technology. (Tony Clark was part of the group that was awarded an AMPAS Scientific and Technical Achievement Award for cineSync in 2010). RSP has also been an early adopter of high-speed file transfer and data security technologies. That experience has proven advantageous during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were able to quickly get people working from home with appropriate solutions for data management and security,” says VFX Bidding Producer Ian Cope. “Our studio clients are impressed with how far ahead we are. We have a robust infrastructure to support remote work and are very mindful of security.”

RSP has also taken a deliberate approach toward cultivating new talent. Eight years ago, Co-Founder Wayne Lewis led an effort to develop a training program at the studio. Since then, it has developed into an accredited, multi-tiered educational program for prospective visual effects artists, operated in tandem with the University of South Australia.

“Our aim was to create a local talent base with the expertise necessary to enter the industry,” explains Lewis. “It began as a small experiment but is now a full-fledged undergraduate and graduate program. We deliver structured learning that accelerates the development of young artists.”

The program produces up to one hundred capable junior artists each year, enough not only to fulfill RSP’s needs for entry-level talent, but also to fill jobs at other visual effects studios across Australia and elsewhere.

“That was part of the plan,” Lewis continues. “The program is not only meant to help us; it’s designed to advance the industry in Australia as a whole. We want Adelaide to become a destination for people who want to work in visual effects.”

    Gravity

As RSP embarks on its second quarter century, it is looking to evolve. The entertainment industry is changing. With the growing popularity of streaming, the studio is taking on more series projects. It also seeks out other opportunities.

“We want to move outside our comfort zone,” says Cope. “We want to innovate and push ourselves. There are a lot of interesting opportunities and as we find the right ones, we’ll run with them.”

Clark says that while that evolution and adaptation are crucial to RSP’s future, the studio will stay true to its founding principles: “Companies like ours are only as good as their people. If you remove the people from RSP, you’re left with computers, and computers don’t make pictures by themselves. At the end of the day, we will continue doing what we’ve always done: produce high quality work that is memorable and moves audiences. That’s why good clients come to us and it’s why good people want to work here.”

  • Papercutz Brings Beloved ‘Asterix’ Comics to US This Summer

Papercutz Brings Beloved ‘Asterix’ Comics to US This Summer

A brilliant bright spot has arrived for fans of iconic European comics: The full line of all-time best-selling Asterix comics are arriving in the U.S. this summer in new editions through leading kids’ graphic novel publisher Papercutz. Older fans can enjoy reliving the adventures of Asterix and Obelix, while a new generation of young readers learns to love their historical hijinx.

“I grew up reading Asterix, among many other great European comics, and it grew with me. As I got older, I started to appreciate the less-obvious humor: the satire of our ways; the cameo appearances of famous people, beautifully caricatured by Uderzo; the spoof of the ways of different countries Asterix and Obelix would visit,” said Terry Nantier, Publisher of Papercutz.

“[René] Goscinny once described the evolution of Asterix‘s appeal in a telling way: at signings, first it was the kids claiming autographs, then it became parents asking for their children, then the adults asking for themselves. Asterix became a beacon showing comics could be so much more than people had believed. Oh, the revolution that followed… After 60 years, the little Gaul Asterix is an ongoing mighty hit in most countries and languages and thus has proven himself to cross borders very successfully. We say watch out America, Asterix’s magic potion is coming for you next!”

Since Asterix first appeared as a French comics hero in 1959, the ancient Gaul warrior has been featured in 38 books which have sold close to 380 million copies worldwide as well as 50 million album collections. The series, written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo, has been translated into 111 languages and dialects (including Latin!), adapted into 10 animated and four (soon to be five) live-action films, and even inspired a full theme park outside of Paris.

Now, Papercutz is re-translating and publishing every volume of the 38 Asterix titles for an American audience. The new editions will launch on July 14 with two omnibus volumes of three stories each, starting at the beginning of the series, plus a stand-alone edition of the newest book, #38: The Chieftain’s Daughter, which was released internationally in October 2019 and promptly sold 5 million copies worldwide. Four revised omnibus volumes will be released, with three albums each, every year until the series is complete.

Asterix comics are currently (from the 35th volume) created by hand-picked inheritors chosen by Uderzo and Goscinny’s daughter, Anne: writer Jean-Yves Ferri and illustrator Didier Conrad.

The U.S. specialized versions are being produced with a focus on making the original French puns work for American English readers, as well as making the ancient European and Latin references more understandable this side of the pond. Papercutz has tapped veteran comics translator Joe Johnson for the project, working from the original French. Johnson is a Professor of French and Spanish at Clayton State University (Atlanta) who has published more than 200 translations of American, British and French publications since 1997.

Check out a preview of the first Omnibus here.

