Watch: ‘Rubble & Crew’ Welcome Property Brother Drew Scott to the Job Site

More big news for the plucky little pups of PAW Patrol spin-off Rubble & Crew, as TV personality and half of the Property Brothers duo Drew Scott is guest starring in Monday’s new episode! Premiered August 7 at 11 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, “The Crew Does a Home Renovation” follows Mix and Rubble as their favorite TV renovation star, Hank Hammer, comes to see them at work.

Voiced by Scott, Hank Hammer is a construction guru and the charismatic host of a popular home renovation show. He makes sure his clients are 100% satisfied with the job and always asks “Do you love it, or do you love it!?” Whether he’s fixing shingles on a roof or helping the pups move an entire house across town, he always gets the job done!

Produced by Spin Master Entertainment, Rubble & Crew marks the first television spinoff for preschool powerhouse PAW Patrol, which will celebrate its milestone 10th anniversary on August 12.

Set in the community of Builder Cove, a neighboring town to PAW Patrol’s Adventure Bay, Rubble & Crew centers on Rubble, the funny and optimistic leader of the construction crew. In the small, quickly growing town, lots of things are still needed for the community to come together. Rubble and his construction pup family — his pup cousins Mix, Wheeler, Charger, Motor, along with Grandpa Gravel and Auntie Crane — must work together to tackle and build all the projects the town needs.

Nickelodeon and Spin Master Entertainment recently announced they are doubling down on PAW Patrol in its 10th anniversary year with season renewals of the top-rated preschool series and spinoff Rubble & Crew. The award-winning PAW Patrol has been greenlit for an 11th season (26 half-hour episodes), while Rubble & Crew has been renewed for season two (26 half-hour episodes).

  • MAKE Originals Launches New Episodes of ‘Dead Moon Walking’

MAKE Originals Launches New Episodes of ‘Dead Moon Walking’

MAKE Originals, the in-house development and production unit of multi-discipline studio MAKE, has launched new episodes of its animated micro-short series Dead Moon Walking. Originally released with five episodes in 2012, the nine-part series is set in the hostile depths of space.

“With the launch of MAKE Originals, we decided to re-release the original episodes and follow them up with a handful of new episodes,” explained Creative Director Danny Robashkin.

Dead Moon Walking follows two astronauts, Orion and Leo, as they experience hapless misadventures, space oddities and miscarriages in lunar judgment — or maybe they are just unlucky. The series was all traditionally animated by hand. From early animatics to finished designs.

“All ideations were taken into consideration for balancing the cute and genuine optimism of Orion and Leo, with their morbidly unlucky incompetence and the gruesome realities of space travel,” added Robashkin.

“We pieced Dead Moon together under the notion of wanting to create animated pieces that felt like comic strips. We started to pitch stories that fit in a bite sized 15 second format. Chang Dai (lead designer) first pitched ‘Comet’ and had the whole team rolling on the floor. After that, we picked the ideas that made us laugh the hardest,” said Alec Soelle, Lead Designer.

“As we developed the series, we realized that this was about two characters, facing death and personal injury while doing mundane and simple things in space,” he continued. “The Darwin Awards were popular at this time; where people get awarded for the dumbest ways to die and take their own stupidity out of the gene pool. Also, a popular video called Dumb Ways to Die came out. While these weren’t a direct influence, this kind of thing was prevalent across the internet at the time we were in production.”

Known primarily for their commercial work, MAKE announced earlier this year their six-project slate of animated short series through MAKE Originals. The first will be Mechsplorers, led by Aaron Dabelow and Andrew Chesworth (Oscar nominated short One Small Step), which follows The Robotsons family — the most scientific scientists on Earth who are sent to explore a verdant Earth-like planet for new technologies, and unravel the mysterious origins of the so-called “Mechs.”

  • Mortal Media Leads Investment Round in Animation House Swaybox

Mortal Media Leads Investment Round in Animation House Swaybox

Mortal Media, the L.A.-based film and television production company helmed by Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil, today announced the company has lead an investment round for Swaybox Studios, the animation studio behind 2022’s viral NFL Superbowl LVI commercial directed by Peter Berg. Mortal also joins Swaybox’s advisory board, and Griffin and Kalil have put an untitled live-action/animation hybrid project in development with the company.

