Having already taken pioneering strides with its 2018 film Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor, the first animated feature produced entirely in the Unreal Engine, Islamabad-based 3rd World Studios has tackled another first with its action-packed sci-fi sequel. According to the producers, Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God is the first stereoscopic 3D animated feature produced in Pakistan.
The first Allahyar movie follows the titular young protagonist and a motley crew of endangered species animals (Mehru the markhor goat, Hero the chukar partridge and Chak’ku the snow leopared) caught up in an unbelievable adventure that sheds light on illegal wildlife hunting. In Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God, Allyahar and the unflappable Hero set out to solve the mystery of the disappearing trees in the Chinnar forest, and find themselves transported to a remarkable high-tech world where they team up with new friends to save Allahyar’s father from a race of wood-poaching robots.
Written and directed once again by Uzair Zaheer Khan, Executive Producer of 3rd World Studios, Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God features a voice cast packed with Pakistani star power, featuring Humayun Saeed, Ali Zafar, Iqra Aziz, Meera, Bushra Ansari, Nadia Jamil, Anum Zaidi, Azlan Uzair and Azfar Jafri.
Released in 3D across Pakistan in late June, for Eid al-Adha, the film was created in a custom pipeline combining motion-capture technology, again utilizing Unreal Engine for much of the production. You can get a peek at the process in the studio’s behind-the-scenes video on the making of an animated COVID-19 PSA.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) selection at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), taking place September 7 to 17, will feature compelling documentary and animated storytelling from emerging filmmakers. This includes the World Premiere of Montreal director Marielle Dalpé’s professional debut: the animated short Aphasia.
Premiering in the TIFF Short Cuts program, Aphasia is described as an unsettling sensory experience that immerses us in the world of people with Alzheimer’s disease who are facing the loss of their language capabilities. The film utilizes a mixed technique, blending under-camera and digital animation.
Aphasia [c/o the National Film Board of Canada]From the NFB:
Propelled by a jarring, lyrical aesthetic, the film pulls viewers into a disconcerting sensory experience. Visuals and sounds multiply and are superimposed on each other. Images collide as the voice of the narrator, Clare Coulter, dissolves into echoes. Meanwhile, startling glitch effects shatter the clean lines of the images.
In her debut professional animated short, Marielle Dalpé is not content to simply evoke the world of language dysfunction. Instead, she fully immerses us in it. The film allows us to feel what it must be like to engage in a battle with time and the limits of our own minds, while everything seems to be slipping away…
This powerful and important work highlights the ambiguous fragility of existence, and reminds us of that which makes us uniquely human: our ability to communicate.

The English-language version screening at TIFF features the voice of veteran Toronto-born actress Clare Coulter (Three Pines). The 3’45” film is produced by Marc Bertrand and executive produced by Christine Noël for the NFB’s French Program Animation Studio. The sound design is by Luigi Allemano, who also worked on Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis’s Oscar-nominated NFB animated short The Flying Sailor.
Since graduating from Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Dalpé has been a finalist in the 2017 edition of the NFB’s Cinéaste recherché(e) contest, and received a special mention at the pitch competition held at the Cinémathèque québécoise’s Sommets du cinéma d’animation in 2020.
Following its TIFF premiere, Aphasia is also selected for the Ottawa International Animation Festival (September 20–24).

Enjoying record-breaking on-site attendance, the 27thLA Shorts International Film Festival celebrated a highly animated edition this year. The Brave Locomotive, Andrew Pierce Chesworth’s homage to classic Merrie Melodies and Disney shorts, earned the Best Animation honor and immediately became qualified for Academy Award consideration. An accomplished animator, Chesworth was previously nominated for the best animated short Oscar for One Small Step, which he directed with Bobby Pontillas at TAIKO Studios.
Described in its crowdfunding campaign as “a love letter to the Andrews Sisters and 1940s animation,” Chesworth began developing the concept in 2008 and recorded the original music with Tom Hambleton in 2009. After spending many years on the shelf as Chesworth pursued his studio animation career, the Old West tale of a mighty little train facing disaster is chugging along the festival circuit and will be released online later this year.
“My crew and I couldn’t be more grateful for The Brave Locomotive winning Best Animation at its LA Shorts International Film Fest premiere!” Chesworth enthused. “The Brave Locomotive had a very long, noncontiguous production journey, so it was a profound gift to feel love reflected back by audience members. The film wouldn’t be what it is without the brilliant music by Tom Hambleton. I was thrilled to see his work get so much deserved affection in the panel after the screening!”
Additionally, the LA Shorts hosted multiple visually stunning animated films from Max’s Only You: An Animated Shorts Collection, the University of Southern California (USC) and talented indie creators such as Vishavjit Singh and Ryan Westra (American Sikh), Linda Malik and Brainstorm Productions (Willow’s Tale), Jour Majesty a.k.a. Michael C. Perry (Walls) and Chelsea Heard (Curls).

