  • Sean Pecknold’s Love of Hand-Crafted Animation Takes Flight in Fleet Foxes’ ‘Featherweight’

Sean Pecknold’s Love of Hand-Crafted Animation Takes Flight in Fleet Foxes’ ‘Featherweight’

For the Fleet Foxes’ latest single “Featherweight,” Los Angeles-based director Sean Pecknold crafted a world of struggle and hope brought to life using stop-motion animation and a multiplane camera. The evocative and visually striking film follows a young hawk as he struggles to fly with a broken wing, the successes and bitter failures that come from his attempt, and the second chances that life will sometimes offer – even when all seems lost.

The video premiered on September 21 at the GRAMMY Museum as part of a retrospective featuring Fleet Foxes’ music videos with a conversation between Sean and his brother, band frontman Robin Pecknold.

Since 2008, Sean Pecknold has crafted the visual narrative behind Fleet Foxes’ songs, frequently shifting between stop-frame animation and live action. “When I made the first Fleet Foxes video using clay stop-motion, I fell in love with the tactile quality of the technique and never looked back,” he shared. “There is something really special about creating animations in the real world. The process is more physical and more immediate than clicking away at a mouse and getting red-eyed.”

When conceiving the concept for each music video, Pecknold takes influence from the song’s lyrics as well as the ‘visual shape’ he imagines as he listens. “I’ll play the song on repeat for a few days, and then see what images linger in my mind. When I brought [‘Featherweight’] in and started listening to the stems, I was kind of able to see the song in a new way,” Pecknold explained. “Listening to the texture and tone of these individual tracks – actually hearing the layers that went into the song – was a nice exercise for me to think about the layers of the pictures.”

    Fleet Foxes "Featherweight"
    Fleet Foxes “Featherweight”

To bring “Featherweight” to life, Pecknold joined forces with noted animator Eileen Kohlhepp (Robot Chicken, Anomalisa). “Eileen has an incredible attention to detail and ended up bringing the characters to life in a way I could never have done by myself,” the director noted. Kohlhepp added: “I’ve long admired the way he has been able to use animation to create complex and beautiful worlds in a deceptively simple and thoughtful way.”

The project also allowed Pecknold to continue his collaboration with Toronto-based artist Sean Lewis, whose character designs and landscapes are fundamental to the world of the short film. “I first discovered the work of Sean Lewis when he illustrated one of the first Fleet Foxes t-shirts in 2008,” noted Pecknold. “We had a chance to team up in 2020 to create concept art for a feature length animation I’ve been working on. The experience on that project was so wonderful that I wanted to take the collaboration to the next level with the ‘Featherweight’ animation.”

    Fleet Foxes "Featherweight"
    Fleet Foxes “Featherweight”

“Featherweight” is not the first time Pecknold has combined stop-motion animation with multi-plane down-shooting for one of their music videos — the award-winning music video for “The Shrine / An Argument” also used a multiplane camera. “I had seen the [multiplane] technique in early Disney films like Bambi and Pinocchio, then later when I discovered Lotte Reiniger’s and Yuri Norstein’s films. I’m very drawn to the texture, depth-of-field and parallax inherent in the technique,” he said.

The music video’s five-month production schedule was facilitated by Dropbox, which enabled the team to easily share files. “Dropbox has been a patron of creative short form music videos for the last several years. They were very supportive of our ideas and the creative direction we chose to bring the song to life,” Pecknold pointed out.

Ultimately, the message of the piece is what resonates with those who helped make it. “I think we all go through these journeys where we feel like we’re broken but we keep pushing forward. When [the hawk]’s at the point where he’s the most exhausted and he’s almost given up is when he allows someone else to help him so he can continue on. It’s good to be open to the help of others, cause we can’t do it by ourselves,” Kohlhepp observed. “In my 20 years as an animator, it’s an extremely rare opportunity to work on a project as poetic as ‘Featherweight.’”

    Fantastic Voyage
    Fantastic Voyage

Founded in 1921 by brothers Dave and Max Fleischer, Fleischer Studios (originally Inkwell Studios / Out of the Inkwell Films) was a pioneer in the art and craft of animation, responsible for creating and animating some of the most beloved characters in American animation — including Betty Boop and Koko the Clown. The studio was also renowned for its animation of comics characters Popeye (originally created by Elzie Segar) and Superman (originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster). The artists and innovators of the studio delivered many firsts in film, including the first footage of jazz icon Cab Calloway, Max’s rotoscope invention and the “set-back” process. Today, Max’s grandson Mark Fleischer serves as Chairman & CEO.