Co-founded by co-CEOs Theresa Andersson and Arthur Mintz in 2013 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Swaybox Studios has developed a new animation technology and process for film and television production, called “Momo Animation.” The proprietary technology involves a combination of three traditional animation forms: CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion and live-action real-time performance.

“We’ve been so impressed with Arthur and Theresa’s vision and long-term aspirations for the company,” said Kalil. “Swaybox’s technology is really remarkable, but it’s the artistry of their animators, puppeteers, and craftspeople that makes Swaybox animation feel like magic.”

During its early stages, Swaybox focused on R&D and patent acquisition. The latest funding round, led by Mortal Media, with participation from Joel Whitley and IAG Capital Partners, will enable the studio to expand its infrastructure and streamline its production pipeline demands.

As Swaybox advisory board members, the Mortal Media team will actively collaborate in identifying new projects and cultivating partnerships that align best with the disruptive potential of the new technology.

“Whenever we get to catch a glimpse of Swaybox’s latest animation tests, we can’t stop smiling. This investment signifies our commitment to helping the talented artists at Swaybox push boundaries and innovate these new tools for storytelling,” said Griffin.

Currently, Swaybox Studios is developing multiple projects with notable directors and writers, including an upcoming feature film with Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield, The Batman) production company 6th & Idaho, in addition to the to-be-announced project with Mortal.

“We are incredibly excited to have Ryan and Blake as strategic partners,” said Mintz and Andersson-Mintz. “Their creative approach and genuine passion for animation align perfectly with ours, and their commitment to Swaybox will help us continue to explore new possibilities in the medium as we strive to build a first-class animation studio.”

Mortal Media is behind the recent Apple TV+ sci-fi dramedy series Hello Tomorrow!, starring Emmy-winner Billy Crudup, this year’s reboot of White Men Can’t Jump starring Jack Harlow for Disney/20th Century Studios, and is currently in development on both scripted and unscripted film and series projects for Netflix, Paramount, FX, Disney and more.

Mortal Media is repped by UTA, Ziffren Brittenham, and Metro Public Relations.

Crayola Launches Kids’ Content Studio, Boards MIMO’s ‘Finn Caspian’ Adaptation

Crayola has announced that it is launching Crayola Studios — a new division dedicated to creating kids’ and family content that “explores the limitless possibilities of children’s creativity and leverages color as an intrinsic element of the story” across multiple genres.

With a pipeline of shows already in development, the portfolio features a range of projects, across numerous content touchpoints. The first project to be announced is The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian a co-development with MIMO Studios. Crayola is actively partnering with production companies, animation studios and IP owners, such as MIMO, to create content for leading kids’ broadcast platforms around the world.

Overseeing the content slate is Crayola’s EVP Marketing, Victoria Lozano, with support from Goatfish Agency — founded by Rick Glankler, Fremantle’s former President and General Manager Kids & Family Entertainment. Crayola’s sister company Hallmark Media will also support the initiative.

“As world leaders in creative self-expression, the establishment of Crayola Studios  is a logical next step for us, it builds on plans announced last year to develop entertainment content that inspires and nurtures the next generation and helps them develop lifelong creative mindsets,” Lozano says. “Our unique perspective offers an exciting opportunity for the industry as it searches for stand out new and trusted content that has creativity at its heart.”

Cyma Zarghami’s MIMO Studios will co-develop and produce an animated adaptation of the award-winning kids’ podcast Gen-Z Media’s The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian, which is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out and former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids. The podcast was launched in 2016 and has released 12 seasons and 260 episodes. With over 24 million downloads, the series is consistently number one on the iTunes Kids & Family chart. Finn Caspian is also a best-selling book series and was selected as Best Book 2020 by the School Library Journal.

A science-fiction adventure story, The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian centers on Finn Caspian, an eight-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. Together with friends Abigail, Elias and Vale, Finn forms Explorers Troop 301 which takes off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help aliens and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Space Station.

The 52 x 11′ series, announced in May 2020 by MIMO, will be written by Brad Birch (PJ Masks, Johnny Test).

“Crayola is synonymous with kids and color and we are so excited to collaborate with them to bring these beloved journeys to life through world-class animation and artistry,” says Zarghami, “We have been cultivating The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian since we first identified it and immediately saw the great potential and opportunity to tell rich stories in video the way Gen-Z Media did in the podcast. The combination pf great characters, creativity, adventure, and information is something we can’t wait to bring to audiences worldwide.”

