Clip: Golf Tips from ‘One-of-a-Kind Marcie,’ Premiering Friday

Apple TV+ today released a sneak peek clip from the new Peanuts special Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie, premiering globally on Friday, August 18. The special follows Marcie, an introvert who loves her solitude but also enjoys helping her friends, exemplifying that sometimes the people who make the biggest difference aren’t the ones who grab the spotlight.

To train for the school golf championship, Marcie assists Peppermint Patty as her caddie, offering thoughtful and deliberate advice to help her win. Meanwhile, after coming up with brilliant solutions to her classmates’ problems — from hallway traffic jams to lunchtime pizza shortages — Marcie is unexpectedly elected as class president … a role she never wanted. Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, Marcie struggles to cope with the expectations of her new job and retreats as far from the public eye as possible.

As the golf championship begins, Marcie is still in hiding, and Peppermint Patty is forced to tee off with Charlie Brown filling in as her caddie. But after some wise advice and a little introspection, Marcie realizes she can still make a difference for her friends and the school — she’ll just have to buck other people’s expectations and do it her own unique way.

Produced for Apple TV+ by Peanuts and WildBrain, the special is directed by Emmy Award winner Raymond S. Persi (The Simpsons, Wreck-It Ralph), written by Betsy Walters (The Snoopy Show, Snoopy in Space) and executive produced by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz, Cornelius Uliano, Paige Braddock, Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts and Logan McPherson. Cognitive scientist Scott Barry Kaufman served as the introvert consultant on the special.

  • Watch: The Worms Return in ‘Futurama’ – “Parasites Regained”

Watch: The Worms Return in ‘Futurama’ – “Parasites Regained”

Some familiar, wriggly faces are returning to screens in the next episode of Futurama Season 11, “Parasites Regained.” Premiering Monday, August 14 on Hulu, the adventure unfolds after Nibbler falls ill, and the Planet Express crew must shrink down for a dangerous journey into the desert world contained within his litter box.

Futurama is created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. Season 11, picking up with Fry and the gang after a brief 10-year hiatus, features the voices of returning stars John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman. Executive producers include Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz.

Check out the clips and full episode summary below.

Episode Summary: Fry can’t make it to a date with Leela, so she takes her pet Nibbler instead. He’s an ancient alien with great wisdom — though other than that he lives pretty much like a pet cat.

They go to see an alien-language film with subtitles. They have a great time, and bond over their shared interest in the intellectual subject matter. Nibbler goes from being a pet to being Leela’s good friend.

But then: Nibbler falls ill. He’s suddenly getting confused and having trouble with large words. They take him to the vet, and it turns out he has worms. If left untreated, the worms will cause dementia, and the total loss of his brilliant mind. Nibbler, and Leela, are terrified.

The parasites have infested his litter box, which is filled with his precious ancestral sand,. The only hope is to shrink the crew down to microscopic size and send them in to battle the worms. At that scale, it’s an epic desert adventure in a Dune-like desert world, inhabited by monster worms and other strange creatures.

The worms turn out to be the same group previously encountered in episode 3.01, “Parasite’s Lost”. A life-and-death battle breaks out, but it’s interrupted when ailing Nibbler himself shrinks down and enters the scene like a messiah, calling for peace.

With his great wisdom, he has come to see the beauty of this world in the litter box… how everything depends on everything else in a beautiful web of life. He decides to give up his consciousness, so that these creatures can live on. He is at peace with his decision.

But Leela is devastated. She is determined to find a way to save Nibbler’s great mind, even if it means undergoing a very dangerous psychedelic experience in the litter box world.

  • ‘O Pioneer’ Doc Animating West Virginian Lives Sets Cinequest World Premiere

‘O Pioneer’ Doc Animating West Virginian Lives Sets Cinequest World Premiere

O Pioneer, the latest feature documentary from Clara Lehmann & Jonathan Lacocque (Born in a Ballroom), will receive its World Premiere at this month’s Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in San Jose, California (August 15-30). The filmmakers, who are partners in the creative studio Coat of Arms in Helvetia, West Virginia, will be in attendance at the festival’s 33rd edition.

“We’re thrilled to start our film festival journey in California at Cinequest,” said the co-directors. “The festival’s stamp of approval gives us hope that these stories — often mistold or overlooked — are important. We’re also confident audiences will enjoy the film’s ambitious mix of live action, musical interludes and hand-drawn animation.”

The film celebrates three Appalachians from West Virginia as they embark upon an important journey — a journey that unfolds in the midst of a pandemic and personal heartache. Weaving narration with archival pioneer footage, candid moments from each subject, poetic vignettes and dream-like animation, O Pioneer redefines what it means to be a pioneer and asks viewers to courageously champion the pioneer within.