“I was thoroughly impressed with the heart and soul of our animators this year,” noted festival coordinator Jared Nigro. “In a tumultuous time for the animation industry, the perspective and dedication to craft transcended any sense of hard times. Animation continues to be a powerhouse of talent. This year’s films, alongside our star-studded animation panel, proved this to be truer than ever.”

Kids’ & family entertainment indie Studio 100 Media has struck deals with streaming platforms Peacock (U.S.A.), Kabillion (U.S.A.) and ITVX (U.K.) for the CG animated series FriendZSpace. Targeted at children five to nine years old, the 52 x 11’ series co-produced by Flying Bark Productions and T&B Media Global is set to launch in August 2023 on ITVX and on Peacock and Kabillion later this year.
Created by Dan Clark (Team Smithereen, Yo Gabba Gabba) and Oscar Covar (Team Smithereen, Tasty Tales of the Food Truckers), the fast-paced action-comedy series center on best friends Alice, Leo and Kim. The trio may seem like regular human kids, but behind their normal façade they are risk-taking deep space friend-makers.
Each episode follows the three as they jet into space in their unpredictable star cruiser, The Dart. Accompanied by BotDog (half puppy and half high-tech Swiss army knife) their mission is simple and wonderfully weird: locate planets, find alien kids, introduce themselves, and make friends. But making friends with alien kids is tricky! Some kids live in the bushy eyebrows of a dangerously moody slobbering beast, while the kids from another planet are so colossal, the Earth kids need to climb them like skyscrapers just to say, “Hi!”
Every alien kid they meet is ‘friendable’. But befriending alien kids is never easy. Different customs, funny alien biological quirks and pressing narrative events create comic complications that must be overcome! FriendZSpace is all about kids and kid culture — alien and human — it ́s about embracing our differences and getting into exciting trouble in the process!
PACT Advertising and Yeti Farm Animation Studio announce their new creative partnership to develop a new Peter and Penny Puck children’s animated series and other Peter Puck animated content for broadcast and streaming channels.
Originally created by Hanna-Barbera with the creative assistance from hockey sportscaster Brian McFarlane, the character continues to appeal to hockey fans young and old. In the months ahead, Peter Puck will be creatively refreshed for a contemporary audience, along with his sister, Penny Puck.
“Since their U.S. and Canadian debuts in the early 1970s, Peter and Penny Puck have captured the hearts of hockey fans across North America,” comments Donald Bilodeau, Co-Founder, PACT Advertising. “We recognized the need for great children’s content and searched for the right animation partner to help us realize the potential of these iconic and beloved characters. Together, Peter and Penny Puck will be the new ambassadors for hockey and youth sports for players and athletes of all ages.”
Peter Puck was originally introduced in 1973 during hockey game broadcast intermissions to help teach viewers at home about the rules of hockey, as well as the wholesome values of fairness, fun at play, respect in sports and good sportsmanship.
While reimagined for a contemporary audience, the production partners say the new Peter and Penny Puck will continue to educate, entertain and inspire viewers, advancing the timeless values that make these characters so important to hockey and the wonderful world of sports. Plans for Peter Puck animated content include streaming series for children and prime time audiences and animated public service interstitials.
“Originals and brands that have both the existing and potential legacy to delight and impact kids and their caregivers’ quality of life are at the heart of our ‘Why’ at Yeti Farm and part of our founding core values,” says Jay Surridge, Chief Creative Officer, Yeti Farm. “As ambassadors of youth sports including hockey, we immediately recognized the opportunity to foster a positive and modern message around the classic recognizable Peter and Penny Puck characters. We cannot wait to bring them back to life in a fun, engaging and contemporary way in this exciting partnership.”

