  • The Original ‘Animaniacs’ Toonsmith: Randy Rogel

***This article originally ran in the January ‘20 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 296)***

Go ahead – go to YouTube and type in a search for “Yakko’s World but.” You’ll find yourself in an endless slew of fan remixes. Add up the individual views of each video, and it’s possible that “Yakko’s World” is the most replayed song online. But I can’t be certain — I have been scrolling down the list of remixes since I started writing this article, and I have yet to reach the bottom.

The original “Yakko’s World,” a brief musical clip that originally aired in 1993 during the first season of Animaniacs, lists all the nations of world in rhyming verse. It was written by Randy Rogel, who went on to pen most of the songs for Animaniacs (and the follow-up series, Histeria!). We all know that Animaniacs, which aired its final episode in 1998, is being rebooted with original episodes on Hulu (stay tuned for summer 2020). What many fans may not know is that, along with original voice actors Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche (Yakko /Pinky, Wakko, Dot, and the Brain, respectively), Randy Rogel has also been tapped to help pen several new tunes. Like before, some songs are a classroom educator’s dream, while others are character-specific.

Other veteran composers include Julie and Steve Bernstein, protégés of the original show’s music director, the late Richard Stone. They’re in good hands with show-runner Wellesley Wild, previously a writer and producer for Family Guy.

    Animaniacs
    Animaniacs

But Rogel’s route to showbiz is more circuitous than most. He was born in San Diego, California in 1954 and broke into local theater at a young age. Before he graduated high school, he had performed myriad professional shows at venerable venues like The Old Globe and Circle Arts Theatre. These hosted national tours starring television stars of the day, including traveling productions of Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows, Borscht Belt comedian Jan Murray, and Bob Hope contemporary Marilyn Maxwell. The impact was undeniable. “I got my training and my exposure to great material of the old classic Broadway style, which is now the style I write in,” says Rogel.

He then decided to put theater on hold. “For some reason that I can’t explain, the military academies appealed to me.” His application was accepted to both West Point and the Air Force academy. “I chose West Point because it seemed the more prestigious to me. I left musical theater to pursue an education and to see the world as a military officer.” Rogel had no misgivings about West Point. Each year the senior class writes and performs a campus musical called The Hundreth Night Show. Rogel wrote the show for his class. “It was a resounding success and I thought, hey, maybe I’m good at this writing thing,” he says.

    An Officer and a Thespian

Rogel was among West Point’s graduating class of 1976, the cohort which produced more appointed U.S. generals — the officers who led the charges into Iraq and Afghanistan — than any other in American history. Following graduation, Rogel was posted to Italy as a field artillery officer in the combat arms. “I did my graduate work while I was in Europe and took a degree in International Relations — basically political science — from Boston University. Including West Point, that gave me a total of 10 years of military service.” When he graduated, he went corporate. “Corporations love junior military officers because they all know about chain-of-command and lines-of-communication, and we weren’t used to working for a lot of money. Procter & Gamble hired me and moved me to Seattle.”

There he was working in sales, but he also started auditioning. “I was cast pretty quickly in several shows and I soon began working non-stop as an actor; it started getting in the way of my regular job.” Soon Rogel asked himself, “Twenty years from now, what will I want to have done with my life? I knew that I wanted to work in film and television.” Rogel had already earned a couple promotions before he quit, drove to L.A., slept on a friend’s couch, and auditioned while submitting writing samples. He landed a job at Warner Bros. in early 1991 writing for the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series.

Under the guidance of showrunner Alan Burnett, the series was an instant hit. Down the hall, Steven Spielberg’s team led by executive producer Tom Ruegger was wrapping up Tiny Toon Adventures and developing Animaniacs. Rogel told them that he should work on the new Animaniacs show. “They told me, ‘No, you write that dark sh*t, and Animaniacs is a comedy!’”

Rogel’s mother had bought his young son a globe for his birthday. “I sat with him, showing him the countries of the world — here’s the United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama — when it occurred to me that this might make an interesting song. When I was auditioning to write for Animaniacs, I thought that song about all the countries might be fun for the show, so I submitted it to Tom Ruegger. He liked it and showed it to Steven Spielberg. He liked it and they had me write another one listing all the states and their capitals. They liked that one, too, and next asked me to write a song about the entire universe. I thought, ‘Jeez guys, we can do more than list songs,’ so I began to write other songs like ‘I’m Mad’, ‘Variety Speak’, ‘I’m Cute’, et cetera.”