The project also aims to rethink the stereotypical understanding of the American pioneer through a modern narrative set in West Virginia, which continues to experience a decline in population. In 2017, the state ranked second highest in both numeric and percentage population decline. With this exodus and the ravages of opioids and joblessness across the state, those that stay face two paths, as the filmmakers frame it: one of hopelessness and apathy, and the other of the pioneer.

Following its World Premiere at Cinequest, O Pioneer will screen publicly at two additional events, the Richmond International Film Festival (Sept. 26-Oct. 1) and Clarksburg, West Virginia’s MTN Craft Film Festival (Sept. 29-30). Additional festival screenings will be announced as they become available and an Appalachian tour of screenings will follow the film’s festival run.

Directed by Lehmann and Lacocque, O Pioneer stars (in order of appearance) Kaïa Kater, Nellie Rose Gundersen Davis, Tim Hibbs and James Morley. Written by Lehmann and produced by Lehmann, Lacocque and Grace Lawson, the film features cinematography by Lacocque, who also edits with Chris Parkhurst to a score composed by Ho-Ling Tang.

  • Dragons Rise in New ‘Ragna Crimson’ Trailer

Dragons Rise in New ‘Ragna Crimson’ Trailer

A third sinister trailer for the humans vs. dragons anime showdown Ragna Crimson was released today, timed with the news that the dark fantasy series will premiere with a one-hour special Saturday, September 30 on Japan’s Tokyo MX, BS11 and MBS. A special premiere screening event will be held Sept. 2 at the Shinjuku Piccadilly theater in Tokyo.

Along with the promo and a new key visual, actors Junichi Suwabe, Fairouz Ai, Mamiko Noto and Hiroki Touchi were announced as additional cast members. Fans also got to hear the show’s opening theme for the first time — the tune, “ROAR,” is performed by the four-piece rock band ulma sound junction.

Ragna Crimson, created as a manga by Daiki Kobayashi (serialized on Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan JOKER magazine), follows the journey of a boy named Ragna, a young dragon hunter who wields a silver sword. His tale unfolds as an ultra-tough, action-packed isekai battle.

Synopsis: “Dragon Hunters” use their silver swords to hunt dragons to make a living. Ragna, a starting out hunter buddies with Leonica, a genius dragon hunter with a tremendous score, to battle dragons every day. Ragna has only one wish — “I wouldn’t complain if can’t become strong. I just want to be with Leo.” But his small wish is brutally shattered by an attack of a “superior dragon,” a being much stronger than any dragon they had fought with.

Seeing the strong enemy in front of him, Ragna remembers a bad dream he had been suffering from for the past few days. In his dreams, Ragna was stronger than anyone else, but living in a devastating future life in solitude, with nothing to save and protect. What is his future trying to tell him? What path should he take now? Ragna takes one step forward to avert his devastating future with a new buddy called Crimson, who is a bag of mysteries.

The newly released key visual shows the protagonists Ragna and Crimson in front with powerful rivals Ultimatia and Woltekamui looming in the back. Woltekamui, one of the stronger enemies (voiced by Suwabe), and other dragons are shown more in detail in the new trailer, along with the slime voiced by Ai.

“Woltekamui is very, very strong. He will appear later in the show as an extraordinarily strong enemy that confronts Ragna and his friends. I look forward to see how the fierce battle scenes in the manga will be shown in the anime,” said Suwabe. “Oh, just in case — this ‘strong enemy’ never becomes a comrade. He’s a real bad guy!”

At the Tokyo premiere screening, the full one-hour launch episode will be shown, followed by a panel including voice stars Chiaki Kobayashi (Ragna) and Ayumu Murase (Crimson). Pre-orders have opened via Lawson Ticket.

Produced by studio Silver Link, the Ragna Crimson series is directed by Ken Takahashi and written by Deko Akao, featuring character design by Shimpei Aoki, art direction by Asuka Komiyama (Cosmo Project) and music by Koji Fujimoto (Sus4 Inc.) and Osamu Sasaki.

The voice cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi (Ragna), Ayumu Murase (Crimson), Inori Minase (Leonica), Fairouz Ai (Slime), Mamiko Noto (Chimera), Hiroki Touchi (Golem), Reina Ueda (Ultimatia), Junichi Suwabe (Woltekamui), Takehito Koyasu (Grymwelte), Shunsuke Takeuchi (Disas Trois), Kozo Shioya (Temruogtaf) and Nobutoshi Canna (Future Ragna).

“This title has extremely unique characters, starting with Crimson, but the Slime is one of the strange characters,” said Ai. “The story is pretty serious, with Ragna going through a lot of agony and having his precious things taken away. But the Slime brightens up the scene with its non-conforming character. I believe its charm is where he just keeps his own pace, and I tried to express that!”