Lozano adds, “This series allows kids to explore the power and limitless potential of imagination, self-expression and creativity.  Its DNA is at the very core of what we do at Crayola and a perfect example of the type of shows we want to produce going forward. We’re thrilled to join forces with the talented team at MIMO to bring Finn’s action-packed adventures to life.”

Exclusive Pics: ‘Warrior King’ Fantasy Epic Opens in NorAm August 25

A rich and enchanting world born out of Asian lore is heading to U.S. theaters this month in the CG-animated fantasy epic Warrior King. Based on the millennium-old tale of King Gesar, the Chinese-produced film from director Lu Qi opens August 25 through Cineverse (rated PG-13).

Following last month’s announcement and debut of the official U.S. trailer (find it here), Animation Magazine is pleased to debut a collection of exclusive stills from the film, showcasing the divine and devilish characters Gesar encounters throughout a world rife with magic and peril.

    All images courtesy of Cineverse.

Warrior King is based on the story of King Gesar; born to a divine lineage and destined to become a great hero and ruler. As a young man, the future king grew up exiled in a realm overrun by menacing demons and monsters. When evil forces threaten his home, he embarks on a heroic journey to save his people and fulfill his destiny as a legendary leader.

The story of Gesar is considered one of Central Asia’s literary classics and was passed down in oral tradition for some 1,000 years, as well as literary, poetic and stage play versions. Its Tibetan iteration may now be the most prominent — it is certainly one of the longest, running to over 100 volumes and a million verses, according to some calculations.

  • ‘Lyla in the Loop’ Sets PBS KIDS Premiere for February

‘Lyla in the Loop’ Sets PBS KIDS Premiere for February

On February 5, 2024, PBS KIDS will debut Lyla in the Loop, a funny and engaging new animated series for kids ages four to eight, produced by Mighty Picnic and Pipeline Studios. Centered on a dynamic seven-year-old girl with a focus on problem-solving and critical thinking skills, the show will debut in both English and Spanish.

“Lyla is curious and resourceful, and when it comes to figuring out solutions to everyday problems, she doesn’t give up, even when it takes several tries to get it right,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President and General Manager, PBS KIDS. “We know audiences will quickly be drawn to Lyla’s determination and can-do-attitude, and we’re excited to introduce this warm, funny and smart series to our viewers.”

Synopsis: Lyla in the Loop centers on Lyla and her family — mom Lydia and dad Louis, who run Loops Lunch diner; older twin sisters Liana and Louisa; younger brother Luke; and blue sidekick Stu, who always does exactly, literally, what was asked.

With her family and best friend Everett Phan, Lyla tackles all sorts of challenges, from building her own homemade carnival games using repurposed materials, to riding along and lending a hand on the neighborhood trash and recycling route, to making a puppet show that recreates the Jamaican folktale, Anansi and the Goat. Lyla even helps her sister navigate the ethics of creating an art project with the help of Stu, showcasing an age-appropriate example of current questions surrounding the use of real-world AI tools.

In every adventure, Lyla and Stu introduce and explore foundational computational thinking concepts, leading to some comedic disasters and creative solutions, all while helping others in their community. The series will support a wide range of learners, modeling flexible approaches to finding and designing solutions, and creative self-expression.

“Kids are natural creative problem-solvers, experimenting and investigating the world around them with joyful curiosity,” says series creator and showrunner Dave Peth. “Lyla in the Loop celebrates and encourages kids and the grownups in their lives to recognize those innate abilities and see them as a powerful tool to help others, express themselves and solve all kinds of problems in everyday life.”

The series pulls inspiration for its setting from Philadelphia, Peth’s homebase, and includes vocals by students from the public School District of Philadelphia in the series theme song, which was composed and performed by Grammy-nominated musician, Divinity Roxx.

“Finding stories and issues our audiences can relate to is paramount to creating the relatable world of Lyla Loops. When viewers can connect to and identify with characters, they’re more likely to absorb and retain the curriculum,” says series executive producer and head writer Fracaswell Hyman. “Working with a diverse group of writers who share authentic stories and interrelationships that ring true is where we find inspiration, humor and heartfelt moments that may spark new ways of looking at ourselves and our friends.”