Randy Rogel illustrated by Alan Bodner
Randy Rogel illustrated by Alan Bodner

So how does he go about crafting a song? “I try to ask myself, ‘What’s the heart of the song?’” Rogel explains. “And that basically gives you a hook. That hook begins to suggest a rhythm to me, and then I go down that track. Maybe it will begin to suggest the beginning of a melody. At that time, I probably have lots and lots of lyrics in my head as I’m writing down little clever things. I go back and forth between the rhythm and the melody, and I ask myself, is this funny? Is this a good piece of work? You have to be brutally honest with yourself, because if it doesn’t work for you, it’s definitely not going to work for anybody else.”

He uses familiar, public domain melodies for informational songs, and original melodies for the others. After all, it’s far more clever to fit the list of the U.S. presidents into the well-known measures of the “William Tell Overture” than to write a melody around the list. Sometimes, though, he makes exceptions. One of his songs for Animaniacs about the deadly earthquake of 1994 was put to Schumann’s The Merry Farmer — just for ironic contrast.

    Winning Formula

Occasionally there was push-back from network execs. “They said, ‘These songs will be over the kids’ heads, and we should be writing more like Barney,’” recalls Rogel. “I remember saying, ‘No, no, kids are a lot smarter than you think they are, and we should write up to them.’ Tom Ruegger and certainly Stephen Spielberg really supported that idea.” Combine that with the timeless influence of golden age Broadway, and you have a show with a soundtrack that never grows old.

Rogel went on to win three Emmys (10 nominations): two for his work on Animaniacs and another primetime Emmy for his writing on Batman. He has also won two Annie Awards: one for the Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero and one for his music on Histeria! He received a Peabody Award for his work on Animaniacs. In addition to writing and composing, he continued performing – Rogel has played Cosmo in 26 different productions of Singing in the Rain. He continues to work in animation, and has written for a wide variety of shows, including Disney’s The 7D, The 99, 1001 Nights and, most recently, Big Bad Boo’s acclaimed Hulu show The Bravest Knight.

For the last few years, Rogel has also been touring with Rob Paulsen in a show aptly titled Animaniacs in Concert, performing songs from his cartoon oeuvre. It’s not to be missed (this writer has seen it three times and counting). He is currently balancing all that with the development of an original off-Broadway stage musical.

But the real question is—what does Rogel think of the countless remixes of “Yakko’s World”? He responds, “I’m blown away, especially by the one that uses clips from different movies. That one deserves an Emmy of its own.”

Jake S. Friedman is New York-based author, teacher and artist. His book on the Disney Afternoon cartoons will be released in 2020. You can find out more at JakeSFriedman.com.

“We always try to be a little different. I think it’s our strength and maybe even some would consider it our weakness because our films are so different from each other. We will do a movie like How to Train Your Dragon — it’s more live action-y, it has a little bit more of a realistic feel and it’s almost like a great VFX movie in a lot of ways. Then, we release The Boss Baby after that, which is almost like a Warner Bros. cartoon. Some people probably don’t realize that the same studio made both of these films because they are so wildly different from one each other; I love that we do that.” — Sean Sexton, Head of Character Animation, DreamWorks Animation

France’s Miyu Productions has signed on as a producer on traditionally animated 2D feature film Chicken for Linda!, the new project from filmmaking power couple Chiara Malta (Simple Women) and Sébastien Laudenbach (The Girl without Hands).

The film, which attracted much attention at this year’s Cartoon Movie with its colorful, pastel-sketch style, is co-produced by Dolce Vita Films (Italy) and supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region (France). Gebeka is on board to distribute.

Chicken for Linda! is a comedy romp for family audiences, in which a parental scolding leads to some unusual twists. Feeling she’s been too harsh on her daughter, Linda’s mother promises to cook her chicken and peppers. Even though Mom can hardly cook, there’s a bigger problem: Where can she buy a chicken on a strike day, when all the shops are closed? What follows is a funny and frenetic mission to find (and keep hold of) a chicken for Linda.

Laudenbach made a splash on the global animation scene with his debut feature, the dark hand-painted fairy tale The Girl without Hands (La Jeune Fille sans mains) in 2016, which he wrote, directed, edited and animated entirely on his own. The Brothers Grimm tale earned a Cannes Film Festival premiere in the ACID program as well as a Jury Distinction from the Annecy animation festival. The film received a North American release through GKIDS in 2017/2018 and is available on Blu-ray from Shout! Factory.