The director of nearly 50 films, Richard Fleischer enjoyed an incredibly diverse career helming B-movie thrillers, effects-laden spectaculars, and star-studded epics. The son of animation innovator Max Fleischer, he began his filmmaking journey at RKO where his documentary short Design for Death (1947) earned him an Oscar as producer. He crafted the noir classic The Narrow Margin (1952) and gave Walt Disney his first live-action hit with the big-budget adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). He spent much of the following decade oscillating between true-crime stories and sweeping adventures with films like The Girl on the Red Velvet Swing (1955), The Vikings (1958), Compulsion (1959) and Fantastic Voyage (1966). Eventually, expensive disappointments like Doctor Doolittle (1967) and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) began to weaken his once unshakable stature with the studios of the day. Fleischer’s later output was a mix of cult-favorite genre films and outright embarrassments, The New Centurions (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Mandingo (1975) and remake The Jazz Singer (1980) among them. Well known in the industry for his ability to deal with such difficult personalities as Kirk Douglas, Orson Welles and Rex Harrison, Fleischer related some of the juiciest tales in his 1993 autobiography, Just Tell Me When to Cry. While never a household name, Fleischer nonetheless oversaw some of the most enjoyable cinematic offerings of the 20th Century.

  • Exclusive: Designing ‘Fena: Pirate Princess’ with Kazuto Nakazawa

Exclusive: Designing ‘Fena: Pirate Princess’ with Kazuto Nakazawa

No bones about it: Anime has rocketed from a niche fandom outside Japan’s borders to a major global facet of the toon industry since the days of fan-subbed VHS tapes trading hands at your schoolyard otaku club. One of the latest international collaborations to hit screens, Fena: Pirate Princess — a Crunchyroll and Adult Swim Original series produced at acclaimed Tokyo studio Production I.G — combines seafaring scuffles with classic shoujo inspirations to create a unique animated treasure.

Fena Houtman remembers little about her childhood. Orphaned and raised as a servant in a brothel, her life changes when she escapes to an island of pirates where she discovers the truth behind her family. With Fena being the only one able to unlock her family’s secrets, and a formidable crew of female pirates on her tail, she must take her place as captain of her Samurai crew for a high seas adventure!

Animation Magazine got a special look at some of the character design artwork for Fena this week, and creator/director Kazuto Nakazawa — whose character design and chief animation director credits span El-Hazard, Tenchi in Tokyo, Samurai Champloo, B: The Beginning ,Genius Party Beyond Moondrive, the anime sequence in Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Linkin Park’s “Breaking the Habit” music video, to name a few — was kind enough to answer some of our questions about the creative sparks behind the show.

Animation Magazine: What were some of the visual inspirations for the series?

Kazuto Nakazawa: I pictured a fantasy world of bright colors instead of the dark world. The motif is the 18th century, but I tried to create a fantasy space as much as possible. I was careful not to go in a realistic direction.

What were the main elements of the show’s design as it was developed?

The previous work, B: The Beginning Season 1 (I wasn’t involved in the second season) had ‘black’ as the main image of the story and world, so I simply did this one with the opposite: ‘white.’ The color ‘black’ for B: The Beginning was inspired by the black dyeing technique in Kyoto. The color ‘white’ for Fena: Pirate Princess was inspired by the glistening white dyeing technique used in Toka-machi, Niigata. The traditional technique is done by exposing the fabric to snow and bleaching it with ultraviolet rays. I did the original design, but I think that Yasuko Takahashi’s arrangement made it more gorgeous and soft.

What is a detail of Fena’s character design that reflects who she is?

The color of Fena’s pupils, which I was inspired by the color of the Paraiba Tourmaline gem. It symbolizes purity and innocence.

How does Fena: Pirate Princess stand out from other anime available today?

I wanted to try the very traditional production style from over three decades ago. We normally record voices to animation, but for Fena: Pirate Princess we pre-recorded the voices and had them perform before the animation was made. We practically drew everything and didn’t use any 3D animations, which is very rare nowadays. I did all the storyboarding myself, and all of the key parts of the animation were handled by myself, Tetsuya Takahashi, Saki Fujii and Yasuko Takahashi. The workload was so massive and heavy to divide between us four people, and we were all exhausted mentally and physically — however, we pulled it through because of our great teamwork and trust in each other.

What is your favorite character, story or artistic achievement of the show?

I designed all the characters and did the key animation by myself when we made the very first PV. I asked Yasuko Takahashi to supervise the key animation of Fena and all samurais, as well as the arrangement of the characters and retakes, which allowed me to handle Otto, Salman and O’Malley myself, which is probably the reason I feel strong attachment to all the characters we created at the development stage. In terms of my favorite episodes, it would be 1, 2, 4 and 7. I enjoyed the love romance scenes within the fantasy world.

What was the biggest challenge of producing this project?

It would definitely be the amount of workload. Production halted for over three months because of the pandemic, and it took three additional months to put production back on track. The amount of work was insane while the time was limited. But we didn’t want to cut corners, so we did everything we could to bring the best quality animation to all you fans.

Episode 7, especially, was one where I had to redo more than half of the animation myself. The rest of the episodes weren’t as challenging because I had help from Tetsuya Takahashi and Fujii, who checked all the scenes in just one week! Having them and their contribution to the show were the biggest asset. I feel fortunate to have them in the team.

New episodes of Fena: Pirate Princess air every Saturday. Fans can catch the series subtitled on Crunchyroll and dubbed on Adult Swim.

  • Sting Teams with Director Maya Sanbar for Refugee Tale ‘Footsteps on the Wind’

Sting Teams with Director Maya Sanbar for Refugee Tale ‘Footsteps on the Wind’

One of the year’s Academy Award qualifying animated shorts, Maya Sanbar’s Footsteps on the Wind, tells the story of two siblings —  Noor and her little brother, Josef — who go on a mysterious journey far from home after tragically losing their parents in a devastating earthquake.

