Pixar Animation Studios Releases RenderMan 23

Pixar has released RenderMan version 23, featuring next-level artist interactivity, enhanced support for Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description), and first-class integration with SideFX’s recent release of Houdini 18 and its new Solaris features. This major release of RenderMan moves the entire platform to a new level to support the next wave of cutting edge animation and visual effects.

Version 23 improves the interactive artist experience on all content creation applications: Autodesk Maya, Foundry’s Katana and SideFX Houdini. Important technical advances boost performance, stability, and enable new kinds of integrations. New features in Pixar’s USD allow all pipelines to more easily access the full capabilities of RenderMan.

“Pixar artists have always had ambitious goals and our culture is to continuously evolve RenderMan, USD and our other technology to meet their needs,” said Steve May, CTO of Pixar Animation Studios. “RenderMan 23 and the newest USD release each open up new creative possibilities. Used together they add up to even greater production leverage and quality. As always, we are excited to share these advancements with other studios across the film industry.”

RenderMan version 23 also delivers support for Houdini 18, recently released by SideFX, including its native USD Solaris tools that enable powerful new lookdev, layout and lighting workflows. Solaris artists have direct creative control of USD features and through USD’s Hydra they can immediately access the power of RenderMan. The core RenderMan for Houdini plugin has also been updated and extended for Houdini 18 to support the features in RenderMan version 23.

“The SideFX team is thrilled about our new Solaris platform in Houdini 18 and its integration with Pixar tools,” commented Cristin Barghiel, VP Product Development, SideFX. “ Solaris delivers entirely new artistic possibilities for look-dev, layout, and lighting with a core based on Pixar’s production-savvy USD technology. RenderMan 23 reflects another facet of our collaboration with Pixar, providing a remarkable interactive path traced experience to Houdini 18 artists.”

This release also includes updates to system and library foundations to match the Visual Effects Reference Platform 2018, delivering state-of-the-art rendering technology to studios that are taking advantage of the latest hardware and content creation frameworks.

“Over the past year and a half at Blue Sky Studios we have completely rebuilt and modernized our entire production pipeline with RenderMan, Houdini and USD playing critical foundational roles,” said Andrew Beddini, Blue Sky’s Image Pipeline Technical Supervisor.” Each of these pieces of technology are industry-leading in their own right, but together they have offered us creative opportunities and efficiency gains we wouldn’t have dreamed of even just a few years ago. As we begin our first feature film using these tools, we’re truly excited for what the future holds and for our continued partnership with the teams at Pixar and SideFX.”

  • Marvel ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ Toon Held Up by Writers’ Split

Marvel ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ Toon Held Up by Writers’ Split

One of the planned four adult animated series inspired by Marvel Comics for Hulu has hit a creative speed bump. According to Hollywood Reporter, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show — the sole female-led project in the quartet — is on hold as showrunner Erica Rivinoja and the entire writing team have been let go due to creative differences with Marvel.

Rivinoja is a writer and producer who has shared two Emmy wins for Outstanding Animated Program and two additional nominations in the category for South Park. Her adult animation credits also include MTV’s Clone High and the single-season TBS sitcom Neighbors From Hell. For family feature audiences, Rivinoja has story credits on MGM’s recent The Addams Family, DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls and Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (also screenplay).

Reportedly, Rivinoja and her team had completed multiple scripts and additional outlines, while others were 15 weeks into a 20-week production cycle. All this work has been thrown out pending the appointment of a new showrunner and their team selection. Sources aver that Marvel and Hulu are still determined to bring Tigra & Dazzler to screen.

Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show is a story about two woke superheroes and best friends, Tigra and Dazzler, as they fight for recognition among powered people who make up the eight million stories in Los Angeles. Chelsea Handler, who will also voice one of the lead roles, is an executive producer along with Jeph Loeb.

The show was set to follow the first two Marvel-Hulu series, M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey — which remain on track — and precede Howard the Duck, with all four distinct animated worlds colliding in a one-off special, The Offenders.

  • Antitrust Complaint Over ‘Frozen II’ Screen “Monopoly” in S. Korea

Antitrust Complaint Over ‘Frozen II’ Screen “Monopoly” in S. Korea

Disney is encountering some heat over the release of Frozen II in South Korea. A local civic group has filed a complaint against the studio, claiming that the blockbuster sequel violated national antitrust laws by playing on 88 percent of movie screens in the country. The film opened November 23 and has earned $61.2 million in S. Korea, making it Frozen II’s third largest market behind NorAm ($287.6M) and China ($90.5M).