Miyu’s feature film slate includes digital 2D feature Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, a drama adapted from the writings of Haruki Murakami (in production); Mirai Mizue’s Journey to the West, a psychedelic digital 2D co-pro with Japanese studio New Deer; and Domenica from Ugo Bienvenu and Kevin Manach, a digital 2D drama inspired by the true events surrounding one of the most famous modern art collections of the 20th century.

Aardman Debuts Teaser for Animated Coldplay Video ‘Daddy’

Multi-award-winning animation studio Aardman has announced its new music video for Coldplay’s “Daddy,” with the release of a teaser across social media. The track is off the band’s new album, Everyday Life, available now to stream and purchase.

The film Aardman has created for the track is an atmospheric journey through a girl’s fragmented memory about her father. Directed by Aardman’s Asa Lucander, it uses live-action puppetry, digitally painted sets and 2D animation to create a tapestry of styles that symbolizes the girl’s memories of her dad.

“It was such an honor to direct this video for Coldplay. The first time I listened to the track it spoke to me on a deep level – I immediately started to imagine storylines and images formed in my mind’s eye,” said Lucander. “When this happens, you know you’re on to something very special. I’m often drawn to emotional stories and I knew very quickly that this was one I wanted to tell.”

“’Daddy’ isn’t a single in the traditional sense,” said Phil Harvey, Coldplay’s Creative Director, “but we always wanted to make a video for it as the song feels like a story within itself. Åsa and her team have done an incredible job in bringing the story to life.”

The full length, five-minute video follows a girl lost at sea, alone in a rowing boat and sailing towards the unknown. The turbulent sea is echoing glimpses of her past with her dad, and the sea and skyscape becoming the emotive canvas projecting the girl’s memories.

“I wanted to capture the nature of dreams and memories – a sense of a fragmented, surreal imagination,” Lucander added. “It is an emotional journey, and I guess you could read it in many ways. The sea becomes a metaphor for what stands between the girl and her father. A threat, a sense of danger of the unknown and what she has lost.”

Aardman has a history of making imaginative, powerful and compelling music videos, dating back to Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ in 1986. The video won nine MTV VMAs, including Video of the Year, which is the most awards a single video has won.

Grid VFX Brings ‘Latte’ Movie to Life with Blackmagic’s Fusion Studio

A new animated animal adventure is ready to delight young audiences in Europe this month, as Latte & The Magic Waterstone rolls out in major markets through Christmas and into the new year. The film follows plucky hedgehog Latte and unlikely partner Tjum the squirrel as they set out to retrieve the forest’s magic waterstone from the clutches of the despicable Bear King.

Latte and Tjum’s adventure exposes them to many marvels of nature — from auroras in the sky to luminescent flowers in the undergrowth — lit up by Grid VFX with the help of Blackmagic Design’s post-production compositing solution Fusion Studio.

    Latte & The Magic Waterstone
    Latte & The Magic Waterstone

Directed by Regina Welker, Latte & The Magic Waterstone involved the completion of more than 1,200 visual effects shots, including the complex compositing of background and foreground plates and CG render layers for 3D assets, lighting, procedural effects, and more.

Latte was a huge project for us. It’s a feature animation with a limited budget, so we knew we had to work as efficiently as possible,” said Laurens Bekaert, compositing supervisor at Grid. “Fusion’s GPU accelerated render engine was amazing at being able to handle geometry and 3D space compared to alternative compositors. We could add smoke and particles behind our characters and see a good representation of how they would look in 3D instantly, without needing to re-render.”

    Latte & The Magic Waterstone
    Latte & The Magic Waterstone

Using Fusion in conjunction with Grid’s in-house pipeline management system, Gclus, the team built several node trees to act as containers for a base look for all the film’s sequences. CG supervisor Chara Sottou could then set the mood for each scene, including specifying elements such as caustic effects, depth haze, depth grading, volumetrics, digital matte painting spherical projections, motion blur and depth of field.

There were also motion vector tools to allow for the motion blur to be added in post, UV tools to reposition and remap textures, and finally relighting tools that could modify the normals, ambient occlusion and position passes to allow for atmosphere and grading adjustments throughout the compositing process.

    Latte & The Magic Waterstone
    Latte & The Magic Waterstone

“Being able to modify so much of our final render in Fusion, without the need for round tripping, was crucial in allowing us to complete this project on time and on budget,” noted Sottou. “We were able to manually adjust depth of field, stylistically blurring certain areas of the frame to our advantage to guide viewers’ eyes to the action we wanted them to focus on.”

