If you thought the Star Wars Holiday Special from the ’80s was a hoot, just wait until you see what the folks behind [adult swim]’s Robot Chicken do with some action figures and a little help from George Lucas himself. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. have teamed with Lucasfilm to create a TV special titled Robot Chicken: Star Wars.
Directed by Green, the 30-minute stop-motion special will spoof various scenes from the Star Wars films. George Lucas, who has been very supportive of the Star Wars fan-film culture, is reportedly lending his voice to his animated likeness. Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, is also on board to reprise the role that made him a household name. Other guest stars will include Seth MacFarlane, Conan O’Brien, Robert Smigel, Malcolm McDowell, Hulk Hogan, James Van Der Beek, Donald Faison, Abraham Benrubi, Breckin Meyer and Joey Fatone.
Lucasfilm first approached Green and Senreich about putting one of several Star Wars-themed Robot Chicken sketches on the StarWars.com website. Form that meeting came the idea of collaborating on a full special.
A production of Green’s and Senreich’s Stoopid Monkey Prods. and Alex Bulkley’s and Corey Campodonico’s ShadowMachine Films, Robot Chicken: Star Wars will debut at 10 p.m. on June 17 during cartoon Network’s [adult swim] block. A marathon of popular Robot Chicken episodes will follow.