Seoul-based NGO the Public Welfare Committee filed the complaint with the Central District Prosecutor’s Office, asking for an inquiry into Walt Disney Korea’s alleged domestic movie market monopoly. PWC is arguing that Frozen II’s opening across such a large proportion of the nation’s screens violates a clause in South Korea’s antitrust act that defines a company with more than 50 percent of market share as a “market-dominant enterprise.”

The current law in S. Korea about theatrical film engagements does not cap the percentage of screens playing the same picture, however the recent cinema dominance of Disney imports and blockbusters from the major Korean studios has stirred up debate about the issue. Culture Minister Park Yang-woo promised to consider a screen quota system for domestic movies, while National Assembly Representative Woo Sang-ho backs a pending bill that caps the screen occupancy of any film showing at a multiplex at 50 percent between the hours of 1 p.m. and 11 p.m.

PWC and other film industry groups calculate screen share using the percentage of screens showing a particular film at least once on a given day. Other monitors, including the Korean Film Council, divides the total number of times a specific film is shown by the total number of film screenings that day — KOFIC puts Frozen II’s share at 46.3 percent using this metric, rather than PWC’s 88 percent.

  • George Takei Joins Scary Good Cast for ‘Love Monster’ Series

George Takei Joins Scary Good Cast for ‘Love Monster’ Series

Screen legend George Takei has joined some of the finest actors and voiceover talents in the U.K. for Love Monster, a new 54 x 7’ 2D-animated series from BBC Children’s, Boat Rocker Studios and UYoung. Based on the award-winning books by British author-illustrator Rachel Bright (HarperCollins Children’s), the show is set to debut on CBeebies in January.

The voice cast features George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes) as Elder Panda, narrator Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner, Episodes, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Javone Prince (The Javone Prince Show, PhoneShop) as Bad Idea Puppy, Sarah Hadland (Miranda, The Job Lot, Bob the Builder) as Tiniest Fluffiest Bunny, Lewis Macleod (Dead Ringers, Newzoids, Postman Pat) as Elder Kitten/Dr. G. Piggles, Freya Parker (The Mash Report, Lovesick) as the In-Chicks/Delivery Duckling and Emma Maclennan (Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil) as Book Cub, while actor, comedian and beatbox artist Darren Foreman uses his incredible vocal skills to bring the titular Love Monster to life.

“Love Monster is a fantastically engaging character who has been great fun to play. He may look a little bit odd but his heart is in the right place, and when he’s brave enough to follow it, he realises that he can always rely on the help of his friends,” said Foreman.

Showcasing the importance of kindness, empathy, connection and instinct, the wonderfully warm and witty adventures follow hairy hero Love Monster, as he navigates the challenges of being the only monster in Fluffytown – a world of cute baby animals. With a lot of help from his friends, Love Monster learns to follow his heart rather than his slightly “over-thinky” head, as he searches for the right thing to do.

Love Monster celebrates inclusive behavior and collaboration and that’s also very much my philosophy – we find strength, joy and vitality in diversity coming together,” said Takei. “I never imagined myself being a panda but I’ve always enjoyed seeing them, especially the young cubs because they’re so cute! Elder Panda is just an older version of them and is still whimsical, fun-loving and life embracing – I suppose it’s a reflection of my standing in human life!”

Greig, the show’s narrator, said, “Love Monster has a wonderful warmth and empathy to it. The series shows that by embracing our differences and helping each other, we can make things better for everyone, a particularly valuable lesson for children in today’s world.”

A ground-breaking collaboration between BBC Children’s in-house Productions, Boat Rocker Studios and Chinese production company UYoung, Love Monster is exec produced by Tony Reed for the BBC, Chapman Maddox for Boat Rocker and James Chen Gu for UYoung. Animation for the series is being produced in the U.K. by Karrot Animation and A Productions, with a proportion of pre-production on scripts, storyboards and design provided by UYoung’s studio in China.

“We’re thrilled to have such a wonderful cast bringing the residents of Fluffytown to life with such wit and warmth. They lend the perfect balance of comedy and compassion to Love Monster’s colorful and funny adventures,” said Reed, Genre Lead for BBC Children’s Animation & Puppetry. “These characters are funny, diverse and inclusive — all the values CBeebies holds dear to its heart.”

Bob Higgins, EVP Content, Kids & Family, Boat Rocker Studios, said, “We are really excited to have such a stellar cast on board. They are the perfect ensemble to bring Fluffytown’s menagerie of inhabitants to life. They bring a wonderful mix of silliness, surprise and sophistication to every episode.”

