Animation Is Film Festival Announces 2021 Slate

Animation Is Film (AIF) announced today the competition line-up and other special events for its fourth edition, which takes place in-person October 22-24 and returns to its home at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood.

The festival kicks off Opening Night on Friday, October 22 with the North American premiere of the highly anticipated Netflix feature, The Summit Of The Gods, followed by an in-person Q&A with award-winning director Patrick Imbert (The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales). On Saturday, October 23, the Centerpiece film features the West Coast Premiere of GKIDS’ Belle, directed by Oscar nominee Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai) who will also do an in-person Q &A following the premiere. The West Coast Premiere of NEON’s award-winning Flee, directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, will close the festival Sunday, October 24.

“This year’s Animation Is Film lineup represents the very best feature animation from around the world, bringing to Hollywood world premieres as well as critically acclaimed, prize-winning titles from the Cannes, Annecy, Sundance, Telluride and Toronto festivals. After last year’s hiatus due to COVID, the Los Angeles animation and film communities are clamoring to gather together to see these films on the big screen, and we at AIF are enormously proud to present them,” said Matt Kaszanek, Director of AIF.

AIF partnered up with multiple industry organizations to present this year’s festival: ASIFA-Hollywood, Cartoon Network, Crunchyroll, DreamWorks, ELMA, Fathom Events, Funimation, Illumination, Laika, Netflix, Paramount Animation, Pixar, Shout! Factory, Sony Pictures Animation, Unifrance, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Warner Animation Group (WAG) and Warner Bros. Animation. The festival, founded by GKIDS and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, presents a selection of new animated feature films from Asia, Europe, South America and North America, with both juried and audience prizes.

Netflix announced today that it is joining forces with the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) to bring some of the world’s most beloved stories back to screens for current and future fans, in creative new ways.

This acquisition builds on the partnership begun three years ago to create a slate of animated TV series. For example, Academy Award winning filmmaker Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) and Academy Award nominee Phil Johnston (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph) are now hard at work on a series based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition, Netflix is working with Sony and Working Title on an adaptation of Matilda The Musical.

The streamer is now looking forward to an ambitious universe of animated and live-action film and TV programs, publishing, games, immersive, live theater, consumer products and more inspired by Dahl’s stories. The author’s works have been translated into 63 languages and sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, with characters like Matilda, The BFG, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Willy Wonka and The Twits delighting generations of children and adults.

“As we bring these timeless tales to more audiences in new formats, we’re committed to maintaining their unique spirit and their universal themes of surprise and kindness, while also sprinkling some fresh magic into the mix,” Netflix co-CEO and CCO Ted Sarandos and RDSC Managing Director Luke Kelly (Dahl’s grandson) wrote in a join blog post.

“There is a moment in James and the Giant Peach when the Ladybird says: ‘We are now about to visit the most marvellous places and see the most wonderful things!.’ The Centipede replies, ‘There is no knowing what we shall see!.’ Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company share a deep love of storytelling and a growing, global fan base. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to write multiple new chapters of these beloved stories, delighting children and adults around the world for generations to come.”

  • Seth MacFarlane & ‘Family Guy’ Team Unveil COVID-19 Vaccination Short

Seth MacFarlane & ‘Family Guy’ Team Unveil COVID-19 Vaccination Short

Seth MacFarlane and the producers of Family Guy have created an original three-minute comedic short designed to educate, entertain and encourage the millions of unvaccinated citizens around the globe to feel confident getting vaccinated against COVID-19. The short was a joint production of Fuzzy Door, 20th Television Animation, FOX Entertainment and the Ad Council’s “It’s Up To You” COVID-19 Vaccine Education Initiative.

Described as part Schoolhouse Rock, part educational film from high school science class, but told with all the irreverence and hilarity for which Family Guy is known, the three-minute short finds Peter Griffin at the doctor’s office debating getting the shot, when Stewie and Brian teleport inside his body and explain how vaccines work. The tour de force short has MacFarlane voicing four characters — Peter, Stewie, Brian and Dr. Hartman — and was penned by the show’s writers in collaboration with MacFarlane and a team of scientific experts and epidemiologists.

“We were proud to work with some of the nation’s leading immunologists and epidemiologists on this PSA. And while we never understood a single note they gave us, we took them all,” said Family Guy exec producers/showrunners Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin.

