  • Luma Illuminates The Covenant

Luma Pictures, the effects studio behind such recent big-screen vfx extravaganzas as Sony’s Underworld: Evolution and The Cave, has unleashed some digital witchcraft on director Renny Harlin’s The Covenant, which opens in theaters across North America today. The shop contributed CG characters and environments and various particle effects to the supernatural thriller from ScreenGems and Lakeshore Ent.

The Covenant revolves around four teenage students from a private New England academy who are endowed with supernatural powers via a pact that dates back to the 16th century. The kids use their powers mostly for tomfoolery until a new student shows up with a few superhuman talents of his own.

‘I am most proud of the dynamic supernatural effects that we created for this film,’ says Luma Pictures senior vfx supervisor Payam Shohadai (Into the Blue, The Cave, Underworld: Evolution). ‘Once again, our staff stepped up to a big challenge’designing and executing high concept effects from scratch. Many will leave audiences wondering, ‘How did they do that?”

Luma’s contribution is prominently featured in The Covenant‘s opening sequence, in which the boys reveal their powers by jumping off a 400-foot cliff. The shots are comprised of mostly CG environments. For the most spectacular leap, Luma’s role was to bridge two live action elements’the beginning of the actor’s leap and his landing on the ground’with a lengthy tumbling shot involving a CG double. 3D fog and other environmental effects were added to the shot to match the mood and depth of the practical scenes.

‘In addition to the CG double of the actor, this sequence required us to create a digital set for the top of the cliff as well as a CG environment encompassing the entire face of the cliff, the sky, ocean, beachfront and opposing cliff with a lighthouse,’ explains texture and model supervisor Chris Sage.

Luma also worked hard on the the film’s ‘Ascension’ sequence, in which the hero receives magical powers from the heavens. The transfer of powers is represented by what appear to be waves of energy particles that swirl through the scene and, at times, represent a kind of life form of their own. The scene is comprised of around 30 shots and involved a complex assortment of particle effects, fluid simulations and animation techniques to pull off the sequence.

‘Dynamic simulations are difficult to control and producing them is a time-consuming, iterative process,’ noted Luma VFX supervisor Vince Cirelli. ‘The 30 shots in the Ascension sequence had to cut together seamlessly and with complete continuity. In order to accomplish that, we needed to be able to precisely control each of the particle and simulation events. We developed a technique that allowed us to trigger simulations based on key framed animation. As a result, we were able to create aesthetically-sculpted simulations on a shot by shot basis that preserved the pacing and energy essential to the story’s arc.’

CG doubles and environments were also utilized in the film’s climatic scene, a showdown between the hero and his nemesis. The sequence also required Luma to design the look of a ‘super powerball,’ which isn’t exactly a lottery win for the loser of the epic battle. • PlayStation 3 Further Delayed

Though gamers in North America will get their PlayStation 3 consoles in time for the holidays, the European market will have to wait until next year to try out the next-gen video game machine. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced that it has pushed back the European release to March of 2007. The company assured gamers and investors that the delay would not affect the North American rollout, which is still on track for Nov. 17.

Sony blames the revised release schedule on a delay in Sony Group’s mass production of the blue laser diode, which is key to the PlayStaton 3’s Blu-ray DVD feature. Despite the snag, the company says it still plans to ship 6 million PS3 units worldwide within the fiscal year ending 2007.

The PS3 unit will be available in “clear black” and will come equipped with Giga-bit Ethernet, a pre-Installed hard drive disc and the combination of Cell and RSX(TM) processors. In addition to playing next-gen titles, the machine will be compatible with a vast catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. The units will retail for the U.S. price of $499 (20GB) and $599 (60GB).

  • No Dancing Penguins in 3D?

According to ComingSoon.net, Warner Bros. has abandoned plans to release an IMAX 3D version of the upcoming CG-animated feature Happy Feet. The movie about penguins who sing and dance to attract mates will instead get a standard 2D IMAX rollout Nov. 17, the same day it hits theaters nationwide.

Directed by George Miller, whose credits include the Babe and Mad Max films, Happy Feet is a animated musical comedy starring Elijah Wood as the voice of Mumble, a penguin who uses fancy dance moves to make up for the fact that he is the worst singer in a culture that relies on good pipes. Hugh Jackman (Flushed Away) will voice Mumble’s father, Memphis, and Nicole Kidman will play his mother, Norma Jean. The voice cast also includes Robin Williams (Robots) and Brittany Murphy (King of the Hill) and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix trilogy).

Happy Feet was to be digitally converted into IMAX 3D via the proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology, a process that reportedly can cost up to $10 million. Warner says that a 3D print couldn’t be struck in time for a simultaneous release, but the studio does plan to release a 3D version in the near future.

As with most animated features these days, Happy Feet has a doppelganger looming on the horizon. Sony Pictures Animation is currently animating Surf’s Up, a penguin comedy that revolves around a big surfing competition. Featuring the voices of Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel and James Woods, that film is slated for release in the summer of 2007.

Also in the pipeline is Bob Saget’s animated spoof, Farce of the Penguins, which is a twisted take on last year’s hit documentary, March of the Penguins. The Thinkfilm 2007 release features the voices of Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Alexander, Dane Cook, Whoopi Goldberg, John Stamos, Saget and several other comics.

  • AGEIA Bring Physics to Granny 3D

AGEIA Technologies, which provides hardware-accelerated physics solutions for games, has teamed with RAD Game Tools to integrate AGEIA PhysX technology into RAD’s Granny 3D animation system. The announcement was made at the 2006 Austin Game Conference, which is currently under way in Austin, Texas.

Granny 3D is a game developer toolkit used to build a wide range of interactive 3D worlds, objects and characters. Since launching in 1999, the product has been licensed for more than 600 games around the world, a number RAD hopes will soar now that real-time physics will be possible through the AGEIA PhysX API.

“Our new AGEIA PhysX API is a huge benefit to all our customers,” says Mitch Soule of RAD Game Tools. “Applying real-time physical properties to character animations so that they act and react naturally in complex environments is now a simple task which will dramatically speed up the overall game development process and produce more realistic game experiences.”

“By integrating Granny 3D with AGEIA PhysX technology, game developers now can seamlessly create characters that move, react and interact naturally,” adds Greg Stoner, VP of business development for AGEIA. “We’re looking forward to continuing to work with RAD Game Tools to extend their rich product set with our powerful physics capabilities. Together, we will be able to help game developers take their games to the next level of compelling gameplay.”

Run-time physics replaces the predictable, canned animations that developers have traditionally built into games. A leader in the field is NaturalMotion, which has licensed its game solution, euphoria, to a number of development studios including LucasArts, which will use it for its upcoming Indiana Jones title.

  • Pirates Booty Hits $1 Billion

A decade ago, when MGM’s expensive Cutthroat Island was sinking fast in theaters, few would have thought that a pirate movie could gross $1 billion at the box office. With some help from the irrepressible Captain Jack Sparrow and some Oscar-worthy digital animation by ILM, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is set to do just that. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel topped the foreign box office for the ninth consecutive week, bringing its worldwide gross to around $993 million. Over the next few days, the pic will become the third movie in history to cross the billion mark.

Domestically, Dead Man’s Chest has earned approximately $579.5 million, making it by far the year’s biggest hit. Still, the swashbuckler has a long way to go to catch 20th Century Fox’s Titanic, which pulled in $1.8 billion worldwide. The only other movie to rake in a billion dollars is New Line Cinema’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the third installment in director Peter Jackson’s fantasy trilogy.

Screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio (Shrek, National Treasure) recently confirmed the title of the third Pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, which is scheduled to sail into theaters next year.