Boat Rocker Studios will distribute Love Monster and manage the global brand and licensing excluding China and Southeast Asia, which will be managed by UYoung. Boat Rocker Studios is currently targeting leading licensees across a range of products/categories.

‘Ne Zha’: Creating China’s Charming Demon Boy

***This article originally ran in the January ‘20 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 296)***

In a year full of the usual animated sequels — talking toys, adventurous princesses and friendly dragons — China’s Ne Zha has emerged one of the most unusual animated offerings. The beautifully crafted feature tells the intriguing story of a gifted young deity (Ne Zha) who is born from a heavenly pearl by the Lord of Heaven. However, since an ancient prophecy has predicted that he will bring about the destruction of the world, he is shunned as an outcast and has to make some major decisions to restore order among humans.

The film, which was released in China last summer, has earned over $728.99 million worldwide and became the country’s most popular animated movie of all time (Kung Fu Panda 3 holds the No. 2 spot!). In an exclusive email interview with Animag, the film’s director Yu Yang shares some of his thoughts and experiences on the making of this phenomenal movie.

“I was studying pharmacy (in Sichuan University), but I’d loved animation since childhood, so I started to learn 3D animation software and then switched to becoming an animator,” he tells us. “However, it was hard to make a living as an animator in China, because in the past, the quality of most Chinese animated features were pretty bad. Generally, audiences received Chinese animated movies poorly, so not many of them made much money. Very few investors were willing to put their money in animation, and most animation companies had gone bankrupt.”

    A Successful Career Change

Yang says he had to fend off people’s misunderstanding of his career change and he also had to continue surviving in this business. “It was a rough period,” he recalls. “But when Coloroom Pictures approached me with the proposal of investing in my animated feature, I quickly came up with the idea of a project that defies stereotypes and focuses on the twist of fate. I wanted to rely on the efforts of our domestic animators, to produce a top-notch animated movie and change people’s misconception towards Chinese animation.”

    Ne Zha

Yang and his team began working on the project in 2015 and delivered the movie in the summer of 2019. Development and pre-production took nearly two years, from script to conceptual design, and the actual production took nearly three years. The CG team relied on Autodesk Maya, Adobe and Nuke to produce the film’s well-crafted animation. In addition to Chengdu Coco Cartoon, Yang also invited over 70 animation studios to help out with the production of this film (bringing the overall number of the overall team to 1,600 plus).

When asked about his favorite part of the movie, Yang says he loved the part where Ne Zha grew four arms, holding up the iceberg and melting it by releasing flames from his body!

“This scene represented Ne Zha’s resistance against fate,” he explains “The iceberg symbolized the powerful force of fate as it was constantly pressing over everyone’s head. Ne Zha acquired his power from the love of his parents, that gave him the courage to confront fate. When the flame from his body finally melted the iceberg, he not only saved the lives of all the civilians, but he also eliminated people’s discrimination against him. It turned his fate from being the Devil to becoming God.”

    Experience Counts

Looking back at the ups and downs of producing this labor of love, the director says the biggest challenge was working in a “still incomplete system” within his country’s animation industry and finding ways to perfect his movie. “We lack screenwriting experience — this was my first time writing a movie script,” he explains. “We also lack directing experience (this was my first time directing a feature film), production managing experience, expert-level animators, and advanced technical support. Our entire production process is constantly going through trial and error; we are cultivating our domestic animation industry and developing our own production logistics, which is much harder to do compared to countries that have already developed their movie industry. When we were finally able to transform our vision to the big screen, our animation industry also gained a lot of valuable experience from this project.”

    Ne Zha
    Ne Zha

Yang says he feels very gratified to know that audiences have embraced the movie both in China and around the world. “My initial reaction was feeling very grateful because the efforts of so many animators are finally being recognized by the audience,” he says. “Then there was some unease, because I felt that this film still has a lot of flaws. I’m humbled by the praise from the audience, and I feel that I’m not confident enough to receive such high praise. Then, finally, comes the peace of mind, because I have to get past all of this in order to genuinely devote myself to creating my next project!”

Finally, he says that Ne Zha continues to be his biggest animation hero. “There’s a Ne Zha in everyone’s heart,” he notes. “That’s to help us break through barriers, defy stereotypes and make our dreams come true!”

Well Go USA distributed Ne Zha in select theaters in U.S. and Canada this fall.