The team were also able to add effects such as glow to key scenes, enhancing the feeling of magical realism the story required. All with less than 10 compositors instead of 50 or more.

“I think it’s really important to show that this level of production quality and creativity can come from a small team in the European animation industry,” Sottou concluded. “There’s this hesitancy with big productions, because they’re worried that the budget won’t allow for quality. With tools such as Fusion now becoming more accessible to artists, that’s changing.”

Latte & The Magic Waterstone will be in cinemas in France starting December 11 and in Germany from December 25, with further release dates across Europe in 2020.

  • Paul McCartney’s ‘High in the Clouds’ Soars as Netflix-Gaumont Movie

Paul McCartney’s ‘High in the Clouds’ Soars as Netflix-Gaumont Movie

Netflix and Gaumont are producing a new animated feature film from iconic songwriter, author and filmmaker Paul McCartney, titled High in the Clouds. Based on the popular children’s adventure novel of the same title by McCartney and Philip Ardagh and illustrated by Geoff Dunbar (who collaborated with McCartney on the 1985 animated short Rupert and the Frog), the project is being directed by Oscar nominated animator Timothy Reckart (Head Over Heels, The Star) from a screenplay by Jon Croker (Paddington 1 & 2, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

The movie follows an imaginative teenage squirrel named Wirral, who finds himself mixed up with a bunch of teenage ruffian rebels who live high in the clouds, after he accidentally antagonizes Gretsch the owl — the gang’s tyrannical leader (and a fabulous singer) who steals the voice of anyone who upstages her.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Netflix. They complement what is already an amazing team with Gaumont and we can think of no-one better to be working with to bring our film to a global audience. I’ve always loved animated films and this is a hugely important passion project for me. I can’t wait for the world to see it,” said McCartney.

An Academy Award and 18-time Grammy Award winner, McCartney (Let It Be, Live and Let Die, Vanilla Sky) is creator, producer and the crafter of original songs and music for the new animated movie. Bob Shaye (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Golden Compass), the late Michael Lynne, Sidonie Dumas, Christophe Riandee, Nicolas Atlan and Terry Kalagian (Gaumont) are also producers.

“The development of High in the Clouds has been a fantastic journey working together with Tim and Jon and of course my amazing Gaumont Animation and Family team, Terry Kalagian and Alex Soto,” Gaumont Animation President Nicolas Atlan commented. “We feel fortunate as this has been an extremely collaborative creative process with the incomparable Paul McCartney and his team, including Lee Eastman who has offered invaluable guidance throughout the development stage. We at Gaumont are elated to be announcing this project and are excited to be working with Melissa Cobb, Gregg Taylor and the talented team at Netflix to be able to share this truly special musical animated feature film with audiences around the world.”

“Bringing the world a new animated film from the heart and mind of the brilliant Paul McCartney is undoubtedly one of the greatest thrills we’ve experienced at Netflix. We’re beyond grateful to be partnering with Nicolas and the Gaumont team on High in the Clouds and with Tim at the helm, this whimsical story celebrating individuality and the unifying power of music is in great hands,” said Gregg Taylor, Netflix Director of Original Animated Films.

High in the Clouds is a passion project for McCartney, who has been developing the concept with French studio Gaumont since 2009. In 2013, it was announced that a feature film was in the works at RGH Entertainment and Unique Features, with producers Michael Lynne and Bob Shaye. The ecologically themed project about the squirrel and pals seeking a fabled animal sanctuary was to be helmed by Tony Bancroft (Mulan). Croker was announced as replacing writer Josh Klausner (Shrek Forever After) last year.

  • Toys on the Shelf: STX’s ‘Playmobil’ Opens at Just $668K

Toys on the Shelf: STX’s ‘Playmobil’ Opens at Just $668K

Despite being based on a popular toy line and boasting star powered voice cast, Playmobil: The Movie finally made its Stateside debut with a fizzling box-office reception. Opening in 2,337 theaters across North America this weekend, the picture managed to pull in just $668,000 — the third-lowest opening for a film playing in over 2,000 locations behind CG animated indie Delgo (2008, $511.9K) and edutainment series spinoff The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012, $443.9K).

The $75 million picture was co-financed by Wild Bunch, Pathe, Dimitri Rassam and ON Animation.

