Rodriguez Weighs Jetsons, Land of the Lost

Despite dropping out of the Director’s Guild and being responsible for half of the box office miscalculation that was Grindhouse, director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) is reportedly being courted to helm two big vfx features based on Saturday morning classics. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker is in negotiations to direct a live-action adaptation of the ’60s sci-fi toon The Jetsons, as well as Universal’s take on Land of the Lost starring Will Ferrell.

The Jetsons, which is being produced by Denise Di Novi and Donald De Line, is apparently further along in the scripting stage with Adam Goldberg (Fanboys) handling writing duties. The pic may also jive better to Rodriguez’s sensibilities since he’s obviously fond of shooting against green screens and creating entire fantasy worlds in CG, as he did with the three Spy Kids films, Sin City and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

With Ferrell involved, Universal’s update of Sid and Marty Krofft’s ’70s series Land of the Lost will most likely be a comedy, much as the original show is to modern viewers. That version featured a family of explorers who stumble upon a rift in time and find themselves in a jungle inhabited by stop-motion dinosaurs. Recapturing that magic may call for more low-tech, traditional effects.

Rodriguez broke ties with the Director’s Guild in 2004 when the organization denied his request to credit Sin City graphic novel author Frank Miller as a co-director on the feature film. To direct a studio film, he would have to pay partial guild dues and work with a DGA supervisor on the set, according to the trade.