Story editor Monique D. Hall adds, “Kids who watch Lyla in the Loop will find themselves inspired by Lyla’s creativity, encouraged by her willingness to try new things (even if they don’t come easily to her), and entertained by all the fun messes she gets into — and out of — with her buddy, Stu!”

Lyla in the Loop producers will also work to create interactive episodes that incorporate AI-assisted conversation with the main character, Lyla. During the episodes, Lyla will ask the viewer questions, utilize responsive AI technology to understand what the viewer says, and respond accordingly. These episodes will undergo efficacy research to assess children’s learning and engagement and will be released to audiences at a later date.

Digital content for kids, families and teachers based on and launching in tandem with the series will reinforce its core messages, support play and experimentation with computational thinking skills and encourage creative expression.

Lyla in the Loop is created and executive produced by Emmy-winning producer Dave Peth (Odd SquadPeg + CatScribbles and InkDesign Squad), founder of media production and consulting company Mighty Picnic. Emmy-winning children’s content studio Pipeline Studios (Elinor Wonders Why, Alma’s WayBubble Guppies) is animating the series.

The series is voiced by Liyou Abere as Lyla Loops, Izzy Woodbury as Stu, Isaac Ng as Lyla’s best friend Everett Phan, and Eden Cupid, Elijah Lindo, Joseph Motiki, Shechinah Mpumlwana and Morrissa Nicole as the Loops family.

Fracaswell Hyman is the series executive producer and headwriter, with Monique D. Hall serving as story editor, Huy Tran as director, Laurie Rabin as supervising producer, Trina Sanyal as associate producer, Joon Chung as script coordinator and Nneka Bolden as digital producer.

Series advisors for Lyla in the Loop include Amon Millner, PhD, Associate Professor of Computing and Innovation at the Olin College of Engineering directing the Extending Access to STEM Empowerment (EASE) Lab, series Curriculum Director; Nermeen Dashoush, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education, Boston University, Lead Advisor; Yenda Prado, PhD, Education Researcher, University of California, Irvine, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Advisor; V. Scott Solberg, PhD, Professor, Department of Counseling and Applied Human Development, Boston University, Career Pathways and World of Work Advisor; Cosette Strong, Strong Consulting Group, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Advisor.

Funding for the new series was provided by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and a grant from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Ready To Learn Initiative, a federal program that supports the development of innovative educational television and digital media targeted to preschool and early elementary school children and their families.

Trailer: ‘Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie’ Spotlights the Peanuts Maverick on Apple TV+

Sometimes the people who make the biggest difference, aren’t the ones who grab the spotlight…

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for the all-new Peanuts special Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie, premiering globally on Friday, August 18. The story unfolds as the lovable introvert makes a monumental difference from behind the scenes for her friends and her community.

    Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie

Synopsis: To train for the school golf championship, Marcie assists Peppermint Patty as her caddie, offering thoughtful and deliberate advice to help her win. Meanwhile, after coming up with brilliant solutions to her classmates’ problems — from hallway traffic jams to lunchtime pizza shortages – Marcie is unexpectedly elected as class president … a role she never wanted.

Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, Marcie struggles to cope with the expectations of her new job and retreats as far from the public eye as possible. As the golf championship begins, Marcie is still in hiding and Peppermint Patty is forced to tee off with Charlie Brown filling in as her caddie. But after some wise advice and a little introspection, Marcie realizes she can still make a difference for her friends and the school — she’ll just have to buck other people’s expectations and do it her own unique way.

    Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie

Produced for Apple TV+ by Peanuts and WildBrain, the special is directed by Emmy Award winner Raymond S. Persi (The Simpsons, Wreck-It-Ralph), written by Betsy Walters (The Snoopy Show, Snoopy in Space) and executive produced by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz, Cornelius Uliano, Paige Braddock, Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts and Logan McPherson. Cognitive scientist Scott Barry Kaufman served as the introvert consultant on the special

The trailer debut follows news from Apple TV+, Peanuts and WildBrain earlier this year announcing two upcoming Peanuts originals, including Camp Snoopy, a new series featuring Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts along with Charlie Brown and friends as they enjoy an adventure-filled summer outdoors; and the charming new Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin special uncovering the origin story of one of the strip’s most treasured characters and how he ultimately makes friends with Charlie Brown and the gang.