Playmobil was released in North America by STX Entertainment (UglyDolls), which inherited the film from Open Road after it folded and has repeatedly pushed the regional premiere back after its lukewarm reception in Europe. While marketing costs were reportedly kept low at $3 million, STX is experimenting with variable ticket pricing as a way to attract audiences, with theater chains and venues selling admission for just $5.

“Both STX and exhibition believed [the variable pricing model] would not only provide grosses, but also incremental growth,” STX President of Domestic Distribution Kevin Grayson told Variety. “Since this is the first time this progressive strategy was put in play on a wide release opening weekend, there were always going to be some bumps along the way. That said, we have already learned from this experiment. And we will continue to learn more and will tweak it for the future so it can be the benefit to the industry that we know it can be.”

Playmobil: The Movie was directed by Disney animation veteran Lino DiSalvo, and based on the hugely popular line of German toys. The story follows a young woman named Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) who embarks on a magical quest when her younger brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) disappears into the multi-dimensional world of Playmobil characters (voiced by the likes of Daniel Radclifffe, Jim Gaffigan, Meghan Trainor, Adam Lambert and Kenan Thompson).

The film had a $12.5 million international release in August, and is supposed to open in China, though no date has been set. A bleak critical reception has left Playmobil with an unfriendly 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • ‘Star Trek DS9’ Star and Voice Actor René Auberjonois Dies Age 79

‘Star Trek DS9’ Star and Voice Actor René Auberjonois Dies Age 79

René Auberjonois, known to sci-fi fans around the world as security chief Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and to animation lovers as the French chef in Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989) among his prolific list of stage, screen and voice over credits, died Sunday at the age of 79. The two-time Emmy nominated actor passed at his home in Los Angeles due to metastatic lung cancer, his son Rèmy-Luc told the Associated Press.

Born in New York in 1940, Auberjonois move to Paris with his family after World War II, where he discovered a love for performing as a young child in a school play. The family then moved to an artist’s colony in upstate New York — where the neighbors included actor Helen Hayes and Burgess Meredith — and Auberjonois got his first theater job as an apprentice at 16.

The aspiring star graduated from what is now Carnegie Mellon, traveling around the country for theater gigs, eventually landing three Broadway roles in 1968. Auberjonois won a Tony award for starring opposite Katherine Hepburn in Coco Chanel musical Coco the following year. He was later Tony nominated for The Good Doctor, Big River and City of Angels.

In 1970, Auberjonois embodied one of his most iconic roles, as military chaplain Father Mulcahy in MASH. The rest of the decade saw many guest starring turns on television, before he joined the cast of Benson in its second season in 1980, playing the governor’s highbrow household chief of staff Clayton Runnymede Endicott III, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Auberjonois played the shape-shifter Odo on Deep Space Nine from 1993-1998 and was a regular convention guest, where he used his popularity to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. He was also a regular on Boston Legal from 2004-2008 as Paul Lewiston and on Judging Amy from 2001-2002 as Judge Keeler.

Pre-Mermaid, Auberjonois provided voices for cartoons like The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, Challenge of the GoBots, The Super Powers Team, Johnny Quest, Snorks, The Smurfs Christmas Special and The Last Unicorn. Through the ‘90s, he lent his distinctive voice to Darkwing Duck, Batman: The Animated Series, The Pirates of Darkwater, the Aladdin series, Richie Rich and Warner Bros.’ Cats Don’t Dance.

Auberjonois reprised the role of Chef Louis for the direct-to-video sequel The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea in 2000, as well as recording for series like The Legend of Tarzan, Justice League, Xiaolin Showdown, Xyber 9: New Dawn and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the English dub of The Cat Returns. In more recent years, he played multiple characters for Ben 10: Omniverse, the new Pound Puppies and Archer, as well playing Pepe Le Pew for The Looney Tunes Show and guest roles for Young Justice, Wander Over Yonder and Winx Club: Beyond Believix. The prolific actor also provided voices for many video games over the last two decades, including for popular franchises Skylanders, Uncharted, Fallout and, of course, Star Trek.

Throughout the season, the series will explore the everyday life and hijinks of two best friends whose optimism and enthusiasm turn any situation from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether making an epic quest down the street to mail a letter, heroically saving the local playground with a bake sale, or simply getting a haircut, Pony and Annie always stick together because life is better as a pair.

Created by Ant Blades, It’s Pony is inspired by a short from Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program. A pre-released episode will be available starting Wednesday, Dec. 25 on the Nick App, Nick On Demand and YouTube.