“With millions of Americans still unsure about getting vaccinated against COVID-19, it’s more important than ever that we have smart, informative and entertaining messages like this that will boost confidence in the vaccines,” said Lisa Sherman, president and CEO of the Ad Council. “This new work from Seth MacFarlane and the team at Family Guy is bringing critical vaccine information to audiences in a fresh and hilarious way that will surely inspire people to take the next step in slowing the pandemic. We are grateful to our partners at Disney and Fox for their passion and collaboration at this pivotal moment in time.”

Since its debut in 1999, Family Guy has reached cult status among fans and racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series (only the second animated series to be so recognized). Most recently, series creator and lead voice actor MacFarlane won the 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance and is currently tied for the most voice-over Emmy wins of all time (four) for his work on the show.

Set to have its upcoming season premiere with its 375th episode, Family Guy continues to provide a humorous take on current events with big name guest voices, including Mike Judge, Justin Hartley, Zachary Levi, Jay Pharoah, Chris Parnell, Patton Oswalt, Wendy Malick, Peter Macon, Elizabeth Gillies, Leslie Uggams, Kenny Loggins and Sam Elliott. Arif Zahir joins the voice cast this season as the Griffins’ neighbor and family friend Cleveland Brown.

Family Guy is a 20th Television Animation production. MacFarlane is creator and executive producer. Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin serve as executive producers and showrunners, while Steve Callaghan, Tom Devanney, Danny Smith, Kara Vallow, Mark Hentemann and Patrick Meighan are executive producers.

The season premiere of Family Guy airs Sunday, September 26 (9:30-10:00 p.m. EDT).

  • Trailer: Kavaleer Offers First Glimpse of Adam King Series at Cartoon Forum

Trailer: Kavaleer Offers First Glimpse of Adam King Series at Cartoon Forum

At the prestigious Cartoon Forum event in Toulouse, France today, Irish animation studio, Kavaleer Productions and David King, father of The Late Late Toy Show star Adam King, pitched to potential broadcasters and investors to support the production of a new animated series inspired by and starring Adam himself, debuting a first look at Adam ❤ Adventure!

Adam ❤ Adventure! is a preschool adventure-comedy series set in space, with an environmental slant. It breaks new ground for young audiences as it will be the first Irish children’s program to feature a wheelchair-user as protagonist. With 150 million children living with additional needs worldwide, the show will introduce much needed on screen representation.

“I am so excited to represent Adam and our family at Cartoon Forum. This is the culmination of many months of effort, vision and love from everyone involved. We have been totally blown away by the impact of Adam’s message on people around the world. We are thrilled to capture Adam’s spirit, his love of space and adventure in this wonderful cartoon,” David King shared during the pitch. “As parents, Fiona and I want our children to grow up as the heroes in their own stories. What they see around them inspires, and in Adam’s case — representation really matters. We are so grateful to Kavaleer for their trust in choosing Adam, a wheelchair user, to be the hero in this story. If he can see it, he can be it.”

Kavaleer CEO Andrew Kavanagh said, “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have been shown in bringing Adam ❤ Adventure! this far. In particular from the International Space Community who have been inspired by Adam’s story and ambition. The show has been warmly welcomed by the European Space Agency and we are thrilled to have enlisted Dr. Norah Patten of the International Space University as the show’s Chief Space Advisor. We are confident that Adam’s story will continue to impact everyone it reaches and we are honoured to be able to capture his essence in this very special production.”

L-R: Juelie McLoughlin, Gary Timpson, David King and Andrew Kavanagh at Cartoon Forum 2021 in Toulouse, France.

As part of the pitch, Kavaleer Productions also included a video clip from Dr. Norah Patten, Global Faculty Member of the International Space University, who said, “Adam has captured people’s hearts from all over the globe. Superstar Astronauts such as Chris Hadfield, Cady Coleman and Dan Tani have all reached out to Adam and supported his quest to become a CAPCOM so I think for all of these young kids watching Adam on screen as the lead character in this cartoon, they’ll see an adventurous, very inspiring young boy and somebody who represents ambition and dreams which will have a very positive impact for and of the kids watching.”

Inspired by Adam’s story, Prof. Mark McCaughrean, European Space Agency, Senior Advisor for Science & Exploration said, “To dream about space is perhaps not so much about actually going there as it is to put our planet and lives into perspective, and how we humans can come together to solve the challenges that face us and make it a better place for everyone.”

