The power of imagination is celebrated this week as Bridge to Terabithia from Disney and Walden Media is joined on home video by the Beatrix Potter biopic Miss Potter from The Weinstein Co. Both live-action films are augmented by animated elements that serve to distract their protagonists from their real-life drama.
Based on Katherine Paterson’s 1987 Newbery Award-winning coming-of-age novel, Bridge to Terabithia revolves around an artistic boy (Josh Hutcherson) who is bullied at school but finds companionship in his new neighbor and classmate (Annasophia Robb). Together, they create a mystical, imaginary kingdom in the woods near their homes and escape the pressures of their real lives.
The film marks the live-action directorial debut of Gabor Csupo, co-founder of Klasky-Csupo, the animation company behind Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys. While not quite as CG-loaded as theatrical trailers suggested, Terabithia does involve some fantasy elements created by Weta Digital, the vfx house behind the Lord of the Rings films and Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake.
DVD extras include a look at the themes of the book, a behind-the-scenes production documentary and commentary by Csupo, writer Jeff Stockwell, producer Hal Lieberman, star Hutcherson and producer Lauren Levine. The disc carries a suggested retail price of $29.99.
Miss Potter stars Renee Zellweger (Bee Movie, Shark Tale) as Beatrix Potter, the beloved children’s book author best known for the books The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, which were animated in the late ’80s with Dennis Hopper and Meryl Streep providing narration. Ewan McGregor (Valiant, Robots) plays her publisher and love interest in the story of the author’s life and struggle for independence in Victorian England. The film is directed by Babe helmer Chris Noonan and features brief bits of animation that allow Potter’s characters to leap off the page. The DVD lists for $29.95