“As a child, I was a passionate reader of comics — Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates, Alex Ramond’s Flash Gordon, and the wonderful Mickey Mouse pages drawn by Floyd Gottfredson. These artists motivated me to create something of my own,” said Asterix co-creator and illustrator, Albert Uderzo. “It is therefore with great pleasure and pride that I present these new American editions of the Asterix adventures, originally created with my late friend René Goscinny. I hope our little Gauls continue to inspire budding cartoonists and writers, and keep making readers laugh!”

The Asterix Omnibus Volumes 1 and 2 will be released in full-color hardcover ($22.99) and full-color paperback ($14.99). The Chieftain’s Daughter will be released in full-color hardcover ($9.99).

    The Asterix Story:

It’s the year 50 BC. All of Gaul is occupied by the Romans… Well, not all of it. A village inhabited by resolute Gauls resists the invaders again and again, and that doesn’t make life easy for the garrisons of Roman soldiers in the fortified camps of Babaorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Lilchum…

The village’s hero: Asterix, a warrior as ingenious as he is small. With the help of his super-strong friend Obelix, the druid Panoramix, and a magic potion which provides superhuman strength, Asterix constantly thwarts the schemes of Julius Caesar and resists Roman invaders, coming to the aid of those victimized by history’s most famous Roman. Set in ancient France, it’s a classic David and Goliath story, the underdog triumphing over the behemoth. Asterix offers a humorous and subversive look at social customs and stereotypes, dismantling cliches and highlighting the heroism and absurdity in us all.

Kids Media Vets Launch Cookbook Media IP Development Shop

Esteemed children’s media and consumer products industry executives, Claudia Scott-Hansen and Rob Bencal, bring their combined expertise to the formation of an all-new agency, Cookbook Media LLC, designed to provide IP owners and content creators with a one-stop-shop to building global franchise value through brand development, licensing, marketing and content strategy and distribution.

“We’ve been witnessing the incredible shift in our industry over the years, from a major evolution in technology, to consumer viewing and buying habits,” said Scott-Hansen. “Rob and I realized that there was a prevalent need for strategy and expertise by content creators and producers without their own distribution or franchise development teams. The current COVID-19 health crisis has exacerbated that need, and the request for flexible and dynamic partnerships, which don’t really exist within the current corporate environment. Our new agency allows us to deliver on that flexibility and lend our extensive skill sets to clients whose vision we truly share.”

“With the formation of Cookbook Media, Claudia and I are in a position to work with clients to create the global strategy for their IP from concept to the screen — whether it be linear, digital or theatrical — and to the retail shelf using our combined expertise in global franchise building, marketing, licensing and merchandising and content distribution,” stated Bencal. “We are thrilled to kick-off this new venture working with Island of Misfits and T&B Media Global to create a long-term strategy and brand value.”

Cookbook Media has been appointed the agency of record for all properties in the catalog of Canada’s Island of Misfits (“IoM” Media Ventures Inc.), which is currently in development on renowned brand creator Keith Chapman’s (Bob the Builder, PAW Patrol) new CGI-animated preschool property, Farm on Mars.

“Cookbook Media’s vast breadth of knowledge perfectly complements the IoM team’s experience in launching IP into the global marketplace,” commented Dana Landry, President & CEO, IoM Media Ventures Inc. “We have a great year ahead as we further develop our new brand, Keith Chapman’s Farm on Mars, and our upcoming IP slate of properties.”

T&B Media Global, a leading content production and distribution company based in Bangkok, Thailand, has also retained Cookbook Media to consult on IP development and international partnerships for properties across their animated feature film / series and live-action features portfolio.

“When we were looking at how we could best maximize the potential of our brand, we knew we needed an agency that could bring a broad spectrum of capabilities to the table from partnerships to development, and with Rob and Claudia’s vast experience in the industry, having both worked on renowned global hit properties, we know have the right team in place to take T&B to the next level,” said Dr. Jwanwat Ahriyavraromp, CEO, T&B Media Global.

In addition to industry corporations and studios, Cookbook Media will also represent independent content creators to develop their IP and market distribution strategies and is currently working on two projects to be announced at a later date.

Emmy-Winning ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ Writer Martin Pasko Dies

TV and comic-book writer Martin Pasko, known for his work on iconic DC lines like Superman and Daytime Emmy Award-winning turn as writer and story editor for Batman: The Animated Series as well as its feature film, Mask of the Phantasm, has died at age 65. Friend and fellow writer Alan Brennert shared in a Facebook post that Pasko passed Sunday night of natural causes. He had been living in North Hills, CA.

Pasko was born Jean-Claude Rochefort in Quebec in 1954. The aspiring writer got a foot in the comic-books door with frequent appearances in the letter columns of comics and in fanzines — he and Brennert even founded their own, Fantazine. Pasko began writing for comics in 1972, becoming a regular contributor to DC titles including Superman, DC Comics Presents and Superman Family by 1974. He also penned installments of the publisher’s Justice League of America, Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing.