Adam ❤ Adventure!, inspired by and starring Adam himself, the show aims to promote his message of empathy and friendship (exemplified by his ‘Virtual Hug’) a truly universal phenomenon. The series features comedy-themed quests, in which our eponymous hero and his crew are on a mission to help aliens around the galaxy solve problems (usually of their own making) using his space-smarts and altruistic personality. The prime-directive for the audience is to learn about how best to protect the most important planet of all- our own- through humour and empathy for the world around us. Key to the show’s messaging will be that through empathy and understanding, we can all make the world a better place for future generations.

Cartoon Forum continues in Toulouse for the next two days, during which the team at Kavaleer Productions will work to secure suitable partners to bring the project to fruition.

Comedy Central & Stephen Colbert Team for Two Political Satire Toons

On the heels of MTV Entertainment Studios new deal with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it continues to double down on adult animation with the announcement today of two new projects slated to air on Comedy Central that build on CC’s long legacy of political satire: Fairview, a weekly, hyper-topical, half-hour, eight episode series and Washingtonia, an animated feature.

Fairview and Washingtonia, produced by CBS Studios, will be in partnership with the talented team of Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News (Paramount+), recently Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, and Our Cartoon President (Showtime).

“I am so excited to participate in this press release, but I should mention that my deal for Fairview and Washingtonia is not yet closed,” said Colbert. “The main sticking point is money. I want more and they don’t want me to have more. I look forward to airing these projects as soon as this issue is resolved.”

“As we continue to double down on adult animation, we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring Fairview and Washingtonia to Comedy Central in partnership with Stephen and our friends at CBS Studios,” said Nina Diaz, President of Content & CCO, MTVE and Chief Creative Officer Unscripted & Animation, Paramount+. “These two irreverent satires fit squarely into the Comedy Central brand – hilarious, sophisticated, and, of course, with politics at the center of it all.”

    • Fairview – a weekly, hyper-topical, half-hour adult animated series about how national politics causes wild small town drama in the Natty Light-chugging, grocery store parking lot-fighting, public urinating town of Fairview through the lens of its sloppy party girl turned pragmatic mayor Kelly Sampson. The show is created and executive produced by RJ Fried with Stephen Colbert, Chris Licht, Tim Luecke, Kim Gamble, Mike Leech and Zach Smilovitz as executive producers. Grant Gish is the Executive Producer with Co-Executive Producer Sachi Ezura and Supervising Producer Michael Stanger for MTV Entertainment Group.
    Washingtonia

    • Washingtonia – an animated feature about a rising political star and his deeply incompetent staff navigating the way deeper incompetence of Washington. Created and executive produced by RJ Fried with Stephen Colbert, Chris Licht, Mike Leech, Tim Luecke and Zach Smilovitz as executive producers. Grant Gish is the Executive Producer with Co-Executive Producer Sachi Ezura and Supervising Producer Michael Stanger for MTV Entertainment Group.

These mark the second and third projects for Comedy Central with Colbert, following the recently announced live-action series Tha God’s Honest Truth with Charlamagne Tha God, a weekly half hour late-night show which features Charlamagne bringing his influential, opinionated, thought-provoking perspective to late night. (September 17, 10 p.m. ET/PT.)

Upcoming animation from MTV Entertainment also includes the highly anticipated Untitled Beavis & Butt-head Movie from Emmy Award-winning Mike Judge, who reimagines MTV’s seminal, Gen X-defining Beavis and Butt-Head for another movie adventure to be released on Paramount+ as a kick-off the new series on Comedy Central.

Fairview and Washingtonia add to the CBS Studios growing slate of animated series including The Harper House, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy and Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News.

Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, today announced the renewal of the original series Rugrats for a second season (13 episodes) in the U.S., Latin America, Australia and Canada, with more adventures from the colorful imaginations of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil and Lil. The all-new take on the Nicktoons favorite premiered on Paramount+ in May and the next eight episodes of Season 1 will be available to stream exclusively on the service beginning Thursday, October 7.

“Kids series are a key driver of engagement for Paramount+,” said Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer, Paramount+. “With the renewal of Rugrats for a second season, we look forward to bringing even more adventures with Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica and the rest of the Rugrats for kids and families to enjoy.”

“This next season of Rugrats will dive even deeper into the secret life of babies and their unsuspecting parents, while continuing to highlight the main themes of friendship and family,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “For 30 years, the Rugrats have resonated with fans around the globe and we can’t wait to continue telling original and fresh stories with these beloved characters.”

From Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the brand-new Rugrats series is a reimagining of the classic ’90s hit that features rich and colorful CG-animation and follows the babies — Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil and Lil — as they explore the world and beyond from their pint-sized and wildly imaginative point-of-view. Following the season one run on Paramount+, the series will air on Nickelodeon at a later date to be announced.