The award-winning slate of original series and films for kids and families on Apple TV+ includes this year’s Academy Award and BAFTA Award-winning animated short film The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse; star-studded animated adventure film Luck from Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation; and, BAFTA Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated animated film Wolfwalkers.

Lost Short from Osamu Kobayashi ‘Hypersonic Music Club’ Debuts Online

Japanese pop culture outlet TokyoScope Blog has unwrapped a gift for sci-fi anime lovers, hosting the online world premiere of HYPERSONIC music club — a never-before-seen short from the late animator Osamu Kobayashi (BECK: Mongolian Chop SquadParadise Kiss). The seven-minute film is set in a funky, futuristic school, where a band of misfits accidentally unleashes trouble from another dimension.

The short was written and directed by Kobayashi, who died in 2021 at age 57 from kidney cancer. The piece is adapted from a webcomic written by TokyoScope’s Patrick Macias (who shares in the post that Kobayashi storyboarded the entire thing in a one-night marathon). The HYPERSONIC music club team also features character designer/animation director Takashi Mukouda (Evangelion Rebuild, Fullmetal AlchemistOne PieceMadoka Magica) and animators Hisashi Mori (Spirited Away), Mitsuo Iso (The End of Evangelion) and Yoshimichi Kameda (One Punch Man).

A talented animator and music lover, Kobayashi began working as a designer and manga artist straight out of high school, and went on to work on anime titles including Blue Submarine No. 6, Gurrenn  Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Lupin the 3rd Part IV, Dororo and Naruto Shippuden. His first short, table&fishman, was included in the Studio 4°C collection Digital Juice in 2002.

  • Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk & NVIDIA Form OpenUSD Alliance to Drive Open Standards for 3D Content

Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk & NVIDIA Form OpenUSD Alliance to Drive Open Standards for 3D Content

Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and NVIDIA, together with the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), an affiliate of the Linux Foundation, today announced the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) to promote the standardization, development, evolution and growth of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description technology.

The alliance seeks to standardize the 3D ecosystem by advancing the capabilities of Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD). By promoting greater interoperability of 3D tools and data, the alliance will enable developers and content creators to describe, compose and simulate large-scale 3D projects and build an ever-widening range of 3D-enabled products and services.

Created by Pixar Animation Studios, OpenUSD is a high-performance 3D scene description technology that offers robust interoperability across tools, data and workflows. Already known for its ability to collaboratively capture artistic expression and streamline cinematic content production, OpenUSD’s power and flexibility make it an ideal content platform to embrace the needs of new industries and applications.

Image of OpenUSD scene “the Pixar kitchen” from clay render (left) to full-render (right).

“Universal Scene Description was invented at Pixar and is the technological foundation of our state-of-the-art animation pipeline,” said Steve May, Chief Technology Officer at Pixar and Chairperson of AOUSD. “OpenUSD is based on years of research and application in Pixar filmmaking. We open-sourced the project in 2016, and the influence of OpenUSD now expands beyond film, visual effects, and animation and into other industries that increasingly rely on 3D data for media interchange. With the announcement of AOUSD, we signal the exciting next step: the continued evolution of OpenUSD as a technology and its position as an international standard.”

The alliance will develop written specifications detailing the features of OpenUSD. This will enable greater compatibility and wider adoption, integration and implementation, and allows inclusion by other standards bodies into their specifications. The Linux Foundation’s JDF was chosen to house the project, as it will enable open, efficient, and effective development of OpenUSD specifications, while providing a path to recognition through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

AOUSD will also provide the primary forum for the collaborative definition of enhancements to the technology by the greater industry. The alliance invites a broad range of companies and organizations to join and participate in shaping the future of OpenUSD.

Diagram of OpenUSD that demonstrates it’s power as a technology for large scale, industrial workflows.

AOUSD steering committee members will be speaking at both the Academy Software Foundation’s Open Source Days on August 6 (watch view the website) and at the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles at the Autodesk Vision Series on August 8 at 1 p.m. PT in Room 404A.

“We are excited to support the launch of the AOUSD and efforts to standardize OpenUSD,” said ASF Executive Director David Morin. “The Academy Software Foundation’s thriving 800+ member USD Working Group focuses on sharing best practices for deployment of USD technologies and providing vetted solutions for common USD issues and will serve as a liaison with the AOUSD. We look forward to working with the AOUSD to represent the interests, ideas and techniques developed by our communities for use in the motion picture industry.”