Continuing to work in comics throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Pasko added a proliferation of TV titles to his resume — somewhat of a hit list of nostalgic animation. Pasko wrote or was story editor for Mister T, Blackstar, Thundarr the Barbarian, Goldie Gold and Action Jack, The Berenstain Bears, G.I. Joe, Moon Dreamers, My Little Pony ‘n Friends, the Superman TV shorts (“Fugitive from Space”), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars!, The Legend of Prince Valiant, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Mega Man, Exosquad and, most recently, Cannon Busters (2019).

Pasko was twice nominated for the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program for Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, in 1993 (when he shared the win with Paul Dini, Michael Reaves and Sean Catherine Derek) and in 1994. He also wrote the screenplay for the feature-length Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993).

His live-action writer and story editor credits included The Twilight Zone, Simon & Simonand Roseanne, as well as episodes of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Incredible Hulk and Max Headroom.

In the ’90s, Pasko was on staff for both the Disney Comics label and DC, where he was the mass market group editor and liaison to Warner Bros. Studios until 2005. In this role, he consulted on the development of theatrical and TV projects including Birds of Prey and Smallville. As former president of DC Paul Levitz wrote on Facebook, “[T]he odds are you’ve read his work, credited or not, or enjoyed a comic or cartoon or TV show or even a theme park event he made better…”

The data can then be streamed to Faceware-supported plugins in Unreal Engine, Unity and MotionBuilder (and soon Maya), for live streaming or recording in-engine on an avatar.

“This is more than just a rebranding of our LIVE product – Faceware Studio is a complete re-engineering of our real-time platform,” said Peter Busch, VP of Business Development at Faceware Technologies. “Based on what we’ve learned from the market over the past few years about how people create and work with realtime facial animation, we re-thought the entire product from the ground up to make it easier to use, more intuitive, and to produce higher quality animation. The initial response during the beta was extremely positive, and we’re excited to be releasing it for all of our users.”

Introducing Faceware Studio from Faceware on Vimeo.

    New Features

Enhanced Facial Tracking Technology: Studio contains sweeping updates to our underlying tracking technology, leveraging the latest machine learning techniques to improve the quality and robustness of our tracking and animation. Users will enjoy better results across an even wider range of cameras and capture scenarios with both live video and pre-recorded media.

‘Rubbish World of Dave Spud’ Sprouts S2 Order, Publishing Deal

CITV (U.K.) have commissioned a second series of animated comedy adventure The Rubbish World of Dave Spud for broadcast in Winter 2020, from London-based The Illuminated Film Company. CITV first launched the new British animated series in September 2019 and following a successful run and record ratings, the leading commercial children’s channel has commissioned an additional 52 episodes for delivery over 2020 and 2021.

The Rubbish World of Dave Spud is not your average series and has pushed the boundaries of entertainment for children aged 6 to 11, and quickly became CITV’s third most-watched after-school show with over 226,000 viewers. The series focuses on the no-nonsense, close-knit Spud family and their amazing escapades.

Created by the series’ director Edward Foster and developed by The Illuminated Film Company, the series boasts a top-notch voice cast, returning for Season 2: Johnny Vegas voicing the eponymous hero Dave Spud, Gina Yashere as his friend, Gareth the Starfish; Phillip Glenister and Arthur Smith as Dave’s mum Betty and dad George, respectively; Lisa Hammond playing Anna, Dave’s sister; and Jane Horrocks as the outrageous Gran — plus Akiya Henry and Adam Gillen voicing Dave’s friends.

The series follows Dave Spud and his family and friends as they enjoy the ordinary things in life, but it’s never long before the world starts to misbehave. The new series will see their world explored further and open up new adventures.

“We have really appreciated the support from ITV for the series and it has been exciting seeing the success the first series has had for CITV and kids up and down the country,” said producer Iain Harvey. “We cannot wait to share more escalating adventures of this Northern family.”

The Rubbish World of Dave Spud is an Illuminated Film Company production, commissioned for CITV by Paul Mortimer, Director of Digital Channels.

Emma Barnard, Commissioning Editor for the series, said, “The Rubbish World of Dave Spud is everything we look for in original programming for CITV and more. Wildly imaginative, funny, brilliantly produced and brought to life by the voices of a stellar line up of actors. We’re absolutely delighted to land a new series.”

CITV celebrated the commission with a special marathon of the full first season on the Victory in Europe (V-E) Day Bank Holiday on May 8.

International sales for The Rubbish World of Dave Spud are handled by Beta Film.

In other Spud-dates: The Illuminated Film Company has struck a book deal with Leicester-based indie publisher Sweet Cherry for U.K. and Australian publishing rights, introducing the diverse yet united family to the printed page.

“As I started out in publishing, it is fantastic to see the world of Dave Spud transformed from the screen to the book. We hope children (and not just children!) will be able to delve further into the many lives of the resourceful Spud family and friends,” said Harvey.

Sweet Cherry will publish an annual-format activity book that brings character profiles for the show’s resourceful main character and his chaotic array of comedy characters along with story spreads, silly pranks and fun games. An Official Guide to… The Rubbish World of Dave Spud will be published in August 2020 as a must-have holiday gift for fans of the show.