In the all-new Season 1 episodes, the babies will continue to find themselves in a variety of situations by using their wild imaginations, including defeating an “outer space villain,” traveling through Chuckie’s dad’s body, embarking upon a daring mission to break Angelica out of preschool and more. The new batch of episodes also includes a half-hour, Halloween-themed special where Tommy needs his friends’ help to save Angelica after she turns into a werewolf at a scary Halloween party as their parents seem to disappear one by one.

The series stars EG Daily (Tommy Pickles), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie Finster), Cheryl Chase (Angelica Pickles), Cree Summer (Susie Carmichael) and Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil DeVille), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series. The original adventurous babies’ voice cast is joined by new voices, including Ashley Rae Spillers and Tommy Dewey (Tommy’s parents, Didi and Stu Pickles); Tony Hale (Chuckie’s father, Chas Finster); Natalie Morales (Phil and Lil’s mother, Betty DeVille); Anna Chlumsky and Timothy Simons (Angelica’s parents, Charlotte and Drew Pickles); Nicole Byer and Omar Miller (Susie’s parents, Lucy and Randy Carmichael); and Michael McKean (Grandpa Lou Pickles).

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the all-new Rugrats is based on the series created by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain. Kate Boutilier (Rugrats) and Casey Leonard (Breadwinners) are executive producers and Dave Pressler (Robot and Monster) and Rachel Lipman (Rugrats) serve as co-executive producers, with Kellie Smith (The Fairly OddParents) as line producer on Season 2. Charlie Adler (Rugrats) serves as the voice director. Production is overseen by Mollie Freilich, Senior Manager, Current Series Animation, Nickelodeon.

Today’s Rugrats renewal news comes as the iconic series celebrates 30 years since the original launch. The original Rugrats series launched August 11, 1991 and instantly became a groundbreaking phenomenon, spawning consumer products and three hit theatrical releases, cementing its place in pop culture history through its iconic characters, storytelling and unique visual style. Rugrats was in production for nine seasons over the course of 13 years. The series earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids’ Choice Awards, and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Trailer: ‘A Spark Story’ Documentary Follows the Next Generation of Pixar Filmmakers

Disney+ and Pixar Animation Studios shared a trailer today for the upcoming feature-length documentary A Spark Story — a co-production of Pixar and Supper Club that takes an intimate look at Pixar’s SparkShorts filmmaking process as two directors strive to get their uniquely personal visions on screen. Directed by Jason Sterman and Leanne Dare of Supper Club (Chef’s Table) and produced by Sterman, Brian McGinn and David Gelb in collaboration with Pixar, A Spark Story launches on Disney+ on September 24.

“I think viewers will be most surprised by how much personal storytelling is involved in the Pixar filmmaking process,” said Sterman. “It takes so many people to bring one of these films to life, and you can feel the filmmakers’ personal touches in every aspect of the films. Hopefully A Spark Story will give audiences a greater sense of the people and personalities who bring these types of films to life.”

“Like Louis and Aphton, this was our first time directing, so we could relate to a lot of the experiences they were going through,” said Dare. “We found ourselves in the same situations trying to find our story, figuring out how to lead our team and getting comfortable trusting our instincts — taking leaps of faith and knowing we’ll figure out how to land. This helped us connect to their stories and appreciate their unique approaches to storytelling.”

‘Sunnyside Billy’ Sizzles as Clan joins Toonz’s Imira as Co-Producer

Spain’s leading teen and children’s broadcaster Clan has joined Imira Entertainment, the Spanish subsidiary of Toonz Media Group, as co-producers of the highly anticipated 2D kids’ animation series Sunnyside Billy. The flagship original production of Toonz was conceptualized by a team led by the legendary animation master Olivier Jean-Marie, who passed away in May.

Yago Fandiño, Head of Content for Children for TVE, described the show as “A funny, original series that brings together the legacy of Olivier’s irreverent and zany humor with a new generation of Spanish creators.”

Targeted at viewers seven and up, Sunnyside Billy is an upbeat, action-packed comedy about a friendly fried egg named Billy, who is oddly positive about every situation. The pre-adolescent Billy and his band of friends are on a mission to protect their friend, the mythical Big Fish, from the prying eyes of the greedy Tooth. The series is all about friendship, spreading positivity and facing problems without losing heart. The show, which will feature an original musical score, also has protection of environment and ecology as a recurring theme.