Visual effects crews at Marvel Studios filed for a unionization election with the National Labor Relations Board on Monday. Entertainment union IATSE points out that this move signals a major shift in an industry that has largely remained non-union since modern VFX was pioneered during production of the first Star Wars films in the 1970s. A supermajority of Marvel’s more than 50 worker crew signed authorization cards indicating they wished to be represented by IATSE (the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees).
This marks the first time VFX professionals have joined together to demand the same rights and protections as their unionized colleagues in the film industry. Mark Patch, VFX Organizer for IATSE, highlighted the significance of this moment: “For almost half a century, workers in the visual effects industry have been denied the same protections and benefits their coworkers and crewmates have relied upon since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry. This is a historic first step for VFX workers coming together with a collective voice demanding respect for the work we do.”
While positions like production designers/art directors, camera operators, sound, editors, hair & makeup artists, costumes / wardrobe, script supervisors, grips, lighting, props and paint, among others, have historically been represented by IATSE in motion picture and television, workers in VFX classifications historically have not.
“Turnaround times don’t apply to us, protected hours don’t apply to us, and pay equity doesn’t apply to us,” notes VFX coordinator Bella Huffman. “Visual effects must become a sustainable and safe department for everyone who’s suffered far too long and for all newcomers who need to know they won’t be exploited.”
The Marvel VFX workers’ filing for a union election comes at a pivotal moment in the film and television industry, amidst ongoing strikes by both the Actors and Writers Guilds as both seek fair contracts with the studios and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
“We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of solidarity that’s breaking down old barriers in the industry and proving we’re all in this fight together. That doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb asserts. “Entertainment workers everywhere are sticking up for each other’s rights, that’s what our movement is all about. I congratulate these workers on taking this important step and using their collective voice.”
Disney-owned Marvel Studios has created some of the biggest VFX-fueled box-office successes in film history, exceeding $2 billion with Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War. The studio also delivers content inspired by the MCU to Disney+, such as the critically acclaimed WandaVision and Loki. Upcoming projects currently in post production include theatrical movies The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World, as well as Loki Season 2, Echo, Ironheart and Agatha: Coven of Chaos for Disney+.
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees or IATSE (in full: International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada), is a labor union representing over 168,000 technicians, artisans and craftspersons in the entertainment industry, including live events, motion picture and television production, broadcast and trade shows in the United States and Canada.
IATSE also encompasses The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839), which represents animation artists and production workers.

In Monday’s new episode of the re-defrosted Futurama, Bender and the whole Planet Express crew head west to join the bitcoin mining rush. Debuting August 7 on Hulu, “How the West Was 1010001” also features appearances by the Robot Mafia, stab-happy Roberto and the return of the Borax Kid — introducing Rusty the Donkey!

Check out sneak-peek clips below, followed by full episode description.
S11 Episode 3 Summary: The Professor unwisely invested in bitcoin and lost everything. Now, he’s in debt to the Robot Mafia.
His one slim hope: the crew will need to join the gold rush of people flocking west to seek their fortune in the bitcoin mining frenzy. The Professor’s plan is to mine for the rare mineral Thallium, needed to make advanced computer chips used in the bitcoin operations stationed near the mines.
They re-outfit the Planet Express ship as a wagon and journey west to “Doge City.” There, massive bitcoin farms use such gross amounts of electricity that there is no power at all for the mining camps… so life is much like in the old west, with campfires, horses, whiskey, poker, player pianos, panning for nuggets, etc.
Several intertwining stories take place in the old west town: Fry joins forces with a renowned gunslinger, the Borax Kid. Leela takes a job in the local saloon. Hermes tries to keep his son Dwight from a life of crime. Zoidberg becomes a frontier doctor, and Bender buys a donkey. And all the while, insane robot Roberto terrorizes the town with his patented knife-gun.
Things come to a head when Amy discovers the largest Thallium nugget in history… enough to pay off the ransom. But… they have to guard it through a long, tense night from Roberto before it can be weighed and sold. The climactic scene features a sci-fi gunfight for the ages.