Neil Hardwick, Sweet Cherry’s Head of Design and Licensing, stated, “We are delighted to be adding the unlikely hero Dave Spud and his family to our publishing plan. Sweet Cherry values making reading fun for children and this license enables us to deliver its madcap adventures and silliness into our books.”

FOX Fall 2020 Brings More ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘Bless the Harts,’ ‘Duncanville’, ‘Simpsons’ & ‘Family Guy’; Brand-New Toons

Responding to real-time shifts in the marketplace, FOX, this season’s #1 network among Adults 18-49 and the only network to experience year-to-year growth in the demo and Total Viewers, is announcing its Fall 2020 schedule. The programming slate includes Season 4 of TV’s #1 series, The Masked Singer, new drama series Next and Filthy Rich, as well as all-new seasons of returning animated series The Simpsons (S32), Bless the Harts (S2), Bob’s Burgers (S11) and Family Guy (S19), along with Gordon Ramsay’s hit cooking competition series, Masterchef Junior. Also making its network television debut is police drama L.A.’s Finest, starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, along with the third installment of Cosmos, entitled Cosmos: Possible Worlds.

In midseason, original programming includes 9-1-1 and the #1 new drama 9-1-1: Lone Star; along with new comedy Call Me Kat, starring Mayim Bialik and executive-produced by Bialik and Jim Parsons; and new animated comedies The Great North and Housebroken. Also part of FOX’s 2020-2021 programming slate are all-new seasons of animated comedy Duncanville, starring and executive-produced by Amy Poehler; and Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen.

“The effects of this global health crisis leave no business unaffected. As a media company that prides itself on an entrepreneurial spirit and the focus that comes with doing fewer things better, we mobilized, swiftly creating an entirely new, original-programming lineup for the fall to share with our partners this upfront,” said Charlie Collier, CEO, FOX Ent. “In remote meetings with advertising and marketing partners over recent weeks, we sought to listen first and understand each partner’s unique concerns. Our primary goal is to help them back to business, so in turn, the message we’ve shared is one of relative stability on FOX, combining the best of primetime sports and entertainment with which to help our partners and their customers back to market.”

“Now more than ever, consistency, results and stability take on an all new emphasis,” said Marianne Gambelli, President, FOX Ad Sales. “FOX is primed and ready for the fall with a great deal of stability across our entire programming lineup, featuring premium content that continually resonates with viewers, and the necessary scale that builds demand and produces results. During these uncertain times, we remain focused on the individual business needs of our partners and will continue to work with them to develop custom solutions with our unmatched offerings of assets to help drive their businesses forward.”

The 2020-2021 season will see several milestones for FOX series, including the 350th episode of Family Guy and the 200th episode of Bob’s Burgers.

The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, The Simpsons exploded into popular culture in 1990 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognizable throughout the world. Homer (Dan Castellaneta), Marge (Julie Kavner), Bart (Nancy Cartwright), Lisa (Yeardley Smith) and Maggie are instantly identifiable TV icons. Rounding out this cast of characters are many beloved Springfield residents, including tavern proprietor Moe Szyslak (Hank Azaria) and nuclear power plant owner Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer). The Emmy, Annie and Peabody Award-winning animated comedy will begin its 32nd season this year.

Created and executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Emily Spivey, and featuring a voice cast of comedy all-stars, including Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell, Ike Barinholtz and Kumail Nanjani, animated comedy Bless the Harts follows the Harts, a Southern family that is always broke, and forever struggling to make ends meet. They one day hope to achieve the American dream, but they’re already rich – in friends, family and laughter.

Bob’s Burgers follows Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin) and his ever-quirky family who together run the restaurant Bob’s Burgers. In addition to its 2019 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Program, the series has been nominated in the same category in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, having won the award twice (2014 and in 2017). The series also recently was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and an Annie Award. In addition to Benjamin, Bob’s Burgers features the voices of John Roberts, Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Dan Mintz and Larry Murphy. Bento Box Entertainment serves as the program’s animation studio.

Family Guy continues to entertain its die-hard fan base with razor-sharp humor, spot-on parodies, spectacular animation and orchestra-backed original music. Since its debut in 1999, the series has reached cult status among fans, and its breakout star, a talking baby, has become one of the greatest TV characters of all time. Family Guy has racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, only the second animated series in television history to be honored with such a distinction. Most recently, series creator and lead voice actor Seth MacFarlane (voices of “Peter Griffin,” “Stewie Griffin,” “Brian Griffin” and “Glenn Quagmire”) won the 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. Cast member Alex Borstein (“Lois Griffin”) won the 2018 Emmy Award in the category; MacFarlane also was nominated that year. He won the 2017 and 2016 Emmy Award in the category, and was nominated from 2013 to 2015.

  • Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Popeye’ Movie Afloat with King Features

Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Popeye’ Movie Afloat with King Features

Animation icon Genndy Tartakovsky is teaming up with King Features to go back to the drawing board on his long-awaited Popeye animated feature, close sources have revealed to Animation Magazine. The Annie and Emmy award-winning, Golden Globe-nominated animation visionary directed Sony Pictures Animation’s hit Hotel Transylvania trilogy and created celebrated series Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack (both Cartoon Network), Primal (Adult Swim) and, in collaboration with Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Clone Wars (CN).

The film was originally announced for the Sony Pictures Animation slate in 2012, a few months ahead of the first Hotel Transylvania flick’s release and just before the studio set an overall deal with the helmer. An animation test for Tartakovsky’s “as artful and unrealistic as possible” CG interpretation of E.C. Segar’s classic character was revealed in 2014 (featuring the voices of Grey DeLisle and Tom Kenny). However, in a 2015 interview timed to the release of the HT2 trailer, the director revealed he was off the project, saying, “I was in love with what we were doing, but I think the studio is going through changes and I don’t know if they want to make the Popeye that I want to make.” Tartakovsky was set to move on to an original story, Can You Imagine? with SPA, but the project was canceled.

The studio later announced that writer T.J. Fixman (Ratchet & Clank) had been brought on to pen a new Popeye screenplay (a previous version had been written by The Smurfs scribes Jay Scherick and David Ronn).

Despite the spilled spinach over the first go at Popeye, Tartakovsky’s talent and the success of the Hotel Transylvania franchise spurred SPA to sign the director on for two original animated features in 2018, described as an R-rated comedy titled Fixed and an epic action-adventure à la Samurai Jack, called Black Knight.

Meanwhile, King Features has been making moves to bring some of its classic comics brands to new generations of fans with refreshed animated updates — as well as expanding acquired brands into the space. New 2D Popeye cartoons, Popeye’s Island Adventures, were launched on YouTube in 2018 to mark the character’s 90th anniversary. Last year, the company announced development of an animated series based on MDHR’s award-winning, retro toon-inspired game Cuphead

VIZ Picks Up New ‘Inuyasha’-Inspired Series ‘Yashahime’

A new feudal fairy tale begins!

The Inuyasha production team at SUNRISE have reunited to create the animation series Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, with Will Eisner Hall-of-Fame manga creator Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Ranma ½, Inuyasha) joining the team as main character design. VIZ Media has acquired rights to the digital streaming, EST and home video distribution of the new anime for North and Latin American territories.

In Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, the daughters of Sesshomaru and Inuyasha set out on a journey transcending time. Set in feudal Japan, half-demon twins Towa and Setsuna are separated from each other during a forest fire. While desperately searching for her younger sister, Towa wanders into a mysterious tunnel that sends her into present-day Japan, where she is found and raised by Kagome Higurashi’s brother, Sota, and his family.

Ten years later, the tunnel that connects the two eras has reopened, allowing Towa to be reunited with Setsuna, who is now a demon slayer working for Kohaku. But to Towa’s shock, Setsuna appears to have lost all memories of her older sister. Joined by Moroha, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome, the three young women travel between the two eras on an adventure to regain their missing past.

“The three heroines are beautifully designed. I am looking forward to their adventures,” said Takahashi, who designs the main characters.

Teruo Sato will direct, with Katsuyuki Sumisawa handling the screenplay, while Yoshihito Hishinuma is responsible for animation character design and Kaoru Wada composes the music. The animation production is by SUNRISE.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce the acquisition of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon. The Inuyasha universe has been a true pinnacle when it comes to delighting fans of all generations and we’re seeing that now, two decades later, with original Inuyasha episodes streaming on Netflix and Hulu. We’re excited for fans to revisit this magical world created by the iconic Rumiko Takahashi,” commented Brad Woods, CMO of VIZ Media.

The multi-million dollar grossing Inuyasha franchise first started as a critically acclaimed manga series which English version was featured regularly on The New York Times Bestsellers list throughout the 2000s. The anime adaptation aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block for over 11 years nearing 200 episodes. It has also spawned four successful feature film adaptations.

  • Tomek Popakul’s ‘Acid Rain’ Wins Grand Prix at ITFS Online Fest

Tomek Popakul’s ‘Acid Rain’ Wins Grand Prix at ITFS Online Fest

This year’s Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) was presented in a first-time digital edition true to the motto “Stay Animated – Go online with ITFS”, offering an entirely new and unusual Festival feeling to audiences and industry members: free live streams with new talks and film programs each day, a virtual GameZone, the VoD section OnlineFestival+ with more than 250 animated films including the almost complete competition programme 2020, and the OnlineFestival Pro section for professionals.

The demand for the programs, the personal feedback received and the exchange with viewers and the international animation community have exceeded expectations by far. The general public made intensive use of the online offers as did professional users such as distributors, world sales agencies, other festivals and filmmakers, who were given access to additional programmes during the Festival. Around 105,000 views in the live stream and in the OnlineFestival+ area have shown that the OnlineFestival.ITFS.de offer is well received. In addition, 4,000 votes were registered for the SWR OnlineFilm Audience Award. About 25% of the Professional Tickets OnlineFestival Pro are from abroad.