The 17-time Grammy Award-winning artist Sting gave his refugee-inspired song “Inshallah” to Sanbar so that she could create an animation film as a therapy tool for traumatized refugee children and to raise awareness of the growing refugee crisis around the world.

The first animated short film to be set to a Sting song, Footsteps on the Wind has won a variety of awards including the Oscar-qualifying Awards at Cinequest Film Festival and Flicker’s Rhode Island International Film Festival.

“To me, ‘Inshallah’ — which means ‘if God is willing, then it shall come to pass’ — sounded like a prayer that people in this situation may recite,” said Sting. “I imagined myself in that circumstance, wanting to bring my family to safety in a very dangerous situation.”

Filmmaker and multimedia artist Sanbar (Wajib, Freak Show, House in the Fields, The Idol, The Muslims Are Coming, The Time That Remains, Trouble The Water) has in her own family a history of refugee displacement, her father having fled Haifa, Palestine in 1948. Sanbar joined forces with co-directors Gustavo Leal and Faga Melo, the founders of the award-winning Brazilian film production company Dirty Work, to create Footsteps on the Wind, produced by her company Chasing the Light Studio. She also wrote the screenplay for the film with Pedro Paulo de Andrade.

Footsteps on the Wind was co-produced by Kristín Ólafsdóttir (Rebel Hearts, Against the Current, InnSæi), Gillian Gordon and Fernanda Zaffari. Olafsdottir’s feature films and documentaries have been nominated and awarded at many film festivals including Sundance and TIFF. Gordon has produced successful TV series for the BBC, and ITV, worked as a development executive at Film & General Productions, Make Waves Media and ITV. Zaffari is a journalist with over 20 experience who has secured coverage for The World Cups, Oscar Awards, Elections in Europe, the refugee crises and most recently, the COVID pandemic.

Screenwriter de Andrade’s films have accumulated more than 50 awards, including the Grand Prize of the Brazilian Film Academy in the Best Fiction Short Film Category. Recently, de Andrade wrote four episodes of the TV series Fathers, co-directed the short film Framed with Luiza Campos and wrote the manifesto for the Opening of the 27th Mix Brasil Film Festival. He is currently directing two feature films, The Remains and Open Rehearsal, in addition to writing the feature film screenplay Wide Awake.

The screenplay to Footsteps on the Wind was developed by Gordon and award-winning published authors Sita Brahmachari and Onjali Q. Rauf.

Footsteps on the Wind‘s upcoming festival screenings include the Oscar-qualifying Tirana International Film Festival (Sept. 24-30), Urbanworld Film Festival (Sept. 29-Oct. 3) and Encounters Short Film Festival (Sept. 1-30).

Notable trends in this year’s selection included:

    • Girls take the lead. Girls now take much stronger and active roles as main or secondary characters. Their personality and the way to describe them has evolved, such as Griott from Griott & Mungo, who has a “character carved in stone”. The same goes for Audrey in Audrey’s Shelter, Blanchet in The Monsters Valley, Fio Lina in Fio Lina and the Maestro and Nadia, among others.
    • Adult-targeted titles. Still going strong, the Young Adults & Adults target demographic is on the rise in animated TV shows, including Cannabiz, Voro, The Seniors, Freaked Out, Starting with Hope and Dick Has a Problem.
    • A new generation. The success of their presentations said it all for rising newcomers in the industry: Les Valseurs with Samuel (FR), Dreamin’ Dolphin Film with Hygge (DE/DK), MiniCosmos with Space Ham (DK/FR), Les Astronautes with What It Takes (FR) and Pigeon with Welcome to Mamoko (POL).

Baobab Studios announced that acclaimed actor John Cho (Searching, Star Trek), has officially joined the team as executive producer on their latest animated short film, Namoo. Written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Erick Oh (Opera) and produced by nine-time Emmy Award-winning Baobab Studios, Namoo is a narrative poem, hand-painted and animated with state-of-the-art software and real-time technology. Inspired by the passing of Oh’s grandfather. Namoo — which translates to “tree” in Korean—marks Oh’s most personal work to date. The film follows the beautiful and heartbreaking moments of a man’s life, from beginning to end.

“Though Erick’s film is based on his grandfather, it resonated for me in a very personal way. A valentine as well as a testament to the artistic process, this film is a little miracle in that it was animated during the pandemic by artists across the world, working together virtually. I was moved by its human message, improbably illustrated through an entirely hand-crafted, digital process,” said Cho.

The film is currently making its way through the festival circuit and will celebrate its L.A. Premiere as part of the official selection for the 2021 Hollyshorts Film Festival this Friday, September 24. The team will also present a Tech Talk at the upcoming Ottawa International Animation Festival entitled “Storytelling in 2D with 3D Tool Quill: A deep dive with Erick Oh” on Wednesday, September 29. Additional stops for the film in the coming month include the Edmonton International Film Festival, and the VIEW Conference (Turin, Italy).