The international, award-winning production team of the series includes celebrated Belgian creator Jan Van Rijsselberge, who was part of the original creative team that conceptualized the show along with Jean-Marie. Rijsselberge’s credits include shows such as Robot Boy and Dude, That’s My Ghost! Toonz CEO P. Jayakumar and Imira CEO Carlos Biern serve as executive producers of the show.

Sunnyside Billy is a truly international show with a very strong pedigree, coming from the creators of superhits like Oggy and the Cockroaches and Zig and Sharko. It is one of the last projects that Olivier Jean-Marie worked on,” noted Jayakumar. “Together with Clan, we are committed to produce this series in the highest standards and elevate it to the ranks of the greatest ever kids animation shows made.”

“We are very excited to partner again with TVE creating together international shows incorporating top animation teams from Spain, where female artists are equally represented, with great award-winning creators on board. We see no better channel to partner for this show but Clan in Spain,” said Biern.

Previous co-productions between Clan and Toonz in Spain include successful shows like Sandra, the Fairy Tale Detective and Bat Pat. The 52 x 11′ Sunnyside Billy is being developed and produced at Imira’s production facilities in Spain. Post-production works will be done at Toonz’s Irish subsidiary studio Telegael. Sunnyside Billy is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2023.

  • Teaser: ‘Marvel’s Hit Monkey’ Suits Up for Hulu Debut

Teaser: ‘Marvel’s Hit Monkey’ Suits Up for Hulu Debut

No more monkeying around… the new adult animated Hulu Original series Marvel’s Hit Monkey is locked, loaded and ready for action. The streamer today dropped an official teaser for the new toon from co-creators/exec producer Josh Gordon & Will Speck (Blades of Glory) and exec producer Joe Quesada (EVP & Creative Director, Marvel Entertainment), which is set to premiere November 17.

Synopsis: After a Japanese snow monkey’s tribe is slaughtered, he joins forces with the ghost of an American assassin and together, they begin killing their way through the Yakuza underworld.

    Meet the Characters:

    • Shinji (voiced by George Takei): A lifelong public servant who has been the man behind the political career of Ken Takahara, his friend and political mentor. But when tragedy strikes, it falls to Shinji to pick up the baton and carry their political dreams forward. A good and honest man who raised his niece Akiko all by himself after the death of her parents. Shinji is the kind of politician everyone wishes they could have.
    • Bryce (voiced by Jason Sudeikis): A world-weary Assassin who’s made some unbelievably poor life choices. He drowns his sorrows in work, travel and gambling but when it comes to doing hits, there’s no one better. After he’s killed in the Japanese Alps, the ghost of Bryce and Monkey are tied together on a revenge quest. A terrible mentor with a sarcastic, cynical view of the world, Bryce must ultimately dig deep within himself in order to complete his final mission and help Monkey become who he was meant to be.
    • Akiko (voiced by Olivia Munn): Smart, ambitious and powerful, Akiko is the niece of Shinji Yokohama, the future Prime Minister of Japan. Having spent time in the west for college and law school, she has returned with strong opinions about the future of her Uncle’s campaign. Her inherently good nature however masks a darker side, one that will emerge as the season progresses.
    • Haruka (voiced by Ally Maki): An honest cop from a small town in the north, Haruka comes to Tokyo with dreams of reforming a corrupt city. But can she hold on to her values in the face of so much vice? Her new partner Ito will test her sense of right and wrong and ultimately prove to be the mentor she has always looked for. But when it falls to her to complete their case, will she have what it takes to become the cop she has always felt she could be?
    • Ito (voiced by Nobi Nakanishi): The laughing stock of the Tokyo Police Department, and struggling with a drinking problem, Ito is the only one in Tokyo who suspects that Hit Monkey may actually be one of the good guys. But no one, not even his new partner Haruka believes him. He will have to dig deep into his past, and face his demons in order to finally restore his honor.
    • Monkey (voiced by Fred Tatasciore): Monkey’s peaceful existence in the Japanese alps is shattered by the tragic loss of his tribe — setting him on a course of revenge and violence in the very world of humans that are responsible for his plight. He’s a killer of killers with a bit of a rage problem. Throughout the series, he must learn to navigate the struggle between his inherently sweet nature and the evil acts he must commit. It’s through his complicated friendship with the Ghost of Bryce (a former assassin and now, Monkey’s unwanted conscience), that will determine whether Monkey will be consumed by his rage or channel it for good. This is the story of Hit Monkey.