“We are overwhelmed by the great demand and the positive feedback on our OnlineFestival.ITFS.de received by users as well as filmmakers,” said Artistic Managing Director Ulrich Wegenast. “Despite the digital approach, a perhaps new kind of Festival flair has been created, particularly by the programs streamed live. We are particularly happy that this year people all over the world had the chance to see our great competition films and supporting programs. That was the way we could give honor to the filmmakers this year.”

“In this year of the coronavirus, we have been faced with many challenges which we have been able to overcome thanks to the support of our sponsors and partners as well as the encouragement from our fans,” noted Commercial Managing Director Dieter Krauss. “We will certainly integrate the experience and know-how gained in the planning of our upcoming Festivals, where hybrid formats will offer the opportunity to provide our fulfilment of public service with a broader perception on an even more international level, thus to reach significantly more people.”

The six-day festival culminated in the official Awards Ceremony streamed live on Sunday, May 10 across OnlineFestival.ITFS.de, Facebook and numerous partner websites. Winners accepted their Trickstar awards with video messages to viewers. Well-known TV host Markus Brock presented the ceremony again and welcomed studio guest Petra Olschowski (State Secretary in the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, Baden-Württemberg). Prizes were awarded in the various competitions: the Grand Prix which qualifies winners for the Oscars; Young Animation, Tricks for Kids and AniMovie for feature films; the German Animation Screenplay Award and the award for the screenplay with the greatest international market potential, the Trickstar Nature Award, the Animated Games Award Germany, SWR OnlineFilm Audience Award and the Trickstar Business Award.

The award winners are invited to attend the opening of the 28th ITFS on May 4, 2021 and receive their golden Trickstars in person. In addition, all entries to the competitions of ITFS 2020 will be shown on the big cinema screen at ITFS 2021 so that they still have the chance to experience the Festival feeling and for direct exchange with audiences.

GRAND PRIX (State of Baden-Württemberg and City of Stuttgart Grand Award for Animated Film 15,000 EUR) Acid Rain | Tomek Popakul | Animoon Studio (Piotr Szczepanowicz, Grzegorz Wacławek) Poland 2019

Jury statement: “In coming to decide the winner of this year’s Grand Prix, the short film jury were uniquely impressed by a film whose strength of vision was matched by the boldness of its execution. Through an immersive and radically modern style, this film perfectly illustrates a subculture with specific problems and challenges. It boasts a compelling and relatable story that takes on difficult themes around social engagement, personal demons and loss of control with empathy but without romanticism.

“An uncompromising work of art and a trip into the depths of a fluorescent, psychedelic world, the power of this film lies in its synthesis of impressive sound, aspects of rave culture and socio-political issues that are rarely in the spotlight. This film forcefully pulls us into a seemingly unending trip, boasting a strong female lead and astounding storytelling that takes our attention from the very beginning to its unexpected end.”

Jury statement: “In picking the winner of the Lotte Reiniger Promotion Award, the jury were drawn to a film about intimacy and amazement in an adults’ world. Drawing upon Japanese print traditions in the creation of its ethereal visuals, this film evokes the sense of wonder that accompanies a child’s inclusion into the daily rituals of society. With a keen sense of animation and solid direction, the audience can feel the emotions of the film through the rhythm of the bodies, colours and sounds.

“The film’s visuals are also matched by the richness and cultural identity of its musical score. In a very brief time the director successfully conveys a special atmosphere between mother and daughter in a shared, distinctly female moment.”

A fluffy dove then joined the fun
And so a friendship soon began
Therefore we send our special mention
To send them both to a new dimension!
“Thank you Michelle Chua, Aileen Dewhurst, Sharon Gabriella, Viktor Ivanovski, Sang Lee, Tyler Pacana, SiKyung Kevin Sung, Morgan Thompson, Chelsea van Tol, Matt Walton and Steven Wang for your film The Fox and the Pigeon.

“Choosing our winner was hard. The variety and quality of all films was breathtaking, but there is one film that truly stood out…

“We are more than the sum of our belongings. But these are the things that stay behind when a beloved person dies. New, truly unique stories form between all of the memoires. The floating spines of books, the stair lift to uncertainty and a stack of ID cards telling the story of a soldier’s life are only a few elements of this stop trick film giving us a very personal view of the death of the grandfather. We can hear his voice on the answering machine, delve deep into his life and are given a musical farewell. Jonas Hurrle’s film Fragmente is lovingly made and illustrates with apparently easy techniques a long life and its end. Congratulations on winning the FANtastic Award and welcome to the Stuttgart Animation Family!”

Special Mention: Terre de vers (Worms of Earth) | Helene Ducrocq | Citron Bien, Pierre Dron France 2019

Jury statement: “Multicolored and minimalistic design with a song that you won’t get out of your head anymore, the great performance of earthworms is told in the complex structure of nature. For this stirring, humorous and also serious homage to earthworms, we award Worms of Earth with the Trickstar Nature Special Mention.”

Le voyage du prince (The Prince’s Voyage)

AniMovie (best animated feature-length film) Le voyage du prince (The Prince’s Voyage) | Jean-François Laguionie, Xavier Picard | Blue Spirit Productions, Melusine Productions (Eric Jacquot, Armelle Glorennec, Stéphan Roelants) France 2019

Jury statement: “We had the honor as a jury from three different countries, far away from each other but virtually connected to review nine different movies from all over the world: France, Japan, Romania, India, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg and Mexico. It was a truly inspiring time to be able to watch so many fantastic animated movies – we enjoyed it very much. Today we want to announce the winner of best animated feature film and also award a special mention. And the winner is: The Prince’s Voyage, directed by Jean-François Laguionie and Xavier Picard. Produced by Eric Jacquot, Armelle Glorennec, Stéphan Roelants from France.

“It is a fantastic and philosophical fable story. It has an incredible contemporary touch, although it describes a very different time. It tells us to be without fear towards the outside or to things strange and unknown to us. It shows us that there are different ways to live a life, ways that shouldn’t be judged. It gently tells us to protect nature and our society – and last but not least to be careful with each other. The film is beautifully executed and animation and story complement each other excellent in a simple but beautiful presentation and we are sure that it will find a huge audience amongst all ages.”

Special Mention: L’Extraordinaire Voyage de Marona (Marona’s Fantastic Tale) | Anca Damian | Sacrebleu Productions, Marmitafilms, Aparte Film, Minds Meet (Anca Damian, Ron Dyens, Tomas Leyers) Romania, France, Belgium 2019

Jury statement: “Our special mention goes to Marona’s Fantastic Tale by female filmmaker and director Anca Damian from Romania. The film is produced by Anca herself, Ron Dyens and Thomas Layers from France and Belgium. The story about a dog’s life is an expressionistic, colorful and visual adventure about human life in its essence told through a dog’s point of view.

“It’s rare and daring animated originality deserves a special mention. The film is like an invitation to open doors to other dimensions. It lets us experience art in its fullest form. In its essence the film is a warm and touching story about love and belonging. It is rare to see such a daring execution in a feature film, never losing its red thread and always staying true to itself and therefore the film deserves a very special mention and conquered our hearts.”

Project: Good Enough: Burnout Diary | Studio Pupil, Tünde Vollenbroek (Produzentin/Producer), Dario van Vree (Filmemacher/Filmmaker), Niederlande/The Netherlands

Jury statement:Good enough: Burnout Diary addresses an issue of great social importance, affecting people from all social strata. The project by Tünde Vollenbroek and Dario van Vree started with a graphic novel, guiding readers through Maaike’s very personal story by means of her burnout diary. The jury particularly liked the 360-degree approach: In addition to a TV format, apps for persons affected by burnout are being planned as well as a social media campaign, workshops, and a special card game. The relaxed and easy narrative style and the pleasantly playful characterisation of the female protagonist are impressive. At the same time, the project conveys profundity and seriousness and provides comprehensible insight into the topic, which is helpful to those concerned too. Alongside the artistic work with its unique visual style, the jury has also been much impressed with the marketing strategies and revenue models.”

An exemplary business model.”

  • Amazon Adds ‘Ricky & Cricket’ to Animation Development Slate

Amazon Adds ‘Ricky & Cricket’ to Animation Development Slate

Amazon Studios is developing a new animated comedy series from Mr. Iglesias (Netflix) writing-producing duo Peter Murrieta and Isaac Gonzalez, and comedian Erik Rivera. Titled Ricky & Cricket, the concept centers on nice guy Ricky, a down-on-his-luck, Mexican-American actor who gets his act together with the help of his foul-mouthed guardian angel, Cricket, from the “east side of Heaven.”

The project is written by Murrieta, Gonzalez and Rivera, who also executive produce along with David Miner of 3 Arts.

Murrieta was the 2018 recipient of the Norman Lear Writer’s Award (Imagen Awards), and has shared two Emmy wins as showrunner of kids’ hit Wizards of Waverly Place. His co-EP credits also include One Day at a Time (Netflix) and Superior Donuts (CBS); Murrieta also created the autobiographical Greetings from Tucson (WB) and started out as a member of The Second City comedy crew in Chicago.

Gonzalez is a Mexican-American comedy writer who just wrapped up on the second season of Cartoon Network’s folklore-inspired animation Victor & Valentino. His animation writing credits also include adult-targeted series Seth MacFarlane’s Bordertown (Fox) and Legends of Chamberlain Heights (Comedy Central), as well as live-action comedy hit Community (NBC).

Rivera recently starred in his own one-hour HBO stand-up special Super White. He has had guest starred on Superior Donuts and My Name Is Earl (NBC) and appeared on Last Comic Standing and The Tonight Show (both NBC).

WIA & Animation Guild Join Forces to Support Caregivers

Women in Animation (WIA) and The Animation Guild (TAG) are joining forces to encourage equality and flexibility in their industries and to support the animation community as it navigates the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With many animation workers pulling double duty, balancing full-time work and caregiving without the usual support, the WIA-TAG collaboration is designed to raise awareness of the great need for caregiver support. This collaboration hopes to address how best to support caregivers as they re-enter the workplace, identify best practices and policies, and champion a cultural shift in the workplace to improve work/life balance.

“The combined membership of Women in Animation and The Animation Guild encompasses thousands of professionals across our industry. When we speak in a unified voice in support of working caregivers, it makes an impact. As we celebrate our working moms this weekend, we recognize their many vital and creative roles, and we commit to supporting them during COVID and beyond,” said Kristin Donner, Chair of The Animation Guild Family And Membership Committee.

Beginning on Mother’s Day, a series of social media posts will cover important topics that relate to issues facing working caregivers. The first, an infographic titled “How to Support Working Mothers During COVID” (shared below) references helpful resources and creative tips.

WIA and TAG believe this partnership will give a unified voice to working caregivers and empower the animation community to build a better industry — one that is more inclusive and more resilient than ever before.

  • Animated People: How Veronica Falconieri Hays Melds Art and Medicine

Animated People: How Veronica Falconieri Hays Melds Art and Medicine

Last month, biomedical illustrator and animator Veronica Falconieri Hays offered a special presentation during Maxon’s virtual NAB show, discussing her use of Cinema 4D for cellular and molecular visualizations for clients in research, biotech and pharma. On her site, https://falconierivisuals.com, you can see a “visual explainer of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein for medical illustrators.” We recently talked to her to find out more about the fascinating field of medical animation and the opportunities this field offers those interested in combining their love for animation with science and medicine.

    Veronica Falconieri
    Veronica Falconieri

Animation Magazine: Can you tell us briefly about your interest in animation and how you got into the field of medical animation?

Veronica: I have always loved both science and art, and was lucky enough to learn in high school that there was a career path that involves both. I studied biology and art as an undergraduate, and then earned my MA in medical illustration from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Like many medical illustrators, animation is part of the work that I do, especially when visualizing the tiny side of biology that is hard to see — cells, molecules and viruses.

What are some of the animation tools you typically use for your work?

I primarily use Maxon Cinema 4D (with the Embedded Python Molecular View [ePMV] plugin) and Adobe After Effects for my animation work.

    Veronica Falconieri
    Veronica Falconieri

Obviously, everyone is concerned about the COVID-19 virus these days. Can you tell us your involvement in visualizing the spike protein? How long did it take to create? What were your specific challenges for this project?

I created the illustration “SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein: Structure and Pre-fusion Processing” for my medical illustration and animation colleagues in the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI). The science on SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is complex and rapidly updating as researchers race to understand it. My colleagues at the AMI started a wiki-like reference document so we could share our research. I found it helpful, and wanted to contribute my own expertise to help my peers. Since I have extensive experience working with 3D molecular structures, I decided to visually summarize recent science on the spike protein.

Though I intended to just make a rough reference sketch, feature-creep kicked in and the piece became an entire infographic. It took 27 hours to create, with at least half of that time being research.

The research was particularly challenging in this case because so much of the science on SARS-CoV-2 is still new, and there are many open questions. When I was figuring out what the whole virus actually looks like, for example, I had to reference studies of SARS-CoV, the close cousin of SARS-CoV-2 that caused an outbreak in 2003.

“SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein: Structure and Pre-fusion Processing”
“SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein: Structure and Pre-fusion Processing”

What are the most rewarding aspects of creating medical illustrations/animations like these?

Any one animation or illustration reflects the work of countless scientists working countless hours to learn more about how biology works. Through visualization, I can bring that research to life. This enables clear scientific storytelling by many people: researchers, companies developing new medicines, publications translating science to broader audiences, and more. Scientists also often find it helps them to think about their research more effectively and in new ways.

How has the improvement of technology impacted your work since you graduated from college?

I started animating in graduate school in 2013. Since then, the continued development of GPU renderers like Redshift has expanded the range of render styles that I use. Cinema 4D’s volume modeling tools have also been an absolute game changer for creating many organic structures.

Although many animation students aspire to work in entertainment, few realize that working in medical animation can be a lucrative and rewarding career … What kind of advice would you give students who wouldn’t automatically consider the medical animation field?

If you like both science and art, medical animation could be a great fit for you. You definitely need a solid foundation in biology and medicine to be able to create accurate medical animation, or you need to work with a team that has that skillset. If you’re interested in building your own expertise, explore what biology courses might be available to you. The Association of Medical Illustrators (which includes medical animators) has great information on common ways to enter the field on their website (https://ami.org/medical-illustration/enter-the-profession).
